Now that 5 is out, what's your favorite Cryptic Collection?
Been loving 5 but I still think 3 is the best, although 4 has the best layout and booklet, it's a shame how simple CC5's booklet it.

2024.05.08 18:56 caterpillar_0o0 I am confused

So,I am a 2nd year csit student (planning to go abroad most likely USA) and now I am confused on what to do.
REscently last dui sem ma padhye anusar I've learned that I liked statistics and I got to know that data science would be great if I have interest in stat so I thought about getting into it without wasting and began with python(just the basics introductory level basics). The flow was great I was on day 70 of code with harry series but then....One day i got really curious and searched about the opportunities of data scientist in Nepal(i went through reddit too). To my horror I got to know that there are little to no internship opportunities in Nepal(if there are tell me more) and I need some real life skill before I go abroad for masters and i stopped with python on day 70(I might be stupid for this should've at least finished).
For some weeks I researched what is best for getting internships in Nepal .Csit ma graduate huna ni chaido raxa intern chai tyo ni ho ani baira janu agadi alikati real life experience ta hunu parxa jasto lagyo malai (correct me if i am wrong). Most answers I got were web d. Therefore I am thinking of learning web d (frontend/backend) at first then I will take some free courses offered by foreign university on data science. My original plan is to go along the flow of academia and finish my maters then hopefully move towards phd too.
Aba kuro k ho vanda aba malai dher dimag divert garnu xaina eauta consistency khojera tyesai ma lagera skill develop ma lagau jasto lagyo 3rd sem ko end ya mid samma ko lagi tyesaile halka k garda hola both ya ko lagi ni uta ko lagi ni useful hune gari suggestions??
Khas ma aele ma 2nd year 1st sem ko end mai xu ani job market saturated vairaxa, harek barxa worldwide dherai graduate niskiraxan... daar lagiraxa tara pani agadi badxu ma sochdai kei garna khojiraxu. Malai chai 3rd year ko mid ya ta third year ko last samma internship pauda ramro hola ki jasto tyesaile aele dekhi aba web d ko lagi prepare garau ki?what do you suggest?
Yo post garna dherai mehenat lagyo hai dai didi senior haru ma ali halka tyesto internet ma active nabasne type ko manxe parye tara ni eso eak palta suggestion leu vanera first time kei post gardai xu reddit ma malai tyesto real life experience tha vayena eso dimag ma j xa tye vandya ho. Malai ya ka teacher haru ni khasai gatilo ta lagdainan tara ni further sem ma gayexi naya teacher vetexi suggestions ni leula aele chai genuine confusion vayo time waste ni dher vayo kei na gari jato lagyo tyesile kei useful suggestion lina khojeko.

2024.03.15 08:48 Cold_Bumblebee_7121 I got my class 9 results today

Yes I'm the one who posted the emotional support post yesterday.
So starting off from yesterday at midnight. Our school suddenly declared in the WhatsApp group that only report cards will be given and copies will not be shown.
Mujhe toh pakka lagta hain ki sabko pass Kara ne ka dhanda hain 👀
Last baar class 8 mein adhe log maths ki wajese fail ho gay.
Subha ai. Main ekdam 6 baje se uthke parne Beth gayi ta ki mummy papa ko thora sa kam gusaa ho ye soch kar ki atleast ab man laga ke par rahi hain 🗿
Mene socha agar sirf report card hi Lena Hain toh mummy ko bhej deti hu usko lene kyunki agar copy nahi denge tab toh teachers ke sath marks ke bare me toh koi puchega bhi nahi. Par mummy ke dusre irado mein main chali gayi khud result lene. Sahi hain agar below 40 sab subject mein aya, toh report card school ke khirki se hi ura dungi 💀
Bohot tension ho Rahi thi. Papa ne isliye bola ki iss bar toh achhe se bohot mahine se nahi para aur tabiyat bhi kharap thi toh utna achha result nahi hoga ye sab jante Hain. Toh tension na leke sirf next exam ki taiyari karna chahiye. Basically he said he's fine with even below 40 as long as I don't fail 🥹
Mummy ne paas se bola ki below 50 agar aya toh pitegi 🥺
So I went to school. Result liya aur Kone pe saas ruki thi.
At last report card ko khola.
In all honesty ? Tabiyat kharap hone ke karan exam ke ek din age pura syllabus ratta Marne ke hisabse above expectations. Overall not that good or satisfactory.
Sab subject me above 60 out of 80 aya but kisi me 70 ke upar nahi aya. Computer me 88 out of 100 Mila. Sir ne sach much maan izzat rakh li yaar 😭 So over all percentage finals mein 89% aya sab semester, practicals milake.
Honestly I personally am actually quite satisfied. Sayad aur zyada achha hota but this is good enough. Mujhe toh abhi bhi biswas nahi hota ki physics aur chemistry mein hagg diya aur fir bhi 65.5 mil gaya. Newton ka strike 2 ho gaya dosto. Uske laws ko kitna disrespect Kiya aur fir bhi marks toh mil gaye. Bina notes ke English literature me 70 aur Bengali mein 65 bhi aa gaya. Maths me 60. Wo toh expect Kiya tha.
Toh Ghar Jake mummy marks dekh kar khush Hui ki 50 ke niche nahi gaya 2nd semester ki tarah. Par fir bhi gussa Hui. Asal mein exam Dene ke baad maine mummy se bola ki achha exam gaya hain. Mummy ne socha ki achha matlab 70 +. Mera achha matlab fail nahi karungi aur 40 ke upar ayega. Toh usko lekar thora data.
Aur baki abhi toh mummy ne na phone liya hain nahi gussa hain.
So I was scared about extreme reactions but it turned out absolutely fine in the end. Ab mujhme iss saal ki taiyari ka josh aa raha Hain aur sirf extreme reactions ke hisabse mere history sir 62.5 ke liya ✨Shick✨Shack✨Shook✨ ho Gaye Hain. Sorry sir par civics mujhe ghanta kuch yaad nahi hain.
So all those of you whose results are yet to be declared. Chill bros. Y'all will hopefully pass with atleast decent numbers like me. Don't be too scared or hard on yourself. Don't be depressed and disappointed. Aj jilo yaar kal rahe ya na rahe ✌🏻

2024.03.08 18:42 Easy-Labyrinths-7845 Analysis of the criticisms on Justice Ganguly's Answer

Aj dekhchi, ei subreddit e oneke Justice Ganguly er Gandhi na Godse prosner uttore khub rag Korche. Kintu amar kacha uni je Uttar diechen ta ekdom jothajotho ebong shotto.
Godse ke chere dilam, he is a murderer so take nie kotha bole shomoe noshto kore labh nei.
But, Is Gandhi also so called " dudh ka dhula hua admi." Jara shikkhito Bangali tara shobhi Jane Gandhir proti Bangalir bidesher karon. Noakhali massacre( by not showing any sympathies to Bengali Hindus, "Telling them to get killed without showing any resistance) theke shuru kore taking away support for Netaji's chairmanship in Congress. After independence (during war with pak) asking Indian govt to pay the agreed upon money back to Pak and doing dharna for that etc etc. Ar Ramchandra Guha r lekha boier Gandhi's Abstinence er Kando ta ar bollami na. And Gandhi was a strict casteist.
So, ha amaro kache oi prosner (Gandhi na Godse) uttor hoche IT'S COMPLICATED. Shohoje bola jabe na. Bhabte hobe.
This is my Freedom of Speech. Thus my opinion. If anyone has any other opinions will love to hear them.

2023.08.14 04:07 stlatos Ancient Sardinians Celtic?

In https://www.academia.edu they give some evidence for the IE nature of the ancient Sardinians (Shardana, in Egyptian sources), known as seafaring raiders, thought to be the people of the Nuragic civilization. This includes Barumini < *bherw- ‘boil / bubble / foam’ (named from the river in the gorge). This resembles Gaulish Borbanus \ Bormanus and similar names at hotsprings (Borvo, Bormo, Bormanus, Borbanus, and maybe Bolvinnus (found at hotsprings in Baugiacus/Bouhy)). Since the evidence shows that the Shardana were raiders who wore kilts, they were Celts. I’m not completely joking. The bronze figures also resemble Celtic art, and the linguistic evidence goes beyond Bormanus (though no other IE has -rm- instead of -rv- here, maybe dissimilation of *b-v (or intermediate *bh = *β would be even closer)).

The name Forco \ Thorco shows interchange of f \ θ. Assuming θ > f would make sense, but not in a Celtic context, which had both θ > f and f > θ. The data shows *p \ *t \ *k > *f \ *θ \ *x with other changes later. This is not innovation in Nur., but common to Celtic (most with θ > t, x > k later in many environments). In *welHant- ‘ruling / leader’ > TA wäl ‘king’, Celtic *wel(l)anf- > Vellaunus (a god), *kaHtu-welHant- ‘warleader’ >> Catuvellauni, Cassivellaunus (a warleader), a change of *nt > wn is clear. The theory that these come from *mn ignores the same optionality in Latin, where most *tn > nd ( *tn > kn in other Italic) but some *tn > *θn > nn \ *fn > mn :

*solw-atnis > L. sollennis / *-fn- > sōlemnis / etc. ‘annual / customary / ceremonial / solemn’, Umbrian sevacni-

With this in mind:

L. porcus ‘pig(let)’, Nur. >> Forco \ Thorco

L. portus ‘port/harbohaven’, Nur. Thárras (port city)

E. ford, Nur. Thorra (at ford on the Torra River)

These 2 places with Th- which would be expected to begin with *p- in IE if named for local features (*prtu-) show the nature of the change clearly (and F\Thorco has no good IE source, if this is ignored). Since -rr- should come from some *-rC-, *-rt- > *-rθ- > -rr- could fit. Optional *fa- > *fo- first fits Irish rounding (*penkWe > *kWo:nkWe > cóic, Patricius : Cothraige), but it is also possible *r > *ër > various V’s. Since *u- > *wu- in Celtic (seen in *w-w > *w-0 in *upo-bherwo- > *wufo-bero- > MIr fobar ‘well’, Gaulish Uobera) before most *wu- > *u-, the Irish change of *w- > f- before this would allow:

*upsVlHo- ‘high’ > G. hupsēlós, Celtic *wufsello- > Gaulish uxello-, *füxsaloi > Sard. Thìscali (mtn.)

This works best if all *u > *ü first (as in Greek). Even *d > *ð > *v > w is possible:

*bando- > OIr benn ‘point/tip/peak’, W. ban ‘height/peak’, Gaulish Cantobennicus, Nur. *banwo- >> Baunéi (mountainous area)

The opposite, *θ > f, also in

*multon- >> French mouton ‘sheep’
*muthlon- > *muflon- > Sard. mufrone \ muvrone \ murvone \ mruvone \ mugrone \ murgone \ murone ‘mouflon / mtn. sheep’

Some names resemble Lusitanian ones (Lusitanian seems close to Celtic and Italic):

Lusitanian Caldo Vledico ‘Hill Town?’, Carla ‘a town’, gen. carlae ‘from a (burial) mound’
*klH2d- > OIr claidaid ‘digs’, MW cladd ‘pit/ditch’, clawd ‘mound/pit/ditch/bulwark’

Nur. *karlis >> L. Caralis, It. Cagliari

which shows that *nd > *nð > *nw but *rd > *rð > *rl (the same range as Greek d \ l \ th).

Gaulish c \ g (OIr claideb sword’, *gl- >> L. gladius; *kleus-ya: > L. glōria ‘glory/fame/praise/honor’) might be seen in:

*g^hel- ‘yellow’ >> Sard. crialléi \ chirièlle \ ghirièlle ‘wild chrysanthemem’

Sar. golléi ‘mtn./hills’ (which might be related to L. collis or OIr Cúailnge < *kowlangyo- (likely related anyway if < *kolHmon-, etc.))

Most importantly, if *sk > *sx > *sR and *kk > *xx > *RR, it allows some very unexpected correspondences:

*skuta: > OIr scoth ‘point/edge of blade’, >> L. Scoti \ Scotti ‘Gaels’, *sxoda: > *sRada: > Shardana
(compare *u-a > *o-a (and often > a later) in Irish with *u-a: > a-a here (stages not certain, maybe *U > *O > a)

*k(e\a)nukon- > *knukno- > *knukko- > OIr cnocc ‘lump/hill/mound’, MW cnwch, TA kñuk ‘neck’, *xnuxxa: > Sard. nurra ‘heap of stones’

*k(e\a)nukon- > *knekno- > MBret. qnech, Gmc. *kneggo- > OE hnecca ‘neck’

*k(e\a)nukon- > *knakno- > Gmc. *knaggo- > OHG hnac ‘back/top’

These stages are needed to explain all alternation. TA shows *n-n > *ñ-n > TA kñuk before *kn > *kk (no other way to get there, since *u did not cause palatalization of ñ https://www.academia.edu/105497939/Dissimilation_n_n_n_n_and_m_m_n_m_in_Tocharian ). These changes have not been seen because others did not see the context, the importance of *f > th in finding appropriate etymologies, etc.

2023.08.11 21:57 stlatos PIE *weybh- \ *wyebh-

The range of meanings in PIE *sweip- > Germanic *swi:b- > OE swífan ‘move/sweep/revolve’, E. swive ‘fuck / cut a crop in a sweeping manner’ seems to show a change from ‘(make) move/shake/turn’ > ‘fuck’ / ‘be fucked’. The exact same range in Iranian *vaip- ‘move in a sweeping manner / have homosexual sex’ (Avestan vaēp-, MP viftag ‘catamite / passive homosexual’, Khw. wib- ‘turn round a team of bullocks while threshing’). Comparing only these might cause one to see PIE *(s)weip- ‘move/shake/turn/sweep/revolve’ with s-mobile, but I think this *(s)- often has another explanation, like many C’s that seem to change or appear from nowhere.
There are further oddities in groups with the same range of meanings:
*weib(h)- > L. vībex ‘mark from being hit/whipped?’, vībrāre ‘set to vibrating / agitate / shake / brandish / move quickly to and fro / throw / launch’
*weip- > Iranian *vaip-, Av. vifra- / ōifra- ‘shaking?, tossed in the waters?’, Skt. vípra- ‘stirred? / inwardly excited / inspired’
*sweip- > Germanic *swi:b- > OE swífan ‘move/sweep/revolve’, E. swive ‘fuck / cut a crop in a sweeping manner’
*sweib- > ON svipa ‘swoop/move quickly/whip’, E. swift, OHG sweifan ‘swing/set in turning motion/wriggle’
*Ksweib- > OCS ošibati ‘turn away from’, R. šibkij ‘swift’, Av. xšviwi-vāza- ‘going swiftly’
*Ksweip- > Sog. xwšyp ‘whip’, Skt. kṣip- ‘throw’, kṣipra- ‘swift / elastic (of a bow)’
*KweiP-? > E. whip, MDu. wippen ‘move quickly’, Sw. vippa ‘shake’

It is impossible to unite all these regularly. Previous explanations of contamination of 2 (or many more) roots seem to lack context of the many IE words that show changes of voicing, s vs. 0, etc., making optional changes likely in many such roots. This includes *mel(t\d\dh)- ‘ask/pray / vow/recite/tell’, dhub(h)- ‘deep’, *bhud(h)- ‘bottom’, *b(h)u- ‘swell’, *serp\b\bh- ‘slurp’, *seip\b\bh- ‘drip/oil/soap/sift’, *sleip\b\bh- ‘slip/oil’ https://www.reddit.com/language/comments/1267b1x/lick_kiss_slurp/ and a huge number of changes to K https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/13x1295/pie_and_armenian_k/ . Many IE roots with the cluster *ksw- reconstructed show similar alternation (*kswizd- > Skt. kṣviḍ-, L. sībilus ‘whistling/hissing’, W. chwythu, G. sízō, OE hwistlian ‘whistle/hiss’, *sweist- > OCS svistati ‘hiss’, *? > Alb. fishkëllej, *gweizd(h)- > OCS zvizdati ‘whistl’, Po. gwizd-, etc.) making either some other cluster or opt. changes needed. The matches in derivatives like L. vībrāre, Av. vifra- / ōifra- ‘shaking?’, Skt. vípra- ‘stirred? / inspired’, kṣipra- ‘swift / elastic (of a bow)’, Av. xšviwra-, xšviwi-vāza- ‘going swiftly’ seem to show these roots were not separate in PIE, only later sound changes created variation.

Also, if *weiP- can mean ‘fuck’ in several branches, the connection that has been proposed before for *wi:ba-m > E. wife, *Kwi:po- > TA kip, TB kwīpe ‘shame/modesty’, kwipe-ike ‘penis’ might be further supported. *w > kw is clear in Skt. Vīrabhadra- ‘name of a gandharva’ > TB Kwirapabhadra and likely in a few more https://www.reddit.com/usestlatos/comments/148o12s/tocharian_w_kw/ . PIE *w- here would explain why no palatalization of *K- took place, a problem for this relation that Adams mentioned. If *weibh- > L. vībrāre did also meant ‘fuck’ in these branches, the creation of *weibho-m ‘that which is fucked’ > ‘woman’ or ‘vagina’ would fit the path needed in this proposal. It also would help explain why a neuter noun was the main word for ‘woman’ (though this exact path is not needed a priori).

Since *weibh- ‘fuck’ would be equivalent to *weybh- in most descriptions of PIE, the possibility that *H3yebh- ‘fuck’ was really *wyebh- with metathesis seems strong to me (Skt. yabh-, G. oíphō). No other word began with *wy-, so its outcomes would only be clear if seen here, and the change of *wy- > *γWy- would also fit my H3 = xW (or voiced). Since this same root might show *w- > *xW- > kw- in Tocharian, the same in Iran. would be no more difficult. Indeed, *γa(v)y- > Pashto γāy-, Shu. γāv- might have instead come from *γvayv- with metathesis and dissimilation. Older *γyav- > Ks. žá.w- might also explain the retroflex V (caused by K as in RUKI?, no other ex.?).

In *wyebh- > G. oíphō the existence of w > o in what would be the same root (*weip- > Iranian *vaip-, Av. vifra- / ōifra-, Skt. vípra-) makes the same in G. likely (o vs. ō was likely a matter of O vs. o at the time, not length (or not merely so)). Also compare *windho-s > MIr find ‘a hair’, *winthos > *óinthos > G. íonthos ‘young hair’. The change in the 0-grade *wibh- > G. oíphō might seem an odd environment, but the same in Av. vifra- / ōifra- and Ku. withǝu > withu / oithǝu ‘slippery’ (and even more odd in PIE *gWhermo- > Skt. gharmá-, Av. garǝma-, *ghǝrǝm > *ghǝrǝw > ghǝrǝo / ghǝrun ‘hot’) should be compelling support.

For TB kwīpe ‘shame/modesty’ the meaning ‘turn (away) / look away’ (in awe / shame / etc.) could instead unite the meanings given above for ošibati ‘turn away from’ from *ksw-, if *ksw- > *kw- in Tocharian, but I feel these roots are all related by optional changes, so such fine matching doesn’t seem needed.

2023.07.11 22:07 stlatos PIE *pettur \ *petturo- ‘bird / wing / feather’, Tocharian and the comparative method

Many IE words for ‘bird / wing / feather’ come from *pettur or *petturo-, often with unique changes. Since Arm. p’etur ‘feather’ shows odd ph- and -t- and Skt. pátatra- ‘wing/feather’, pátra- / páttra-, have 2 t’s, older *pteturo- with pt- explaining retained p- (later p- > f- > ph- like *pstr-? > pHṛngam ‘sneeze’), then metathesis > *petturo- (as in Skt.?) to explain tt > t (optional, see *wid-ti- > *witti > Arm. giwt -i- ‘finding / invention’, git -i- ‘finding / gift’) would work. This requires t-t > 0-t in most other IE languages. However, Tocharian might give more evidence:

In pl. *pärw-a: > TB paruwa ‘feathers’, something obviously caused t > 0 (no evidence for << *per-, unlike Adams). A singular *päru could come from *pedur (since *-ur > *-ru and *dr > *r are regular). However, most d > dz > ts. Since tt > st in most IE, *pettur merging with *pedur would show that the loss of d happened after d > dz. A stage with dz as the only affricate and no z phoneme is likely, so optional dz > z could explain many dual outcomes of *d in Tocharian (*pedā > TA päts, TB patsa ‘bottom’ vs. *wed- > we- ‘speak’ ). This would make it *pettur > *pettru > *pestru > *petsru > *pedzru > *pezru > *peru > *pYäru > pl. *pärw-a: > TB paruwa. These intermediate stages for *d also link changes in Tocharian (all known to be irregular or optional, I remind you) to changes to *d in other IE. Some of these have been seen but not categorized, like optional ð > z in Av. (and I’d add *xwarza- > Os. xwarz ‘good’, Av. xVarǝzišta- ‘sweetest’ < *swald- ( *xwałtür > Arm. k`ałc`r ‘sweet’ ); Av. zaxšaθra- ‘denigating speech / blasphemy’ < *dus-waxWθra- ‘bad dispute, bad-mouth(ing)’ ), or just ignored, like *d > *d / *dz > t / ts = c in Arm. This also includes d merging with s optionally in Alb.(*sweidro- / *swǝidro- ‘sweat’ > Lt. sviêdri, G. hīdrṓs, Arm. k’irtn, *swǝizro- > *swi:rso- > Alb. dirsë / djersë; *b(h)laido- ‘pallid/ill/old/bent’ > Slavic *ble:do-, Alb. *blaisuro- > blehurë ‘pale’). The same in Indic would allow *dr > *zr > r in *swǝidro- > *sxWi:zro- > Skt. kṣīrá-m ‘milk’, NP šīrīn ( > Kh. sirín ‘sweet’ ) https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/14pq6mq/no_sweat_the_complaining_cow_and_the_nervous/ , which would obviously help in proving this change if it occurred in the same root across several IE branches. By ignoring evidence of a change you lose all possibility of finding its cause, and thus learning about similar changes in other IE, even if they look unrelated at first sight.

Looking for cognates and finding sound changes that explain their differences is a necessary part of the comparative method. Making up connections like *per- to “explain” a word obviously related to IE with pter-, petr-, etc., does not help gain knowledge, only to fit words into an arbitrary system by moving letters around on paper. In this way, TB mrausk- ‘feel an indifference/aversion to the world’, would be forever alone, with no possible IE source, since no other root contained *mraw-. With the comparative method as it should be, Armenian amač`em ‘feel inferior, be ashamed’ would be an obvious choice for a cognate. Trying to find a common source and seeing if the needed sound changes can be found elsewhere leads to new knowledge: if from n-bhaH2sk^e- ‘not speak / not boast’ > *ëmbhaXsk^e/o- > *ämwarsk- > TB mrausk- https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/13zqbv1/fortunatovs_law_in_context/ then it would fit other ex. of bh > w (*stembha:- > TB śāmpa ‘haughtiness/conceit’, *stembhno- > *stenvno- > *stervno- > TB śarware ‘arrogant/haughty’) and the general alternation of p \ w (*tri:b- > TA tattripu, TB tetriwu- ‘mixed’; *pw > pp in verbs *dap-w- > TB tāpp- ‘eat’; *trap-w- > trāpp- ‘trip/stumble’). Even H2 = X > R > r has other ev.: *(s)pexk^- ‘look at’ >> L. speciō, [*ē] OHG spāhi ‘wise’, Av. spaxšti- ‘vision’, *poxk^ontrV > TB perkentär ‘they looked’. Connecting this to G. spérkhomai ‘hasten / be eagevehement’, Skt. spṛháyati ‘desire’ just because they look the same but mean different things, as some linguists do, not only makes no sense but can never find the sound changes or the mutual evidence these languages give about the existence of *x and the change of *x > r and *r > *x > 0 in other IE https://www.reddit.com/etymology/comments/zkgi2m/latin_pr%C4%93x_request_armenian_a%C5%82ersank_a%C5%82a%C4%8Dank/

2023.07.10 22:47 stlatos Out of ‘One’, Many

PIE fem. nouns added H2 ( = x or X ); IE ī-stems have nom. in -ī or -īs. I think this is analogy after *-iXs > *-i:X (like *-ons > *-o:n ), creating optional *-i:Xs. This explains why both -s and -0 exist, and why *-i:Xs > *-i:ks > -īx in Latin, etc. More ev. for -s and -0 existing here at the same time comes from fem. *sm-i:X(s) ‘1’ > G. mía, Arm. mi \ mu, *smya(s) > *sǝmña(s) > TA säṃ, TB sana(i) (in which *smya(s) > *sǝmña(s) undergoing changes that turn *my to n (not *my, *ñy, *ñ, etc.) with other effects (like schwa-insertion in CCC) is reasonably taken as *my > *mñ after C, later simplifying the (now) unique cluster). This allows a stage with nom. m. *sYEms and fem. *sǝmña(s) which did not fit into any other class, creating a new stem for each like normal o- and a:-stems. Thus, *sYEms > TB ṣem, *sYEm-o- > TB ṣeme-, but fem. *sǝmña(s), *sǝm-a: in the rest of the paradigm (acc. *sǝm-a:-m > TB somo ). These *sYEm-o- vs fem. *sǝm-a: would match the first syllable in each, since the relation between *sǝmña(s) and m. *sYEm- would not be clear at the time. The mark of the fem. would appear to be *(Y)E > *ǝ and added *-ñas in the nom., so this *sǝm- was extracted just like *sYEm- from *sYEm-s. In the same way, the TA vs. TB forms are odd, but show sound changes from the same original, not complicated analogy (unlike Winter, Adams). Knowing they have the same source allows the sound laws that created surface variation to be found; this is the basis of the comparative method.

In *welHant-s > *welxans > *wYǝlans > TA wlā(ṃ)-ñkät, TB ylai-ñäkte ‘Indra’ the change *-ns > -ṃ / -i parallels *sǝmña(s) > TA säṃ, TB sana(i). This is likely original, since it occurs in 2 archaic words, one preserving the original nom. in ‘king god’ > ‘Indra’. Just as IE had -s \ -0 in fem. *sm-i:X(s) ‘1’, TB had -i \ -0, showing its origin. Other words, if they took place in this, might have undergone analogy from non-nom. forms. The shared feature in both these is loss of one nasal in TB: *-ans > *-ãs > -ai in *welxans > *wYǝlãs > ylai- and *sǝmña(s) > *sǝnña(s) > *sǝnã(s) > sana(i). The fact that ī-stems have nom. in -ī or -īs and TB shows -a or -ai (after *iX > *ya ) makes it likely *-s > *-y is the cause. That it only happened after nasal V’s shows that -ãs > -ãs~ > -ãy~ (since other ev. for y = y~ exists: *yugo- > *y~ug > muk https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/14dmxon/tocharian_xyz/ ). More ev. for IE s~ in essentially the same environment in https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/14gcf31/the_sound_change_no_one_believed_in/ .

This would also allow a source for -ṃ in *eti-neH > *et(i)-nãx~ > TA ontaṃ , TB nta (intensifying particle, usually in negative clauses). If *-n > *-y in TA, it can’t be from *-n, and no nasal would disappear in TB. In https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/14dmxon/tocharian_xyz/ ev. for PIE *H as x > 0 \ k in Toch. exists; the same sound optionally remaining as *-x, only seen when nasalized, makes sense. It is likely that Toch. had all NV > NV~ at one time, later V~ > V. However, there was no V~ > V when the source of nasalization disappeared from next to V~ (either N > 0 or metathesis). Then, final fricatives (-x and -s ) disappeared in multisyllabic words, remaining ones > +nasal after V~ (with different outcomes in TA and TB). This would show *-s~ > *-y~ > -i in TB, *-s~ > -0 in TA (so not from *-n in either, which would have different outcomes; no reason to assume *-n in the source of TA säṃ, TB sana(i) at all, or that these come from 2 different forms (like Adams)). Though odd, there is no other way to explain and unite these oddities. Also, since all these changes happened after *a, it is possible that before fricatives > +nasal a system of only nasal i \ a \ u existed (simplified as in many languages); this would help in analogy eliminating many *-ã(C) for words with stems *-on(C)-, etc., since there would be no nasal *-õ that could take its place, only *-o, etc.

For *welHant-s > TA wlā(ṃ)- TB ylai-, in https://www.academia.edu/428981 Alexander Lubotsky assumed that the nom. was *-a:n, but for *-onts > *-o:n only G. provides good ev., and there was too much analogical mix of -on- and -ont- there for me to consider it reliable. He assumed TA *-n > *-y also existed in TB, but only after *a. This is unlikely, and looking at other IE languages provides a better understanding of these changes. Dardic seems to have optional *n > *y~ and *r > *y after long V :

E. mother, Skt. mātár-, *madārǝ > *muðāri \ *muðāyi > Gultari mulaayi- ‘woman’, Gurezi maai / maa ‘mother’, pl. malaari, Dras mulʌ´i ‘daughter’

E. sister, Skt. svásar-, *ǝsvasārǝ > *išpušāri > Kh. ispusáar, Ka. íšpó, Dm. pas, pl. pasari

*k^un- > *k^uṇ- > Sh. šuŋ ‘dog’, Ni. tsu~

(if RUKI caused retro. above, analogy > ) *k^uṇo:ṇ > *k^oṛo:ṇ > *šoṛa:ŋ > *šoṛã: > Ks. šó.~a ‘dog’, Lv. sola-v; *šoṛa:ŋ > *šoŋa:ṛ-ikā > D. šongaṭék ‘female dog/pup’

*k^oṛo:ṇ > *šoṛu:ŋ > D. šoṛíing (with *u: > *ü: > i: )

*k^oṛu:ŋ > *xörü:n > *Erîn > *rÊni > Kh. rèni \ réeni ‘dog’

The cause seems to be the existence of y > y~ and w > v~; with these “weakened” nasal sounds available, -n > -y~ and -m > -v~ were possible. Seeing the loss of -r and -n \ -m in Indic (and other IE) as related only makes sense; there is no reason to think that PIE had nom. *-o: for on-stems, etc. I think other closely related languages showed similar changes, many likely optional, for *-r and *-n.

Since ā > ō and a > o might be opt. next to P https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/14f147m/ten_tocharian_troubles_2/ a loan with -m- likely shows this also if Skt. samá- ‘even/level/same/like’ >> TB sām, TA [with *a > *o by P] sam.
