The concept of a 'surname' is a relatively recent historical development, evolving from a medieval naming practice called a 'byname'. Based on an individual's occupation or area of residence, a byname would be used in situations where more than one person had the same name.

2024.05.16 16:31 Alwaysknowyou [PC][2000s-2013] A 3D game about a cursed main character (a knight?) who could shift or see realities, into a dark side of the world, in Medieval time

Hi. I only remember the fact that we could choose reality we wanna be: the real world or the dark world. Not like we teleport there, no, we just start to see the world, but like the dark side of it. Probably we couldn't do that on our will in the beginning of the game
No, it's not Assassin's Creed
The main thing, I do remember a scene from the game that could guide to the name: We are starting to see the dark side of the world, and we see a boss (?) or the evil thing or the main protagonist of the game. Maybe we fought it for a bit or started to run immediately, I don't remember. SO, we had to get to the church! And when we got there, there was a cutscene that the main character opens the church's doors and saying "HA, you can't go definitely in here" or something similar, the main thing that the evil thing couldn't enter the church, so the MC said something about that. And if I remember correctly, as I said, we were seeing everything in dark tones, but the church's inside was bright or not dark themed as the world was before we opened the doors
I do remember it was Medieval times because of the church, plus we had a sword or we were a knight, something like that
So maybe that evil thing was a demon, and the MC was seeing the devil side of the world, plus seeing ET only when seeing the world like that? It wasn't following us, it showed in cutscenes, I guess, though I played only the beginning of the game
I am not sure it was a curse, but maybe the MC just was seeing the world like that? And maybe he couldn't change the realities on his own, but I remembered it like that?
We could run in a town, I guess, at least in the beginning
I am not sure the game got definitely a 3th person camera, but it's most likely. I don't really think it was from a first-person camera, at least in the cutscenes. The game wasn't cartoonish, looked like a real life for me at that time
I remember we were walking on the streets and could grab the grille small gates in the bottom and pull them up a bit so our partner (?) could help us? But I am not sure it's from the game I described above, just got a feeling
(Sometimes, there are so many comments to thank for guessing, so sorry if I won't thank you, just know I will see your comment and still thank you in my mind. In short, thanks in advance!!)

2024.05.16 15:04 commonparadox CIG and the Problem of Eroding Integrity

Before I get to the meat of it, I want to make it known that this is my own opinion and criticism. I am an early backer from when the game was just switching over from Kickstarter. Ever since then, I've had high hopes and aspirations for the game. In the beginning, the space sim market was completely dead and many were saying PC gaming was an afterthought. I believe this game is changing both of those actively and so I still retain high hopes - though sometimes it feels like its against my better judgement due to actions (and inactions) CIG has taken. CIG's integrity as a company has been eroding gradually over the years in my eyes due to deliberate choices the company has made. I'd like to give some examples.
First, CIG started with stretch goals for backers, which we blew through with record levels of funding. Unfortunately, many of those stretch goals have yet to be fulfilled. On the whole, that's understandable as some are fairly complex to do, but there are others which seem like they'd be relatively easy and routine that haven't been done, such as the crossbow FPS weapon. CIG has plenty of experience making and implementing FPS weapons by this point and they comparatively take little development time to complete. Why hasn't it been done? When's the last time we even saw a new FPS weapon release aside from different colorations of existing ones? This and other examples like this makes us older backers feel forgotten about and, at worst, used and stepped on toward larger audiences who didn't take as large a risk as we did by putting faith in you so early.
The second point I'd like to draw attention to is the incident in which CIG decided to charge money for virtual tickets to a Citizen Con stream. We, as backers, had entrusted our money and hopes to CIG only for the company to make an attempt to charge admission for us to see what was supposed to be our yearly progress report and showcase for a game that hadn't been released yet. Surely a reasonable person could understand why this was insulting to fans of the game. It was said that this decision was made to foster a larger and more spectacular Citizen Con for the fans, but over the years other actions that seem driven by marketing and financial goals have cast doubt on this explanation for me.
A more gameplay related point is that of the F8C and F7A Mk. II ships. Initially, the F7A Mk. II was not supposed to be available to players. The F8C was only supposed to be obtainable upon completing SQ42. Now both are released into the wild and in the hands of players. What happened to the conviction to make these ships special? A, perhaps, cynical application of Occam's Razor leads me to believe it was a decision made to drive sales and finances. At best, it was an easement due to the long time development was taking. Even if the later were true, the suspicion of the former will always lurk in my mind and that of others, I'm sure; further eroding trust in CIG's decision making.
My final example, and perhaps the more recently relevant one, is that of the gradual degradation of "Death of a Spaceman" (DoaS). The first idea and design lettedocument around the concept was incredible, but so much of it has been compromised. To start, the cloning system was implemented. To be clear, the cloning aspect was always a part of DoaS, but it being implemented without medical gameplay intervention was strange. While I can understand that it may have been a necessity for gameplay realities, it was still disappointing, and now it appears to be a permanent solution - at least from a backer's perspective. Now recently we've been told that all current ship medical beds will be able to clone players back into existence. This is despite some of those medical beds not being able to treat critical injuries. How can a piece of equipment that can clone an entire human being not treat serious injuries? Where is the consistency? I think the larger point, however, is a feeling of betrayal imparted unto some of the backers who are enthusiasts of, arguably, one of the most ignored professions in the game; the medics. I, myself, am not one of these people, but I feel for them as what little profession gameplay they had has now been gutted. Entire organizations had the rug pulled out from them in the name of convenience, sadly. It begs the question "why?" and the answer that looms as the most likely isn't a pleasant one - to push and sell a new medical vehicle. I don't want to look at it so cynically, but the timing and the sudden nature of the change from out of nowhere makes the consideration of such a greed induced motive hard to shake. Especially in a world and hobby that has been riddled with greedy companies making decisions for the bottom line over the quality of gameplay recently.
So, for discussion, I'd like to hear from everyone else. Are there other examples that have deteriorated your trust in CIG over the years? Please sound off and let your voice be heard. I don't think it's too late for the company to either correct the misperception or avoid further erosion with choices in the future. Also, from one long-term backer to another, I'd like to hear what Jared ( u/therealdiscolando ) has to say on this, given his unique perspective and also the fact that he is ultimately one of us. Additionally, I'd like to invite any input Tyler ( u/CaptainZyloh ) might have as our dedicated and ever-enthusiastic Community Manager that very obviously does his damnedest for said community. Lastly, I invite any of the developers to comment because I want this project to succeed. I want CR to succeed. This black cloud that hovers over this project for some of us could be dispelled with some communication around it and I am coming from a place of concern, not anger, and promise to engage in the topic in good faith. Lastly, and just for the record, I have no intent of turning my back on the project - rather I want it to succeed in such an explosive way that anyone who disparaged it is riddled with regret for missing the experience of staying astride of its development. I firmly believe this game and company has the potential to change the face of gaming forever.

2024.05.16 14:41 Agreeable_Gap_1620 The Dimension Prophecy: a curious story of Dwarf Fortress

On September 15, 2023 I decided to create a new world, a small world, this is how the dimension of the prophecy emerged, at first I didn't read anything in legends mode, I just started creating the fortress, I didn't even see the dwarf civilizations available.
I just looked for a place without much relief, with a river to make a moat, rich in minerals of the most varied types and embarked.
I always use the option to prepare my journey, and this time I used my ready-made build called “work”, as it was very complete for the type of fortress I planned to build and after checking that everything was ok, I decided to call the fortress Workmirror, the name was clearly in honor of the name of the build I chose.
Then I discovered that my fortress belonged to a civilization called Scarlet Sword and I started exploring more in legends mode to find out more about this civilization with a very stylish name.
That's when I found something that scared me, I found Workstands. What shocked me at first, what are the chances of there being a fortress with a similar name to mine?
Workstands was a fortress of the scarlet sword, my current civilization, its foundation was of extreme importance, as from its foundation many cultural productions began to be created.
Apparently Workstands should be the crown jewel of civilization, as they created a market, bridges, tunnels and even roads that connected it to other fortresses and even to retreats in the forest of elves who were allies of the scarlet sword dwarves.
But since its founding, the fortress has suffered from monster invasions and just when it seemed like it would achieve its glory, the fortress is abruptly destroyed in its eighteenth year by the Osman Diedfins the Lake of Ashes, a forgotten beast that emerged from the darkness.
Workstands for a long time was the only ruin in the Dimension of Prophecy, which in my head made me think that that fortress had some kind of curse. What justified the misadventures of the residents with troglodytes, ogres, bronze colossi, forgotten beasts, and what intensified this thought is that for more than half a century after its fall there was no attempt to recover it.
The coincidences don't just stop at the name and civilization, but the location of both fortresses they are practically next to each other, if it weren't for the cluster of mountains it would be a straight line journey from one fortress to the other. My real fortress looked like a “mirror” of Workstands.
It was then that I decided to add something to the history of the world. My friends and I created a prophecy, after all the name of the world is the Dimension of Prophecy, something similar could and should exist.
The prophecy we invented said that one day a group of courageous dwarves would try in their own way to resurrect the crown jewel of the Scarlet Sword and like all prophecies it would be ambiguous, as either they would have the same fate, or they would have the success that their relatives were unable to achieve. to obtain.
So I created my personal goals of taking Workmirror to its 18 years of existence to either repeat the workstand events, or overcome it once and for all.
The funniest thing is that the more I played Workmirror, the more it seemed like prophecy was part of the game. When the fortress arrived in the ninth year, a forgotten beast made entirely of fire terrorized the fortress.
Their threat was neutralized with few casualties. And that same year, the dwarves of Workmirror destroyed the necromancers' tower known as Inkglee, this event shook the social structure of necromancers on a global scale, leaving only four necromancers alive in the world.
Two years later another fire-breathing creature came to the fortress and this time it was successful. Workmirror burned it down, although it was not destroyed the damage was almost irreparable and the creature only did not destroy the fortress because a dwarf with an iron crossbow managed to kill it. stop with a well-aimed shot.
Each time the fortress's eighteenth year approached, it seemed more likely that it would fall like Workstands.
And finally we arrive in the year 117, after dealing with the fury of a Roc and facing the fire of the Theneli Dragon, the dwarves of Workmirror found adamantine, the legendary ore of the tales and myths of the dwarven people.
But the happiness was short-lived, at the beginning of the year 117, Kogan, a forgotten beast arrived!
What made everything more sinister was that Kogan was in Workstands and here he was, one year away from the prophecy coming true.
Needless to say, Kogan was hungry for dwarves, he killed another 50% of the dwarves in the fortress and for practically the entire year 117 he became king of the caves. It took Dragon Theneli, after long training sessions, to confront him and bring him the hard-earned victory.
The year 118 arrived, but the challenges only got worse, now there were underground invasions with monsters that devoured doors, Theneli expelled half of the invading force, but was seriously injured, a Bronze Colossus invades, yes the one who was also in Workstands, attempts and more attempted thefts of artifacts from the fortress Tavern.
The frenzy stopped at the very end of 118 with the incarceration of the colossus, the death of Theneli, and the defense of the fortress's caves.
The year 119 arrived, the prophecy was fulfilled, the Dwarves of the Scarlet Sword succeeded, Workmirror was now the long-awaited jewel in the crown of the dwarves of the north, coveted for its riches and requested by the scholars of the world for the vastness of its libraries. The last place the great dragon Theneli set foot on and fought to protect.
All Glory to the dwarves of Workmirror!

2024.05.16 13:56 TheLastKanamit [QCrit] KASURA: A TALE OF SURVIVAL, Adult Fantasy, 119k words, First Attempt (plus first 300)

Serendipity would have it that in the final stages of editing my manuscript I learn about the Berkley open submission call (thanks to u/cogitoergognome for that, by the way). Nothing like a deadline to focus my efforts! Plus, I've spent the past month or two analyzing and critiquing other people's query letters, and have learned an immense amount, so I want to fulfill my promise and offer up my own work in turn. A few questions I'd like you all to consider:
-Is it advisable for me to pitch my novel as having "picaresque elements"? It's the best descriptor I could come up with, given the novel's inspirations (for example, I would've put Michael Chabon's Gentlemen of the Road as a comp if it wasn't too old). Is picaresque still marketable at this point?
-The most iffy part of the whole query for me is the last blurb paragraph, which I've struggled with. It's mostly there to convey that the novel has no central "antagonist" other than the main characters' own awfulness, and to a lesser extent the banality of the world around them. Do I need to modify anything about this paragraph to get that idea across, or just get rid of it entirely?
-I was considering the idea of mentioning in my bio that I'm on the autism spectrum, but I don't want to make it seem like I'm using that as some kind of gimmick or angle. Is it advantageous or disadvantageous for me to mention it, or does it not actually make much of a difference?
All right, enough of my stalling. Ladies and gentlemen, sharpen your axes:
Dear Berkley,
I am submitting this query to your 2024 open submission call. I hope it is to your liking.
KASURA: A TALE OF SURVIVAL is a 119,000-word fantasy novel with picaresque elements, à la Candide by way of Conan the Barbarian. It concerns a trio of misanthropes on a fruitless quest for purpose, navigating both a brutal desert world and their own personal failings. It will appeal to readers of desert fantasy such as C.L. Clark’s The Unbroken and stories with the grim atmosphere of Hannah Kaner’s Godkiller.
Gera knows better than anyone: in the desert world of Kasura, the only victory is survival. A deformed hunchback enslaved from birth to a subterranean prison-city, only two things have kept him alive: his aptitude for languages, and an alchemical alteration preventing him from speaking any falsehood. Embittered by a lifetime of abuse, his sole desire is a peaceful life on the surface.
Opportunity arises when Ayyad, a young one-handed amnesiac prisoner, disrupts the prison arena’s gladiatorial battles with forbidden magic. Gera takes advantage of the ensuing chaos by recruiting both him and another prisoner: Vn’ab, an exiled noblewoman with unparalleled fighting skills and a remorseless disposition. Together they mount a desperate escape to the world above.
Yet freedom is only the beginning of their woes. Kasura offers no safe haven, and to survive they enter into the service of an army traversing the endless salt flats atop an immense mobile fortress. Just as they think themselves safe, they witness firsthand their hosts obliterate an entire town with terrifying incendiary weapons. Fearing they will be their next victims, they flee into the wilderness, hoping to reach a settlement at the other end of a continent-spanning network of caverns replete with forgotten terrors.
Above all else they are their own worst enemies. Gera is damned by his own tongue, always truthful even when it compromises his safety. Vn’ab refuses to confront her past misdeeds, struggling with complicated feelings about her religious authority’s declaration that she no longer has a soul. She nearly kills Gera when he mocks her for it. Ayyad is even more troublesome. Not only does he periodically sacrifice what little remains of his memory to fuel his magic, but also comes to believe that he is the reincarnation of a mythical godlike figure. Gera must appease each of their delusions and failings as all three desperately claw at the world, seeking survival.
Bio: I am a [profession] who has presented at numerous science-fiction and fantasy conferences, and has contributed to the upcoming publication [name of scholarly publication], set to be published on [date], 2024. I will also be presenting at [name of conference] on [date of conference]. I am a lifelong devotee of The Twilight Zone, and enjoy tabletop role-playing games, medieval history, and watching competitive Tetris matches.
Best Regards, [name]
FIRST 300:
A thin sickly ray of light framed Gera as he stood behind the black iron gateway, peering out at the arena. There a gigantic spider, the length of two men end-to-end, devoured the swiftly-liquefying remains of a fighting-man. The spider, nicknamed “Old Hairfinger,” had been concealed in a pit beneath the sands, and its sudden emergence was startling to some, comical to most. A minor diversion at the start of the day’s bouts.
A minute ago, its meal had been “Urvam the Hawk-Snake,” mighty warrior of the canyonlands and would-be revolutionary. A “hero,” some called him.
Such was the fate of all heroes: to be consumed. As if they were never born.
Gera watched, somewhat disinterested. He heard, or felt, rather, the chants of the assembled crowd above, vibrations pulsing through the stone walls. The sun-dwellers from the surface had come down to the Pit, paying their entrance fee with bits of metal or shapestone. There, in the huge alcoves above, they came to see the strongest and most cunning of the undercity satisfy their bloodlust. To fight and, frequently, to perish.
None were there to see Gera, of course. They wouldn’t be. He was only a purpletongue, as imprisoned as the rest of the undercity. He was born a prisoner, and, he expected, would die as one.
He listened to their jeers, delivered in a dozen tongues, all known to him. His knack for languages served him well. Little else did: he was a most unsightly thing, with his misshapen hunched back, his flat nose, his bulbous eyes, his wet, jagged voice, and of course his tongue, deep purple and ever-wriggling.

2024.05.16 13:39 glockpuppet A discussion on swords

This is intended to be a point of reference rather than suggestions for design, but with the number of medieval-based fantasy RPGs out there, I figured this might be useful.
Regarding accuracy, there may be points of contention among medieval enthusiasts, so I'll do my best to support my arguments
Sword Names
Naming conventions are likely not terribly important to many designers. However, if you want to separate your classification style from Dungeons and Dragons (who refer to mail armohauberks as "chainmail") and other entertainment media, this explanation may be helpful.
Specific typologies of swords are very scarce in medieval manuscripts, and the most common description of any sword, regardless of geometry, is simply called "sword". And though I have seen names like "longsword" and "bastard sword" used in Early Modern texts (Capulet: "What noise is this? Give me my longsword"), I haven't seen them in medieval texts, though that does not necessarily mean the terms were invented in the 16th century. Overall, I would still say "longsword" is a fair term to use in a RPG
However, swords that classified as a longsword in museums are typically of hand-and-a-half grip, which means they can be effectively used in either one or two hands, much like a bastard sword. As such, there is no consistent historical or academic distinction between the longsword and bastard sword. If you refer to every mid-length sword as a longsword, there is no contradiction here.
The "great sword" is particularly confusing. Again, a modern use refers to large two-handed swords often as a greatsword, and this is not necessarily wrong, but there is some complicated context here. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Gaels referred to their two-handed swords as "claymore" which translates to "great sword". However, the Tudor dynasty banned Gaelic in the 16th century, and later on, "claymore" was used to refer to Scottish short swords. In medieval manuscripts however, the phrase "great sword of war" referred to a sword with the geometry of a bastard sword (with a grip length of a hand and a half) and it was theorized by Ewart Oakeshott that its intended use was for "ponderous" mail-defeating blows on horseback due to its weight distribution. These swords saw use generally through the 13th and 14th centuries and fell out in favor of more specialized swords such as the longsword proper, which featured tapered designs more suited for defeating plate armor, which emerged as a full plate harness sometime near end of the 14th century
Weight
Regarding weights, swords are deceptively light, and it's been reported that historic swords in the Met's gallery have much better balance than modern replicas. Here are some weights listed for various swords:
(The Met appears to have stopped using the term "longsword")
Function
Before the late 14th century, swords typically had flat or lenticular blades and broad tips meant for hewing. Their increasing mass from earlier centuries implies that they were specialized for defeating mail armor. As such, in the 15th and 16th centuries, Irish and Scottish infantry were still wearing mail armor without plate defenses on the body, and their claymores featured broad blades of German construction, supporting the argument for defeating mail. Modern impact tests show that swords do a fantastic job of inflicting grievous injuries through mail armor, even though the sword doesn't actually cut through the links.
As plate armor increased in prevalence, swords with tapered blades, diamond cross sections, and reinforced points proportionate followed suit, and from what I've seen of surviving pieces as well as artwork, tapered swords and "estocs" dominated in presence during the 15th century. Medieval dueling accounts and at least one full contact sparring YouTube channel I've seen (Dequitem) demonstrate that thrusting strikes against gaps in plate armor such as the inner thigh and underneath the aventail or sallet visor are quite accurate and deadly, which contradicts a popular notion that swords were merely backup weapons, nearly useless against plate armor.
Further, those who might not deny the effectiveness of swords may still say that polearms dominated the battlefield, though this claim requires more nuance. Since set-piece, open field battles were often separated by years (3 years between Formigny and Castillon, 10 years between Crecy and Poitiers), many active knights would live without ever seeing a full blown battle! Instead, the most common military engagements were night raids, small scale sieges with ladders, and minor skirmishes and ambushes—all situations where the sword would prevail. Even in open battle, once unit cohesion started to break down, close-quarters combat with swords, axes, and warhammers took center stage, as is famously evident in the Battle of Agincourt 1415
It is also widely believed among medieval enthusiasts that swords are inferior battle weapons to the mace and warhammer, due to their ability to inflict concussive force through plate armor. Medieval fight reenactor "Dequitem" addresses this concept thoroughly in his response video to Matt Easton, where he supports his argument with clips of full contact combat with blunt weapons: https://youtu.be/TbiGZNNs2oI?si=PIPYUDPUsMFYkM2K

2024.05.16 12:01 RainbowGlitterChaos I don’t think Rhaenyra would make a good ruler

Okay, so, I don’t want to insult anyone’s opinion. This is just how I see it.
First, I don’t really think it was completely legal to make Rhaenyra heir. Or smart in any way. (That’s on Viserys, though.) Like, Rhaenys was not made heir by Jaehaerys I who was seen as THE ultimate ruler. Even though in the end it was the lords who decided that Viserys was to be king, Jaehaerys never considered the female line as heirs in any way. So, Viserys was only able to become King because of the sexist society and the laws stating at least between the lines that women can’t inherit. Which means that by Viserys making his daughter his heir - despite having a brother who should be preferred looking at the past and the general mindset of Westeros - he basically disregarded his own claim to the throne. If a woman is to be put before a brother if she is in the more direct line to the throne, then Viserys has no business ruling! He should have anticipated that the lords would not all merrily accept this after a majority of them voted for him and not Rhaenys who actually had more of a claim to the throne. I’m not even sure if it was entirely legal to make Rhaenyra heir - the laws basically go „women can’t inherit“ in Westeros, as far as I know. That’s the main difference between Westeros and Dorne, after all. So, if Rhaenyra was supposed to be the heir, she and her father should have worked on the laws. I get the „rule of exceptionalism“ and everything, but that’s about marriage. Inheritance is a more general subject - and they never made any effort to change the laws of inheritance. (***Spoiler: later in the book Rhaenyra even goes on to disregard a woman’s claim to her inheritance in favour of a little brother and still expects this woman to be loyal to her!***) So, Rhaenyra basically says that the rules that apply to everyone do not apply to her. And Westeros barely accepted this with the marriages but eventually those in favour of incest had dragons and those not in favour of incest didn’t have them. But in a war against her own family she can’t intimidate them with her dragon - her enemies have their own dragons. She never tried to empower other women either - Laena was older than Laenor. Therefore, she should have been the heir to Driftmark. With her death, this claim should have transferred to Baela. Instead, Rhaenyra insists on her son being the rightful heir to Driftmark even though she must know how most of the Velaryons think about that and how this looks to the realm („yay, I get to inherit everything even though I’m a woman! But you’re still going to be put aside for men. lol, sorry“). It would literally make no difference if she just married Lucerys to Baela and then she would still have Driftmark, just with a more legal reasoning that actually helps her position!
Then, her decision on who to make her lover. I get, you can’t decide who you fall in love with. But as a future ruler she should have controlled herself. Found a way to conceive children with Laenor or take a lover who looked at least a little bit like him - at least after Jacaerys was born. It was obvious that he was not Valyrian. She should have realised that it was not very smart to have MORE children with the person who didn’t look even remotely like her husband! And she could have made more of an effort to keep him away. Yes, he wanted to be with his children. Yes, they were in love or something. But this whole charade was not only dangerous to them - they endangered their children, Laenor and the whole realm and at least Rhaenyra must have known that! It was unfair to the children to put them in this position!
She hid away on Dragonstone. Her children didn’t have it easy. (And am I the only one who thinks Aegon shouldn’t have been the only one being called out for bullying Aemond? Even if it wasn’t their idea, Jace and Luke still participated. They laughed at Aemonds pain. And even years later there was still ridicule there!) Their father and step-father had just died. People called them bastards. As a mother it was right to take them out of that situation. As a future ruler it was pretty stupid, if you ask me. What did she think would happen if she reacted to the rumours about her children by hiding them? What did she think would happen to the rumours once she ascended the throne - that everyone would forget about them? That the people calling Jace „bastard“ would stop, as soon as he was the heir? I’m sorry, but that was really stupid! Also, hiding there, so the realm never sees her and other people do the ruling while her father decays slowly? Not the smartest move in my book.
She marries Daemon. Call them in love or whatever, first: their relationship always rubbed me the wrong way. Even if we forget about the incest-part, he was way older than her. He was handbook-grooming her. And even if he didn’t and they really loved each other or something - her father made her heir for two reasons: he felt guilty because of Aemma (as he should) and he really didn’t want Daemon as the next king. Nobody wanted Daemon as the next king. Her kin in the vale? Oh yeah, he straight-up murdered his wife there! (Also: why did Alicent „betray“ her by being married to her father even though she was groomed and forced into that position, but Daemon marrying Laena was okay? And it was not cool of Rhaenyra to openly flirt with Daemon on her wedding to someone else? And going out with him and trying to sleep with him while a lot of people could see?) A lot of stupid decisions here! And her argument is always „if I were a man it wouldn’t matter!“ And that’s true! And it’s unfair that it is that way, but it is. In Westeros women and men are judged differently. She just doesn’t understand that. She thinks that the fact that she’s a woman shouldn’t change anything (which it shouldn’t, but it does!) is enough to get away with anything. But there are different rules for men and women. And she never tries to change these rules. She just tries to tell the others that these rules shouldn’t apply to her for… reasons. Anyway, Daemon was everybody’s last choice for king. He was supposed to be kept far away from the throne. So, to Rhaenyra, the logical conclusion is to… marry him so he will be her consort once she’s queen. Yeah, sure.
Her children with Daemon. She finally gets Valyrian-looking children and names them after Targaryen-kings. The older one even after the conquerer. (And her half-brother, and that was just unnecessarily petty and a ruler should be many things, but petty is definitely not one of them!) If the war hadn’t been about her and she somehow would have become queen unopposed, the next war would have been between her sons: Jacaerys against Aegon. (Bastard against trueborn, people would say. Daemon would definitely turn against Jace to put his own blood on the throne.)
She just expects everything to work out! The lords swore allegiance to her. So, certainly, they will be loyal to her. Nevermind that oaths have never been broken or were lies in the first place (what was that about your mother and you being a virgin, Rhaenyra?), everybody has to follow her because… why again? Because Viserys said so? Sorry Rhaenyra, but kings have been opposed in the past. Especially those making demands their lords deemed unreasonable. You were on dragonstone for years. You were never involved in ruling the realm (and really, what did Viserys even think? He made her heir and never tried to involve her in anything!) or being close to the smallfolk. You believe being a Targaryen makes you better and everything. That’s not how you win loyalty. They don’t owe you their loyalty, you have to earn it!
She is not fair. Again, as a human being, as a mother, she was right in protecting her son that night on driftmark. Luke was a child and Aemonds eye had been an accident and even if not, she loved him and protected him. Good mothering. Bad being heir. Hear me out: She should have at least listened to Aemonds side of the story! He was ten. He had just lost his eye. He had claimed a dragon after having been bullied for not having one for probably years. And he was her brother. And she called for him to be tortured. She didn’t back down when she realised that her father would do it. She called Alicent self-righteous when Alicent really was, at least in my opinion, a really very lonely, very hurt and very desperate person who had finally reached their breaking point. She made sure that everybody remembered of that night that Alicent cut her, not that Aemonds eye was literally cut out or that she called for his torture or that she slept with her uncle on his wife’s funeral. She made the Greens out to be the bad guys and while they were not good, neither were Rhaenyra and her allies.
She makes herself the victim. Some self-pity is okay sometimes. But Rhaenyra makes everything about her. Everything is a personal slight. Who is not on her side unquestioning is a traitor and evil because she is a saint and perfect and the victim of all the evil people in the world! I get where she’s coming from. She lost her mother and so many siblings in so dramatic ways and her father was most of her childhood not a very good father. But she is not the Center of the world. She is not the only one who suffers in any way or the only one who deserves to be angry or wish for „justice“. But she thinks she is. She never once tries to understand other people or talk to them. Her best friend who is still a child just like her is marrying her father? I guess that is the worst of all betrayals. Nevermind that her best friend is like sixteen when her first child is born and Rhaenyra manages to forgive her father eventually but not the best friend who never wanted to be queen and tried to explain it to her? All in all, she is incredibly self-Centered and, well, growing up as a doted upon princess will do that to you, but it is not a quality that bodes well for the realm she wishes to rule over.
All in all, even without the war with her half-siblings, I doubt that Rhaenyra would have made a good ruler.
Also, I don’t really see her as that feminist or an empowering character. As is said, she only wants equality for herself, other women can be oppressed, whatever. Instead of probing those believing her to be unfit to rule wrong, she behaves like a petulant child and insults them or hides from them or goes to her father so that he can deal with them. She makes stupid decision after stupid decision without learning from them or accepting their consequences. She just feels entitled to everything she wants, no matter the danger she puts others in or the pain she causes. And I just don’t get her. When I watched HotD I of course first rooted for her - go, queen! But then I realised she is completely unrealistic! And I know, so are the dragons, but I don’t really see a woman in her position being the way she is. She is not a feminist icon or anything because she is like a modern (very bratty) woman put into a medieval world told to defeat the patriarchy! I think most of us would be more like Alicent in Westeros or Sansa Stark if we take the abusive parent out of the equation. We would listen to what we had been taught all our lives! We would follow the rules set for women or at least understand that we couldn’t ignore them entirely expecting them to just vanish because we didn’t like them! And that’s what made me not really like her - she is privileged. She was never raped or assaulted (like, say, Alicent). Her father had his flaws but he loved and at least tried to support her (unlike, say, Alicent). Her husbands both treated her with love and care (unlike, say, Alicent). Her children were written with actual shades and as good people instead of soulless monsters (why did they write Aegon that way? The only reason I could think of is to make Rhaenyra look even more like a saint saving Westeros from her inherently evil brother). She was old enough to consent ansage actually wanted her children instead of being forced to have them while she was still a child herself (unlike, say, Alicent). She had a whole support network being there for her and defending her interests (unlike, say, Alicent who only had her manipulative father…). And it’s good for her that she’s so privileged! But she’s aware of her privilege and actively uses it to gain advantages and hurt those she believes have wronged her. She’s aware of her privilege and still wants to be the poor victim.
I don’t hate Rhaenyra. She is an interesting character. But I don’t like her. She wasn’t even written well, I think - she’s the heroine even though I don’t find much heroic about her, and we’re just supposed to accept that and love her, at least that’s how I saw the show when I watched it.
I can’t see her as a good ruler in any way. „Maegor with tits“ might be a little harsh, but not that far off. She could have been awesome - overcoming the patriarchy, trying to find peace in her family and realising she has to fight her half-siblings, learning to rule, fighting stereotypes and discrimination, trying to find a balance between her personal luck and the greater good for the realm… she could have, at the very least, tried to change the laws to help more women. She could have accepted Baela as heir to driftmark or at least thought about it. But she never did. She never apologised for her own misdeeds (for example to Rhaenys who believes that she murdered Laenor and who she never gave much to believe differently) or tried to grow as a person. She just decided that she was perfect and the rest of the world had to change for her but she wouldn’t work for it (say, by empowering other women. This way it looks like she just wants power no matter what’s right or just and that, I’d say, is something she has in common with Maegor).
I’m sorry this is so long and I apologise if I insulted anyone or something, that was not my intention! I just had to get this off my chest finally and, just to be clear, this is my opinion. I’m aware that people think differently and that’s totally okay! I just wanted to express my thoughts on this.

Darkness is the place that instills fear in people, and no one wants to be imprisoned in darkness. But on the contrary, darkness can bring special sources of energy that only those who know how to use them can optimize it. Dark energy is becoming dangerous as forces are competing with each other in Shadow Fight 3 – RPG fighting. And you will be the hero that legend has told about the ability to save this world.

FULLY CUSTOMIZE YOUR HERO WITH DOZENS OF EPIC GEAR AND STYLE OPTIONS

A truly epic hero will need to have a distinct image. And players themselves will be able to customize according to their own style. Many different options such as a stealthy ninja, honorable medieval knight, or deadly samurai warrior will be chosen. With each direction of development, the hero will have a different fighting style. Your hero in this game will also be able to increase his strength through weapons and armor that you can equip.
  • Custom Hero: The game will allow players to choose their favorite hero style, from being a stealthy ninja or an honorable medieval knight to a deadly samurai warrior. Each person will have a unique strength that they can develop.
  • Epic Equipment: A huge collection of hundreds of weapons, armor sets, helmets, ranged weapons, and accessories are available.
  • Unique Style: Each hero will have a special color and pattern on their body. Show off your own creativity to make a grand appearance.

MASTER NUANCED COMBAT WITH THREE COMPLETELY UNIQUE FIGHTING DISCIPLINES

The game will bring its players 3 different fighting styles with 3 typical organizations. Choosing your development style with 3 organizations, including the Than Binh Hoi, the Imperial Court, and the Messenger Guild, will directly affect the final fighting purpose. Not only that, for each organization, players will also become separate warriors, including Ninjas, Legion warriors, and Dynasty fighters. If you take advantage of all three styles, success will soon come to you.
  • Distinct Styles: You can choose from three distinct styles: ninja, legion, and dynasty. Each style has a different goal. Ninjas use counterattacks, legion warriors use heavy weapons for defense, and dynasty warriors use mystical powers.
  • Combo Attacks: You will need to build your fighting strategy. The game will equip you with many different activities, including basic attacks, combos, dodging, blocking, throwing, ranged attacks, and more.
  • Shadow Powers: Shadow abilities are powerful weapons that you can use. Many interesting moves will be provided, but you must pay attention to your dark energy meter.

AN EPIC STORYLINE WHERE YOUR CHOICES SHAPE THE ADVENTURE

And in order for your players to feel the appeal of the battles, the plot will be important. At the beginning of Shadow Fight 3 – RPG fighting, you will learn that a certain evil force is trying to enter the dangerous Dark Gate. The legend has chosen you to be the one to prevent that story from happening. The future ahead is in balance between both forces. But you will need to really try with all your ability to save the human world.
  • Shadow Struggle: A mysterious evil force wants to unleash the dangerous Gates of Shadows. You are the hero, and fate has chosen to prevent this. The world’s future hangs in the balance.
  • Clan Motivations: Each of the 3 clans has distinct motivations. Understanding their histories makes you question who is right and wrong—shades of gray morality.
  • Story Branching: Your choices affect the course of the narrative and, ultimately, the fate of the world. You decide who to side with, which battles to win, and how to respond to enemies.

BATTLE ONLINE AND IN SPECIAL THEMED EVENTS FOR GLORY AGAINST OTHER PLAYERS

Many different fighting modes have been integrated to give your players outstanding fighting abilities. One of them is that players can completely fight other players’ heroes through AI control. In addition, the game will also allow its players to participate in various exciting event battles to receive rewards. But you need to be really careful with the Boss game mode because they will have terrible power.
  • AI Duels: Test your skills in 1v1 duels against other players’ heroes controlled by advanced AI for an authentic PVP feel without waiting.
  • Special Events: Limited-time events with unique rules and prizes encourage you to master new playstyles and strategies. Earn rare loot and status.
  • Epic Bosses: Events culminate in over-the-top battles against elaborate bosses with intense mechanics. Victory earns you glory.

THE INCREDIBLE 3D GRAPHICS AND SMOOTH ANIMATIONS BRING THE FIGHTING TO LIFE

The final feature, and also an important feature for all other factors to come true, is the graphics. Understanding this importance, the game’s producers have equipped Shadow Fight 3 – RPG fighting with a top graphics system. That’s why a graphics system with a cinematic style has been integrated. Furthermore, the animations are carefully developed so that the player’s battles are always smooth.
  • Cinematic Visuals: There are many different graphic styles for game makers to choose from. But after many considerations, the manufacturer chose the Cinematic style to make your fantasy world significantly more realistic.
  • Seamless Animations: For a fighting game, simulations of how characters act are extremely important. And the game has also developed a really smooth movement system.
  • Vibrant World: To keep players from feeling bored, many contexts have been provided. From peaceful bamboo forests to ominous temples are ready. With many diverse colors, it promises to bring great graphics.

2024.05.16 08:29 No_Pomegranate7134 [Elden Ring] Do you deem the German localization of the game excellent or terrible?

[I play Elden Ring in Japanese (as it is my native language), due to From Soft being a Japanese developer, so is Miyazaki himself.]
The most striking difference is within how they address the main protagonist (you as the player), as in Japanese he or she is referred to as 褪せ人 (lit: "verblasste Person") from the NPC dialog and cutscenes, however in the official German localization, it's: "Befleckten". In regards to the Japanese original, the kanji used is 褪 + 人 but 褪せ is from the ichidan verb:

褪せる

lit. trad: verblassen / entfärben Example sentence: 日光で看板の文字がせた。 (Die Buchstaben auf dem Schild sind von der Sonne verblasst.)

人 (Person)

Combine from 褪せる which is now merged as 褪せ人 [あせびと]
I have a rough list of the stuff that is named in Elden Ring, between the Japanese (original) and official German localizations of the game (Though I won't list everything, as it'll be too much).
Legendary Armaments:

遺跡の大剣 \4) Das Großschwert der Ruinen Trümmergroßschwert
*1 In Japanese: マレー家 ("Haus / Familie Marais" already states that it comes from a family of executioners who resided in the shaded castle.)
*2. The presence of Japanese 世界 ("welt") + 喰らう ("essen") then with a portemanteau of the Kanji 王 ("König / königlich") + 笏 ("zepter") forming the word 王笏 [おうしゃく].
*3. From Japanese: 大剣 literally means "großschwert" followed by the noun 接ぎ (lit: "Veredelung") with the word 剣 ("schwert"), as you can see the literal translation from the Japanese name insinuates that the boss used it during battle, as you already fought him, you obtain it after defeating him.
*4. From Japanese: 遺跡 means "Ruinen" (as in abandoned or in ruins) insinuating that the sword is created from ruined stone.
Bosses:

死の鳥 - Todesvogel
黒き剣の眷属 \19) Der Verwandtschaft des Schwarzen Schwertes Verehrer der Schwartzen Klinge
忌み潰し \20) Abwesenheit von Trauer Maltöter
*1. The Japanese title for Godfrey uses the kanji 王 ("König") since he is the elden lord, as opposed to German: they replaced that with "Eldenfürst" [エルデ王子] but the overall expression from the original Japanese is not connotated in German.
*2. The meaning of 忌み isn't conveyed correctly (in both Margit & Morgott) as it literally means "Trauernde" alone, but in the context of the game, it is connotated as "Abscheulichkeit" (from Japanese), which in no way it means "Grausame" So it is obvious that German just got it from English. Also, the presence of both Kanji 鬼 ("Oger / Geist") and 王 ("König") indicates their differences in hierarchical status too. Morgott bares the kanji 王 while Margit has 鬼 within his title, but in German (& English) the one with Margit is lost in translation.
*3. The word 軍兵 is a portemanteau comprising 2 kanji from ゴドリックの軍兵 implying that he was a soldier serving under Godrick at one point, as 軍 ("Armee") including 兵 ("soldat") forms 軍兵 (lit: "Kampftruppen") but this nuance from Japanese gets lost in translation.
*4. Fortissax's title in Japanese is a portemanteau of 2 kanji that have seperate meanings: 死 ("Tod") + 竜 ("Drache") forming the word 死竜 as he has the ability to inflict death blight towards the player, hence the presence of the kanji 死.
*5. In Japanese, Maliketh's title from his first phase has the word 司祭 ("Priester") instead of him being addressed as a cleric.
*6. The Japanese version of Rykard's title bares the kanji 君主 ("monarch / souverän") while in German it has been adapted to "Fürst" instead, but the intended meaning is lost from Japanese.
*7. The word 番犬 - literally means "Wachhund" while a portemanteau of 還 ("zurück") + 樹 ("Baum") are 2 kanji used together coining the term 還樹 - literally means amongst the lines of "Rückführung eines Baumes an seinen ursprünglichen Standort" and の is just a word particle present in Japanese.
*8. Elemer's Japanese title has 2 kanji: 鉄 ("Eisen") + 茨 ("Dornen") forming the word 鉄茨 (lit: "Dornen aus Eisen") saying that Elemer has thorns encompassing his iron armor. (Which is not conveyed directly in German.)
*9. The word 百智卿 beside Gideon's name is comprised of 3 kanji: 百 ("hundert") + 智 ("Weisheit") & 卿 ("Herr") - but 卿 is keigo as it is a very formal word (you only encounter this word with mainly Feudal Japan or medieval subjects.), the word 百智 literally means: "alles wissen" when combined, as the kanji 百 is used in a personified manner (as it is metaphorical) in conjunction with 智 ending with 卿.
*10. The word 写し means "duplizieren" followed by the kanji 身 ("der Körper (eine Person)") + 雫 ("Tropfen (Wasser)") as it spawns with the animation akin to a tear drop, and の is just a word particle present in Japanese, forming the word 写し身の雫.
*11. Astel's title in Japanese states 暗黒の落とし子 ("Der finstere Bastard") while the German localization went for Stern der Finsternis.
*12. 星砕き means "Sternenzerstörer" comprising from the godan verb: 砕く (lit: "zu zerschlagen / zerstören") and the kanji 星 ("Sterne") - coining the word from 2 kanji: 星砕き. From German, why did they change it to "Sternengeißel"?
*13. From Japanese, the ichidan verb 爛れる (lit: "Wunde / entzündet sein") is present in the tree spirit's title, while 樹霊 ("Baumgeist") is a portemanteau of the Kanji used 樹 ("Baum") - it's a fancier kanji since 木 is commonly used, but 霊 ("Geist") is also used in conjunction.
*14. Godrick's name in Japanese has the word 接ぎ (lit: "Veredelung") present, followed by 木 ("Baum") which is used here, as opposed to 樹 - found in for instance 黄金樹 ("Erdbaum").
*15. Maggie's Japanese boss title bares the kanji 亜人 (lit: "untermenschliche") to insinuate that she has human qualities but not considered a true human, due to her appearance.
*16. The presence of Japanese 乙女 ("Mädchen") mentions that its a female, followed by 人形 ("Puppe") but starts off with 人さらい (lit: "Entführer").
*17. In Niall's Japanese title, he is referred to as 宿将 (lit: "Generalveteran") states that he an experienced commander who has already endured battle, you even get the veterans prosthesis as a talisman after defeating him.
*18. Putrid Grave Warden Duelist's title in Japanese consist of the following words: 闘士 ("Kämpfer") + 墓守 ("Grabwächter") along with 腐敗 ("Fäulnis / Korruption") since he can inflict scarlet rot towards the player, as well as being in the catacombs, due to 墓守 being in his title.
*19. In Japanese, the word 眷属 (lit: "Unterhaltsberechtigte") implies that he's aa dependant (you can see him at the sanctum in upper Caelid), as he just remains idle until the player hits them which initates the battle.
*20. Again, the word 忌み is not expressed correctly, as referenced from Margit and Morgott. In this case, the addition of the godan verb 潰し can loosely mean amongst the lines of: "als Abfall zu betrachten" inplying this boss is outcasted.

*1. From Japanese: 学び ("Lernen") + 洞窟 ("Höhle") implies this is the pit you enter, as 学び indicates, you enter this cave to learn combat skills, as its a tutorial area.
*2. 深き根の底 literally translates to "Tiefgründige Wurzeln" but in German, they renamed it as "Tiefen von Tiefwurz" which is different. From the Japanese adverb: 深き > 深く ("tief") + 根 ("Wurzeln (einer Pflanze / eines Baumes)") due to the presence of large tree branches and roots within the area you tread on, followed by 底 ("Boden (einer Grube / eines Brunnens)") as you're underground.)
*3. The word 啜り泣き is derivatve of the godan verb 啜り泣く ("zum Schluchzen"), followed by the word 半島 ("Halbinsel")
*4. The word 王朝 ("dynastie") is present as it is passed down from family, the Japanese name refers to the fact that the area where you fight Mohg contains Miquella's egg, saying that Mohg is Miquella's half brother.
*5. 忌み捨て literally translates to ("Buße (gegen die Trauer)") implying that Mohg is down there, perhaps he was condmened to be underground where you can find him as a boss, as hinted by the word in Japanese: 地下 ("untergrund").
*6. The Japanese name is closer to the English release as indicated by katakana, but in German they renamed it as "Sturmschleier".
*7. The Japanese 火山 ("vulkan") clearly states that you're not far from the volcano, the manor is even close to it. In German, they could've used "Berg" beside its name to make it clear, but it was omitted.
*8. Japanese used 赤い ("Rot") + 獅子 ("Löwe") to form 赤獅子 ("Roten Löwen") ending with the kanji 城 ("schloss") as opposed to German, they just copied it from English.
*9. In Japanese, the kanji 砦 ("festung") is present along with 城, indicating that it is still a castle but at the same time functions as a fortress.
*10. 巨人戦争 ("Riesenkrieg") states that this catacomb hints at the war involving giants, while 英雄 ("Held") + 基 ("Grab") mention it's a memorial dedicated to the heroes.
Talismans:
日本語 Übersetzung aus dem Japanischen Offizielle deutsche Lokalisierung

戦士の壺の破片 - Scherbe eines Kriegergefäßes
友なる壺 \6) Gefäß mit einem Freund Begleitergefäß
カーリアの徽章 \7) Carians Abzeichen Carianisches Filigranwappen
*1. The word 恩寵 ("gnade / gunst") insinuates that it's a gift from the erdtree that inherits a boost in the player's stats.
*2. The Japanese 青い踊り子 describes the overall appearance from the talisman icon, akin to a dancer dressed in blue robes.
*3. 小瓶 connotates the shape of the talisman, as it is shaped like a small bottle.
*4. 細技 connotates "Zweig (Baum)" as the icon of this talisman is shaped like a tree branch, the word 犠牲 ("opfer") states that the tallisman will disappear once it is used, using that as collateral over losing all of your runes upon death.
*5. 輝石 literally means "schimmerstein" followed by 刃 ("klinge")
*6. The kanji 友 ("Freund") indicates that the talisman has a positive connotation (in a metaphorical sense), while 壺 ("gefäß") illustrates that it is a jar.
*7. 徽章 means "insignien / abzeichen" as it symbolizes that it belongs to the Carian family.
Note: It's difficult to convey directly from Japanese > German while keeping the original nuance in-tact, due to how different Japanese is to Indo-European languages.
The annotations within the original Japanese names are marked with * [numbered] there for further explaination, based on my own understanding to convey it from Japanese.
Since most translations into European languages are obviously from the English release of the game, therefore already loosing the intended meaning.

2024.05.16 08:28 HopefulSprinkles6361 Clams as Medieval Crimelords

Here is an idea I had for my medieval fantasy world. I’ve been thinking about this one for a while. A while back I was thinking about the longterm practicality of a pirate republic. The advice I got said the most successful pirates are those who have a functioning nation to work under.
The island of Liora may be a free place where there are no feudal lords. A place to get away from the likes of kings and clergy. In more recent years it has become a safe haven for criminal organizations and other convicts. People often half jokingly called a Pirate Republic.
Although it is a free place some amount of order would arise. That came in the form of a race called Jetrin who are basically giant clams. Just like clams they have a foot they can use to move but being too big to move on their own is generally considered beautiful. So they are heavily reliant on the other races for day to day care. I kind of wanted them to be like hutts without being giant slugs.
The Jetrin families run all sorts of businesses all over the world. Slavery, prostitution, smuggling, racketeering. You name they probably operate something similar to it somewhere. If not in Liora then maybe in a foreign nation. They usually invest that money in various mercenary companies and hired thugs.
What do you all think? Can a large organization like this really exist? Would clam crimelords be intimidating? Can you imagine a council of clam crimelords? Could these crimelords really hold onto their power in Liora? Did I miss something that may be vital to the defense of the island.
I heard of some pretty scary stuff regarding organized crime. One of which being a very generous pension plan but even this seems huge.

2024.05.16 07:14 Contactunderground “THE EARTH - A LIVING CREATURE!” This is the message of a brief video created from NASA satellite imagery.

“THE EARTH - A LIVING CREATURE!”
Joseph Burkes MD
I was a contact team coordinator for the CE-5 Initiative in Los Angeles from 1992 to 1998. “She is alive. She is awake and She loves us.” is the message that I received during of a kind of channeling experience that I had back in 1994 at Carlsbad Caverns New Mexico. It was an occurrence that Linda Irwin of the Unseen World radio show called a "contact download.”

I was meditating 600 feet underground. It just an hour before closing time. I sat alone in a small amphitheater cut into the rock face. With no expectations of results, I decided to reach out with my mind and try to contact with what I imagine is Earth Mother. She is called Gaia by many.

Soon two beings appeared in my mind's eye. Dressed in the garb of medieval pilgrims, I was informed that I could not interface with her directly, but through them a link could be established.

What followed was an "awake dream" that was so poignant because it combined striking visual imagery in full color with emotion and thought. The message that I “received” was as follows:
The Earth is like a beautiful woman, alive and awake and conscious of her reproductive power. Her love for all of her children, plants, animals, including us is profound. But humankind is now experienced by her as if we were a kind of pest. The rivers and oceans, her life’s blood, the mountains her skin and the forests her fur, are infested with a blight called man.

So, a cleansing has been called for and this brings her sadness. Brief images of devastation flashed through my mind during the download. Like a forest animal that rubs against a tree or dives into a lake to cleanse her fur, I saw earthquakes smashing cities, and walls of water, tsunamis, hitting the coasts.

But like a mother preparing to give birth, volcanic islands rose from the ocean floor to make new land, new homes for more of her beloved creatures.

I appreciate the work of those who created this brief YouTube video that still gives me pause to remember a strange bittersweet experience from three decades ago.

Additional Remarks:
Back in the 1980s I was part of a movement of scientists and physicians that studied the possible effects of an all-out-nuclear war in which thousands of megatons of TNT equivalent explosives might be detonated over our cities.

Hundreds of millions would be killed immediately and billions more from what is called "Nuclear Winter." That dreaded event would result as the ashes of burned cities blocked out the sun. Our calculations, however, indicated that in the southern hemisphere there would be many survivors. Civilization as we know it would end, but human life most certainly would go on.

We cannot destroy the Earth. Perhaps it is an expression of our limitless pride that makes us think that we can. As suggested by my "contact download" her capacity to generate new life is boundless.

Many contact experiencers, while in communication with what we imagine are extraterrestrials, describe being shown images of terrible environmental destruction. This type of encounter conveys the impression that the "aliens" (my wife Yael calls them "the whatevers" as she is not very interested in these matters) really do care about the fate of our planet.

I suggest that we are getting important wake up calls about the need to become better stewards of this jewel of a planet. Sometimes the message comes from medical doctors like my colleagues in The Nobel Peace Prize winning organization International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. Sometimes the warnings come from those "little grey guys with wrap around eyes" that enter our minds with what have been called inconvenient truths.

Comments:
Name deleted: I had a similar contact experience. On 12/12/12, I lay down to meditate, which I always do, before sleep. On this particular night, which was associated with the end of the Mayan Calendar, I immediately began to get a "download" of images. It was as if there was a slide show going on in my mind's eye. Image after image of nuclear holocaust, natural disasters, death and destruction. These images were interspersed with images of mathematical formulas...none of which I recognized consciously. Pages and pages of mathematical formulas. This went on all night long and I didn't get a wink of sleep. The following night, the same went on as soon as I closed my eyes to meditate. This time I began to telepath questions to whomever or whatever was sending me the downloaded images. The answers I got were: 1. That I was being shown images of past and possible futures, 2. That our earth and our species is in peril if we continue on this path of self-destruction, and 3. I asked about the math and was told..."Don't worry. You now have it and will understand it when you need it." This experience was a profound and "otherworldly" awakening for me, one that led me to begin exploring my relationship both with the earth on a deeper level, and also my connections with the RAHMA mission.

Joseph Burkes Thank you for sharing your personal contact experiences. I too had a download that involved mathematical equations that I couldn't understand other than they had to do with determinants of the contact drama and interactions between human action and a masterplan to open up our planet to peaceful contact with UFO intelligence.

2024.05.16 06:19 Affectionate_Emu_168 looking for "wario" and wolfvale (??) from lichcraft (2016-2017)

hey! this is such a huge long shot im going for right now, but im here to find two friends i met on lichcraft (a mc server) back around 2016-2017. i used to go by the name alex and i was maybe 11 when i was super active ? i hardly remember my old usernames ;_; i was in a big group of friends who all hung out and roleplayed on this one medieval-themed creative plot. i miss everyone from that era so much, but sadly i mainly just remember wolfvale (from germany i think?) & my closest friend at the time, "wario" from britain (dont want to use his real name lol) im not sure if this would reach them, or if anyone would recognize any of this info, but id really appreciate it if anyone responded w/ any idea on who these two are! ( key info: I WAS ALEX, HE/THEY, FROM AMERICA!! I USED TO ROLEPLAY AS THE FIRE GUY WITH A HALF SKULL MASK (HIS NAME WAS DRAVEN) !!

2024.05.16 05:08 YasuhoHEROse Nekomura Iroha medieval-like Song ( Lost media or 'Tip or my tongue'? )

Back in 2014, I got a lot into vocaloid and exploring them, I started digging for IROHA's songs.
I remember I had a big favorite that i downloaded in my phone, but don't remember by name, the info I have is this: - Original or Cover: I think it was original but not too sure! (Edit: Iroha was the ONLY vocal) - Intrumental: Cheery and positive. Included instrumental that reminds you of the forest, RPG, a bit medieval. - Quality: There was an "old" quality to it, the song sounds like one of the firsts made for the IROHA Bank if that makes sense! Like it was made in the 2010's - Video: I remember the video being a single image, very green (An image of a forest, or trees, leaves) and probably static or moving the same image. I think it had lyrics!
I convinced myself that it was a fever dream, i tried to find in youtube and playlists of IROHA but as i thought, it was almost like i dreamed of it and no one ever saw or heard that...This makes me very sad cause i remember the feeling that this song gave me, it was a beautiful song...
If anyone has any clue, i would appreciate it! I know it's not much but it's what i can remember. If you have any friends who know about vocaloid and know iroha or know that maybe its a cover, i accept any clues!

2024.05.16 05:02 slugma123 39 [M4F] Portugal/Online - Are you tired of ordinary run-of-the-mill men? Sex chats? Snoozefests of words? Being asked for endless photos time and again? Stop. You deserve better. For once, you can meet a truly cultured man with whom to have amazing dialogues about pretty much anything.

Hello, whoever you are on your side of this screen.
Predictability and ordinarity bore me. The idea of casual sex makes me more asleep than a Snorlax. I also don't want to be asked "How are you?" for the millionth time. And photos - well, one is always more than enough.
I'm sure I'm not everyone's cup of tea, but I don't seek anything ordinary, either. I'm just an author and researcher currently living in Portugal, and looking for someone new and truly unique to inspire me. We can talk about pretty much anything, plus you can learn a ton of super unusual but cool stuff if you're also into culture, literature, legends, stories, etc. What else can I tell you about me? Well, I'm often told I'm the most interesting person people have ever met, but let's go here for ten groups of facts about me and my life:
1- I've travelled to over 100 countries in search of knowledge, my favourite place being the streams of water and forests in the north of the Pyrenées, where I once placed my feet in the water and meditated for days.
2- I do not have a favourite book, but I do feel many marked my life. For example, Ovid's "Ars Amatoria" (as a teen), Cicero's "De Senectute" (as an adult), the "Ramayana" (as someone eager to explore other cultures), the "Nag Hammadi Library" (as a person interested in almost-lost religious texts), etc.
3- I once met a really amazing woman, we were together for 10+ years, we never married but we both knew neither of us was going anywhere else, I lost her in 2014 (and I don't want to talk about it), and I'm perfectly comfortable being single.
4- I've published over 80 books, between my real name and various pseudonyms, with the most sold having been top 100 on Amazon, and the least sold still stuck at under 10 copies (and it's intentionally supposed to sell very little).
5- In college I studied Computer Science, Psychology, French "LLCs" and Classical + Medieval Studies, but among my many passions you can also count Theology, Philosophy, Art, Mythology, Classical Music, Western Mysticism, Languages, etc.
6- I dislike social media and photos of people. I hardly ever take photos of myself or others, but I do have an enormous collection of photos I've taken around the globe, where I mostly tried to eternalize places and moments.
7- Apart from writing, I spend most of my free time as a volunteer for projects related to Culture, Children, and Mental Welfare. I also tend to donate to charity on a monthly basis, because I feel we should try to spread to others the good things we have in our lives.
8- Although I'm 39, I'm perfectly okay talking to much younger, or much older, people, because I feel they can also teach me a lot of things that I'm not necessarily familiarized with. And, in fact, one of my biggest pleasures in "real" life is talking to random people and learning new stuff from them.
9- I survived cancer and meningitis. I'm 99% okay, with the exception of a small physical problem most people never even notice.
10- I was recently "rejected" from a buddhist monastery for health reasons, since it seems my constant need for medication for an auto-immune disease would contrast with the simple life their monks need to have. So, yeah, that's mostly why I'm back online and posting this message.
So... if you are indeed tired of the usual messages and conversations, write me. Maybe you are indeed what I seek.

2024.05.16 04:27 Baronsamedi13 The Rot

Originally believed to be a biological virus the rot tore through the population of medieval europe on a level not seen since the black plague. Unlike the plague however those infected with the rot didn't die, or at least didn't stay dead for long. Rising from the dead almost immediately after succumbing to the symptoms.
After rising the infected would begin to waste away, granting the sickness its name. There skin would begin to slough off, their faces would become sunken and gaunt, their eyes white and milky, and their skin pale white accented by black veins. The infected barely register anything except for aggression towards the living, they do not eat, drink, sleep, or anything else save for slowly shambling towards and attacking the living.
A large part of the proliferation of cases of the rot was the misappropriation of resources trying to cure it under the assumption that it was something that could be cured naturally. Any years after the rot spread its true and horrible origin was discovered after much research and experimentation. An ancient cult was responsible for the rot, working with the demon known as Luvart they created an infectious curse one that would allow Luvart to exert control over all of those infected, in other words a contagious demonic possession.

2024.05.16 02:43 Greedy_Criticism I’m naming the protagonist of my medieval fantasy story “Brooklyn MotorSports”

I find narrative, thematic, and tonal consistency to be hard to maintain, therefore they must be unimportant. We can further surmise that anyone who cares about those things must be a miserable virgin.
Triggered, libs?

Bio-Timeline

3 BC - The heir to the Crag, Symond Westerling, weds Penelope Lannister in a grand ceremony at the sept in Lannisport. At the wedding ceremony, his younger brother Gormond very briefly met his future wife, the young lady Teora Reyne.
2 BC - The first child of their marraige, Jeyne Westerling, was born at the Crag. What should have been a good omen, however, spelled disaster. Not one moon after her birth did the Conqueror launch his glorious conquest of the Seven Kingdoms. Called up by his liege to do his duty and defend the realm from this pretender, Lord Walderan, his sons, and all their knights and levies rode to war. With their strength combined with that of the Reach, they had expected an easy victory. But never before had they seen dragons on the field.
Lord Westerling, as commander of the West's vanguard, was among of the battle's first casualties when a stray crossbow bolt felled his horse and caused the aging Walderan to break his neck underneath it. Had he only known the mercy he was spared. Symond, now Lord, did not halt the assault. Out of duty and mad vengeance, he led the Western forces further, even in the face of the three dragons that had, by now, taken flight. From his sick bed, Lord Symond often swore that he had been able to cut down four of Aegon's pikemen before the dragons came down upon them. Before the field erupted into flame and everything went dark.
1 BC - It was not for many moons after King Loren had already knelt to the Conqueror until Lord Symond woke again. Gormond had managed to rescue his older brother from the fire and organize as many of the Crag's men as he could for a desperate retreat through the rings of fire. He had saved hundreds of men that day, all men agreed. But whether he had truly saved his brother was in question. His face and body ruined by the grievous extent of his burns, a series of amputations were necessary to save Lord Westerling's life, but he was never quite the same man he had been prior.
0 AC - With the Conquest completed and Aegon upon his Iron Throne, life returned to some semblance of normalcy for many. But Symond's scars from that brief, glorious war would remain with him for the rest of his life. Kept on a near-constant supply of milk-of-the-poppy and dreamwine, he was in no condition to actually fulfill his duties as a lord. Lady Penelope and Ser Gormond decided to share the duties between themselves until Jeyne came of age.
1 AC - On one of his better days, Lord Symond, who had been unable to leave his solar for the past two years, finally managed to hobble to court, to the horror of his people. A man scarred and ruined, he nevertheless was determined to hear a few pleas of his people. Cautiously optimistic, Lord Westerling's mood soured when his daughter, whom he had previously hoped to hide the extent of his deformities, screamed and ran out of the room when she saw, "A monster on my father's throne!" Court soon adjourned, and Lord Symond, for the first time in years, went to bed with his wife.
2 AC - A small miracle of sorts touched the house with Penelope's birth of the twin boys Lyle and Jon. The knowledge that he had an heir had brought some joy back to the house and even to Symond himself, but his condition would only deteriorate as the years went on. Continually tended to by Lady Penelope, his lordship would remain largely sedated and absent from the lives of his children as they grew.
5 AC - Not all was morosity and gloom, however. Ser Gormond Westerling would meet Lady Teora Reyne at a small tourney in Feastfires, asking for her favor before his joust and talking to her at much greater length at the feast later that night, soon starting their brief and intense courtship. They would wed some moons later, eventually having two children of their own, Stafford and Eleyna.
7 AC - With the Stranger knocking at his door, Lord Westerling called his family to his solar one final time. The family that he had tried his very best to shield from him by self-imposed isolation and the endless reading of old histories and holy books. He wore a mask of fused seashells as he told his children of his pride in them, of his hope that they would carry on without him. But before he died, he insisted that his heir take one final parting gift from him. At that, Lord Symond removed his seashell mask, gave it to his five-year-old heir and said, "Boy. Look at me. This is what those silver-haired freaks and their demon abominations have wrought! Guard yourself well... lest they do it to you."
8-20 AC - Lord Symond was dead, but his parting words had left an impact on his children. As Lyle buried himself in books and lessons from Maester Boros, Jon practiced with mount and blade with Uncle Gormond, while Lady Penelope trained her daughter in courtly etiquette and saw to it that House Westerling maintained its close connections with the Lannisters, of the Rock and Lannisport both. In that time, the Westerlings soon found themselves inducted into the court of the Rock, the boys in particular became close friends to the young heir to the Rock, Lancel Lannister, and soon became regular visitors to the Rock and makers of mayhem in Lannisport.
Jeyne, meanwhile, happened across the widowed Lord Baelor Belaerys of Aegon's Rest himself at some tourney, feast or other, and soon found herself enamored of the dragonlord. Despite Jeyne's fears that her mother or uncle would forbid the match due to his status as a prominent valyrian dragonlord, they, to her great surprose, acquiesced. And so she married the Lord of Aegon's Rest in 16 AC and bore him his new heir two years later.
21-25 AC - As the Westerling twins became the constant companions of their good friend Lancel, "maturing" with the rowdy and party-loving lad every step of the way, they eventually each found themselves prominent places at court once Lancel ascended and became officially Lord Lancel. Lyle was named the Rock's Lord Treasurer and Jon as Lancel's Captain of the Guard. To this day, House Westerling are considered the Lord of the Rock's most tireless supporters, with the twins counting among his most loyal men.
