2024.04.22 19:07 lets-get-it-1 People really out here jumping out the window off one DJ Premier song after they made plenty of classics together?

Nothing Hit-Boy has ever made has topped 'Nas is Like' or 'NYSOM I/II', where DJ Premier is always compared to his past work just like Nas is always compared to Illmatic. People need to let it go and have them come out with new work instead of coming out with all this immediate judgement. Your squabbling is just fans running in place with nowhere to go but to wait for how the album sounds like.
That's like trying to stop Hit-Boy from producing for Nas after they made 'Black Girl Lost 2' and 'Royalty/No Such Thing as Black Jesus' together in 2012, and those songs are always dissed by fans and are suspiciously uncredited by Hit to even have claimed that he made those beats paired with some jarring chorus. If reddit was around before any Nas album roll out, y'all pitchforking would stall everything when Nas is just trying push the needle and striving to sound different artistically while taking chances.
What happened to being an maverick artist, not hopping on trends, and not caring about public perception? Y'all fake stans don't even give your savior any breathing room to experiment and try something different but just smother him with the same nagging broken record superficial complaints, which is probably why some rappers don't even drop music anymore because they can't take the critiques or live up/outdo their past numbers and expectations.
This immediate popcorn reaction is so dumb and youtube commentators/critics are to blame, trying to monetize or game the audience into drone-like echo chamber behavior -- They diss something the minute it comes out as a hot take just to get clickbait views of people complaining in the comments. Similar with 'Scatt Attack' for LT2, Nas even defended 'Al Jarreau of Rap' on the lyrics of his latest music video 'I Love This Feeling'...do you guys just gloss through music for the beats and not listen to the words? What's this infatuation with good beats anyways if the message is crisp? Y'all beat driven audiophiles need to stan someone else because people have been listening to non-CDQ 'Deja Vu' and unreleased joints for years and not because of no beat, but the lyrics, check his lyrics of 'Simple Things' https://genius.com/14789473. Go donate your floppy discs to DJ Premier to sample on his MPC if you really care, because he probably didn't think to save his best beats for Nas after all these years to think the Nas-Premier album is ever going to happen.
How many times has Fantano (or even The Source) been wrong for whoever he's critiquing just to revise it years later on a whimper? Who fucking cares what the next person thinks just to alter their opinion to yours or vice versa? Why does everyone have to come to a consensus or endlessly rant about this? This ain't no cult -- It's literally having a parasocial relationship with someone who you don't even know on the internet just to chase down, predict, or call out who's right as if this was some sports gambling app, but there's no scorebook because opinions are all subjective and subject to change over time and there is no standard for the right answer, so who cares?
Nas already said on record that he doesn't work for his fans, go listen to 'TSK' because he already said he wants to punch some of y'all in the face for violating. If you don't like what Nas is doing, flake off like the causal fans after Street's Disciple, we don't need you, unsub. I've already said this is a litmus test for Nas to just keep his core fans, because he usually gets uncomfortable after accumulating too many accolades/fans, where he just wants a fresh restart with his braided hair and to purge the rest from even being connected to or concerned about his actions https://www.reddit.com/nas/comments/1c7qbfq/prediction_the_new_premier_album_is_nas_purging/ He has his virgo tendencies, read his astrology chart if you don't understand.
Nas does not champion your thoughts or waiver his art, he just does what he wants or feels what is right. Nas is back with DJ Premier and rapping like Nasty Nas and y'all should be grateful because he could have retired off investments since 2014. If not, find someone else to champion and go listen to some new music because some of y'all don't even dig for new artists outside of being force fed youtube's recommendations mix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OMirbGvn8o or cling on to just the recent rap beefs. Check https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/top100 because it doesn't have opinionated harassment as commentary at the bottom of every song calling you out on how you should feel about it, but instead leave it blank for you to organically form your own interpretations instead of being a conformist trying to 'fit in' to what everyone else is saying. Get off this reddit echo chamber of it just regurgitating what you're already subscribed to and venture off into something less familiar. Stop festering around the Nas sub looking for some grassroots movement just to support your interest group's opinion. No one cares and Nas isn't the artist for you to live out your dreams through channeling his actions; live your own life or stan someone else.

Reveal Weekend: April 12th-14th

Intro

Now, to immediately address the elephant in the title: yes, you can argue that "golden age" is a bit of a misnomer for this period of electronic music as a whole. With its rich history of styles and its global origins (famously: house in Chicago, techno in Germany), what you would call the "golden age" of electronic music does depend on who you ask. However, it is incredibly hard to argue that the more club-oriented style of electronic music (from here on out, dance music) did not reach a commercial peak around the world in the early to mid 2010s.
And looking at what happened during that era, how could it not have? The rising access to technology and the internet played massive roles in this rise. As personal computers became more common amongst households, so did the access to digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as FL Studio and Logic Pro (my personal DAW of choice). And with YouTube tutorials to learn how to produce, it became easier than ever to make your own remixes and original music. As well, SoundCloud became the #1 source for crate-digging new music from rising talent across genres, and dance music was one of its big benefactors. With the ability to upload any music you wish for free, many artists got their start uploading remixes and original music to carve out their own artistic vision and sound. The site began to receive more traffic, more ears started to hear dance music, and attention rose as the sonic palette of the genre expanded.
However, with that attention came lots of scrutiny: many decried the genre as "talentless" and "without soul", often citing the lack of formal musical training as reasons to ignore the genre. As well, since dance music came from the clubs where the main avenue of performance was playing music out on the decks, opponents to the genre said it was "as easy as pressing play" and anyone could do it. (As if anybody being able to DJ is a bad thing? Overall, this was quite a silly set of arguments, but they held a lot of weight a decade back!)
Yet with dance music hitting the mainstream charts in big ways – from the fascination around dubstep, the era of Avicii-, Calvin Harris- and Swedish House Mafia-style progressive house dominating the radio, to the Spinnin' Records-driven domination of big room house taking over the festival scene, to its near-exclusive use in YouTube intros and early 2010s memes – it was impossible to ignore dance music anymore.
Plus, with the wide variety of sounds and styles to choose from, dance music offered something for everyone. Just looking at the rate artists, you can hear everything from the dominant sound of progressive house (Avicii, Calvin Harris, and Zedd) to the rising electronic trap beats (Baauer, DJ Snake, and Jack Ü) to the SoundCloud-era wonky-sounding shit (Flume and Louis The Child) to big room house (DVBBS, Firebeatz, and Martin Garrix) to the quickly-dominant tropical house (Kygo, Robin Schulz, and Snakehips) to the ever-famous dubstep (Knife Party and Skrillex) to the club-ready hits (Martin Solveig, Steve Aoki, and Tiësto) to
..you get the picture.
Anyways, that's enough reminiscing. Let's hit the clubs, get trashed, and have fun!

There’s no bonus rate for this one. Sorry to any bonus rate truthers.

Rules

These are definitely not copy-pasted from the Tiktok Rate I hosted and are clearly originally written with this rate in mind:
  • Listen to every song listed and give it a score between one (1) and ten (10). Decimal points are allowed, but only to one place (ex. 7.1 is acceptable, but not 7.15). I do not give a shit what you give the songs as long as it is between those two numbers.
  • You have to rate every single song. If you skip any and do not give me a score when I ask you for one, your ballot will not be counted. This is because the program used to determine the results will break if scores are not successfully put in and I will cry if the program breaks because it will be a pain in the ass to do this manually and my life is already difficult enough.
  • You may give one song a zero (0) and one song an eleven (11). These should be reserved for your favorite track and least favorite track. If you do use either your zero (0) or your eleven (11), you are encouraged to leave a comment on the track. It can be as short or as long as you want, but please leave one; it will help the sub understand if you should be canceled or not when the rate is being revealed.
  • Please use the prepared link to submit your scores! That is the only form of ballot I will accept. I spent a lot of time and effort on it, so please use it.
    • Note: if you’re trying to access on a mobile device or on the new reddit layout, it may not work; I have made it so the link will take you to old.reddit.com, so you should use a computer to send in your scores (if possible)!
  • If you desire to change any of the scores after you have already submitted them, simply message me and I will be glad to help! My life is a chaotic mess right now, but I at least have rates as a welcome escape.
  • Your scores should not be considered confidential! Don’t be scared to share them. Go nuts. Campaign for whatever song you gave an eleven to. Or not. This whole thing really is not that deep.

Commenting Guideline

It is also highly encouraged that you add a comment to your song ratings! Do this by adding a space after the score and then typing to your heart’s desire, like this:
Summer: 10 whenimechainthesuma tumajarbisaun
Any format other than this is NOT good and you will deeply hurt me if you do not follow the example given here. This includes:
Faded: 5: okay which fucking one do you mean
Bubble Butt: is what I got! 10
Where Are Ü Now: I will give this an 8 because it peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Bangarang: 10 - When I was younger, my parish priest tried to exorcise me for listening to this song before bible study. It didn't work bc I'm still gay and emo
Wasted: (10) One time I was trying to get with this closeted frat bro and he said this song was a banger and I agreed (this time for real) and kept complimenting his music taste and hitting on him but he got too drunk and then was too embarrassed to talk to me again and that's not even the most embarrassing thing I've done for a man that relates to a song in this rate. What's MORE embarrassing is that I copy-pasted this comment from the TikTok Rate comment examples and I changed really only the song title for which song it related to because I have a pathetic track record when it comes to men

Links

And with that, here is every link you need for the rate!

This rate is due April 5th and the reveal weekend is April 12th-14th!

Cannot wait to see everyone's scores! As always, if there is ever a question, DM me here on reddit and I will get to it as soon as I see it. :)

2024.02.25 22:22 ExternalRise3840 For the fourth time, I’ve updated my ideas for if MM had more content. Not sure when my brain will stop coming up with ideas lol.

Before anything, I need to say, I know this is really unrealistic, I just wanted to share my ideas in case anyone ever wants to use them.
Main Story:
Irregularity Isle:
Woodland of Lies: (Thalassophobia and Apparition are moved to a new world)
Canon Cave (NEW):
Modded Mountain (NEW):
Content Cosmos
Hellish Heights:
Personalized Palace (NEW, though kind of just a renamed Classified Castle):
All Stars and Unbeatable remain the same (though All-Stars now has a good ending mix if you press space at the exact time the spike should appear, though I’m not sure what the ending would be like).
Bonus
Also, just for the heck of it, imma list some ideas for alternate song names for the song ideas here:

2023.12.03 02:22 vintage-red [1996-06-29] TUPAC INTERVIEW IN ITALY WITH PAOLA ZUKAR OF “AELLE RAP MAGAZINE”

[1996-06-29] TUPAC INTERVIEW IN ITALY WITH PAOLA ZUKAR OF “AELLE RAP MAGAZINE”
On June 29, 1996, Paola Zukar of “Aelle Rap Magazine” interviewed Tupac in his hotel room at the five-star Principe Savoia.
Link to Interview : https://almagazine.it/rap-americano/tupac-shakur-ambizioni-di-un-giocatore/
Link to recent YouTube interview with Paola Zukar 'My Meeting with Tupac!' (set captions to ON > change language to english) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AJHA7B9I98

Interview translated in English:
As your first time in Italy, I’d say you’re not doing too bad-you’re jumping from party to party, from fashion designer to fashion designer, are you really enjoying this kind of life?
“Eh yes, I’m having a great time here, I’m being spoiled.”
First of all, I’d like to know a little bit about the huge changes involving Death Row, because I think your label has always been more than an office and a production studio for you
“You want to know what’s going to change after — after — Dre’s departure? Oh, there’s no problem, we’re up to five million copies sold, you know? We do what we’re supposed to do, we don’t stop.”
And you now also participate in executive work with Suge?
“I have been collaborating on a managerial level since day one. I have always done that. I have never been a disciple, but a leader.”
Would you like to change anything within Death Row?
“I would say no. Why change anything if as we are we have unparalleled success? We are the most successful black firm in our country and perhaps in the world. Why fix it if it’s not broken? Right?
Right. One of the things that is definitely most striking about your appearance is the way you have painted your body; the tattoos make you look more like a book than a man. The images, the words, the symbols you wear on your body you also gladly put them up: on the cover of your latest CD, you can be seen in 360 degrees… Maybe some of the things you have written permanently, like ‘outlaw,’ will change as time goes by
“When I’m 99 years old and sitting somewhere with a group of 99-year-olds, I want to have outlaw still tattooed on my arm, because then I’ll know how I’ve lived until then. All the people who reject tattoos want to get away from their memories. Memories are nothing but permanent tattoos printed in the brain. It doesn’t matter how much you smoke, how much you drink or what you do with your life — your memories will stay there, forever. People today are becoming so cold, they forget everything too easily, but I want to remember everything, my tattoos will always be on my skin: I want to remember every battle, every wound, every revolver shot, every pleasant moment, every unpleasant moment, every smile and every tear. That’s what each of these tattoos represents.”
One of the best videos of recent times was your “Temptations,” the video in which Coolio and Ice T are two doormen in a hotel where dozens of rappers from across America give their definition of “temptation” … you were still in prison at the time, so you are not present in any scene. Did you still have a chance to take part in the project?
“Sure. I wrote the story. While I was in jail.”
There were dozens of artists in that video, from Salt ‘n Pepa to Warren G, from Isaac Hayes to Treach of Naughty By Nature; on your latest work, also there are something like twenty guests, twenty rappers who bring their style from all over the United States and show their affection for you, on the first album you release after your prison years. There’s Method Man, Snoop, Dramacydal, Redman, and others-it’s not easy to see something like that….
“It’s part of my military state of mind. I like to have allies; allies are important to win wars, to make a government work, to form a corporation. To keep a business going, you need allies, not friends. You see, friends come and go, while allies help you achieve a common purpose. The difference between success and failure? A good ally. Throughout my career I have tried to do favors for those who worked with me, and in the last twenty months, my turn has come. Now it’s my turn to collect favors, and it was like a power show. I showed my power.”
What kind of characteristics does someone have to have to be your loyal ally?
“My enemies are your enemies, I’m on your side, you’re on mine, my fight is your fight. Allies are better than friends.”
In fact, “Me Against The World” also represented this principle a bit, didn’t it? I mean, with “All Eyez On Me,” the concept is definitely reiterated….
“‘Me Against The World’ was a perfect title! Perfect! The titles of my albums show exactly what happens to me at any given time, the difficulties and joys I go through. In fact, they are more like prophecies than titles; I wrote ‘Me Against The World’ two years before I was shot, before I went to jail, and my lyrics said exactly that I was going to jail and that someone wanted me dead. I wrote “All Eyez On Me” as soon as I got out of jail and I was really talking about the success I was going to have and the boundaries I was going to cross. My albums are written for the future, they are plans, projects, and the titles represent what will happen to me in the future. In fact, look now-I have ‘all eyes on me,’ even in Italy. Five million copies sold, I’ve sold more albums than anyone on Death Row, I released the most successful and best-selling double rap CD, you know? ‘All eyes on me’… When I want someone to buy my album, I want people to feel inside where I’m coming from and I also want the title of my work, to represent precisely those feelings, I wouldn’t want it to be something like… ‘Tupac!’ or ‘Three’…
This, however, is the positive side of having all eyes on you, I mean aside from the millions of copies sold and the fans, there are others who are intent on keeping a close eye on you and never giving up on you. The media, the critics, and even the police, the judiciary, the enemies–do you really feel the constant presence of these stares?
“Yes, because I’m a fun guy to watch. (Laughs). The good part is that I can brag a lot, I can get excited about all the things I’ve done, the albums I’ve sold, etc., but the bad part is that I carry the marks of every struggle I’ve had to go through to get here, a mark for every door I’ve had to break through, for every mark I carry a scar. You know, there’s also a lot of pain.”
Are you afraid of changing as you go on in years? Are you afraid that your fans will no longer recognize themselves in you if you change your style?
“I feel untouchable. I feel that my fans could never dictate what kind of style to follow, they can’t really tell me how I should be. Black people can’t tell me what I’m like, rap listeners can’t tell me what I’m like…I don’t feel like I can go as far as saying, like Krs-One, ‘I’m Hip Hop,’ but certainly no one in Hip Hop can tell me what Hip Hop is; if I sell five million copies and the others put together can’t even touch me, no one can tell me a [bleep] about what Hip Hop should be. That’s why when Hammer sold nine million records, he was the best rapper in the world, nobody could tell him a bleep; in this world it’s the numbers that decide, in an imaginary world where you are all friends and play together in the neighborhood is another thing, but in the real world the foundation is: “money”! Money is power, if we want to be men of power, if we want to have economic freedom, if we don’t want to be slaves, money represents power. So the king is the person who sells the most records of all-I sell five million records? This is Hip Hop. Because Hip Hop should be something that reaches every person in every corner of the world, right? So, my stuff makes everyone buy my record, that’s Hip Hop, how can it be anything else?
Speaking of ‘power,’ it seems to me that you have been accumulating a lot of it lately, and it also shows in the people you hang out with: Mike Tyson is the sportsman who earns more than anyone else in the world, it seems to me, and I’ve seen that you hang around with him a lot and…
“No, we hang around together, I don’t hang around with anybody.”
In the sense that you are still often seen together, you and Iron Mike and Suge Knight. And all the economic power that surrounds you, you don’t hide it at all. Now, since one of the hardest things to do, when you accumulate a lot of money and power, is to maintain it, how do you plan to approach the future? With what intentions?
“Anyone who wishes to have power needs to study it. That’s what I did and still do, I study. I study power, because I know that tomorrow it might be gone. But if I really lost it, my records would speak for themselves, they would still speak. I’ve been through times that no one has ever even touched, unimaginable difficulties … I know it could be over tomorrow for me, but this is fun, it’s just fun for me; I’m the kind of person who loves to live, and no matter how long it lasts, life will always be beautiful for me.”
On your latest work you have 27 tracks, where did you take the time to write?
“I wrote them all in the recording studio, writing three a day. I love producers who have a fever for basics, who never stop to give me new bases, I listen to them, think of a probable song, throw down some rhymes, write a freestyle, go to the second verse and start rapping, if I like it I go on like that and build the chorus, then I go to lib and close. Then, I sit down, listen to it, smoke a little, have a drink, have someone else listen to it with me, and if there’s something to change I work on it again, otherwise I move on to another song. And so on.”
One of your most beautiful songs ever is “Only God Can Judge Me” (‘Only God Can Judge Me’)…
“I wrote part of ‘Only God Can Judge Me’ in prison. I only wrote the words, I wrote them while listening to Eric Clapton’s version of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”; I wanted this song to sound just like “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” you know? In jail you can’t borrow rap music tapes and so I was taking what I could, what they had there. So I listened to what the song really meant to me: ‘take this gun, I can’t shoot anymore, I’m tired,’ the man didn’t even care that God was watching him, he was saying things the way he really felt. At that moment, was there anyone who could judge him but God? And that is the truth! That’s why I am so sassy, because I know that no one can judge me, no one, except God. And God can’t judge me either, not until it’s over. He didn’t give me a beginner’s manual when I was born, He didn’t give me an instruction book, so nothing I can do on this planet can be wrong. Everything I do could be right, and do you know why? Because the people who make the rules are far worse than I am. Nothing I could do could be wrong.”
However, there are unwritten rules that everyone knows as right or wrong, there is an ethic that we all know….
“But that same ethic watches as people die. That ethic knows what America has done to the black people, a people that instead of helping to overthrow the system, they help to demolish the governments of other countries and then…to hell with them all. It is not ethics that drives the world, it is not ethics that keeps us in check, it is power. It is the fear of bullets, destruction and chaos that keeps us fighting. People are not guided by morals, because what I’ve seen them do is not at all … ‘moral.'”
But still you have to admit that we all know what is right and what is wrong at some point. Even those who do evil do it knowing, however, that they are in the wrong, whether they do it anyway is another matter….
“But I still disagree with you; what is wrong? If you really think about it–what if the person who places a bomb is right? Could we be wrong?”
And you take a man’s life is wrong. There is no discussion.
“This is bad, true. But what if the man in question was sick and it was euthanasia? Taking someone’s life unfortunately is normal, think about capital punishment, we kill people for killing other people. I kill him, then they kill me, and who kills them? Do you understand? Can you say this is morally right?”
Never. That’s the biggest mistake you can make, and that’s only done by justice systems that have failed, that don’t know how to function as they should, capital punishment is the failure of justice.
“The fact is that we have no morals; we can be ‘morally’ unimpeachable and even ‘politically correct,’ but we have no morals. As a nation, as a world, as a human race, we have no morals. We never help those who cannot defend themselves and are weak; we stand with those who are the greatest. Is America the strongest? Then we all love America and tolerate whatever it does. Stars, celebrities could shit on our children and we wouldn’t say anything, Michael Jackson kept kids in bed and we love Michael Jackson because he wrote good songs for us. As a human race we have no morals, so we can’t pass judgment on anybody. And for the same reasons, I say don’t judge me. Until there is real reparations for American Indians, until we give African nations back to Africans — there are no more Africans in Africa! Only white people! The Dutch, the British, etc. are people who do not belong in Africa! How can we talk about morality if it does not exist? We talk about power. Because the world is based on that and nothing else. Power and war. Those are the only two things that America, the media and governments could give me advice on, because those are the only things that they are able to show me and show the whole world.”
We agree that this is the way things are, but now it’s a matter of taking one side or the other, either you accept the way things are and make a profit, or you go your own way knowing that you are not complicit with them. Negativity can be fought….
“You see, for you it’s negativity, for me it’s reality, and that doesn’t give you any chance to move with your imagination, that’s why you see it as negativity. If I told happy, light-hearted stories à la De La Soul, you might think I am the new Messiah, since I paint such a pleasant situation, but in three or four years, you would be ready to sacrifice me, because you would keep looking for the beautiful image I promised you. But if you listen to what I tell you, in three or four years you will be ready for what will happen, because you expected it: I will prepare you for what will happen. There are people who want to sell five or six million records and tell you the stories; I have already sold them and I’m certainly not trying to sell happiness, I’m trying to give awareness of what’s going to happen. So when there are more riots, let no one come knocking on my door … I will write ‘Tupac Shakur’ and everyone will pass by without looking for me. Because I feel my conscience is clear.”
Just one last thing: One of the most impressive tattoos you have is the cross you wear on your back that says ‘Exodus.’ What does it mean?
“‘Exodus 1831,’ exodus means ‘departure,’ and I had it done when I got out of prison the first time, I still can’t believe I went to prison because I had gotten into a fistfight with someone, anyway… Exodus…, the escape from society, the exodus, because at a certain point in my life, I couldn’t be a part of it anymore. I had money, I was successful, I was trying to set myself up, and the more money I made, the more they tried to put me in jail. So I escaped. In prison I read Nat Turner’s “Confessions,” which told of the only revolt made by blacks that was really successful and that happened in 1831, the year Nat Turner and his people turned the whole plantation upside down, killing everybody. I did it to remind all the racists and all ‘these bastards of skinheads and the like that not all blacks are peaceful and quiet like slaves. America likes to make us remember how they had made us slaves, and I like to remind them that we can run around its plantations, knocking anyone out. That’s what the symbol behind my back means to me, and every symbol I wear has a story like that. I just want to say one thing: this interview will not exhaust your readers’ knowledge of who Tupac really is, because this is just one day in my life, one out of 365 and out of several years, this is but a glimmer of who I am. So they have to study, train, ask questions, grow, criticize, understand, unite and discuss to understand things thoroughly, to continue what I do. If I am the messiah for them and then they shoot me, when I fall down they would come back suckers, because they would not really learn anything. In the meantime that I am here, they have to use their brains by studying and studying again, so that when I am no longer here, there are 30,000 guys, stronger than me, to continue what I have undertaken.”

2023.06.29 17:41 Famous-Twist-5347 Hip Hop and its Global Influence in the Present Day

Jun 28, 2021 11:00AM ● By Anand Subramanian, updated June 24, 2022
Hip-hop is a culture that has changed America since the 1980s, not just a music genre. Its influence has expanded across the United States, influencing politics and media culture. The issue surrounding hip-hop music and culture has been at the forefront for many years. From the commotion of the east-west rivalry to critics who are quick to point out rap's violent lyrics, it remains a hot issue. People sometimes let the stigma associated with hip-hop overwhelm the music's potency. However, individuals may misunderstand the meaning of the messages that music might convey. Hip-hop can raise awareness of many critical cultural problems, such as racism and misogyny, while also evoking emotion. For example, Kendrick Lamar, who has been dubbed a lyrical genius by some, attempts to inspire encouragement to conquer personal issues. His album "To Pimp A Butterfly'' addresses consumerism, racism, oppression, and, most importantly, self-love. The album's title is a brilliant reference to Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," as well as a metaphor for the literal pimping of something as lovely and free as a butterfly. So, let us give a short history and the impact of hip hop in 2022.
So, what gave it its name?
The origins of the name hip-hop are variously explained. The most well-known one, though, features Keith ("Keef Cowboy") Wiggins, a member of the rap group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. In reference to a buddy who had joined the army, the rapper used the phrases hip/hop/hip/hop, emulating the sound of troops marching. According to some sources, Kevin ("Lovebug Starski") Smith was there when Wiggins coined the nickname. Hip-hop was later popularised via songs, most notably the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight."

Hip hop and its influence. Source - Google

Hip Hop components came together in New York City's Bronx area. It was the early 1970s, and conditions were rougher than usual in metropolitan America's poorest neighborhoods. Hip Hop sprang from a lot of nothing—and a lot of invention. DJ Kool Herc is credited for flipping the switch during a dance party in August 1973. To identify and expand percussion breaks—the most danceable elements of a song—he played the same record on dual turntables, alternating between them. It was a method that drew dancers who had spent days and weeks perfecting their skills. The result that night was electrifying, and other DJs in the Bronx quickly tried to outdo Herc. There are contradictory stories of when Bambaataa started holding parties, owing to the sometimes hazy history of hip-roots. hop's Some claim he started in 1970, predating acknowledged "father of hip hop" Kool Herc, while others claim he began in 1976, after Herc, in fact attending and getting inspiration from Kool Herc events. He swore to utilise hip-hop to get angry adolescents out of gangs and to establish the Universal Zulu Nation. Bambaataa and his disciples — a collection of dancers, performers, and DJs – embarked on the first hip-hop tour outside of the United States in 1982. He regarded hip hop tours as the key to expanding hip hop and his Universal Zulu Nation. Furthermore, it would help promote hip hop principles, which he believes are focused on peace, harmony, love, and having fun. Many musicians and gang members agree that "hip hop saved a lot of lives." His influence influenced several international musicians, including French rapper MC Solaar.
It was a code that has permeated Hip Hop ever since, such as employing abilities and whatever resources are available to create something new and emulating and imitating the brilliance of others while injecting own flair till the freshness radiates. Competition was and still is a significant driver in hip-hop. Like a strong star, this dance-party culture swiftly pulled various creative forms into orbit. A burgeoning movement of optimistic poets, visual artists, and urban thinkers offered their thoughts and voices via whatever methods they might find.

The last decade of the twentieth century, colloquially known as "the ninety," saw significant societal developments in American history and society. The emergence of hip-hop culture is one example of a significant new trend that occurred in the 1990s. Hip-hop has its roots in Black community awareness in the United States. Furthermore, hip-hop culture may be seen as a direct reaction to the socio-economic challenges that arose from that past. The Black community and other historically oppressed groups converted their dissatisfaction with the injustices they encountered into an effective protest, helping to reorganize social attitudes and possibilities. This musical trend began in the late 1980s, but the power and substantiation associated with hip-hop music mainly emerged throughout the 1990s. Following this line of thinking, the 1990s witnessed significant shifts in music and culture. So much so that the United States saw the birth of a true "Hip-Hop Nation." Moreover, despite debate about the music's validity, hip-hop represents a national movement with the potential to raise a whole segment of the national community.

The Legacy of Hip Hop. Source - Google
Hip-hop has had an unmistakable influence on Black communities throughout the United States, particularly given that Black performers dominate the music. Furthermore, it has provided a forum for them to speak out against unfair contradictions in society, the government, or the treatment of Black people in this nation.
People who are interested in hip-hop culture often ask this question. It is also an incredibly crucial difference in the hip-hop scene. What is the difference between rap and hip hop? The usual response is that hip-hop is a culture comprised of four elements* – deejaying, MCing, graffiti, and dancing – and that rap is a kind of popular music that sprang from Hip-Hop culture. However, when we concentrate on the distinctions between rap and hip-hop, we often forget what they share. For example, there would be no point in comparing them in the first place if the two notions were unrelated. Rap and hip-hop, in this sense, are not diametrically opposed — rap is a product of hip-hop culture. But this is more than simply a method of thinking about the two types' interaction. It is also a method of creating music. When rap music is seen as an expression of a larger and deeper set of hip-hop processes, the emphasis shifts away from what rap music is and toward what it does. Rap music naturally comes into play more completely when understood in the context of hip-culture, hop's history, philosophy, and goals. Identity, communal duty, self-discipline, and personal expression – all-important to hip-hop culture – become central to rap as well.
In 2020, Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion's Saturday Night Live performance issued a striking statement about the killing of Breonna Taylor, a medical worker shot in her house by police officers. Lil Yachty, an Atlanta, Georgia-based rapper, has often utilized his songs to express his impoverished hardships. Similarly, Hip-Hop lyrics can remind young people of reality away from social media, a phenomenon that may occasionally affect young people's perceptions of what it means to be successful or respectable. Kendrick Lamar's song "HUMBLE" discusses the severe manipulation used on photographs of women nowadays and how it creates false expectations of women's bodies. In the song, he expresses his desire to see something natural, such as stretch marks, since he is "sick and tired of the photoshop." This is critical for young people to hear, especially young women, whose perception of what they should look like has been contaminated by photographs shared on social media. This ensures that those young ladies will not feel compelled to undertake surgeries or engage in other actions to meet society's expectations.
Hip-hop has been growing in Super Bowl halftime shows over the previous decade. But it's never been front and center. That changed on February 13, when the genre led a Super Bowl halftime performance for the first time. It's been a long time for hip-hop to headline the Super Bowl. Colin Kaepernick's knee protest highlighted the NFL's diversity and social justice concerns, prompting the league to join with JAY-Z's -Roc Nation in 2019. The agreement permitted the entertainment firm to advise on artist selection for important NFL events such as the Super Bowl and participate in the NFL and Players Coalition's "Inspire Change" project. The project focused on education, economic progress, police and community relations, and criminal justice reform. Beginning with Dre's "The Next Episode" and finishing with "Still D.R.E.," the show also included Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent, with each artist playing some of their most successful songs — including ones recorded by Dre himself. Overall, the halftime concert was a triumph, demonstrating the possibility of a complete hip-hop halftime production — from start to finish — while also objecting where it could.
📷SuperBowl performance 2022. Source - Google
Hip-hop history is a fascinating topic that deserves to be explored further. Since its start in the 1970s, this cultural movement has seen significant development and evolution. What started as a local effort in New York City to create a haven for African-American and Puerto Rican adolescents has become a worldwide phenomenon. Hip hop is still a dominating cultural force that influences people all over the globe.

2023.05.14 13:03 DragonFucker99 What Kendrick Lamar's "Rich Spirit" ACTUALLY Means A Biblical Analysis

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:3)

Foreword

This post builds on an amazing Analysis of Rich Spirit by u/Flaky-Mission, which is well worth reading. To summarize:
Rich Spirit captures a flawed Kendrick Lamar as he is beginning to integrate the spiritual teachings of Eckhart Tolle in his life. In this "awakening", Kendrick criticizes the ego and materialism he sees in others, while being completely blind to his own ego and attachment to wealth. As u/Flaky-Mission beautifully puts it, Rich Spirit is like "spirituality being taken out for a spin by an inexperienced driver".

What is a "Rich Spirit"?

To understand, look at this quote from A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,” Jesus said, “for theirs will be the kingdom of heaven.” What does “poor in spirit” mean? No inner baggage, no identifications. Not with things, nor with any mental concepts that have a sense of self in them."
So what does it mean to be rich in spirit? To have a strong sense of attachment, to have a big ego, and to be spiritually immature. Most people will misinterpret having a "Rich Spirit" as being highly spiritual and awakened, even though it means the opposite. In the same way, Kendrick sees himself as highly spiritual in Rich Spirit, even though he is still stuck in materialism and ego. He misuses spirituality as an excuse to be distant in his relationships, rather than directly face his problems.

How does Kendrick have a "Rich Spirit"?

To have a "rich spirit" is to have strong worldly attachments. We see in United in Grief how Kendrick is attached to wealth and sex as a coping mechanism: "Poverty was the case, but money wiping' the tears away" / "Green eyes said you'd be okay, first tour, sex the pain away". In Rich Spirit, he also becomes attached to the idea he is more spiritual than, and therefore superior to, other people.
Eckhart Tolle himself warns of this:
This is why renouncing all possessions has been an ancient spiritual practice in both East and West. Renunciation of possessions, however, will not automatically free you of the ego. It will attempt to ensure its survival by finding something else to identify with, for example, a mental image of yourself as someone who has transcended all interest in material possessions and is therefore superior, is more spiritual than others. There are people who have renounced all possessions but have a bigger ego than some millionaires. If you take away one kind of identification, the ego will quickly find another. It ultimately doesn’t mind what it identifies with as long as it has an identity.

Analysis! Analysis! Analysis!

[Chorus]
0:30 "Rich n\***, broke phone / Tryna keep the balance, I'm stayin' strong"*
Spiritual ego: Kendrick has a "broke phone" because he abstains from technology and social media. He's able to "keep the balance" between his extraordinary success (being a "rich n****") and his spirituality. He's "staying strong" in the face of a world that demands you engage in the toxicity of social media, and by abstaining, he thinks he's more spiritually pure than everyone else (we'll see more evidence of this throughout the song).
Materialism: Kendrick is "tryna keep the balance", which means he is literally trying to maintain his bank balance. He's attached to his wealth. Because he's a "rich n****", his friends and family to try to use him for money, but he's "stayin' strong" by being completely unresponsive to their requests, as if he had a "broke phone".
Silence/Being distant: Kendrick's "broke phone" refers to how he hides his infidelity, calling back to United in Grief where he says "phone off the ringer, tell the world I'm busy" before hooking up with "green eyes". The "broke phone" is also a symbol of his silence on social media. Finally, the "broke phone" is a symbol for his distance and emotional unavailability in his relationships, as it implies he often fails to call or pick up calls from his friends and family. This is supported by the use of a broken rotary phone rather than a broken digital phone in the Rich Spirit music video. Kendrick is "tryna keep the balance" between his personal life and his music career.

0:35 "Stop playin' with me 'fore I turn you to a song / Stop playin' with me 'fore I turn you to a song"
This line could also be about Kendrick "tryna keep the [financial] balance". He's fighting off fake friends/family who try to use him for money by threatening to make a song about them. He is so influential that this is a significant and effective threat.
The "song" could also refer to the argument in We Cry Together, especially considering it's the next song on the album. With this interpretation in mind, this line shows him callously addressing Whitney (his wife), telling her to shut up before he makes their relationship issues public. He is using silence to avoid being reminded that he is a cheater. His lack of empathy and distance later becomes a point of contention in We Cry Together: "[Kendrick:] Bitch I don't know shit, fuck yo' feelings" and "[Taylor Paige:] Bitch, I ain't slow nor ditsy, I know when you're being distant / I know when you fake busy". This builds on the theme of him being distant in his relationships.

0:40 "Ayy, bitch I'm attractive / Can't fuck with you no more, I'm fastin'"
Continuing with the interpretation of Kendrick "tryna keep the [financial] balance", Kendrick is telling his friends and family he "Can't fuck with [them] no more". He is cutting off the snakes who only care about his wealth.
Kendrick is also saying he's "attractive" - both physically and spiritually. As u/Flaky-Mission noted in his analysis, "attractive" refers to the Law of Attraction, a New Age idea that postulates that you attract what you think about. Kendrick is saying that he is becoming spiritually awakened. He is "fastin'", which is a traditional spiritual practice in Christianity where one refrains from eating for a fixed period of time. As a result, Kendrick can no longer "fuck with" or associate with the less spiritual people in his life. Of course, this is Kendrick's spiritual ego showing - Jesus himself constantly associated with sinners, the poor, and the outcasts of society. This is reinforced by the fact that openly bragging about your attractiveness is egotistical.
Finally, this line could build on the theme of infidelity in the chorus. Here, Kendrick continues to taunt Whitney, saying that he is attractive, wealthy, and popular, and as a result can easily cheat or leave her and find someone else without consequence.
To summarize, the chorus has multiple interpretations:
Kendrick's Spiritual Awakening: Kendrick views himself as more spiritual than others. As a result, he has a "broke phone" to avoid the negative influences of social media. He stops associating with many people, including his own listeners, because he sees himself as "attractive" - that is, spiritually superior to them. However, he is blind to the spiritual ego he is forming.
Maintaining Wealth: In the midst of his astronomical success, Kendrick finds himself surrounded by snakes and fake friends who try to use him for money. In an effort to "keep his [bank account] balance", he cuts them off as if he had a "broke phone". He dissuades them by threatening to leverage his influence to "turn [them] to a song", and also stops "fuck[ing] with" (associating with) them completely. His materialism strains his relationships.
Unspoken Infidelity: Kendrick abuses his wealth and success as a "rich n****" to fuel his lust addiction, and he hides his infidelity by turning his phone off and pretending he is busy, like it was a "broke phone". When Whitney confronts him, he is distant and avoids the topic, telling her to "stop playin' with me 'fore I turn you to a song [We Cry Together]". He reminds her that to the world, he is "attractive", and can "stop fuck[ing] with" her whenever he wants. In the chorus itself, he is silent about his adultery.

Three Key Themes

Throughout Rich Spirit, there are three key themes:
Spiritual ego: Pay close attention to how Kendrick points out the flaws, immorality, and spiritual missteps of others without acknowledging his own failures. When Kendrick talks about his spiritual attainment, it is always in direct contrast to other people, implying a sense of spiritual superiority. He is often subtly hypocritical when judging others. This passage from the Gospel of Matthew is relevant:
Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when the beam is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Kendrick sees the speck (flaws) in his brother's (other people's) eye, but fails to see the beam (decaying relationships, infidelity, unsustainable coping mechanisms) in his own eye. But rather than work on his own problems, he spends the song criticizing others.
Materialism: Many lines in Rich Spirit point to Kendrick's desire to maintain his wealth and his hesitance to give it away. Kendrick also uses wealth as a coping mechanism to deal with pain as well as to "fix" relationships. Note that when Kendrick claims that he isn't attached to his wealth, he contrasts himself with others who are attached, feeding his spiritual ego.
Silence/being distant: In Rich Spirit, Kendrick repeatedly criticizes social media and clout-chasing. He avoids using technology, and remains silent online. However, he is also distant in his relationships and effectively goes silent when cheating, not responding to his phone. To reflect this, Kendrick uses double entendres that simultaneously criticize social media and expose his coldness in relationships.

Kendrick's Insane Lyricism

Feel free to skip around or just search for bars you don't understand - there's admittedly a lot here. But I promise, if you're interested in lyricism, this is worth reading though.

Verse 1

0:00 "Takin' my baby to school, then I pray for her / Cause you bitches ain't never been cool, writin' testament"
Kendrick says he is "writin' testament", a reference to the Old Testament and New Testament (these make up the Bible). He claims that his raps are holy scripture, which is an admittedly arrogant claim. This demonstrates his large spiritual ego.

0:11 "Painting pictures put me in the Louvre, that's a definite"
The Louvre is the world's largest museum and contains some of the most famous art in history. Kendrick is saying he is so good at describing images in his raps that they should be in the Louvre alongside other universally acclaimed high art, again showing his ego.

0:14 "Celebrity do not mean integrity, you fool / I'm a good man, shake your hand, firm grip rule"
On the surface, he's calling out other celebrities for lacking integrity, as well as mocking the audience for seeing celebrities as perfect people. He says he's a "good man" who will "shake your hand" with a "firm grip", which implies that he has integrity and is therefore an exception. However, he also lacks integrity - he constantly lies to Whitney about his cheating. Here, him saying "you fool" is pointing to the audience and saying "you're a fool if you think this doesn't apply to me too".
"You fool" is also a Biblical reference, which ties back to Kendrick's claim that he's "writing' testament". Jesus said "and whoever says, “You fool!” will be liable to the hell of fire." (Matthew 5:22). This is in line with Jesus' teachings to "Judge not, lest ye be judged". Kendrick is building up an ego by judging others, since judging someone implies that you are better than them. However, Kendrick is rapping from the perspective of his past self. By choosing the phrase "you fool", we can see that present Kendrick is conscious of the ego of his past self.

0:22 "More than two M's, for a show, but add another two"
The other post already discussed multiple potential meanings of "M", but the straightforward reading shows Kendrick bragging that he makes over $2 million per show. Then, despite already being rich, Kendrick still wants to accumulate wealth and "add another two [million]", showing his persistent materialism.

Verse 2

0:50 "The morality can wait / Feedback on low latency"
Here Kendrick refers to the instant (low latency) gratification and feedback people get from social media. This causes people to overlook "morality" for likes, attention, and clout. He showcases a subtle ego as this suggests he is morally superior for not using social media.
"Feedback on low latency" also refers to a physical feedback loop that might occur at a concert when a microphone picks up the audio from the speakers, which can only happen when there is low latency between the microphone and the speakers. This produces a nasty distorted screeching noise. In a similar way, when Kendrick ignores morality and commits infidelity, it creates a negative feedback loop. He uses sex as a coping mechanism for pain, but cheating produces guilt, shame, and massive tension in his marriage, so he has more sex to make himself feel better. This causes him to be trapped in a cycle, since he doesn't know the proper way to deal with his emotions.

0:53 "I'm glitchin' from the face"
Bro is spitting fr
(but seriously, read u/Flaky-Mission's post on this section)

0:56 "I'm running out of space, ask Whitney she okay / Never mind a hundred K, why you lyin' on Benjamin? / He turnin' in his grave / I'd be lyin' if I said I wouldn't give this shit away"
Whitney is not ok. Kendrick is likely being willfully ignorant of the pain he causes Whitney by cheating on her and is using silence/being distant as a coping mechanism to avoid thinking about it. When Kendrick says "Never mind a hundred K", he is trying to use his wealth to fix his marriage (by flippantly giving Whitney $100,000), another example of his materialism. Again, this foreshadows the argument in We Cry Together, where Kendrick yells "Man, bitch, you trippin', who bought you that Rollie chain?" as if that will fix the deeper relationship issues present. We see how he can't buy forgiveness when in Count Me Out when he says "What fair when the money don't take things back?".
"Why you lyin' on Benjamin" refers to hundred dollar bills (money). Kendrick is rhetorically asking why people lie about their wealth on social media, knowing that the answer is for clout and attention. Kendrick is also asking why people are "lyin' [down] on Benjamin" (sitting on a pile of money). In contrast, he plans to "give this shit away" and donate all of his money. Notice how he builds up a spiritual ego by implying his planned charity makes him better than others. Also note that he is still "tryna keep the balance".

1:05 "The aloof Buddha, I'm Christ with a shooter / Praise to Muhammed, I might n\***-noose ya"*
Buddha literally means "enlightened one", and aloof means "detached, distant". Kendrick is calling himself enlightened, again showing how Kendrick is ironically building up an ego about being spiritual. Him being the "aloof Buddha" shows how he is using spirituality to distance himself from his problems, which also describes his treatment of Whitney in the last bar. Christ, meaning Jesus Christ, was famously peaceful, and is the source of the idiom "turn the other cheek". To be "Christ with a shooter" is an oxymoron, which alludes to Kendrick's spiritual hypocrisy throughout this song.

1:10 "AP Michael Friedman, my friends cooler / Primary, so the resale value stupid"
AP refers to Audemars Piguet, a Swiss Luxury Watch company whose watches have become a symbol of wealth in rap. Kendrick is referring to his jewelry as his "friends", showing how he has replaced genuine connection and relationships with materialism. This also shows how distant he is from his actual friends. Kendrick's jewelry is so "icy" (covered in diamonds) that it must be "cooler" than the listeners jewelry. His jewelry is also "primary", meaning one of a kind or the first of its kind, so the "resale value stupid" (absurdly high). This could reference his diamond crown of thorns which was a one-of-a-kind piece that cost $3 million. Notice how Kendrick is suggesting that he is better than the listener for having extremely expensive jewelry, which shows his ego and betrays his previous claim that he would "give this shit away".
"Michael Friedman" is also the Head of Complications of AP. Kendrick is saying that he is so famous, instead of just buying watches from AP, he is also friends with the lead designer of the watch company. Therefore his friends are cooler than yours (this brag is again showing his ego). Here, "primary" means he's been with his friends since primary school, or elementary school. Because he's been with them so long, he it would be "stupid" to sell them (leave them) now.

1:14 "I would never live my life on a computer / IG'll get you life for a chikabooya / More power to ya, love em from a distance"
By saying "more power to ya", Kendrick is saying you can live your life however you want (but he would "never live [his] life on a computer"). Notice how the subtle judgmental tone feeds Kendrick's spiritual ego. "More power to ya" is also wordplay because to live your life online, it requires electrical power. "Love 'em from a distance" refers to the dynamic created by social media (think likes on Instagram) and celebrity worship (of which Kendrick's audience is no exception).
"Love 'em from a distance" also refers to Kendrick's distance from the ones he loves, particularly Whitney. This creates tension in his marriage, which blows up in We Cry Together: "Bitch, I ain't slow nor ditsy, I know when you're being distant".

1:24 "And my cousin tried to sue me like he got the privilege / But I didn't lose sleep 'cause I got the spirit"
Kendrick is saying that he is so spiritual and detached from material things that he isn't worried about losing money from his cousin suing him. He has "the spirit", so it simply doesn't bother him. This is another reference to the Gospel of Matthew in the Bible (New Testament): "If someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well" (Matthew 5:40). This is just another way of saying "turn the other cheek". This Biblical reference supports Kendrick's claim that he's "writin' testament". However, we can see that Kendrick is building a spiritual ego around not being attached to wealth. It is hypocritical to openly declare that you have "the spirit".

Verse 3

2:00 "Frat brother, real n\***, that brother"*
In the next few lines, Kendrick mocks how (predominantly white) frat bro culture appropriates the aesthetic of gangs without having to live with any of the consequences. He contrasts the "frat brother" who uses rap as an aesthetic from the "real n****" who actually lives the subject matter of rap and who contributes to the culture. The use of the word "brother" makes fun of the fact that white frat bros can't say the n-word, implying that they say "brother" as a substitute.

2:02 "We just upped the score, give me dap, brother"
From the perspective of the "real n****", upping the score refers to killing a member of an enemy gang, which is then celebrated by dapping. Meanwhile, the frat brother who is watching the game sees his team score a point, claims "we just upped the score", and appropriates the dap to celebrate.

2:05 "Spirit medium, I don't rap, brother"
A "spirit medium" is someone who claims to be able to communicate with the dead/spirits. The "real n****" has seen his friends die, so when he raps, it's more than rap - he is channeling the spirts of his friends. As Tupac says in Mortal Man on TPAB, "Because the spirts, we ain't even really rapping' / We just letting our dead homies tell stories for us".
On the other hand, "spirit" can refer to an alcoholic beverage, while "medium" refers to the substance through which something is transferred. Thus, Kendrick is mocking frat bro culture by saying the "frat bro" is just a spirit medium, or a vessel for alcohol. All the frat bro does is drink and party, so he never raps.
Finally, Kendrick is talking about his own rapping ability. This line echoes the idea in Worldwide Steppers that Kendrick "Asked God to speak through me, that's what you hearin' now". Kendrick is channeling God through his raps, and as a result, his raps are so spiritual and perfect that they transcend the genre itself. This is Kendrick's spiritual ego talking.

2:07 "We headed there now, are you strapped brother?"
The "real n****" is on his way to commit a robbery or murder with the gang (think of the story told in The Art of Peer Pressure). He needs to make sure they are all "strapped" (armed with a gun) to execute it successfully.
In a humorous contrast, the "frat brother" makes sure to check that all of the other brothers have their seatbelts "strapped" before leaving. Despite wanting to look dangerous, the frat brother is almost comically safe.

2:09 "Ayy, peacemaker, but I'm not naive, brother"
Kendrick refers to himself as a peacemaker. This is another reference to the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus states "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God". In Biblical times, a "peacemaker" was someone who was sent to resolve a conflict between warring parties. However, Kendrick is not "naive", and doesn't think he can easily end long-standing disputes.
Given the context of the last four bars, Kendrick is likely referring to conflicts between gangs and frats. Kendrick wants to end disputes between rival gangs, but understands from his own experience how this may be impossible. He also wants to end the cultural division between those that make up gangs and the typically white upper-middle class people who make up frats.

2:12 "Ayy, gotta watch your homies and police, brother"
In order to be a peacemaker, Kendrick has to "police" his "homies" to make sure they don't fight each other or other gangs. Alternatively, he has to police the behavior of frat brothers, making sure they aren't brazenly imitating gang culture.
Additionally, he has to watch both "homies" and "police" in order to make sure there is peace between his friends and police officers. The divide between "homies" and "police" is also representative of the demographic divide between gangs/frats.

2:14 "Ayy, clout chasin' hell of a disease, brother"
While trying to police his friends' behavior, Kendrick sees them making extremely bad decisions for clout. The gang member might kill and brag about it on social media for clout, or flex their drug money and self-snitch in a rap. Likewise, the frat brother could pretend to be in a gang, or be openly racist for attention. The desire for clout infects his friends as if it were a disease. It also has severe consequences - it's not just a common cold, but rather a "hell of a disease".
This also builds on Kendrick's criticisms of social media through the song, as clout chasing is a phenomenon greatly exacerbated by social media.

2:17 "I'm fastin' four days out the week, brother"
As u/Flaky-Mission noted in their analysis, this is a reference to the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector:
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Kendrick is saying that he is so spiritual, he fasts four days a week (fasting is a traditional spiritual practice in Christianity). Kendrick is just like the Pharisee - throughout all of Rich Spirit, he has bragged about how much more spiritual he is than other people and about how much money he will give away. He has a massive spiritual ego in this song and lacks humility. In the end, Kendrick will be judged like the Pharisee.
In a sense, Kendrick is clout chasing - he is stuck in his savior complex, and wants to be seen as someone who is spiritually awakened and who can save humanity. By describing clout chasing as a "hell of a disease" in the previous line, Kendrick subtly points to the Biblical consequences of his attitude.

2:29 "I pray to God you actually pray when somebody dies / Thoughts and prayers, way better off timelines"
Kendrick is saying that when other (famous) people die, people should pray for them in private rather than broadcasting their grief on social media "timelines" for validation. This is another reference to the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus says "When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men … but when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your father who is unseen." (Matthew 6:5-8). Hypocritically, Kendrick prays for this on a song that will be listened to by millions.

2:34 "False claimin' not cute, I'm mortified"
"False claimin'" also refers to the practice of pretending to be affiliated with a specific gang, calling back to Kendrick's criticisms of frat culture at the beginning of the verse. Kendrick disavows false claiming, saying it is "not cute", but makes him "mortified". The word mortified begins with the prefix mort-, meaning "death" in Latin. This word choice shows the tragic and fatal consequences false claiming can have if it causes people to get tied into gang violence.
People may also "false claim" on social media when rappers die, pretending to have been fans, and feigning grief over someone they never cared about before.

2:37 "The new Earth in hot pursuit, two hundred lives"
"The new Earth" refers to Eckhart Tolle's spiritual self-help book, "A New Earth". In it Eckhart Tolle defines, "the new Earth" as a world where people are increasingly awakened to the true nature of consciousness. One of Tolle's key teachings is to see through the illusion of ego. Here is relevant excerpt from the book:
To “own” something – what does it really mean? What does it mean to make something “mine”? If you stand on a street in New York, point to a huge skyscraper and say, “That building is mine. I own it,” you are either very wealthy or you are delusional or a liar. In any case, you are telling a story in which the thought form “I” and the thought form “building” merge into one. That’s how the mental concept of ownership works. If everybody agrees with your story, there will be signed pieces of paper to certify their agreement with it. You are wealthy. If nobody agrees with the story, they will send you to a psychiatrist. You are delusional, or a compulsive liar.
With this in mind, "false claimin'" refers to all of the false claims of ownership and identity that the ego makes. An alternate definition of "mortify" is "to subjugate (the body, passions, etc) by abstinence, ascetic discipline, or self-inflicted suffering)". When Kendrick says he's "mortified", he's saying he is immune to the false claims of ego because of his abstinence to social media and his commitment to give away his wealth. As a result of his personal awakening, "the new Earth [is] in hot pursuit", meaning that it is rapidly getting closer to becoming a reality.
However, Eckhart Tolle says The New Earth can only exist in the here and now - it can't be getting closer.
The arising of a new heaven and by implication a new earth are not future events that are going to make us free. Nothing is going to make us free because only the present moment can make us free. That realization is the awakening. Awakening as a future event has no meaning because awakening is the realization of Presence. So the new heaven , the awakened consciousness, is not a future state to be achieved. A new heaven and a new earth are arising within you at this moment, and if they are not arising at this moment, they are no more than a thought in your head and therefore not arising at all. What did Jesus tell his disciples? “Heaven is right here in the midst of you.
Thus, the "new earth in hot pursuit" is just a thought in Kendrick's head, and not close at all. In the same way, Kendrick's believes he is close to enlightenment, but he is actually very far from it. Kendrick thinks he is "mortified" and therefore protected from the false claims of the ego, but this itself is a false claim of his ego. Kendrick's belief that he is already awakened is the biggest obstacle to his awakening. Ultimately, his spiritual shortcomings blow up in his face in the next song, We Cry Together.

LA Knight vs Austin Theory for the US Championship
Build
On the Raw after Wrestlemania, Austin Theory is in the ring cutting a promo on how he is “The Now”. He asks, “Who in wrestling has a better future than me? And is answered by… “L. A. Knight! YEAH!” LA Knight struts down to the ring with a microphone in hand. He says, “Austin, you’re a fraud! Not only did you beat an aging John Cena.. YEAH!.. You beat an aging Seth Rollins.. YEAH.. to win that title! You have done nothing to prove to me or anybody else that you are a fraud. And that’s not an insult… it’s a fact of life… YEAH!” Austin Theory appears infuriated by Knight’s insults. He says, “At least I’ve been able to do something in this company! All you’ve done is lose match after match and say yeah over and over again.” LA Knight responds with.. “YEAH! You’re right. But I think my fortunes are going to change soon.” LA Knight punches Austin who quickly scrambles out of the ring. Knight says, “Because who’s game is it?? It’s L. A. Knight’s game!.. YEAH!”
On the next week’s Raw, LA Knight hosts The Fact of Life. He walks down to the podium in the middle of the ring. “Today’s episode is very special. We will be dissecting Austin Theory’s failure of a career. Let’s get started all the way back in 2020… YEAH!... where Austin Theory joined a fellow failure of a group, Seth Rollins’ disciples.. YEAH!... If you don’t remember that, don’t worry, neither do I.. YEAH!... Then, if I recall, he did something that got him moved back to NXT. If you’re wondering what he did, just look it up… YEAH!.. Now back in NXT, everyone’s favorite fraud begins to hang out with Johnny Gargano. There, he showed some promise. Then he became somebody’s favorite wrestler… YEAH!... Just like John Cena, just like The Rock, and especially like Hulk Hogan, he was good at kissing ass!.. YEAH!... And all of his ass kissing got him the Money in the Bank briefcase in which he failed to use properly and proved to everyone he is a DUMMY!.. yeah… YEAH!.. He then becomes the first dummy in history to cash in the Money in the Bank for the US Title.. YEAH!.. After a 75 day reign with the prestigious title, he drops it to notorious dummy, Bobby Lashley… YEAH!.. Now with his wrestling daddy gone, he is forced to work his way up until finally he beats a crumbling Seth Rollins to hold the title for a second time. Then he calls out and beats John Cena in the worst match in Wrestlemania history!.. YEAH!.. Shane McMahon outwrestled him with a torn ACL… YEAH!.. And that brings us here. With no one's ass to kiss, with no old geezer to fight, Austin Theory will stand across the ring from wrestling’s next megastar… L.. A.. Knight!.. YEAH!” Austin Theory jumps LA Knight with a steel chair. He viciously attacks Knight with it and slaps the dummy button.. “Dummy, yeah”.. A pissed off Austin Theory walks backstage.
For the next two weeks, LA Knight continues to provoke Austin Theory as Theory shows zero patience for Knight. On the go Raw to Backlash, LA Knight tells Austin Theory, “If you can pin my shoulders to the mat, 1, 2, 3.. YEAH!.. I will treat you with respect and I will accept you as “The Now” but if I win, you will crawl on your hands and knees… YEAH!.. You will bow down to me and say, “You are wrestling’s next megastar”.. YEAH!.. “You are wrestling’s next megastar”… YEAH!...” Austin Theory runs down to the ring with a steel chair. He swings at LA Knight who dodges the attack. LA Knight scrambles out of the ring and says, “I’m just faster than you!.. YEAH!..”
Match
The match is a brawl from start to finish. Neither man ever truly gets an upper hand on the other. Towards the end of the match, LA Knight has Austin Theory up for the Gravy Train when Austin pushes Knight off into the ref. The ref goes down. Austin Theory low blows LA Knight. Austin then grabs the title from ringside, slides into the ring and begins calling for LA Knight to get up. He goes for the title shot but LA Knight ducks. He kicks Theory in the gut, causing him to drop the title. He then picks it up himself and hits Austin with it. He says, “YEAH!” and pins him… 1, 2, 3… LA Knight grabs the title and says, “You’re a fraud… YEAH!” and walks out of the arena.
LA Knight wins the US title in 7 minutes.
Zelina Vega vs Rhea Ripley(C) for the Smackdown Women's Championship
Build
On the Smackdown after Wrestlemania, Judgement Day comes out to the ring. Rhea Ripley grabs a mic and claims to be unbeatable. She claims that nobody in the locker room has a chance against her. Finn Balor then takes the mic. He addresses his match with Edge then insults the LWO, calling them a shitty nostalgia act, with no bearing on the business. He is then interrupted by the LWO. The LWO come out and stand at ringside and Rey Mysterio grabs a mic. He says, “That’s a lot of talk for a team that had only one win at Wrestlemania. But you are sure full of yourself, aren’t you Finn?” Zelina Vega grabs the mic from Rey. “Rhea is too! I’ll kick her ass!” Santos Escobar grabs Zelina and pulls her back and tells her “Please calm down.” Rhea responds, “Oh you think you can beat me, you tiny bitch? I’ll kill your ass right now!” Zelina eagerly accepts the challenge and runs into the ring. Rhea begins to stomp Zelina as the LWO runs into the ring to bring the fight to Judgement Day. The factions brawl in and out of the ring. Towards the end, Dominic, Rhea, and Zelina are in the ring. Zelina is doing all she can to try to knock down Rhea. She hits the ropes when Dominic stands in front of her. She smacks Dominic, but this gives Rhea time to hit her with the Riptide. She then lays on top of Zelina as Dominic counts.. 1, 2, 3…
On next week’s Smackdown, Zelina is seen backstage talking to Adam Pearce. She asks Adam for a match against Rhea at Backlash. He looks at her and says, “Zelina, I don’t want you to take offense to this, but I want the best matches possible on this card and I don’t know if you’re there yet.” Zelina looks at him and says, “What do I have to do?” He says, “I’ll give you a couple matches against the best women Smackdown has to offer. If you win them, you may have a chance to fight Rhea.”
Later that night, Zelina faces Natalya. In a slow technical match, where Natalya controls the pace, Zelina is able to break out of the Sharpshooter and win the match with a rollup. Rhea Ripley then comes out and says, “Natalya is not on my level. Nobody gives a shit if you beat her!”
On the next week’s Smackdown, Adam Pearce knocks on the LWO’s locker room. He peeks his head in and says, “Zelina, can I talk to you for a second?” Zelina walks out. “I have a match prepared for you tonight and it’s Shayna Baszler. If you win this match, I may consider you against Rhea at Backlash.” She excitedly says, “Ok, I will try my very best!” and walks out to the ring for a match.
Shayna Baszler controls much of the match by overpowering Zelina, specifically targeting Zelina’s ribs. She goes for a Crossface Chickenwing when Zelina throws her into the middle rope and hits her with a 619. She climbs the ropes and hits a moonsault. 1, 2, 3… Shayna kicks out milliseconds after 3. But Zelina has won the match and begins to celebrate. Then Shayna snaps. She locks her in the Crossface Chickenwing. Zelina taps but it’s no use. Finally, Shayna lets go and Zelina is seriously hurt. The LWO run out to the ring to check on her as they go to commercial break.
On the go home Smackdown to Backlash, Adam Pearce knocks on LWO’s locker room door. He pokes his head in and asks for Zelina. Zelina is lying on a table against the back wall. Santos gets up and says, “Actually, I want to talk to you, Adam.” They walk outside, closing the door behind them. Santos grabs him by the collar and slams him against the wall. He says, “I’m sick of this bullshit. She was seriously hurt last week and you didn’t do shit about it. Whoever she beats this week will be her last opponent until Rhea Rhipley or I will kick YOUR ass!” Adam says, “Ok, ok.” Santos says, “Who the hell is her opponent this week?” Adam says, “Well, it’s Rhonda Rousey.” Santos stares at Adam and says, “Alright. I will tell her.” He then punches Adam in the face, knocking him to the ground. He walks into the locker room and closes the door.
Rhonda goes out to the ring first. She paces back and forth, like a lion stalking its prey. Zelina comes down to the ring, holding her ribs. Ronda immediately begins laying in forearms, viciously, over and over again. She gets her ready for the Armbar when Zelina rolls her up. 1, 2, 3… Zelina has shocked the world! The LWO come running out to the ring. They lift Zelina up on their shoulders, ready for one more fight. Rhea Rhipley then walks down to the ring. She says, “I hope you enjoy your celebration because it will be the last time you ever do it.”
Match
Zelina comes out to a massive ovation. Then Rhea Rhipley walks down to the ring, ready to fulfill her promise. Rhea controls the pace of the match as Zelina gets in short bursts of offense.
Towards the end of the match, Rhea has Zelina ready for the Riptide as she begins waving to the crowd. She lifts her up and Zelina reverses it into a Hurricanrana. Rhea hits the middle rope. Zelina then hits her with a 619 as the crowd is on the edge of their seats. She climbs to the top rope and hits the Moonsault. The crowd explodes. 1.. Michael Cole screams “Do you believe in miracles?!?”.. 2.. Rhea kicks out. Zelina looks devastated. She climbs back up to the top when Dominic Mysterio walks down to the ring. He says, “The 619 is my move! You can’t use it!” Zelina begins shouting at him when Rhea climbs up to the top rope and hits a Riptide. 1, 2, 3…
Rhea wins.
Rhea Ripley retains in 10 minutes
LWO(Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar) and Bad Bunny vs The Judgement Day
Build
(Smackdown after Mania was detailed in the Zelina vs Rhea build).
On next week’s Raw, Bad Bunny opens the show. He is interrupted by the Judgement Day. Dominic blames him for his loss at Mania. Dominic says, “In prison, we don’t take being screwed lightly.” Bad Bunny then punches Dominic to the ground. Finn then runs at Bad Bunny who kicks him in the balls. Then, Damion Priest stares at Bad Bunny and says, “We’re amigos.” He grabs Bad Bunny by the neck and hits him with the Wrong SIde of Heaven Choke Slam. He pulls Bunny out of the ring and hits him with another choke slam, this time through an announce table. He tries to do it through the 2nd announce table when the LWO run down to the ring. Damion slowly walks off through the crowd as the show goes to commercial break.
On that week’s Smackdown, the Judgement Day are seen meeting backstage. Later on in the show, the camera frantically cuts backstage, showing a bloodied Joaquin Wilde. The LWO run to his aid while Damion Priest is shown in the background. A little bit later, the camera once again cuts backstage to show a bloodied Cruz Del Toro and the remaining LWO members again run to his aid as Finn Balor is seen in the background. Right before the main event, Madcap Moss is being interviewed when screaming is heard down the hallway. The cameraman runs to the scene where Rey Mysterio has Dominic by his hair. Rey throws Dominic into the wall as both Judgement Day and Santos Escobar run and begin to brawl. Finally, security is able to separate the two groups.
On the next week of WWE TV, the two sides continue to brawl as Damion brags about putting Bad Bunny in the hospital.
On the next week’s Raw, the two teams brawl again with Judgement Day gaining the advantage, thanks to a 3 on 2 attack. But then a masked man nails Priest with a lead pipe. Then, he does the same to Finn. He punches Dominic with his bare hand, knocking him down. The masked man reveals himself to be Bad Bunny who shakes hands with both remaining LWO members, signifying a match at Backlash.
On the final Smackdown, both teams prepare for the match. The match is made a no DQ match by Adam Pearce.

The two teams brutally beat each other in an all out brawl. Damion Priest proves to be a major asset to his team, giving them the slight advantage throughout the match.

Priest then choke slams him onto the floor leaving only Damion and Bad Bunny standing. Damion runs after Bad Bunny who ducks the clothesline and low blows him, bringing the giant to his knees. Gunther(C) vs Seth Rollins for the IC Championship
Build
On the Smackdown after Wrestlemania, Gunther and Imperium are standing in the ring. Ludwig says, “Nobody can beat…” and is interrupted by laughs. Seth walks out to the ring as the crowd sings his theme. He says, “Gunther, my friend, that title you hold in your hand was once mine. And I want to challenge you to a match.. at Backlash. Gunther nods his head in acceptance. Seth says, “ I have one question to ask you, Gunther.” He then turns around, slaps his ass, and says, “Why don’t you give me a chop here for good luck!” then laughs loudly. He is then jumped by Imperium, who beat him down.
At the next week’s Smackdown, Seth Rollins comes down to the ring in a puffy jacket, as the fans sing his theme. He says, “I will admit, Gunther, you got one over on me last week. But this week, I am prepared and ready for anything you offer. So come on out here, big boy!” Gunther comes down to the ring by himself and lumbers into the ring with his resting frown on his face. Seth says, “Why so angry, big boy? Did something happen? Did Ludwig forget to give you a kiss on the cheek before you came out here?” Gunther just stares at Seth. “Come on, what’s wrong man?” and Set slaps Gunther across the face and laughs. Gunther lays out Seth with a big chop across the chest. Seth hits the ground but gets back up quickly and Gunther holds his arm and turns around. Seth kicks him behind his knee. He then hits the big man with a Curbstomp. Seth grabs the mic and says, “Thanks for the trick, Brett.” He then laughs, unzips his jacket to reveal a steel plate on his chest.
On next week’s Smackdown, Gunther stays in the locker room at the advice of Ludwig because if they let him out, he may kill Seth Rollins. Seth is interviewed backstage by Cathy Kelly. Cathy says, “You seem to have woken a beast in Gunther. How do you feel about what you have done in recent weeks?” Seth says, “This is great. I want to get the absolute best of Gunther at Backlash. So I hope you are watching this, Gunther. I hope my beautiful face and my gorgeous drip make you even more angry.” He begins to laugh. All of a sudden, he is attacked from behind by Ludwig and Giovanni. Cathy Kelly screams as security runs in to separate the two from Seth.
On the final Smackdown before Backlash, Seth is off rehabilitating his injuries sustained from the attack last week. Imperium cuts a promo in the ring, talking about how Seth stands no chance at Backlash. They hand Gunther the mic and he says, “Seth, if you think you’re hurt now, I hope you don’t even show up at Backlash. Because if you do, you’ll never go home.”
Match
Gunther stays on the offensive throughout the match as Seth fights from behind. The crowd, firmly behind Seth, wills him to stay in it. Gunther connects with nine consecutive chops to signify the years Seth has been in WWE.
Towards the end of the match, Gunther lifts up Seth for the Powerbomb, but Seth fights out and superkicks Gunther, knocking him backwards. He then gets him with a second one, knocking Gunther down to his knees. Seth begins to lead the crowd in the singing of his theme as he walks circles in the ring. While he is doing this, Gunther gets back up and chops Seth right in the chest. But Seth stays on his feet, continuing to sing his song. He then jumps onto Gunther and begins laying punches into him. The two tumble out of the ring. Gunther shops Seth again and starts trying to get back in the ring, when Seth hops on his back, locking in a sleeper hold. Gunther begins swinging his elbows back at Seth as the refs count is at five. He then runs full speed at the barricade, turning his body so Seth goes through it. But both hit the ground. The ref’s count is now at eight. Gunther rises to his feet and begins to walk to the ring, but Seth latches onto his foot, not allowing him to go. The ref counts to nine. Gunther attempts to shake him off as the count goes to ten. The match ends in a draw. Gunther is furious. He grabs the title and storms to the back as the camera zooms in on Seth as he laughs.

I want to prove to Matt that he doesn’t need any friends either.” Later on, Matt Riddle is in the ring cutting a promo. Paul says, “My client, Solo Sikoa, is mad at you, Matt. He is mad because you embarrassed him and he doesn’t take kindly to being embarrassed. And my cousins did the same.” Sami and Kevin walk in the frame. “I’m not going to give you an ultimatum about who to cheer for, but I can promise you one thing. We won’t walk out to the ring in Gucci. We won’t be accompanied by the hottest rapper. And we…” He is cut off by Kevin Owens. “But Cody, I thought you were Gucci?” Cody replies, “Not anymore, Kevin. 2023.03.13 00:18 YoSoyElFlaco My Pauper Downshift wishlist

I’m sure we all can think of a few cards that I think should be downshifted to common so pauper players can build with them. Here are a few of mine:
W. [[Path to Exile]] This might be a bit spicy, but I think it’s merited. White is severely lacking in good removal in Pauper. Basically the only one that sees play is [[Journey to Nowhere]] which is pretty unimpressive against a [[swiftspear]]. It’s a bit odd that Azorius control is a staple in pretty much every format, but in Pauper, the most popular control decks are Grixis or Dimir. And the one deck that could be classified as Azorius control, Familiars, doesn’t really play white for removal, but for [[Sunscape Familiar]], [[Emphemerate]], and [[God-Pharoah’s Disciple]]. A mana dork, a value engine, and a bolt proof anti-agro card.
Now I think Path is the best choice compared to [[Swords to Plowshares]] or [[Prismatic Ending]] in that the downside actually forces you to make some interesting decisions. It’s a spell that scales negatively with your opponent’s aggression. Do I Path their swiftspear and risk giving a player who kept a one land hand the second mountain they needed to pound my face until it’s concave? Do I risk fixing my opponent’s mana by Pathing some unthreatening creature that they could go off with next turn? With Plow and Ending, the right answer 99 times out of 100 is to snap it off ASAP.
U. [[Miscast]]. [[Dispel]], [[Envelop]], and [[Annul]] are all narrow counterspells that stop something specific for one mana, no questions asked. [[Force Spike]] and [[Spell Pierce]] counter broader ranges of spells with some questions asked. Seems like we should fill in the middle a bit. The soft counters tend to be employed by tempo decks that want the game to be over relatively quickly so their counters being dead draws in the late game doesn’t matter, while the narrow hard counters are usually used by control and the odd combo deck to fight off targeted hate. Seems like a mid-ground counterspell might be good for pauper’s midrange decks.
B. [[Shrieking Affliction]] alright this one is probably a bit more niche. But I think it might be fun for Pauper to have an 8-rack style deck that tries to use discard and removal to disrupt the opponent’s gameplan before finishing them off with some sort of repeated source of damage. This might not be good enough to see play unless some redundant piece like [[tHe Rack]] is also added or one of the [[Hypnotic Spectre]] variants gets downshifted but I feel like it could be a fun strategy to try out.
R. [[Young Pyromancer]] This probably would have sounded crazy a few year back, but now I think young peezy might be underpowered for the format. Swiftspear and [[Dwarven Forge-Chanter]] are both better at pushing damage and benefit from artifacts. Pyro almost goes in the opposite direction, allowing you to turn your instants into chump blockers and expendable resources for a more value oriented red deck. Plus it’s not as if pauper isn’t equipped to answer this aspiring rapper and his entourage of elemental buddies. A single [[end the festivities]] shuts down their party right away.
G. [[Tarmogoyf]] This would obviously need a reprint, which might piss off some finance people. But I honestly think this is the least dangerous card on my list for pauper (aside from miscast). Pauper is a format defined by its lack of good threats compared to its answers. There are no planeswalkers, fewer 1-card engines, and creatures tend to be conceptually pretty simple. You’re not going to see any [[Questing Beast]] sized text boxes on a creature. And every creature that costs less than 3 mana has to answer one question. “Are you good enough to excuse being bolt-able?”
Goyf might honestly struggle to come out on the right side of that question. Fetches aren’t a given in his format. There are no 0-mana baubles to stick in the graveyard for free. Instants, sorceries, and creatures are the main types you can rely on in an out of the box deck archetype. If you want a 4/5 for 2, you’re going to have to work for it. But I think Goyf might be worth working for. And considering the power creep in Modern and Legacy, where a stocked graveyard now buys you an 8/8 flier for two mana, Goyf is starting to show its age. Perhaps it could find a new life in pauper.
Colorless. [[Bane of Bala Ged]] It’s been a perennial bugbear of mine that Tron, a deck known in modern for powering out huge beefy haymakers, in Pauper is at its best as a weird control deck that keeps getting mana-fixing artifacts banned. Torn should be green! Tron should be casting giant stompy doofuses! But sadly there aren’t a lot of good giant stompy doofuses at the common rarity. [[Ulamog’s Crusher]] is probably the biggest and best, but it suffers from being on the wrong side of the 1+1+1=7 equation. Bane trades being castable on turn 3 for being a lot squishier. Honestly, it probably won’t be enough to cause mono-green Tron to supplant the rainbow control and artifact combo versions as the premier way to make use of Urza’s ingenuity. But maybe it might make Timmy a little happier. And doesn’t everyone want to make Timmy happy?
Multicolored. [[Guttural Response]] This is basically an honorary green card, since red can already load their deck with 8 copies of a card that can counter a counter spell. But counters make Timmy sad. Do you really want to make Timmy sad? What has Timmy ever done to you?
So that’s my pauper wishlist. What are your’s?
