| Some raw transparency on a realistic growth not some tech bro with massive growth. I got into schooling right before turning 19. Some detailed context on the journey below. Read if interested ignore if not. I was raised by a single father, Vietnam war Vet. 100% service connected disabled. He passed in 2011 the Father’s Day after I graduated high school. Me and my mom repaired our relationship after she did the work and got better & beat her addictions ( bipolar, schizophrenic, use to be on drugs and alcoholic) moved with her. Knew I always wanted to go into aviation. I started school in 2019 at a local community college close to my moms apartment in January 2012. I worked part time while going to school to support myself and help my mom / mentally disabled little brother. I also got VA assistance for school. It was about half the BAH ( 900 a month ) so that’s non taxable accountable income. I finished school December 2013. Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Technician April 2014. First Job I got came September 2014 in Everett WA . Hard as hell to find a job at first and moved all around to get it. Moved back to California to work a per diem contract in November 2014. Something told me from my experience with my dad why work far from my family if my parents are getting older and can get sick. Took a full time job non per diem end of 2015. Less than a year later my mom got stage 4 lung cancer mid 2016. Couldn’t balance work, school for my accelerated BA and taking care of a dying mom. I had my own place, paid her bills at her apartment and mine from my savings. I did have a roommate that helped make that possible with reduced hours and FMLA protecting my job. Mom died January 2018. Airline job came in and started June 2018 and been there since. I did get injured and paid through workers comp end of 2018 into 2019 so there’s a gap in pay. 2020 I worked 9 months took off 3 with those 3 months being at 33% pay to not work. Steady union pay increases. Next year I will be finishing the pay scale. How the airlines structure the pay is majority of pay is held until completion year, which takes 5-7 years to complete structured in steps (For me step 7 to 8 is 26k yearly increase coming June 2025). I wish I could post the pay scale in a second pic for proof. I’ll make 139,588 base. With average 7.35% of our annual salary in a bonus paid out every February. 5.5% 401k match at 11% salary. 5 weeks of vacation a year ( With time increases to 9 weeks after 24 years of service). If I want to make more with OT at my station I can but I choose not to do much. Maybe 40-80 hours a year in total but on average guys done with the pay scale make about 180k casually. The ones here who work OT often probably do about 250k. Any questions feel free to ask! Thanks for reading my word vomit . Sorry if it’s hard to read I tried to make it easy to follow. submitted by Ok_Veterinarian_2765 to Salary [link] [comments] |
2024.05.12 01:23 Plane-Ice-1828 Everything I did to glow up in 2 years - part 2 (Mindset change: Loving myself unconditionally while striving to be the best version of myself)
I wanted to quickly thank everyone for so much love and support on the last post and I hope my tips helped. That last post was getting really long so I decided to keep it related to health, wellness, and aesthetics. This post will be purely about how I changed my mindset.
As the title says this glow up journey required that I loved myself unconditionally while striving to be the best version of myself. This was something that did not come naturally to me at first. Before I continue I'd like to share all of the books that helped me in order to make this shift:
- The 12 week year by Brian P. Moran

- The Wisdom of Insecurity by Alan Watts
- The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson
- McMindfulness: How Mindfulness Became the New Capitalist Spirituality
If I were to summarize my entire glow up, my journey encompassed two goals:
- Self-love: Accept what will not change
- Self-growth: Change what I will not accept
I cannot change my race, my height, my age, the people I work with, the grief I felt from losing a loved one. I can change my environment, my behaviors, my reactions, the way I look after myself and the people I keep around me in my personal life.
Years ago I was a chronic people pleaser, this did not help my dating life, my career, my relationship with myself, and especially my health. Learning to prioritize my beauty felt foreign, egoic, against everything I learnt religious wise and for all intents and purposes (in my mind) placed the power in society's hands. I had to wake up, follow a routine, workout, prep my meals, I had to do all of these things to be accepted and valued...or did I?
Is looking after your health, your looks, your life really all that bad? Was a question I grappled with. I started reading all these productivity books and they seemed so centered on being a Girl Boss, work hard, but be feminine, be the best, be on top, in looks, in career, and on, and on, and on.
For the longest time this was the narrative. Looking out for others, being there for them, that's selfless, that's fun, that's easy, but looking out for myself was supposed to be this rigid list and I'm supposed to have a timer to track my every movement for time efficiency.
Then my loved one passed. The loved one that took trips on a whim, the one that had every lipgloss shade from her favorite makeup line. The one who went for daily walks to see the sunset, she changed her hair a bah-gillion times just for the heck of it. The one who had this zest for life and was excited to approach everything like it was an opportunity to grow, an opportunity to learn, an opportunity to have fun. Maybe, I could do this because I'm the most important project I'll ever work on. Maybe it's not that I had to wake up, had to follow a routine, had to workout, had to prep my meals, had to do all of these things to be accepted and valued. Maybe, I get to wake up everyday and hear the birds in the neighbors tree, maybe I get to spend some time each day looking after myself and loving myself, maybe I get to make my life easier by preparing food so I don't have to think about that in the evenings, maybe I do all of these things because I do value myself and love myself. This was my aha moment. I'm not doing this because I have to, I do this because I get to.
For me, everything became about appreciating another day and appreciating my journey. Here are the mindset shifts I made in each area of life that allowed me to do so:
Beauty
Mindset We all know about pretty privilege and thin privilege, it goes even deeper when you think of how this merges off into class privilege and race privilege, so on and so forth. What does it mean to be beautiful? Why do we want to be beautiful?
We all know the answer to this but what if there is another answer? Neuroaesthetics.
🧠 What is Neuroaesthetics?
Neuroaesthetics is a scientific discipline that studies the impact of art, music, and beauty on the human brain. It was first coined by Semir Zeki, a neurobiologist at University College London in 2002.
🎨 Art and Your Brain
Studies have shown that viewing art can increase dopamine-related activity in the brain’s frontal cortex, the same area associated with romantic love. This can lead to feelings of pleasure and satisfaction
🎶 Music and Your Mind
Research from Stanford University has revealed that listening to music can affect the brain’s areas linked to mood regulation, attention, and self-awareness.
🪞Beauty and the Brain A 2011 study by Professor Zeki showed that viewing what one perceives as beautiful can activate the medial orbitofrontal cortex, the part of the brain associated with rewarding experiences. Information from Dr. Tara Swart
Basically, if we are feeling safe (rest and digest state), we would not be engaging in mundane activites such as these. Meaning there would be no reason for the body to feel unsafe (fight, flight, or fawn state).
Are you telling me that by beautifying myself - (treating my makeup and styling myself like an art form), and listening to music while doing so, I'm looking after my health? I'm looking after my nervous system and therefore my gut health, my insulin resistance, my inflammation and my PCOS all by engaging in a little self-care? Tell me more! This was the conversation I had in my head LOL I literally found the purpose to all of this that extended beyond any outside, societal, patriarichal, cultural, reason. I'm looking after myself. Inside and out.
How to Enhance Your Life with Neuroaesthetics
✅ Explore Your Artistic Preferences: Find out what kind of art stirs emotions in you. It could be a classical painting, a contemporary sculpture, a piece of jazz, or a pop song. The goal is to identify what forms of beauty activate your brain’s reward center.
✅ Create a Beauty-Rich Environment: Surround yourself with the art and beauty that you love (flowers, candles, clean environment, etc.)
✅ Engage in Artistic Activities: Participate in activities that stimulate your artistic side, such as painting, playing an instrument, doing your makeup, dressing up or attending exhibitions and concerts. ✅ Mindful Appreciation: Instead of passively consuming art or music, try to engage more deeply. Observe the artwork’s details, listen attentively to the music, notice how they make you feel. This mindful appreciation can make the neuroaesthetic experience even more profound.
✅ Spend time in nature - our tastes in art and music may vary but nature is the palette that we all appreciate because we’ve been in it for millennia 💚
Change vs Acceptance In saying all of this, take out a piece of paper write down what are your natural born features that you accept or have to learn to accept. On another list include things you'd like to change. Be mindful about this and consider whether you'll be taking away from your charm and charisma, or are you going to enhance yourself. Eg. My nose, I can change it but it adds charm and character to my face. It's distinctive and a clear connection to my ethnic background, it's something I choose to accept. Whereas, my teeth were crooked years ago, I had sooo many gaps. I decided to make a change and get braces to change this.
Health
Mindset This was a little easier to wrap my head around. Health is wealth, I want to feel good, as much, if not more than I look good. Which creates a positive feedback loop because the better I feel is the better I look. More than this though, it's prioritizing well-being over productivity, it's supporting local and sustainable practices, it's advocating for healthcare equity, it's promoting community and social support, and lastly it's valuing time and leisure. Making time for rest, relaxation, and leisure activities fights against the social norms, and racial and gender biases that I should be sacrificing my health for the good of society and my family. Wooh that was a mouthful but I'll give an example, the fact that even while sick my grandmother was expected to serve and cater to her husband. Prioritizing my health is an act of rebellion, it's good trouble if you will ;)
Change vs Acceptance I cannot get rid of my PCOS this is something I accept. However, I can change my diet and lifestyle to manage my symptoms.
Etiquette
Mindset The dreaded feminine vs masculine energy conversation. Don't even get me started on all the rules for what lip liner is classy versus trashy (heavy side eye at all the etiquette/femininity coaches that lack cultural nuance). However, was there a way I could reset my mindset around this entire practice. Etiquette at it's core can be about classism and racism, but perhaps in my own life it can be about consideration. Eating with your mouth closed in consideration of the other person. Not wearing perfume that's too loud which may trigger the people around me. Respect for workers and service providers. It can be about social harmony versus individualism. Furthermore, by embodying my womanhood I am embracing my hormones, in the way I work, the way I eat, the way I show up in the world.
Change vs Acceptance I cannot change my monthly cycle. I accept this. However, I can practice good etiquette by planning my social and work outings based on cycle (energy levels). I can't change my PMDD, I accept this. However, it's also good etiquette for me to hand the reigns over when it comes to my caregiving responsibilities, when I am not emotionally capable of performing them.
Personal Development
Mindset Skill development and autonomy, or as my grandma says it, if you don't use it you lose it. Working on yourself daily is one of the best ways to keep up with your health, happiness, and self sufficiency.
Change vs Acceptance I accept that I'm never going to know how to hike, I hate being outdoors like that and I love this about myself. :p lol but I can change a few of my cardio activities to include a walk outside, so I can get in touch with nature in a way that feels comfortable for me.
Dating
Mindset Someone in the last post asked for my vetting system when it comes to men and because I want to follow the rules (but also because I want to keep this post about self), here is the gist of how to have the right mindset. Be hard to get and easy to be with - with every new person you meet (potential friends, men, everyone). The barriers to entry should be high, you're busy, you can't answer that last minute invite to hangout or to a date, you're working on a new crochet project. Really important stuff, you're watching the new season of Bridgerton. Sorrrrry, can't miss. That's it. Thats the secret. After doing all of this work, you should rightfully be, a selfish gatekeeper - selfish with time, energy, focus, emotions. Ask yourself what is my entry fee? And charge an extremely high price.
Change vs Acceptance I accept that the potential friends in my area are partiers. I can change my environment by exploring more bookshops and see if I stumble upon a new bestie.
Spirituality
Mindset Since I touched on some of my societal beliefs I want to tread very lightly here so I respect the rules and everyones beliefs, but essentially compassion, empathy, mindfulness that stands outside the norm (eg. self-care by doing my makeup), inclusivity and diversity, all of these aligned with my values-based living.
Change vs Acceptance I accept that most spiritual practices are patriarichal. I'm going to change my own internal biases and prejudices, by learning more about feminist spirituality.
In closing, approach your looksmaxxing journey as mindfully as possible. As an act of self-love and self-growth. An act of change and acceptance. In this way you will foster holisitic well-being and mental health. It also challenges the idea we are living for the endless race to meet this ethereal beauty ideal, but rather we are looking after ourselves. Embrace and have fun in your journey. Fall in self 🤍
Really nervous to post this and not sure if it fits in this page but I hope it resonates.

- LaMelo Ball (1x All Star)
2021 (0/5)
2022:
- Paolo Banchero (1x All Star)
2023 (0/5)
Adding these numbers up, it appears that 137 out of the 290 top 5 picks since 1966 have received at least one All Star or All NBA nomination, which translates to a little over 47%. Keeping in mind that 2021, 2022, and 2023 will likely produce all stars over the next few years, this is almost half. I think that is rather impressive actually!
The only "perfect" drafts were 1966 and 1970, which might not be surprising as the talent and quality difference was probably was more noticeable then than it is now, making the top picks an easier choice.
More surprising is that only a few years after that, in 1976, none of the top five picks were ever an All Star or All NBA player. Even more surprising is that that draft contained four future Hall of Famers (Adrian Dantley, Alex English, Dennis Johnson, and Robert Parish). All of these players were picked outside the top 5. Some really bad drafting there.
A different surprising trend was the bad drafting from the top picks in 2009-2014, where only one or two of the top five picks ended up becoming All Stars or All NBA players. Notable players who were drafted outside the top 5 those years include Stephen Curry (7th), Demar DeRozan (9th), Paul George (10th), Kawhi Leonard (15th), Jimmy Butler (30th), Klay Thompson (11th), Damian Lillard (6th), Giannis Antetokounmpo (15th), Rudy Gobert (27th) and last but certainly not least Nikola Jokic (41st). Missed opportunities.
There are more interesting things in here, but I have spent too much time on this already. Hope you guys find it interesting!

2024.01.07 16:41 Local-Laugh6699 My New Year’s resolution, One Musical a Day: Week One
| For my New Year’s Resolution, I aim to listen to one musical soundtrack a day and then putting it into a table. I’m studying drama and thought that, aside from being enjoyable, may be helpful in the future. The rules: 1. I can not pick a musical I’ve already seen or listened to, only new ones 2. it can be professional or amateur, as long as they have a cast recording it counts 3. it can be any length, so I will have a mixture of long and short ones. 2023.10.17 00:56 xereous93 [OC] There have been 4 All-NBA 1st team recipients who missed the playoffs in the 35 years since the All-NBA 3rd team was added in 1988-89. Anthony Davis in 2017, *Steph Curry in 2021*, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic in 2023
After reading some debate regarding Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's ranking amongst the media without making the playoffs I decided to do a bit of digging into the historical precedence of last year's All-NBA selections.
The table below records every Playoff-less All-NBA selection (PLAN), going back to the addition of All-NBA 3rd team in 1989. There are a few oddities due to rule changes/trades which I've tried to account for below.
Scroll to the bottom of the table for my takeaways.

PLAN recipients / Playoff recipients | 4 / 171 | 18 / 157 | 22 / 153 |
1st time All-NBA PLAN recipients | 1 | 5 | 8 |
0 denotes player on a "Play-In" team which disrupts historical consistency: Steph Curry was on an 8 seed that missed the playoffs due to the Play-In rule change, Dame and Trae were on 9 seeds that won the Play-In and made the playoffs.
= denotes 1st time as an All NBA recipient
+ denotes player traded mid season between a playoff team and a non-playoff team
All-NBA teams Historical team standings Takeaways: - The vast majority (91.6%) of All-NBA recipients in the past 35 years have been on playoff teams. 97.7% of 1st team, 89.7% of 2nd team, and 87.4% of 3rd team.
- Those numbers get a bit fuzzy when integrating the play-in tournament. Counting Steph's 8th seed finish as "making the playoffs the numbers change to: total: 91.8%, 1st: 98.2%, 2nd: 89.7%, 3rd: 87.4%. Counting Dame and Trae's 9th seed Play-in victories as playoff berths: total: 92%, 1st: 97.7%, 2nd: 90.3%, 3rd: 88%
- More than two thirds (68.2%) of the total Playoff-less All-NBA (PLAN) players had received All-NBA accolades prior to their PLAN selection. Counting Trae's 9th seed finish as a playoff berth that number goes up 69.8%.
- Mitch Richmond, Kevin Love, and Demarcus Cousins received PLAN selections following a different PLAN season.
- I hesitate to say that All-NBA selections in 2023 were totally without precedent, however it is pretty unusual compared to the past 35 years. Individual accolades tend to follow team success.
- Depending on if you count Steph's season as a PLAN season either half or two thirds of all 1st team PLAN selections of the past 35 years occurred last year. Another way to put it: before last year 169/170 (99.4%) of All-NBA first teamers were on teams that finished 8th seed or higher in their conference.
- It matched the highest number of PLAN selections with 3 (tying 2005 and 1998). The average year has 1 PLAN selection.
- Of the 4 PLAN 1st teamers Luka Doncic was on the lowest seeded team: Anthony Davis (2017) was on a 10th seeded team, Steph (2021) on an 8th seeded team, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was on a 10th seeded team, and Luka Doncic was on an 11th seeded team. HOWEVER: Anthony Davis' team had the worst record at 34-48 while the Luka Doncic Mavericks were 38-44. Steph was the only 1st team PLAN selection with an above .500 record (39-33)
- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's 1st All-NBA selection was a PLAN selection while most PLAN selections are prior recipients of All-NBA accolades.
- Mitch Richmond is possibly the GOAT recipient of individual accolades without team success. He is a hall of famer with 6 All-star seasons, 3 All-NBA 2nd teams and 2 All-NBA 3rd teams. His team only made the playoffs once when he was either an All-star or All-NBA (he was both in 1996). He won a ring in his final year with the 2002 Lakers playing a very meaningful 4 minutes in the post season.

2023.10.07 05:54 DetroitOtaku The Phoenix Suns: A Legacy of Failure
| John Paxson will haunt the Suns forever. Ah, the Phoenix Suns. The oldest legacy of failure the NBA has to offer, and the second oldest legacy of failure in American sports behind only the Texas Rangers. They have been in the NBA since 1968 and they have no championships to their name. The Suns are a shining example of why Phoenix is one of the most tortured sports cities in America. Let's take a look at how much torture this team has gone through for almost 60 years: 1968 NBA Draft - With your inaugural pick in the NBA Draft you select this Dick Cunningham guy from Murray State, who scored 981 points and grabbed 1,292 rebounds in 71 games-Wait, you traded him to the Bucks? Well, let's hope this doesn't backfire... 1968-69 - 16-66 - One of the most horrid starts for a franchise in the NBA until the Grizzlies come around. Pretty much a carpet for every team in the league. Even the other expansion franchises. 1969 NBA Draft - The Suns lose a coin flip for the first overall pick in the draft to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks use it to draft Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, while the Suns draft Neal Walk. Well, let’s hope this Kareem guy doesn’t turn out to be anything special… 1970 - You rebound from that god awful season and make the playoffs your second year in existence. Not bad. But you lose in 7 to the Lakers. Remember that team. 1971 NBA Finals - Great news, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar got a ring! ...with the Bucks. Oh shit, they had Dick Cunningham as well? early 1970s - You have some great regular seasons during this time. Too bad it's not good enough to get you back into the playoffs. 1974 NBA Draft - You picked up an excellent addition to your team in George Gervin-wait, he chose to stay with the Spurs in the ABA? UGH... 1975 offseason - You got Paul Westphal, Alvan Adams and Ricky Sobers! Let's see if this helps. 1976 - My god, you not only made it back to the playoffs, you made the NBA Finals. Most of it was due to the Warriors choking on their own shit, but it's still admirable. You only finished 2 games above .500 in the regular season and you're heavy, and I mean HEAVY underdogs here. Hopefully you can shock the world... 1976 NBA Finals - Excellent! You tied the series with the Celtics up at 2 games a piece! Now go shock that Boston Garden crowd in Game 5! 1976 NBA Finals, Game 5 - We have ourselves a classic! The Suns came back from 18 points down to tie the game near the end of the 4th quarter! We're going to overtime, baby! 1OT - buzzer sounds Good job, Suns! Keep tiring the Celtics out! Now win the game in the second over time! 2OT - Alright, you're up by one with five seconds left. Just get one more stop and you're golden... "Havlicek touches it, it begins...3 seconds, handle off the gun, he's got it with a second! JOHN HAVLICEK WON IT!! IT'S OVER!" Fuck. Well, you did you best...wait, the final shot is being reviewed and they're putting time back on the clock?! My god, you have a chance now! Oh, the Suns had a technical foul assessed on them for calling too many timeouts?! Damn, now it's a 2 point game instead of 1. And you only have one second to get the ball in. Christ, this looks ugly... "Won't start until its touched, they'll have to throw it up...Gar Heard turnaround shot in the air...("GOOOOOD!!!!") IT'S GOOD! IT'S TIED AGAIN! ("UNBELIEVABLE!!!") I DON'T BELIEVE IT! Garfield Heard at the buzzer, threw one in outside, we've got a third overtime in the Boston Garden! It's 112-112! Unbelievable sequence!" My god, what a valiant effort! This is one for the ages! If 2 overtimes didn't tire out the Celtics, a third will! Put in the dagger! 3OT - Though you gave the Celtics a run for their money, they manage to squeak out the win by 2 points in the third overtime. Solid effort though. Hopefully you can force a Game 7 back in Phoenix. 1976 NBA Finals, Game 6 - Though you had the lead going into the 4th quarter, you immediately prolapse and the Celtics win the title. Sucks, but it was a great season for you guys! Better luck next year, boys. 1977 - Or...just go 34-48. You can do that. 1977 NBA Draft - At least you're shitty enough to draft another franchise star in Walter Davis! Don't waste his career too, guys. 1978 - You make it back to the playoffs, but get swept by the Bucks in the first round. 1979 - You return to the Western Conference Finals and manage to force a Game 7, but you lose on a nailbiter to the SuperSonics. 1980 - You start off the new decade by getting obliterated by the Lakers in the second round. 1981 - You won the Pacific Division with a 57-25 record. It does not save you from losing in the first round to the fucking Kings. 1982 - Get swept by those fucking Lakers in the second round again. 1983 - We picked up an excellent addition to the roster in James Edwards! But you once again lose in the first round. This time to the fucking Nuggets. We're losing to Denver now? 1984 - You make it back to the Conference Finals, only to lose in 6 to the fucking Laker Empire again.. 1985 - Enjoy the Laker Death Star again. This time in the form of a broom. 1987 - Tragedy strikes the team as promising young center Nick Vanos dies onboard Northwest Airlines Flight 255 which crashed outside of Detroit Metro Airport. May he rest in peace. 1987 continued - Unfortunately though, the misery gets worse as the Suns get wrapped up in a scandal. Suns star Walter Davis rats out three of his own teammates, who are then indited on drug-related charges! One of the accused is James Edwards, and since he's such a team cancer, he has to go! Hey, Detroit! You want him? Take him! Just take him! We don't care if we get a mediocre center and a second-round pick for it, JUST GET HIM THE FUCK OUTTA HERE! How's that for an Edwards dump?! 1988 offseason - Hey, you make an excellent trade for Kevin Johnson, Larry Nance and Mike Sanders! Jeff Hornacek is developing really well, and you make an excellent choice in the draft by selecting Dan Majerle! 1989 - You breeze through you first two playoff opponents and you made the Conference Finals again! This is one of the best chances you have at another Finals berth, so don't blow it! 1989 Western Conference Finals - Unfortunately you are then Death Starred by a aging Showtime Lakers squad. Even with all the injuries, the Evil Empire still makes you their bitch! 1990 - Holy shit, you actually beat the Lakers in a playoff series? But you get routed by the Trail Blazers in the West Finals. 1990 NBA Finals - As it turns out, James Edwards became an excellent asset to the Bad Boy Pistons and becomes a key contributor on back-to-back NBA championship winners. Maybe he wasn’t the real problem with your organization… 1991 - Another first round elimination at the hands of the Jazz. 1992 - Get buttfucked by the Trail Blazers again in the second round. 1992 offseason - You somehow managed to land Charles Barkley! The price isn't too steep, you only have to give Jeff Hornacek to the 76ers. And Paul Westphal returns, this time as you new head coach! Ah, fuck it. I'm sure you guys will be fine. 1993 - And you are more than fine! You finish with your best record in franchise history at 62-20, Charles Barkley wins MVP, and you made it back to the NBA Finals! The Bulls’ time is up, time for the Suns to take home that coveted Larry O'Brien Trophy! 1993 NBA Finals - Alright, you still have the lead in the final seconds and you are on the verge of forcing a home Game 7! Michael Jordan? BAH! It's Suns time, baby! "Pippen got the snap...here's PAXSON FOR THREE!! YES!!! THE BULLS TAKE A ONE POINT LEAD AND PHOENIX CALLS FOR TIME with three and five-tenths seconds remaining in the 4th quarter!" Agony, thy name is John Paxson. "Oliver Miller plays it...here's Johnson, Johnson gets-no he cannot get it off, -buzzer sounds- knocked away by Grant, it's all over! The Chicago Bulls have made it three straight NBA championships!" And congratulations, you have become the third victim of the Bulls dynasty. Your best season in franchise history, and you couldn't even beat the Bulls even with home court advantage. Pathetic. Just pathetic. Well, hope it won't be a while until you're back in the NBA Finals again... 1994 - Next year, in the second round of the playoffs, you blow a 2-0 series lead to the Rockets to go down 3-2 in the series. Despite winning Game 6 in a blowout, you get absolutely bludgeoned in Game 7. 1995 - Excellent! You have a 3-1 series lead against a dysfunctional Rockets squad in the second round! Time for revenge! 1995 NBA Playoffs, West Semis - You lost Game 5 in OT. Okay, not that big of a deal, you're still up 3-2 and have a chance to close the series in Houston. You got this. Game 6 - Really? This is how we're doing shit now? Don't do it, don't go full Suns on us now, ESPECIALLY to a 6th seeded team, and the team that beat you last year! You do this you may as well delete the franchise. You have Game 7 at home. No excuses. 1995 NBA Playoffs, West Semis Game 7 - Alright, you're up by 2 with seconds to go! Just get one stop and you're in the Conference Finals! You got this! "Elie out of the corner for three-HIT IT!! MARIO ELIE WITH A THREE!" -Elie does the kiss of death- Agony, thy name is Mario Elie. YOU BLEW IT!! 1995 NBA Finals - That Rockets team goes on to repeat as NBA champions. You get a trophy of smallpox. 1996 - Next year, you redeem yourselves by getting bitch-slapped in the first round by the Spurs. Also, I forgot to ask, how's that Barkley trade working out? 1996 offseason - He signed with the Rockets because of management you say... But hey, you managed to pick up two of the players that lead the Rockets to glory - Robert Horry and Sam Cassell! 1996 NBA Draft - It's time to restructure the franchise around a new star. This Steve Nash guy will do. 1997 - Your new acquisitions lead you nowhere. You also lose in 5 games to the SuperSonics in the first round. 1998 - Get smoked in the first round by the Spurs again! 1998 NBA Finals - Turns out Jeff Hornacek played a major role in helping the Jazz reach back-to-back NBA Finals appearances. I dunno, you might have been able to use him… 1998 offseason - We can do better than Steve Nash! Trade his ass to the Mavericks! 1999 - Get swept by the Trail Blazers again! 2000 - Oh, look. The start of the new millennium and you finally get to lose to the Lakers again. 2001 - You lose to the fucking Kings in the first round...again. 2002 - Return to mediocrity again. However, it's good enough to draft a promising star in Amar'e Stoudemire. Let's give him a shot. 2003 - Stoudemire wins rookie of the year, and you make it back to the playoffs, only to get bested by those fucking Spurs again! 2004 - You are terrible. Literally and figuratively terrible. Enjoy the basement, Suns fans! 2004 offseason - That Steve Nash guy turned out to be pretty good! Let's sign him as an unrestricted free agent! 2005 - You win the Pacific Division and go 62-20, Steve Nash wins MVP, and Mike D'Antoni wins Coach Of The Year! You're the overall #1 seed and you're favorites to win the title! Onwards to your glorious future! 2005 Western Conference Finals - Nope, you get dominated by the Spurs once again. You once again win 62 games, and you get turned into Texas Toast in less than a week. Like seriously, you couldn't even make a series out of this? God, you're pathetic. Piss off. 2006 - Ugh, you fell behind 3 games to 1 against the Lakers?! Just get it over with so I can get the liquor...wait...the Suns...didn't...fail? They're playing in the Conference Finals against the Mavericks of all teams? My god, someone is shedding their "choker" label this year! 2006 Western Conference Finals - Unfortunately, it's not you! 2006 NBA Draft - We need to build our roster some more! Let's draft this Rajon Rondo guy-wait, you traded him to the Celtics for a first-round pick?! GODDAMNIT, can you not?! 2007 - You once again win the Pacific Division with a 61-win season and you manage to beat the Lakers again. Many rewards await you...one of those rewards is whimpering in Game 6 to the Spurs. 2007 NBA Finals - Remember that Robert Horry guy you traded for but didn’t pan out? Turns out he wins his SEVENTH NBA title with the Spurs. Should’ve given him more time… 2008 - Make that 2 years in a row that you lose to the Spurs! Mike D'Antoni also defects to New York at the end of the season. 2008 NBA Finals - Hey, remember that Rajon Rondo guy you got rid off? Turns out he helped lead the Celtics to their first title in 22 years. Boston is still getting the best of you after all these years, eh? 2008 offseason - CONGRATULATIONS! You are the first stop on Shaquille O'Neal's 3-year retirement tour! 2009 - Shaq leads you nowhere. He's also gone after this season as well. 2010 - Okay, this has to be the year. You got past those pesky Trail Blazers in the first round and you got revenge on the Spurs! For the love of god, this has to be the year! 2010 Western Conference Finals - Nope, you go full Suns again. You lose in 6 games to whaddya know THE FUCKING LAKERS. (cue Tidus laughing scene) 2011 - Despite resigning most of your stars, you somehow collapse and miss the playoffs. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come. 2012-2013 - You miss the playoffs the next two years in the meantime. 2014 - Wow, you improved to 48 wins! Unfortunately, you don't come close to making the playoffs. You're getting there though! 2015 - Guess what, I lied. No playoffs yet again. 2015 offseason - We need a new face of the franchise to build around. This Devin Booker guy will do. 2016 - Despite drafting Booker, it is not enough to save the team's season. No playoffs again. 2017-19 - It gets worse. The team then enters a place they have not seen in a long time. The dark depths known as the basement. Not even Booker can save you from this dark fate. 2019 Stanley Cup Finals - The St. Louis Blues have won the Stanley Cup. What does this have to do with basketball? The Blues ended their Legacy of Failure, meaning the Suns now have the second longest championship drought of any expansion team. 2020 - Well, you managed to improve from last year. You aren't very good but you do have a shot at a playoff spot. Nope, COVID came around and the NBA has told you to fuck off. Even in the bubble you do not qualify for the playoffs. You’ve got promise though. Maybe next year will be it… 2020 offseason - To get better you need to make some moves again. Trade a nice package to the Thunder for Chris Paul and Abdel Nader. 2021 - At last, the Suns are finally relevant again! Booker and Paul were named All-Stars, and James Jones wins Executive of the Year! You finish with a 51-21 record, good enough for another Pacific Division title and the 2nd seed in the West! 2021 NBA Playoffs - The first playoff berth in over a decade! In the first round you allow us to laugh at LeMickey Mouse James and the Lakers in the first round! Yeah, fuck Los Angeles and their dead dynasty! And in the second round you allow us to laugh at the Nuggets again! You're in the Conference Finals again after 11 years! Don't let me down. 2021 Western Conference Finals - YOU DID IT!! You're back in the NBA Finals again after you ended the Clippers' foolish ambitions! So who are they playing next? pfft the Milwaukee Bucks?! HA, come on! They're not gonna lose to a team that hasn't won a title in 50 years! 2021 NBA Finals - Excellent, you waste no time and blow out the Bucks in the first two games of the series! Now finish them off! Game 3 - You got blown out. Okay, not that big of a deal, there's a chance to win Game 4. One step at a time now. You got this. Game 4 - Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... Game 5 - What in in the literal fuck is going on? Why are you prolapsing now? You fucking had them!! You had them dead to rights with a 2-0 series lead and now you're pulling this shit?!! Don't fucking do this to me... 2021 NBA Finals, Game 6 - And once again you choke away the Finals. To a team that hadn't won a title in over 50 years. Milwaukee is still getting the best of you after all these years, eh? "YOU BLEW IT!" 2022 - Alright, this HAS to be the year! The Suns get scorching hot this time! They set a new franchise record with a 64-18 record and are the overall #1 seed in the playoffs! Bring home the hardware! 2022 NBA Playoffs - In the first round you manage to fend off a hungry Pelicans team. And in the second round you're facing a young Mavericks team that you're favored heavily against! Time to turn the Mavs into Texas Toast and move on to the next round! 2022 NBA Playoffs, West Semis, Game 7 - What do you mean you went and laid the biggest egg in franchise history?! YOU LOST?!!! You had a 2-0 series lead and you couldn't even hold it?! And you then proceed to blow a 3-2 series lead and you then get absolutely BLOWN THE FUCK OUT in Game 7! This was your best season in franchise history, and you once again get turned into a laughing stock with no title to show for it. This is absolutely embarrassing. Piss off!! 2023 - Alright, you took a bit of a step back this year, but you returned to the playoffs again and allowed us to laugh at the Clippers again! Maybe this is the year...or they can lose in 6 games to the Nuggets...the desert sure is lacking in champions. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It's amazing isn't it? Almost 60 years in the league and all you have to show for it is an 0-3 record in the NBA Finals. Those division titles and other regular season awards mean jack shit. Their fans get triggered when hearing the words "Lakers", "Spurs", "Rockets" and "Mavericks", which is justified because those teams have owned them like slaves. At least the Phoenix has the Diamondbacks, who actually won a championship. Sure, it was over 20 years ago, but they still won one! I'd rather get behind them than this garbage heap of a franchise. submitted by DetroitOtaku to UrinatingTree [link] [comments] |

2023.07.17 18:41 Naismythology Top 250 Players (Careers + Peaks): #221-235 (OC)
Links to past posts:
Introduction/Methodology 236-250 One thing I wanted to point out from the comments last time is that this scoring system does not completely strip away results. It is very much based on "what actually happened" rather than trying to alleviate statistical noise by minimizing random chance events. For example, someone brought up Ray Allen's shot to tie Game 6 of the 2013 Finals, and how that single shot impacted the careers/legacies/scores of so many players involved, who had nothing to do with that shot going in or not. And that is very true (although that's probably the most extreme example I can think of, there are others that fit a similar mold). However, it may not affect the scores here as much as you might think.
I played with the numbers in the Career Score section of this, and just pretended that Allen misses that shot and the Spurs win. (The win shares would be ever so slightly different because they wouldn't have the stats from the subsequent Game 7 added in, but they'd be close.) Now, this gets a little tricky because it involves LeBron, and he is the top scorer for Career Score, so technically his score should remain at 1000 while everyone else moves up relative to him, but that doesn't really show you what's happening very well, so I just left the coefficient as it was so everyone could see how many points were gained or lost for each player:
LeBron James (who had a monster playoffs that year) loses 30.7 points. Kawhi Leonard gains 18.3. Tim Duncan gains 14.8. Tony Parker gains 14.2. Chris Bosh loses 13.0. Dwyane Wade loses 10.7. Ray Allen loses 8.8. Manu Ginobili gains 7.7. And Tracy McGrady loses 0.6. (McGrady had negative playoff win shares that season, so his score actually goes down despite winning a ring.) This is why I like to say to just give every player about 20 points of leeway either way in this system. Other than LeBron, everyone falls in that range for how a single shot would've affected their legacies. Obviously the more "what ifs" you want to string together, the higher you have to give for variance in a potential score, but I think it's important to remember that most people emphasize "what actually happened on the court" over "hypothetical skill levels" which is why we typically don't see amazingly skilled players/innovators like Pete Maravich, Earl Monroe, or Kyrie Irving in the upper echelon on lists like this, because despite their undeniable talent, they didn't have a
ton of on court achievements to go with it.
Anyway, back to the countdown. Today we start with my childhood pastor's favorite player from the 90s. Why was he his favorite? I have no idea. Much like the rest of religion, this, too, will forever remain a mystery.
- 235. Vin Baker - 81.9
- Career - 57.6
- 1994-2006
- MIL, SEA, BOS, NYK, HOU, LAC
- 47.0 Win Shares
- 0.021 Adjusted MVP Award Shares
- 1x All-NBA Second Team Selection
- 1x All-NBA Third Team Selection
- 4x All-Star Selections
- Peak - 106.2
- Other achievements:
- America East Player of the Year (1993)
- Olympic Gold Medalist (2000)
- Baker is another player, where if you look at just his first five or six seasons, you'd think he was 100% on track to make the Hall of Fame. Alcoholism and mental health issues were the culprits for derailing his career, rather than injuries, but still, never fun to see.
- I really like the 2000 Olympic squad that Baker was on. Not in a "oh, this team is so awesome/fun to watch" kind of way, but just that it gives off major "are we still sending our best players to this thing? Do we still care about this thing?" energy. Here's the team: Ray Allen, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett, Tim Hardaway, Jason Kidd, Alonzo Mourning, Gary Payton... okay, so far so good, that's seven Hall of Famers or very likely Hall of Famers. Good start. Then we move on to: Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Vin Baker, Allan Houston, Antonio McDyess, and Steve Smith. So, you know, five All-Star level guys. But in 1992 and 1996 we sent teams with 11 Hall of Famers each, and the twelfth guy was Christian Laettner and Anfernee Hardaway, respectively. You can see the cracks start to appear...
- 234. Kemba Walker - 81.9
- Career - 61.7
- 2012-2023
- CHA/CHO, BOS, NYK, DAL
- 59.8 Win Shares
- 1x All-NBA Third Team Selection
- 4x All-Star Selection
- 1.9 Conference Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 102.1
- Other achievements:
- NCAA Champion (2011)
- NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player (2011)
- Bob Cousy Award winner (2011) - given to the best collegiate point guard in a given season
- 2x NBA Sportsmanship Award (2017, 2018)
- Walker had an absolutely incredible college run. I will be surprised if he doesn't end up in the College Basketball Hall of Fame as a result. Unfortunately for him, I don't think the NBA resume adds enough to make into the overall Hall of Fame, but that's still impressive.
- Side note: Can we just talk about how ridiculous it is that we have a FIBA Hall of Fame, a National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, and a Women's Basketball Hall of Fame (where each group is represented within the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame), but we don't have either an "NBA Hall of Fame" or a "North American Professional Basketball Hall of Fame" yet?
- Side side note: If anyone is in the process of getting a "North American Professional Basketball Hall of Fame" off the ground, please get in contact with me.
- Correct me if this is wrong, but Walker is the first player I can remember who was eligible for a supermax contract, and instead of offering him the supermax, Charlotte offered him less, and lost him for nothing. Now I'm not saying Charlotte should have offered him a supermax (because I think they were right not to do so), but not trading him during the season when you already knew how that was going to play out was a wild decision.
- 233. Bill Bridges - 82.3
- Career - 67.3
- 1963-1975
- STL/ATL, PHI, LAL, GSW
- 59.9 Win Shares
- 0.021 Adjusted MVP Award Shares
- 3x All-Star Selection
- 0.3 Championship Win Shares (1975 - GSW)
- 1.1 Finals Win Shares
- 3.6 Conference Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 97.3
- Other achievements:
- All-ABL First Team (1962)
- 1x ABL Champion (1963)
- 10,000 Rebound Club (11,054; 30th all-time)
- Despite being drafted by the Chicago Packers (now Washington Wizards), Bridges played his first two seasons in the American Basketball League for the Kansas City Steers. And if you thought the ABA was the first startup, "rival" league to the NBA, have I got news for you.
- So the ABL's first season was 1961-62. The league started, mostly out of spite (which is always the best reason to start doing anything) because the owner of the Harlem Globetrotters, Abe Saperstein, was not given an NBA expansion franchise in Los Angeles. He felt he was owed, but the league let the Lakers move there instead. So Saperstein gets together with the National Alliance of Basketball Leagues team owners and the Amateur Athletic Union team owners (including a young-ish George Steinbrenner) and convinces a lot of teams to break away from their current affiliations and join a league that would rival the NBA.
- Meanwhile, Steinbrenner (who owned the Cleveland Pipers) signed college/Olympic star Jerry Lucas to headline his team, which led to Maurice Podoloff (NBA commissioner at the time) to try to bring the Pipers into the NBA. Well, the Royals (in Cincinnati at the time) complained that they'd lose a lot of their fan base if a team was put in Cleveland, and a bunch of fees were added on, and the Pipers (who had won the first ABL title) were forced to fold, which eventually caused the whole league to collapse. Very Game of Thronesian stuff, here. Fun times!
- The ABL was also the first league to have a three-point line. (Not the ABA as you usually hear.)
- Anyway, back to Bridges. The guy was an absolute rebounding machine. He is one of four players to grab over 35 rebounds in a playoff game. He got 36 against the Knicks in 1971. Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and Willis Reed are the only other players to do that.
- 232. Karl-Anthony Towns - 82.9
- Career - 61.8
- 2016-2023
- MIN
- 68.7 Win Shares
- 2x All-NBA Third Team Selections
- 3x All-Star Selections
- Peak - 104.1
- Other achievements:
- Rookie of the Year (2016)
- I'm not putting Three-Point Contest winners or Slam Dunk Contest winners in the "other achievements." I'm just not doing it.
- Towns gets hated on quite a bit because he's somewhat delusional about his current place in NBA history/relevance, But he should get some credit for having the highest three-point percentage for a season for a center that I can find (.421 in 2018). Towns is also 66th all-time in career 3P% at .395. (Which is ahead of Reggie Miller, I should probably add.) The next highest center I could find was Meyers Leonard at 82nd overall with a .390. After that I didn't see a center until Christian Wood at 157th with .379.
- Anyway, the point is, Towns and Gobert should not be on the same team.
- 231. Rolando Blackman - 83.2
- Career - 72.1
- 1982-1994
- DAL, NYK
- 75.6 Win Shares
- 0.001 Adjusted MVP Award Shares
- 4x All-Star Selections
- 1.0 Conference Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 94.3
- Other achievements:
- Big Eight Player of the Year (1980)
- Greek League All-Star (1994)
- Italian League Champion (1996)
- Italian Cup Winner (1996)
- Italian Cup MVP (1996)
- College Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee (2015)
- #22 retired by Dallas Mavericks
- The best fun fact I have about Blackman is that he was supposed to be on the 1980 Olympic Team, but never got to participate because the United States boycotted the Olympics that year due to them being held in Moscow. (I mean, that wasn't the stated reason. The stated reason was because of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, but, I mean, there's a pretty good chance America would have just found a reason anyway.) The decision to boycott the Olympics was made in April 1980, and those games started in July 1980, so everybody was all ready to go, and that team was already set. Here's the roster:
- Mark Aguirre
- Rolando Blackman
- Sam Bowie
- Michael Brooks
- Bill Hanzlik
- Alton Lister
- Rodney McCray
- Isiah Thomas
- Darnell Valentine
- Danny Vranes
- Buck Williams
- Al Wood
- I'm not saying the United States definitely would've won. But I am saying that team would've featured four future multi-selection All-Stars in Aguirre, Blackman, Thomas, and Williams.
- 230. Dick Van Arsdale - 83.4
- Career - 68.9
- 1966-1977
- NYK, PHO
- 75.2 Win Shares
- 3x All-Star Selection
- 0.8 Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 97.9
- Other achievements:
- 1x All-Defensive Second Team Selection
- #5 retired by the Phoenix Suns
- One sure way to know if people know about "Vintage" basketball is if they try to rank the Van Arsdale twins. Dick Van Arsdale was good! Well, pretty good anyway. Tom Van Arsdale holds the distinction of being the player who played in the most games without ever making the playoffs. (929 games, to be exact.) His closest competition right now is Buddy Hield, at 548 games. Most people just rank the two brothers somewhat close to each other and call it a day.
- 229. Fat Lever - 84.2
- Career - 62.7
- 1983-1992, 1994
- POR, DEN, DAL
- 61.2 Win Shares
- 0.047 Adjusted MVP Award Shares
- 1x All-NBA Second Team Selection
- 2x All-Star Selections
- 0.7 Conference Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 105.6
- Other achievements:
- 1x All-Defensive Second Team Selection
- #12 retired by Denver Nuggets
- Imagine having a name as cool as "Lafayette Lever" (pronounced "LEE-ver"), and having everyone call you "Fat" instead.
- 228. Phil Chenier - 85.0
- Career - 54.3
- 1972-1981
- BAL/CAP/WSB, IND, GSW
- 39.3 Win Shares
- 0.042 Adjusted MVP Award Shares
- 1x All-NBA Second Team Selection
- 3x All-Star Selection
- 1.8 Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 115.8
- Other achievements:
- #45 retired by the Washington Wizards
- Chenier was on the roster for the 1978 NBA Champion Washington Bullets, but he was hurt and didn't play in the playoffs that year, so he doesn't get any credit for that here.
- 227. Gilbert Arenas - 86.0
- Career - 57.4
- 2002-2012
- GSW, WAS, ORL, MEM
- 51.4 Win Shares
- 0.027 Adjusted MVP Award Shares
- 1x All-NBA Second Team Selection
- 2x All-NBA Third Team Selection
- 3x All-Star Selections
- Peak - 114.7
- Other achievements:
- Most Improved Player (2003)
- It feels like Arenas has had an outsized impact on the league. Second round pick to Most Improved Player to All-NBA player to suspended for almost an entire season for bringing guns into the locker room to the first player waived by the amnesty clause. That's a lot. Plus he gave us "The Gilbert Arenas Rule," which allows teams to match restricted free agent offers on second round picks even if they’re over the cap.
- 226. Serge Ibaka - 86.4
- Career - 77.0
- 2010-2022
- OKC, ORL, TOR, LAC, MIL
- 73.0 Win Shares
- 3x All-Defensive First Team Selection
- 1.2 Championship Win Shares (1 title - 2019 TOR)
- 1.8 Finals Win Shares
- 4.9 Conference Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 95.7
- Other achievements:
- Olympic Silver Medalist (2012)
- It's still pretty wild that a team with a young core of Durant, Westbrook, Harden, and Ibaka, all in their early-20's, only ever made it to one Finals and never won a title.
- If you want to throw Spain in there too as another "almost dynasty," I won't blame you. (Though Spain did win a lot of tournaments and medals, just not the Olympics, so it's not quite the same.)
- 225. Jrue Holiday - 87.2
- Career - 72.4
- 2010-2023
- PHI, NOP, MIL
- 63.1 Win Shares
- 2x All-Star Selection
- 3x All-Defensive First Team Selection
- 2.1 Championship Win Shares (1 title - 2021 MIL)
- Peak - 101.8
- Other achievements:
- Olympic Gold Medalist (2020)
- 3x Teammate of the Year Award (2020, 2022, 2023)
- Sportsmanship Award (2021)
- 2x All-Defensive Second Team Selection
- 5,000 Assist Club (5,868; 41st all-time)
- Holiday's ten-year gap between All-Star Selections (2013 & 2023) is by far the longest ever. I know Johnny Green had a six-year gap (1965 & 1971), but I feel like there might have been a seven-year one that I'm blanking on now. If anyone knows that one let me know.
- My brother-in-law is named "Drew," and we pretty consistently have friendly arguments about whether his name and Jrue Holiday's name are pronounced the same.
- 224. Dan Roundfield - 87.4
- Career - 68.3
- 1976 (ABA), 1977-1987
- INA/IND, ATL, DET, WSB
- 65.2 Win Shares
- 0.047 Adjusted MVP Award Shares (1 top five finish)
- 1x All-NBA Second Team Selection
- 3x All-Star Selection
- 3x All-Defensive First Team Selection
- 1.3 ABA Win Shares
- Peak - 106.5
- Other achievements:
- MAC Player of the Year (1975)
- 2x All-Defensive Second Team Selection
- I don't have a ton to say about Roundfield. He was a very solid player, but never really seemed to dominate games. He was just consistently very good for most of his career.
- A bit macabre here, I suppose, but it's a detail worth mentioning: he died in 2012 at the age of 59 while saving his wife from drowning. He managed to get her to safety but got swept out in the currents himself.
- 223. Alex Groza - 88.2
- Career - 55.6
- 1950-1951
- INO
- 35.9 Win Shares
- 2x All-NBA First Team Selection
- 1x All-Star Selection
- 2.2 Conference Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 120.9
- Other achievements:
- Olympic Gold Medalist (1948)
- 2x NCAA Champion (1948, 1949)
- 2x NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player (1948, 1949)
- Rookie of the Year Award (unofficial, 1950)
- Groza is definitely the biggest "what if" in my mind in NBA history. Just look at that resume! Prior to even entering the NBA he had a gold medal and two NCAA titles. If he'd managed to win a title before 1956, he would've been the first player to ever win all three. (Clyde Lovellette owns that distinction instead.) And it seems like it could've been possible given his NBA resume through two years: Rookie of the Year, two All-NBA First Team Selections, an All-Star Selection (the All-Star game's inaugural year was Groza's second season), and a Conference Finals appearance. Plus, look at those win shares! 35.9 in two years! Donovan Mitchell has 37.9 career win shares and he just finished his sixth season, with four of them at an All-Star level.
- So what happened to Groza and why do we not know him as one of the greatest of all-time? Groza got banned from the league because of his involvement in the college point-shaving scandal of the early 1950s. At the time, college sports were way more popular than professional sports (except baseball), and of course, college players didn't make any money then. So the mafia found it pretty easy to bribe players to shave points or throw games, and as all the big games/tournaments were held in Madison Square Garden, it was pretty easy to contact a lot of big players at the big schools at the time.
- The NBA, still trying to find its footing at this point, banned Groza (and others) as soon as they were implicated, but Groza did eventually plead guilty to point-shaving while he was in college. I still say a lifetime ban is a bit harsh, but this was one of those unforgiveable "integrity of the game" sins at the time, like steroids in baseball, or randomly switching your jersey number every so often nowadays.
- Much more fun fact about Groza: his parents were immigrants from Transylvania (that's 100% true).
- One more: His brother was Lou Groza, legendary kicker for the Cleveland Browns and NFL Hall of Famer. (Obviously the "Lou Groza Award" is named after him, which goes to the best college football kicker every year.) I can think of several sets of siblings who made/have the potential to make the Hall of Fame in the same sport, but I think this would've been the only instance of brothers potentially being in Halls of Fame for different sports. (The closest comparison I can think of is Jackie and Mack Robinson. Jackie for baseball, Mack for track and field. There is a Track & Field Hall of Fame, but Mack isn't in it as far as I can tell.)
- 222. Archie Clark - 88.4
- Career - 65.9
- 1967-1976
- LAL, PHI, BAL/CAP, SEA, DET
- 64.7 Win Shares
- 0.027 Adjusted MVP Award Shares
- 1x All-NBA Second Team Selection
- 2x All-Star Selection
- 0.8 Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 110.9
- I don't know if you want to say he was the "centerpiece" of the trade that brought Wilt Chamberlain to the Lakers, but he was a young guard coming off his second season and an All-Star selection, so it was probably who the Sixers were most interested in. (They also got Darrall Imhoff and Jerry Chambers in the deal.)
- He was one of five co-founders of the National Basketball Retired Players Association (Dave DeBusschere, Dave Bing, Dave Cowens, and Oscar Robertson were the others). Don't think "Players Association" union type of thing here. This was more of a "what do I do with my life after basketball" kind of organization.
- 221. Jeff Mullins - 88.5
- Career - 70.3
- 1965-1976
- STL, SFW/GSW
- 62.8 Win Shares
- 3x All-Star Selection
- 0.7 Championship Win Shares (1 title - 1975 GSW)
- 1.5 Finals Win Shares
- 1.5 Conference Finals Win Shares
- Peak - 106.7
- Other achievements:
- Olympic Gold Medalist (1964)
- ACC Player of the Year (1964)
- The 1975 Warriors were the original "two-timelines" Warriors. They had their star in Rick Barry (8th season), two former veteran All-Stars in Mullins and Bill Bridges (10th/penultimate season, and 12th/final season respectively), a future All-Star in rookie Phil Smith, and a future Hall of Famer in rookie Jamaal Wilkes. (Everyone else on the roster had between 1 and 4 years experience.)

2023.07.07 23:57 Embarrassed_Tax4975 Should I be worried to PCS?
I got an assignment notification to Dyess about 2 months ago. My RNLT is 30 Sep. My wife wants to live on base so she contacted housing and they essentially stated "there's a wait list, send us your orders to get on it". Seems fine. Still almost 3 months to go so I'm not too stressed about it. But now I see all these posts and comment chains about how AFPC just isn't giving people their PCS orders or something? If orders are required for getting on housing wait lists, how can they possibly excuse not sending them out on time? Also, BAH is $1,800 but most local family homes rent for like $2,300? How is this going to work out?

2023.06.17 12:50 lazylittlelady Book 4: Chapters 38 & 39
Happy Saturday, Middlemarchers. Apparently, we are on a political campaign with Mr. Brooke this week.
Summary:
Chapter 38 begins with Sir James and the Cadwalladers discussing Mr. Brooke's new venture,
The Pioneer and his plan to stand for office. Sir James is sensitive about Celia hearing this matter. The rival Tory paper,
The Trumpet has begun to attack Mr. Brooke for being a negligent landlord while pretending to care about the common man. We learn Mr. Farebrother has Whiggish intimations himself and that Mr. Bulstrode is supporting Mr. Brooke's campaign. Sir James is concerned about the family being dragged through the mud in the midst of political fighting. We learn that Sir James and Celia have had Mr. Ladislaw over to the Hall and he also doesn't want Mr. Brooke to stand, but already rumors about him are flying around that he is "
a quill-driving alien, a foreign emissary, and what not". Mrs. Cadwallader is of the opinion that finance will take the reins and persuade Mr. Brooke otherwise. Rector Cadwallader is of the opinion that the
Trumpet's efforts may help Mr. Brooke see to his charge as a landlord of Tipton. They also bring up Mr. Garth, who used to manage his estate very well but was dismissed 12 years ago, when Mr. Brooke wanted to take up charge. Sir James mentions that Dorothea may be able to change his mind since she was involved in the estate and interested in matters before leaving for her new home. The Rector mentions that Mr. Casaubon looked terrible when he saw him at the Archdeacon's meeting. We learn Dodo won't even visit her sister after his fit. They decide to start a joint attack and then, fortuitously or not, Mr. Brooke arrives. He parries their attempts to make him see sense and leaves quickly.
Chapter 39 finds Sir James still meditating on Dodo's influence with her uncle and plans with Celia to get her over there, then drop her at her uncle's. She arrives as Mr. Brooke and Will Ladislaw are in the library and surprises both as they are working on arranging documents. Ladislaw is a smitten kitten and Mr. Brooke delighted to see his niece. She gives them an impassioned speech about the miserable state of the estate's cottages and says she heard Mr. Garth will give an updated evaluation so repairs and values can be changed. Mr. Brooke prevaricates. Ladislaw gets Dorothea alone and announces Mr. Casaubon has forbidden him to visit Lowick. Dodo reveals a melancholy about her situation. Mr. Brooke takes a carriage with Dodo to visit one of his cottages on the way to dropping her home, where Dagley's son has poached a leveret. Mr. Brooke thinks he is an easy and pleasant landlord but rather finds the sharp edge of Dagley's tongue when he arrives, and sees what Dorothea mentioned in her speech about the state of the cottage. Dagley mentions with scorn his efforts at "Rinform". Mr. Brooke makes a speedy exit again, hopefully with something to ponder.
Context and Notes: The beginning of the Tory vs. Whig rivalry, so you get a taste of history.
More about the
"Landed Gentry" at a glance -and even more
in-depth article.
More about leverets-a first-year
Hare.
Francois Guizot's quote: "The judgment of men on human actions means much; sooner or later it prove effectual".
John Doone's "The Undertaking" Mr. Farebrother supports
The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Mr. Brooke wants to get rid of Oliver because he is a
Peelite. Running for office is similar to
Phlebotomy. Is Middlemarch the new
East Retford?
Rector Cadwallader has to pay Mr. Brooke a
modus decimandi. Mr. Brooke mentions
LaFitte, misquotes
Horace, and opines on
Ovid. Do you know

2023.05.31 06:40 7o7soldier No college credits/Uneducated veteran trying to maximize the last of my Chapter 33
I barely managed to graduate high school to join the army. I dropped out of community college and paid back the VA what i owed from my last attempt at school. It seems an easy online program is all i am capable of. I concentrate much better in front of a computer. any recommendations would be appreciated. bonus points if you know an easy hybrid program that pays more bah, with very limited in class time. I am now aware of places like Golden gate university, and am more interested in classes that i can pass and are more suitable to my education(i have no college credits) rather than trying to maximize profits.also, if someone could easily explain how to turn my army training into college credits feel free. im smart, just a little ignorant and uneducated. thanks.

The NBA Playoffs are nearing its conclusion, and this time of the year has always been my favorite. Fans and analysts alike often think that the ascension to a championship is a linear endeavor and that teams making the Conference Finals this year will surely reach a higher plane of competition in the years following their Conference Finals appearance because they now have the playoff experience required for a deep run, or they are just a single piece away! However, both history and data shows that for organizations a conference finals appearance is more than likely the apex of their NBA postseason climb rather than a stepping stone towards the Larry O’Brien Trophy. This analysis will look at what happens to those conference finals bridesmaids in the years after their appearance and attempt to discover if there is a correlation to the adage of “climbing the ladder of postseason success”, or is losing before the biggest stage a death sentence for an organization's championship hopes.
The 2011 Eastern Conference Finals was the genesis of this idea for me, as the Lebron-Era Heat trounced the Derrick Rose-led Chicago Bulls in 5 games. Looking at that roster, with Rose, Deng, and Noah there was great optimism that this team would be battling the Heatles year-in-and-year-out for the next couple years. However, the future for this team was forgettable.
- Year 1 Post CF Loss - (50-16) Lost Round 1 to the 76ers - This was the year of the D-Rose ACL tear in game 1 of the playoffs
- Year 2 - (45-37) Lost Conference Semis to Heat - D Rose missed the whole year, but a rookie was on his way to superstardom in Jimmy Butler! Hope reigns supreme!
- Year 3 - (48-34) Lost Round 1 to the Wizards. While Jimmy was rising to superstardom and Noah put together a DPOY season, Rose had another meniscus tear early in the season, lowering the teams ceiling. But if they put it all together…
- Year 4 - (50-32) Lost Conference Semis to Bron’s Cav’s. Rose managed to play 50 games and regain some ability and Jimmy was in All-Star Mode. And aging Pau brought in to give some front court punch. But Lebron came home and like years past dispatched the Bulls
- Year 5 - (42-40) - Lottery Team. Upper Management was upset with the team’s inability to breakthrough and decided to move from Thibs. With a largely unchanged core (Lost Noah to injury midway through) the team under-performs under Hoiberg.
And just like that, a team that showed great promise was then back to the treadmill of mediocrity. Five years is a lifetime in terms of NBA team construction and by year 6 post Conference Finals appearance, the roster was completely turned over. This led me to question, is this Bulls team an outlier in terms performance Conference Finals appearance, or are they part of the norm.
About the Analysis
First, I went about cataloging every conference final loser since the ABA-NBA Merger in the 1976-1977 Season, and logged their playoff results for 5 years post Conference Finals appearance. Currently we are looking at 92 Observations (More recent years do not have all 5 Years recorded), below are the tabulated results
Table 1: Conference Finals Loser’s Results 5 years post CF appearance | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | Year 4 | Year 5 |
Champion | 5 | 10 | 6 | 6 | 2 |
Lost Finals | 8 | 5 | 6 | 5 | 7 |
Conference Finals | 12 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 9 |
Conference Semis | 23 | 19 | 15 | 12 | 15 |
1st Round | 31 | 33 | 29 | 29 | 21 |
Lottery | 12 | 15 | 22 | 25 | 29 |
I did a Chi Square Test to determine whether a year affected the difference in performance and got the following results from running Pearson’s Chi-Squared Test.X-squared = 24.639, df = 20, p-value = 0.2156 *Note BOS, MIA and DEN fates are not finalized in this, so they are not included in this Chi SQ test and table*
We fail to reject the null hypothesis, and it is not statistically significant that years affect performance of these teams. In layman’s terms, the playoff results for these Conference Finals Losing teams is independent of the year during the timeframe of the analysis. So while it may look like Year 2 is the year for reclamation, that’s more statistical noise than anything. It does however begin to paint the picture that for most Conference Finals losers, this is merely the best result they will achieve.
Below shows the percentage of teams that had the following result occur within the 5 years post CF appearance. *BOS 2020 (2018 already made a CF), MIA 2022 and DEN 2020 are all included because they will at least appear in the CF*
Table 2: Counts and percentages of results during the 5 year span Champions | Lost Finals | Conference Finals | Conference Semis | 1st Round | Lottery |
17 (18.4%) | 26 (28.3%) | 36 (39.1%) | 52 (56.2%) | 74 (80.4%) | 53 (57.6%) |
To do a further dive on the numbers:
- 9 Teams (09.8%) Won Multiple Rings *Bulls 1st 3-Peat is a double entry * No team since 2001 Spurs
- 35 Teams (38.0%) Reached an NBA Finals
- 54 Teams (58.7%) Reached the Conference Finals or better
- 39 Teams (42.3 %) Never Missed the playoffs
On to the darker side of the equation
- 53 Teams (57.6%) Missed the playoffs at least once
- 27 Teams (29.3%) Missed the playoffs at least twice
- 16 Teams (17.4 %) Missed the playoffs at least three times
3 Teams (3.3%) Missed the Playoffs and Won a championship within that 5 year period (5.7% of the 53 teams that made the lottery during that span). Those 3 teams were all very unique circumstances:
- 1995 Spurs who had the lottery because of the absence of their star, David Robinson, in Year 2, subsequently won the lottery and drafted Tim Duncan.
- 2005 Heat rode the crescendo of the Shaq/DWade pairing and then had to retool the roster
- 2016 Raptors, solid mid-tier contender who witnessed the beauty of prime Kawhi for a year, then slowly fell apart
The odds of winning a title in that 5 year span are roughly equal to missing the playoffs 3 times during that same period. This just goes to show the extreme temporaneous nature of success in the NBA. It is just as easy for a team to make the breakthrough as for the team to have to tear it all down.
This led me down a path looking towards the next logical question, “Do teams work their way up from a Conference Finals loss before winning a championship?”Looking at Titles since 1982 (5 years after our start date) we have currently
41 champions.
22 of those champions lost in the CF before winning. If we break it down even further into 2 eras (Jordan Era and Before and Post-Jordan).
11 out of 17 (64.7%) Jordan Era and Before champions are members of the Conference Finals loser’s club. And
Post Jordan we have 11 out of 24 champions (45.8%). While I believe sample sizes are probably too small to get meaningful statistical analysis, it's an interesting thought experiment to think of whether the Post Jordan years which are highlighted by greater player movement, does this lend itself to team building through star acquisition rather than a climbing the stairs of success of continually making small upgrades.
The next thing to look at is whether or not making Top 4 in the NBA gives you the top 4 odds of winning a championship. If all teams at the level are equal, being in the final four of NBA Teams should say that on average you could win a championship 25% of the time, however when we extend that to 5 years post, we see only that 18.4% of teams actually win a championship during that window. The first idea I had was to look at a binomial distribution where p=0.25,n=5 X=1 and see what the P(X>=1) is. For those not well versed in statistics, basically what I’m doing is seeing all the results of flipping a weighted coin (25% chance of heads) and seeing what the percentage of getting at least 1 head in 5 flips should be. That number is 76.3%! That means that roughly ¾’s of the time we *should* be seeing a team win a ring, if they were in the Top 4 of teams. But as we know tiers and talent in the NBA is very fluid and thus this example only works if tiers are static, but once again shows the short shelf life of the competitive threshold for non-title teams.
At the end of the post, I will include a pared down version of the spreadsheet I am looking at, but before then I want to explain the extra calculated columns:
Wild Score - This is just a count of the number of different season outcomes the team had over the 5 year span. 5 is the maximum and would mean every year yielded a different result, 1 is the minimum and means that the team got the same result each time
Crash Score - This is the amount of times the team missed the playoffs in the last 3 years of the 5 year span.
20 Teams (21.7%) Missed at least twice, and of those teams 1
2 teams (13.0%) missed the playoffs the 3 final years. It should be noted that no team has won a championship in the 5 years and has a Crash Score of 2 or higher. So in review, winning a championship is hard. Roughly 1/3rd of teams that lose in the conference finals actually surpass that result in the following 5 years. It’s also more than likely that your seasons after this are interrupted with stretch of bad luck or regression to the mean causing you to miss the postseason. So in other words, even though your team fell short of the ultimate goal, it still got farther than 26 other teams that year and it’s a reason to be proud.Below is a collection of 4 teams I pulled out from the data, to give some historical context to their odd numbers.
2012 Spurs - Only Wild Score of 5
- Year 0 - (50-16) Lost to the Thunder in the Conference Finals - At that point the Spurs looked old and that maybe father time was finally starting to catch up, as no new young star had developed.
- Year 1 - (58-24) Lost Finals to Miami Heat.- Kawhi began his to become a consistent player, and the Tim, Manu, and Tony Core put it all together for another shot at glory, only for Ray Allen put a dagger through it in the end.
- Year 2 - (62-20) Beat Miami Heat to Win NBA Final - One of the most fun revenge tours in recent memory, Kawhi became part of the national consciousness and one of the greater Spurs bench mobs brought Tim and Pop their 5th title.
- Year 3 - (55-27) Lost to Clippers in Round 1 - . Core got older and the Lob City Clippers got their signature playoff series victory.
- Year 4 - (67-15) Lost to Thunder in Conference Semis- . Duncan’s last ride, Kawhi was at his peak of Spurs Ball, and the addition of Lamarcus Aldrige made this team look like title contenders. However, the now older Thunder appeared again and KD and Russ took them down before losing a heartbreaker to the Warriors and taking a harder road.
- Year 5 - (61-21) Lost to Warriors in Conference Finals - Year 1 Post Duncan. What looked like the coronation of a new era for the Spurs ended with Zaza’s foot and Uncle Dennis. This team has a Crash Score of 3 and hasn’t recovered yet.
2004 Timberwolves - Wild Score 1, Crash Score 3
- Year 0 - (58-24) Lost Conference Finals to the Lakers- KG was paired with some good but fading talent as 30+ Year Olds Latrell Spreewell and Sam Cassell give KG some extra punch and show that maybe this team has 1 more run left in them.
- Year 1 - (44-38) Miss Playoffs- finish 1 game behind the Fightin Hubie’s Grizzlies. Age started to catch up as Cassell and Spree regress and Sam misses 20ish games. Flip Saunders fired mid season for Mchale.
- Year 2 - (33-49)- Dwayne Casey is in charge and management makes a swap of Wally Sczerbiak for Ricky Davis (and the pick later to be used on Johnny Flynn). A missed draft pick that summer dooms them as they swap Brandon Roy for Randy Foye.
- Year 3 - (32-50) - Casey is fired mid year while they are 20-20 and Randy Wittmnan comes in and goes 12-30 down the stretch. *Was Wally Sczerbiak the missing piece /s* Randy Foye looks ok as the 7th Pick, trading him for Brandon Roy was bad enough but also missing out on Lowry, Millsap, JJ , Rudy Gay and Rondo proves to be the nail in the coffin. KG asks for a trade that summer.
- Year 4 - (22-60) - Randy Wittman continues to be employed, In the first year post KG, the Wolves decide to turn back the clock and employ one of my favorite anachronistic players in Al Jefferson, he averages 20/11 but the wolves cant do much else. Wolves try drafting 2 players of the Back-to-Back NCAA Champion Gators, but that doesn’t contribute much to winning.
- Year 5 - (24-58)- Randy Wittman is finally let go after a 4-15 start and Kevin Mchale fills in and doesn't do too much better. They are still firmly in the wilderness of the No Ticket Era, but hey Kevin Love looks good as a rookie and there’s always next year! (*Director it would be 8 more years until they made the playoffs*)
2010 Suns - Wild Score 1, Crash Score 3
- Year 0 - (54-28) Lost Conference Finals to the Lakers - Alvin Gentry’s first full season as Suns coach was a success after coming on as interim and the Arizona desert continued to be a fountain of youth as Nash and Grant Hill both had great seasons at an advanced age (same age I am now *sad*)
- Year 1 - (40-42) Miss the playoffs - Amare Left for NYK and without him a large shadow (Standing Tall and Talented) loomed over Phoenix . The additions of Vince Carter and Gortat proved to not be enough as Phoenix finished 6 games out.
- Year 2 - (33-33) Missed the playoffs by 3 games - , While the team had a balanced attack, it lacked a real go-to scorer as Gortat led the team with 15.4 PPG
- Year 3 - (27-57)- With Nash going to LAL where we all thought “This is going to be Fun”, Phoenix was left rudderless. Nash could carry a less-talented squad to respectability, without him they languished. Gentry fired mid-season after going 13-28
- Year 4 - (48-34) Missed the Playoffs by 1 game- Jeff Hornacek did a great job as coach and were victims of being in the wrong conference as this team would have finished tied for 3rd in the least that year. Dragic and Bledsoe (who maybe then wanted to be there) paced the team in scoring and Gerald Green(!!!) averaged a career high! Maybe next year things would break their way.
- Year 5 - (39-43) Things did not break their way. Goran was traded mid season for Danny Granger and some picks, Danny never plays for the Suns and they don’t make the playoffs for another 6 years.
2003 Pistons Wild Score 3, Crash Score 0, The only team to reach the Conference Finals every year
- Year 0 - (50-32) Lost to the New Jersey Nets in the Eastern Conference Finals. Team definitely has a core worth building around with Rip Hamilton, Chauncey, and Ben Wallace but gets blown-out in a sweep by the Nets. Joe Dumars begins one of the best series of moves (save for 1) in NBA History
- Year 1 - (54-28) Wins the NBA Championship against the Lakers. Dumars does 2 masterful moves, Letting Carlisle go for Vagabond Larry Brown. And swinging a trade for Rasheed Wallace. It becomes a match made in heaven as the Pistons become one of the best “Teams” to win a title. However, the draft before they passed on D-Wade/Bosh et al for the project Darko Milicic. Also funny historical note, the Pistons gave up two 1sts in the draft for Sheed, 1 becoming Tony Allen who would have been a fun fit, the other being Josh Smith who would have also been a fun fit (we will not discuss his actual Pistons tenure)
- Year 2 - (54-28) Lost NBA Finals to the Spurs - They ran it back and almost pulled it out in one the ugliest throwback to Knick-Rockets brickfest finals of yore. A Robert Horry Dunk seals their fate.
- Year 3 - (64-18) Lost the Eastern Conference Finals to the Miami Heat. After an amazing two years with the Pistons, Larry Brown eyes the bag and heads to Knicks to become the highest paid coach in the league. Flip Saunders replaces him (after being fired from the above-mentioned Twolves) and has a career year. The Pistons are beaten in a hard fought series by the Heat who are led by “Most Dominant Ever” Shaq and a Young DWade who goes nuclear in the playoffs. However cracks begin to show as Ben Wallace gets benched in the 4th quarter during the playoffs which along with other slights leads him to sign with Bulls over the summer.
- Year 4 - (53-29) Lost the Eastern Conference Finals to the Cavaliers - Flip continues to pilot the team well, but replacing Wallace with Chris Webber just isn’t the same as Chris is in the twilight of his career and will play his last season next year. They face Lebron James in the ECF where he has his first national “I’m Him” moment in Game 6. Young me really thought Boobie Gibson was going to be a role player supreme for many years.
- Year 5 - (59-23) Lost the Eastern Conference Finals to the Celtics. Flip and the Pistons last stand, the team continues to struggle finding the 5th starter since losing Ben Wallace, this time starting 33 year old Antonio McDyess (An aside man McDyess was a bad man when he was younger, and has one of my favorite ancient highlight tapes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQC5g7yezgs just straight yammin’ on fools). However, the team lacks the top end talent to compete and falls in 6 to the eventual champion Celtics. Joe Dumars is unable to recreate the magic and lets Flip go at the end of the season saying the team needs a new “Voice”. The Pistons begin the slow descent into irrelevance as they miss the playoffs 12 of the next 15 years.
