Brigham Young and John D. Lee, The Executor of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, Were Joined At the Hip: They Were "Birds of a Feather" - Part IIIB

2024.05.12 15:00 av-law Brigham Young and John D. Lee, The Executor of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, Were Joined At the Hip: They Were "Birds of a Feather" - Part IIIB

BRIGHAM YOUNG AND JOHN D. LEE, THE EXECUTOR OF THE MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE, WERE JOINED AT THE HIP
THEY WERE “BIRDS OF A FEATHER”
Part III - B
Disposal of Property:
Brigham Young gave cattle stolen from the emigrants during the Massacre to John D. Lee. What to do with cattle in the possession of Brigham Young’s militia (for whatever reason) was a decision Brigham Young was asked to make and made. The Indians were supposed to have ambushed the emigrants all by themselves, yet Brigham’s soldiers ended up in charge of the spoils. Those rewards included seventeen children of tender age later recovered from southern Utah Mormon homes, where they were placed after their parents were murdered. Initially, John D. Lee had charge of Charley Fancher. “I told the Indian to let the boy alone. I took the child up in my arms, and put him back in the wagon, and saved his life. This little boy said his name was Charley Fancher, and that his father was Captain of the train. He was a bright boy. I afterwards adopted him, and gave him to Caroline. She kept him until Dr. Forney took all the children East.” (John D. Lee, “Last Confession and Statement of John D. Lee,” p. 16-17). The possessions of the Arkansas Company were a literal treasure trove of the kinds of things urgently needed on any frontier. Much of what had belonged to those unfortunate emigrants, who were beautifully equipped, was placed in the hands of Phillip Klingensmith, a Mormon Bishop in Cedar City, Utah. Bishop Klingensmith had been a prominent participant in the multi-day attacks against the Fancher party at Mountain Meadows. He would later ignore his dreadful oath and put his life at risk to publicly reveal the disgraceful details of that great American crime.
The cattle assigned by Brigham Young to John D. Lee, after the massacre, were clearly those taken from the murdered emigrants at Mountain Meadows. “At Lee’s first trial [he was saved by a hung jury], Klingensmith testified, and reaffirmed his story under cross-examination, that he and Charles Hopkins had accompanied Lee to the home of Brigham Young while they were in Salt Lake City to attend the October Conference [in 1857], and that President Young told him [Bishop Klingensmith] to give the cattle to Lee to use for the benefit of the Indians and the mission. Klingensmith added that Young also cautioned them, ‘What you know about this, say nothing about it.’” (Cleland and Brooks, Diaries of John D. Lee, Vol. 1, 319 n 18). “Charles Hopkins, a former member of the Mormon Battalion,” settled in southern Utah. “Present at the Mountain Meadows Massacre [and one of the speakers at the council held at the scene of the crime], he was also with Lee and Klingensmith when they discussed the disposal of the emigrants’ cattle with Brigham Young.” (Cleland and Brooks, Diaries of John D. Lee, Vol. 1, 320 n 22).
“If there isn’t a hell, there ought to be.” (Baskin, Reminiscences of Early Utah, 149). Young was a recipient of a carriage stolen from the Mountain Meadows emigrants. It was used by the Mormon leader in Salt Lake City as late as ten years after the crime. R.N. Baskin: “One day in 1867, when I was walking up Main street in Salt Lake city with John Chislet, one of the persons who crossed the plains with one of the celebrated hand-cart trains, but who afterwards apostatized from the church, he pointed to a carriage which was approaching at a few yards distance, and said: ‘That man in the carriage with Brigham Young is John D. Lee, the leader of the Mountain Meadows massacre, and the carriage in which they are riding is one which the emigrants had owned.’ That was the first time I had seen Lee. The carriage was accompanied by Brigham’s mounted, sacred guard. The next time I saw Lee was at his first trial, and I recognized him as the man whom I had before seen in the carriage with Brigham Young.” (R.N. Baskin, Reminiscences of Early Utah, 138-39).
Young lied again, under oath in an affidavit, when he “denied any knowledge of the disposition of the emigrants’ property.” (Baskin, Reminiscences, 116). Brigham Young Affidavit, under oath, July 30, 1875: “Eleventh: Did you ever give any directions concerning the property taken from the emigrants at the Mountain Meadows massacre, or know anything as to its disposition? Answer: No; I never gave any directions concerning the property taken from the company of emigrants at the Mountain Meadows massacre, nor did I know anything of that property or its disposal, and I do not to this day, except from public rumor.”
It was claimed that “Young as Utah’s Governor failed to have Lee arrested . . . oversaw the church appropriation of the spoils, and allowed Lee and Haight to act in the legislature despite his knowledge of their guilt.” (Turner, Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet, 393). “Lee claimed Brigham Young told a Cedar City congregation that members of the Fancher party had persecuted the Saints and ‘killed our prophets in Carthage Jail.’” (Bagley, Blood of the Prophets, 249). With hundreds of head of cattle and stolen spoils, the Church’s acquisition, all by itself, puts lie to the claim that the Indians, and not John D. Lee and his minions, did the dirty work. “ . . . ‘Young had the benefit of the property of the murdered Emigrants and defrauded the United States’ by claiming it as his gift to the Indians.” (Prosecutor Sumner Howard informed the U.S. Attorney General “of his belief,” cited at Turner, Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet, 396).
The First Trial – Joined at the Hip:
George Hicks, a brave dissenter in a sea of Saints, was excommunicated for “sending a letter to the Salt Lake Tribune noting that Lee rode his horse ‘by the side of Brigham’s carriage.’” Hicks implied that Young shared in Lee’s well-known guilt. (Turner, Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet, 391). An 1874 meeting, after Lee’s excommunication, was the last time the old warriors met. For all of his life – John D. Lee’s life, at least into the 1870s – Brigham Young protected him from apprehension. Lee knew secrets which, if once exposed, threatened the life of Brigham Young, and the future of the Church he ruled from about 1844 to 1877, the date of his death.
Marshall William Stokes captured Lee, found hiding in an animal pen near his house in Panguitch. “Young was clearly worried about his own legal jeopardy.” He “asked Daniel Wells to find the copybook containing his September 10, 1857, letter to Isaac Haight ‘and put it into a safe where it will be secure and at hand if called for.’” (Turner, Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet, 391). It is not noted that he requested the same disposition for Haight’s September 7, 1857, Letter to him. He would later deny, under oath, that he could produce his letter to Haight, even after a diligent search, probably because it tacitly encouraged the Indians to do as they liked. The letter to Haight, which was never produced during Young’s lifetime – though he clearly knew exactly where it was – was produced in 1884, after his death. Isaac Haight’s September 7, 1857, Express to Brigham Young, the Mountain Meadows equivalent of the eighteen-and-a-half-minute gap on the Watergate tapes, has never been produced. That letter, perhaps the most important letter the prophet ever received, has been destroyed, concealed or suppressed (like the 1832 first and only Holographic Account of Joseph Smith’s First Vision of the Son without the Father “brought to light” from Joseph Fielding Smith’s office safe in 1965). The loss of Haight’s Letter bespeaks the absurdity of the claim, made by the authors of Vengeance Is Mine, the long-awaited apologetic Church-aided publication of the history of the cover-up, who say that they have received, unlike anyone else ever on earth, one hundred percent of the documents, many held from public view for more than a century by the less-than-transparent Church. Documents seen to pertain to the cover-up of that great American crime. When the Government tried to ascertain in the nineteenth century where the bear hid the honey, pages were removed from dozens of histories and documents, including some from the diaries of John D. Lee. And most particularly Haight’s Express to Young prepared and sent before the final solution at Mountain Meadows ever occurred.
The Second Trial – Brigham Young Betrays His Most Obedient Servant:
“Brigham Young gives unsuccessful order to prevent massacre but becomes accessory after the fact. He later tells participants that he approves of the massacre and lets them know he expects them to exonerate each other in [a] court of law. He publicly intimidates anyone who is inclined to give evidence against Mormon participants. He refuses to give federal authorities information that would implicate nearly all [of the] adults of [a] small Mormon community in [the] massacre and division of victims’ property. Then, when total denial becomes impossible, Young scapegoats three men through excommunication and arranges for participants to testify against (and jurymen to convict) only John D. Lee, Brigham Young’s adopted son and Council of Fifty member.” (Quinn, Extensions of Power, 755-56). Lee challenged the excommunication and asked for a hearing. Young promised him relief. In a letter from Apostle Erastus Snow delivered by one of Snow’s sons, that Lee “knew” had been “written by orders of Brigham Young,” Lee learned that Brigham Young didn’t mean what he had said about the excommunication. He had told his colleague, “I am your friend and not your enemy. You shall have a rehearing.” (Lee, Confessions, 265). The letter, however, told Lee, “You will not press an investigation at this time . . . . Our advice is to make yourself scarce, and keep out of the way.” (Ibid., 266). “When I read the letter, I knew I had nothing to hope for from the Church, and my grief was as great as I could bear. To add to my troubles, Brigham Young sent word to my wives that they were all divorced from me and could leave me if they wished to do so. This was the greatest trouble that I had ever had in my life, for I loved all my wives.” In consequence of Brigham’s advice, “eleven of my wives deserted me . . . .”
A verdict in a second trial, following a hung jury in a first trial, convinced Lee that Church leaders had selected him to be the “scapegoat.” “In Lee’s mind, Young had decided to offer his blood [Lee’s blood] as an atonement for the sins of all those complicit in the massacre.” “The verdict dissolved the fidelity Lee had long maintained toward his surrogate father.” (Turner, Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet, 394). Daniel H. Wells, a weasel, close to the prophet and the militia, traveled south to superintend the cynical process, reporting the facts back to his boss. The deceitful plan was intended to direct criticism (and punishment) elsewhere.
Lee insinuated Brigham Young’s guilt for the Mountain Meadows Massacre in a brief but fiery speech delivered to the crowd assembled to view his execution in 1877. Two weeks later, at the dedication of the St. George temple, Brigham Young worried that he too might be arrested “after Lee’s insinuation of his guilt.” (Turner, Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet, 404). Lee’s intransigence surfaced at the execution, and in his end-of-life account, Mormonism Unveiled. Brigham Young noticed, and was shaken by, his adopted son’s criticism. Approximately six months after the execution of his previously trusted servant, Brigham also passed the torch. Perhaps, in the halls of a Mormon heaven, a disentangled John D. Lee, who dismissed his previously precious Master on the day of his death with an embittered reprisal, may have something further to say.
As evidence of the final break between the two old warriors, as reflected in Lee’s end-of-life concerns, Young and Daniel H. Wells gave an interview to a New York Herald correspondent. Lee is dead, and Young and Wells can say whatever they like without fear of rebuttal. “Lee,” they said, “and a few other sinners took advantage of the emigrants’ boorish behavior and the unsettled state of the territory to gratify their desire for plunder.” (Turner, Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet, 397). It was an ultimate insult, the unkindest cut of all. A cruel and thoughtless postmortem. Young’s biographer, John G. Turner, noted, by way of response that, “No amount of friendly journalism or further statements by church leaders would have removed the dark stain the Mountain Meadows Massacre had left on Young’s reputation.” (Ibid., 397). There had been no punishment for two decades, and when the reckoning came, one fanatic paid with his life for the deaths of one hundred and twenty emigrants, men, women and children. Every other offender skated, avoiding responsibility for that great American crime. There was no impartial investigation. There was no ecclesiastical punishment for more than a hundred people implicated one way or another in the atrocity at Mountain Meadows. And until, and even until some time after 1870, Brigham Young protected his subordinate from efforts to bring even him, one man, to justice.
A Final Analysis:
John D. Lee, because of his privileged access to Brigham Young, was not just a local leader. He was Young’s southern Utah alter ego. As the southern Utah emissary of the supreme leader, his jurisdiction, like that of Porter Rockwell (another notorious enforcer with notches on his belt), may be seen as that of a deputy at large, as an agent without boundaries. No southern Utah leader – not Haight, Higbee, Dame, Klingensmith, or any of very many others – had John D. Lee’s “cojones,” or equal access to the prophet’s ear. The bonds between the violent leader, and his most obedient servant, were eternal. The thought that these two men were ambivalent about their shared objectives, at odds with each other and dishonest in their personal communications, one with another, is farcical. As is the notion that the sly fox was deaf and dumb and blind for more than a decade. Lee was Brigham Young’s strong southern Utah competence, the man among men who knew what his master required. Young’s harsh rhetoric, violent to extreme, George Albert Smith’s harsh rhetoric, equally ugly, Young’s incitement of the southern leaders and chiefs, his invitations to Indian allies on the northern and southern routes to steal the emigrants’ cattle, martial law, the Prophet’s restrictions on overland travel, and his indifference to his militia’s murders and beheadings of Indians and dissidents hardly bespoke tender feelings capable of ever being “harrowed” up.
After it became apparent to everyone that the old story (the Indians did it, the Mormons did not) had no legs, that longstanding “official lie,” told to everyone everywhere many thousands of times until 1869 was abruptly abandoned. “The Salt Lake Tribune later noted the policy change. For twelve years [1857 to 1869] their voice [the voice of the Church] was one of indignant denial that any Mormons were engaged in the affair.” By 1869, any person who believed that tall tale was deaf, dumb, blind or devious. “[After a few hesitating admissions in 1871], ‘the whole Mormon people [turning on a dime] changed front as suddenly as a well-drilled regimine,’ the paper noted caustically. LDS newspapers had furiously denounced the Tribune for accusing Mormons, but the denunciations were now aimed at Haight, Higbee and Lee. ‘The defense they then had for all the Mormons they now reserve for Brigham Young and the heads of the Church,’ the Tribune noted.” (Bagley, Blood of the Prophets, 270-71). To understand that ignominious policy change is to understand the central theme of the new book on the cover-up, Vengeance Is Mine. Blame anyone else for whatever you will, but protect the tyrant Brigham Young. The book, by faithful Mormon authors, with the assistance of the Church, is just the latest effort to put that burr on someone else’s saddle. The Tribune spoke the truth to the Saints in 1873. “If they were so badly mistaken in the former case, is it not just possible that they are mistaken as to Brigham’s innocence?” (Salt Lake Tribune, cited at Bagley, Blood of the Prophets, 271).
“Called to be the presiding elder of the branch at Harmony on December 22, 1861 [four years after the massacre], he [Lee] was sustained with the typical unanimous vote and invited everyone in the settlement to a great Christmas feast. Before the celebration ended, it began to rain. It would not stop for forty days . . . . The upper story of Sarah Caroline’s house collapsed and crushed two of Lee’s sleeping children, killing them.” “Lee, who saw the hand of God in everything, blamed himself for the catastrophe.” (Bagley, Blood of the Prophets, 299). “Great torrents ripped through the fields of Mountain Meadows and cut the trace of Magotsu Creek into a deep arroyo. The resulting disruption of the water table changed the valley from a luxuriant oasis into a sagebrush plain, a transformation that helped to inspire the local belief that God had cursed the place.” (Ibid., 250). “[Juanita] Brooks reported that 857 families had lived in Cedar City in 1857, but two years later only 386 were left. Official church records indicate the depopulation was even more dramatic, that only about twenty families remained in Cedar City in April 1859.” (Ibid., 242).
In the final analysis, this buck stopped with Brigham Young, and with the right-hand man attached to his hip in a Mormon temple. And to the shared history and experiences of two fanatical rascals. To those a disappointed George Hicks, a man who had weathered many storms, was heard to call, for the best of all good reasons, “Birds of a feather.”

2024.05.02 23:38 imnot_depressed Wanna learn about an indie game?! Read my info please!!

So, the game is called The Binding of Isaac, and it's about a 6y/o kid named Isaac, who also has gender dysphoria, trauma, and abusive parents. Isaac died while trying to hide from his mother, named Magdalene, who was possibly trying to beat him at the time. He hid in his toy chest and suffocated while his mother didn't notice.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is structured around the Legend of Zelda, meaning you get an item/pickup every room. There are also several references to Zelda in the game.
Items:
Some items are jokes, but some are important to the story, such as Isaac's D6, that was taken by his mother because some Christians think DnD is evil. Or Divorce Papers, that make Isaac look sad upon pickup, even making the comment "You feel empty." or Plan C, which is literally birth control, indicating Isaac wishes he was never born.
Family:
In the game, you'll notice several items labeled as Mom's, Dad's, or Guppy's. His mom, Magdalena, was a zealous Christian that would take away anything she deemed "evil" such as Gameboy, Tarot cards, and even some of his clothes. His dad, who doesn't have a name, was possibly kind to Isaac but left because of Magdalene, we can see that he and Isaac were potentially close in an ending where he and Isaac are creating the title screen for the actual game. Also his dad is the narrator. Guppy is Isaac's cat, who suffocated with him, we know that Isaac loved Guppy because there are several pieces of Guppy that are used as items. Items like Guppy's Eye, Dead Cat, and Guppy's Tail. There are other animal parts like Tammy's Head and Cricket's Head/Body, but we don't know if those are his actual pets, or just his imagination.
Enemies/Bosses:
Enemies in this game are probably reflective of what Isaac thinks of himself. The 7 Deadly Sins are bosses in this game, indicating that Isaac thinks he is greedy, lazy, prideful, or lustful. (for some reason) Most Enemies are disfigured, disgusting, and monstrous indicating that Isaac thinks he is ugly or a demon spawn. There are bosses labeled as Mom/Mom's such as Mom <3, which is just a giant leg trying to kill him. Another is Mom's Heart, which changes to a boss named It Lives!, which is probably another hint to him wishing he was never born. One last one I can think of is Mother, different from Mom, is a monster, both physically and metaphorically. The ending that plays when you defeat Mother goes as follows, Isaac is drawing on some paper, his mom walks in, "Isaac, what are you drawing?", Isaac tries to hide it, "Isaac give it to me now!", she grabs it and shows us that he was drawing the boss Mother, "Is this what you think of me? A monster?! If you want a monster, I'll show you a monster!", his mom shoves him in a closet and locks the door, screen fades to black.
Endings:
The endings are all up for interpretation, but some are rather obvious. Like an ending where Isaac looks into a mirror and sees a demon. But only one ending is canon, the Delirium ending. The ending shows Isaac suffocating in his toy chest and flashes of his memories. The ending results in him getting sent to a dark, grey place that I assume is purgatory.
Characters:
The characters are all Isaac playing dress up. The characters are all based on Isaac's death or Bible characters. The death characters are Blue Baby, The Keeper, The Forgotten, and the Lost, meaning just died, rigor mortis, bones, and ghost respectively. The Bible characters are characters like Eve, Samson, Cain, Judas, Jacob & Esau, and Lilith. All characters have a "Tainted" variant, which is a result of the Mother ending, as they are unlocked by playing as the normal version of the character and finding a wallpapered door. If you unlock the door, the Tainted version gets up from the ground and ascends.
Hope you enjoyed reading. I enjoyed writing it.

2024.05.01 19:46 Leather_Focus_6535 The 77 inmates executed by the state of Georgia since the 1970s and their crimes (warning, graphic content, please read at your own risk)

Here is the list that I wrote for Georgia's post Furman execution roster for my death penalty project. Like with the previous posts, the dates aren't a precise duration of time spent on death row, but rather an approximation of their earliest known criminal activities to their executions. Many of the crimes discussed in this post are also extremely horrific, and thus please read at your own risk.
As I finished finials yesterday, the remaining states, Missouri, Virginia, Florida, and Oklahoma might be released on a quicker pace. I'm planning on doing Missouri next, but it might be split into at least two separate parts due to the currently 98 executions that have taken place.
The currently executed 77 inmates:
1. John Smith (1974-1983, electric chair): Smith and his wife decided to kill her ex husband, 38 year old Ronald Atkins, and his 29 year old wife Juanita, when they learned that the daughter she had in their former marriage were beneficiaries of the Atkins' life insurance policy. The couple and another accomplice lured the Atkins' to their home with a promise of selling them a television set, and shot them both dead.
2. Ivon Stanley (1976-1984, electric chair): Stanley and an accomplice abducted Clifford Floyd, a 46 year old insurance agent, after they lured him into the accomplice's apartment. Floyd was dragged into a forest, beaten with a hammer, and tied to a tree. He was then shot and buried alive in a shallow grave. Floyd succumbed to a combination of blood loss and suffocation and a total of $234 was stolen from him in the attack.
3. Alpha Stephens (~1961-1984, electric chair): In 1973, Stephens shot dead 57 year old Louise Mercer while robbing a grocery store her brother owned. A year later, Stephens abducted Roy Asbell, a 49 year old minister, from his home with a gun he stole from Asbell's son. Asbell tried bribing his captor with hundreds of dollars in cash for his life, but Stephens simply snatched the money away, dragged Asbell to a barn, and shot him in the head. He had a significant rap sheet that included several armed robberies, prison breakouts, auto thefts, kidnappings, and burglaries, and was first arrested at the age of 16.
4. Roosevelt Green Jr. (1976-1985, electric chair): During a robbery of a convenience store, Green kidnapped the clerk, 18 year old Teresa Allen, stole $466 from the cash register, and drove away with his loot and hostage in her car. He then raped Allen, shot her to death, and dumped her body on a dirt road.
5. Van Solomon (1979-1985, electric chair): Solomon and his accomplice Brandon Jones gunned down 29 year old Roger Tackett while robbing a Tenneco store he managed. Ironically, Solomon himself was shot by an assailant robbing his grocery store some years before the murder.
6. John Young (1974-1985, electric chair): Young attacked 6 elderly men and women with bottles, lamps, fireplace pokers, and vases in their homes, across a single neighborhood. 3 of the victims, 85 year old Coleman Brice, his 83 year old wife Gladys, and 83 year old Katie Davis, were beaten to death in the assaults. Several variables such as jewelry and watches were taken as well.

The prosecution failed to convict him for the murder of DeJose on the grounds of self defense and the murder of Butcheson on the lack of sufficient evidence. His conviction for Callahan's murder is contested, as Moon and his supporters claim that a late hitman confessed to the killing.

With his relationship in shambles, Wellons' behavior escalated beyond the breaking point. According to prosecutors, Terrell broke into Watson's home, and beat and fatally shot him to avoid repaying the money. His execution caused controversy, as the defense attorneys claimed that the footprints at the scene were smaller then his feet, and that he was condemned only by what they perceived to be misused testimony from his cousin (that testified against him in exchange for a plea deal) and a neighbor (who allegedly claimed that they saw "someone else walk out of the home"). Those arguments were shut down by the courts, but embraced by anti death penalty activist groups and outlets. He was able to acquire visitation rights to their 2 year old son from the courts, and used that pretext to attack the family. They were all strangled to death with nylon stockings, which is why Gary was given the “Stocking Slayer" epithet by the media. Despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, including positive DNA tests, testimonies from surviving victims, fingerprints found on crime scenes, and semen samples, Gary still has a vocal following trying to proclaim his innocence. He had an extensive criminal history, which started with several arson, assault, and robbery charges as a teenager.

A third woman, 18 year old Latoyna Horn, was injured in the shooting. Young's two children, a 5 year old son and an 8 month old daughter, witnessed the killings, but were unharmed.
74. Marion Wilson Jr. (1999-2019, lethal injection): Wilson assisted Robert Butts, a fellow Latin King gangster, in the carjacking and shooting murder of officer Donovan Parks. He had a lengthy and very violent criminal history, which included the non fatal shootings of a Mexican migrant worker and a drug dealer during robberies, unprovoked assaults on a classmate and a youth worker, and an arson attack on an apartment complex. His friends noted that Wilson had a penchant for animal cruelty, and they reported seeing him shooting dogs on random whims.
75. Ray Cromartie (1994-2019, lethal injection): While robbing a grocery store, Cromartie and his accomplice shot two clerks, 50 year old Richard Slysz and Daniel Wilson (age unknown). Slysz died at the scene and Wilson survived with crippling injuries.
76. Donnie Lance (~1990s-2020, lethal injection): Lance broke down the door of his ex wife's, 39 year old Sandra, and fatally shot her boyfriend, 33 year old Dwight Wood Jr.. He then used the butt of his gun to club Sandra to death. According to court documents, Lance subjected Sandra to extreme abuse during their marriage, and reportedly kidnapped and tortured her with beatings, strangulations, and electrocutions on numerous occasions.
77. Willie Pye (~1985-2024, lethal injection): Pye's ex girlfriend, 21 year old Alicia Yarbrough, had a child with another man that he believed was his. Despite his suspicions, Yarbrough and their boyfriend pushed Pye out of the child’s life. In retaliation, Pye and two accomplice’s broke into Yarbrough’s ex boyfriend’s home to rob it, but found her alone with her infant. They abducted and robbed Yarbrough of her jewelry at gunpoint, raped her for several hours in a motel room, and shot her a total of 3 times in the head. Due to reports of him allegedly being cognitively disabled, Pye’s execution sparked some controversy. He was previously convicted of burglary.

2024.04.29 13:10 MediterraneanSeal A few mini reviews, part four

Part one here.
Part two here.
Part three here. TLDR, I decided to read 100 books within the thrillemystery/crime genres that are not overly recommended on Reddit and various blogs across the internet. My intention is to write a review for each of them here, in the hopes that others might be inspired to do the same or discover hidden gems among the works that have received little to no promotion or have fallen into obscurity.

19. Antti Tuomainen - Palm Beach Finland. A nice change. Different from the others on this list in terms of setting (obviously, Finland) and style. Some other readers pointed out that it has a Tarantino or Fargo vibe, and I agree. Definitely recommending.
20. Kate Moretti – Blackbird Season. An average disappearance mystery set in a small town, told from multiple POV-s. A teacher gets involved with his student, she disappears, his wife wants to divorce him, and so on. Nice writing, but nothing original.

21. Rob Rufus – Paradise, WV. This one was suggested by a fellow Redditor, and it was really good. I later read that the author was a screenwriter, and it really shows. A nice and short read with a great story; I read it in one sitting.
22. Ellie Monago – Confidential. You know that trope when there is this charismatic, handsome, powerful man who ends up dead, then three of his wives/mistresses/girlfriends show up, and any of them could be guilty of his murder? This is, obviously, the main theme of the book. This book is really great in terms of style, overall writing, and characters, but nothing special. Fans of the genre will love it.
23. Catherine Cooper – Chateau. This was a really excellent book in terms of characters, writing and pacing. I saw a lot of angry people in the reviews of the book, complaining about insufferable characters, but they’re meant to be like that. So, I'd say that the author did a great job. Also, there were several shocking twists throughout the whole book, I found them interesting and plausible. Not the usual tempo in the crime/mystery book, but good nonetheless, especially considering the terrible fad of cramming ten stupid twists in the five pages at the end of the book. Thank God I finally picked up a book that doesn’t do that. If you are a fan of characters that aren’t like cardboard cutouts, but totally flawed and, like, your average human being with their imperfections and various flaws and terrible personality traits, you should pick this up.
24. Paula Treick DeBoard – Here We Lie. This was also a solid book, and I figured out its quality only when I finished it. There is no big mystery here – two women were best friends once upon a time in college, one of them was an average small-town girl from Kansas, the other was from a filthy rich and affluent family, something happened, and they stopped being best friends. The readers are given enough clues to figure out what happened, and still, you will read it till the end, because it’s really skillfully written. Some people might find it a bit slow, but I enjoyed it.
25. Carrie Doyle - It Takes Two to Mango. Cozy mystery. The MC is an obnoxious person in a high position in a fashion magazine or something. She is laid off, she travels to a tropical island for work, there is a murder, and a hot dude on the island she works with to solve the murder. This might be a great book, but it’s a bit naïve and simple, with very cliche characters and story. I’m generally not a fan of cozy mystery series, so I can’t really judge here, but if this is a typical cozy mystery book, now I’m sure that I don’t like this genre.
26. Diana Wilkinson – The Six Guests. Whodunit mystery. It has a nice main premise: several friends have a Zoom meeting every Friday night and have a trivia quiz. This Friday is different, one of them – a journalist and a womanizer – asks all the others to find out answers to some very personal questions about each other. No one really likes this situation, and the journalist ends up dead. So, who killed them? Other than the seemingly original premise with the Zoom meetings, this is your typical whodunit, when everyone had a motive. Solid book, would recommend.
27. Peter R. Stoned – Girl Kidnapped. Mystery. The girl has woken up without memory. It turns out that she is the daughter of a local businessman, who has been missing for several months. Everyone has secrets, it's a small town, she has to remember, yada yada. This was probably a self-published and self-edited book, I have no other explanation. The idea can be worked with, I guess, but the story is unnecessarily long, there are dozens of tropes all over the place, the execution and overall style are very poor and almost childish, and it is quite amateurish. I really struggled to finish this one.
28. Thomas Enger – Inborn. Mystery/thrilleNordic thriller. Another whodunit, this time way better written. Two teenagers are found murdered in the local high school, we follow their classmate/boyfriend, who is accused of murder, as he unravels the truth. A bit cliché, but well-written, interesting, without boring and dragging parts, twists, and ending are plausible. Recommended.
29. Olivia Isaac Henry – The Verdict. Mystery/whodunnit. Another solid, well-written book you can read in two or three sittings. The body of a man is found, a woman gets a creepy message, and is later arrested with two of her former housemates for a murder. The story is told through flashbacks, which usually isn’t my cup of tea, but here it was nicely done, so I didn’t mind and found the book very interesting. My recommendation.
30. Jason M. Hough – Instinct. Mystery/sci-fi or whatever. This book’s blurb says “Twin Peaks meets Blake Crouch”, which is ridiculous, since Blake Crouch took inspiration from Twin Peaks. There is a small town in a foresty mountain setting, then there are people acting off, and there is a policewoman who arrived in the town several months ago and is still considered a bit of an outsider. Then people in the town start acting weirdly. A teen who spends his days and nights in front of a computer decides to go hiking at night and dies in the woods. A tourist who has a phobia of various animals stands with a grin on his face while a bear mauls him. And so on. People seem to act totally opposite of their natural instincts, and Policewoman Mary is determined to find out what is wrong. She does at the end, of course. The first half of the book is masterfully written, I loved the slow building of tension and great pacing. However, at the half of the book things start to drag, there are a lot of fillers with detailed descriptions, I felt that everything is crammed with descriptions of every minute detail and I struggled not to fall asleep several times. I knew that there would be some kind of sci-fi element, so I didn’t expect a realistic twist; however, it really didn’t deliver. I thought it was a bit lazy, but that’s just my opinion.

To be continued...

2024.04.29 08:51 flashy-was-taken What are you guys genuine thoughts on the ascension dialogue??

Because of personal experiences and i'm sure of many others too (isaac fans when they find their parents divorce papers: Tears up + Bone heart!) it probably hits hard for a lot of people. It feels like real genuine arguing and while, i've heard it so many times now it's easy to quote and laugh at, firs hearing it was shocking and tugged on my heart strings.

2024.04.14 22:38 iguerr The Godhead Complex read-through - Part Two: Believing the Belief

Other posts on The Godhead Complex read-through:

Prologue
Part One: Natural Selection
Part Two: Believing the Belief
Part Three: Direct Observation
Part Four:
Epilogue

Part Two: Believing the Belief

[Spoilers for The Godhead Complex, The Maze Cutter, and The Fever Code]
This was a nice Part, I think. This was when the plot really began to get going and you could begin to see where things would go, see the perspectives o fthe different nuclei of characters meeting, which for me is always exciting (I really enjoy this dynamic of the story starting with multiple POVs and they meeting each other as the story goes).
Something that I enjoy in this universe is how sometimes it feels like the author is playing with the idea of something having strong meaning (often related to mysticism) versus them being banal. For example, at a certain point, Mikhail is meditating and he does the Mudra gesture which, as the narration tells us, was taught him by Nicholas. You can sense how Mikhail sees that as something that holds some sort of special power, especially because of who taught him it. But in the real world, doing the Mudra gesture while meditating might feel like just a cliché.

Dialogue with TFC's Prologue

An excerpt that caught my attention was from a dialogue between Sadina and Frypan:
"Newt was always special. The kind of special you didn't need to look at anybody's blood to see."
"They chose everyone they studied back then for a reason, right?"
"They had their reasons."
—TGC, Chapter Eleven: Rash Decisions
In TFC's prologue we find out that WICKED was actually after Newt's sister Sonya and that he was taken too just because of how things happened, which caused the guards to kill both of their parents. Now, with Newt being a child that would be left alone, they had to take him, too. And one of the guards even say something about how he could be used to be one of the control group.
This shows us how sometimes WICKED had no idea what they were doing, or were improvising much more and had much less control than what they lead everyone (the readers included) to believe.

Mikhail's relation to the Remnant Nation

That really got my by surprise. Mikhail turning against the Godhead wouldn't be a surprise. But finding out he was actually the one behind the forming of the Remnant Nation had me shocked.
And it connects in an interesting way with Minho, cause the Orphan has an unexplained goodwill towards the Godhead, for no apparent reason. So finding out that it was a Godhead that created what Minho came to be was crazy.
Once he arrived at the Remnant Nation, he planned to do what he'd done every month for years meet with the Grief Bearers and in- struct them on the coming war. But this go-around, there'd be an escalation.
TGC, Chapter Nine: The Infinite Glade
The Orphans he collected. The Orphans he trained.
—TGC, Chapter Thirteen: Wild Animal
Mikhail knew, because he was the one to teach the Grief Bearers, who taught the Orphan soldiers.
—TGC, Chapter Thirteen: Wild Animals

Minho and Dominic's dynamic

These two were another surprise. Or rather Minho's apparent obession with Dominic. Full disclosure: I had a Dominic x Isaac fic going on as I was reading this book but Minho's inner monologue always mentioning Dominic and how Dominic had this irritating habit, or said this stupid thing, or whatever else Dominic was doing, made me change it to a Dominic x Minho fic. They were simply giving me too many material to ignore.
They'd seen few Cranks in the wild, and the most dangerous thing about the islanders were Dominic's various unsavory habits.
—TGC, Chapter Eight: A New Journey
"You're going to leave me with Happy?" Dominic pulled on Isaac's shoulder as if to twist his arm into staying. Good thing Minho wasn't paying attention to them. "You'll all be fine," Isaac replied. "And Happy isn't so bad. Try not to annoy him too much."
—TGC, Chapter Fourteen: Destiny Awaits
Minho thought about blowing the horn to get everyone's attention, but he thought that was something Dominic might do.
—TGC, Chapter Fourteen: Destiny Awaits

Dominic's character going further

But then I began wondering about Dominic's overall participation in the plot and there's something else I noticed about this character:
Dominic gained considerable more focus in this book in comparison to TMC. In TMC he is just a group member, there to populate the plot and build the background of Isaac having many islanders with him. But in this book, he is mentioned all the time and even has more active participation in some scenes. Different than, for example, Jackie, who remains just a group member (at least in my perspective).
So that led me to suspect something regarding Dominic's character. There's another suspicion that showed up during the read, but it related to a scene from Part 4, so I'll save it for the appropriate post.
Suspicion 1:
Dashner received backlash after claiming on Twitter that he felt Newt was gay and in this new trilogy we have a lesbian couple in the main characters group. Maybe I'm misinterpreting his intentions, but this have some relation to wanting to appease to the public and somewhat "clear his name" as not being a queerbaiter. In that logic, I wouldn't be surprised if Minho and Dominic ended up becoming a couple and that being the reason why Minho seemed so fixated on Dominic all along TGC.

Quote highlight

What a vicious cycle. A truly tired cycle. Men feasted on the dead flesh of animals only to become the dead flesh on which the animals later feasted.
—TGC, Chapter Thirteen: Wild Animals

Question for everyone

If you were an islander, would you want to leave the island, if you knew there were other communities out there and that there was a chance of a Cure? Or would you prefer to stay in the safety of the island where you won't ever even need the Cure to begin with? And why?

2024.04.12 14:15 Yurii_S_Kh How Jesus proved the dead will rise again?

How Jesus proved the dead will rise again?

Mikhail Nesterov \"Morning after the Resurrection\" Source: \"Artkhiv\"
Opponents of immortality Many opponents of Jesus belonged to the party which historical sources designate as "Sadducees". The main features of their doctrine Josephus Flavius considers that they do not believe in the immortality of the soul and "do not recognize any other decrees, except the decrees of the law ". In the Gospel of Matthew the dialog of Jesus with the Sadducees takes place on the same day as the dialog with the disciples of the Pharisees and Herodians about the tax to Caesar:
23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
24 saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
26 likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
27 And last of all the woman died also.
28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
(Matthew 22:22–33).
Mark's version differs only slightly from Matthew's. It concludes with Jesus' words, which are missing from Matthew: "Therefore you are very much mistaken" (Mark 12:18-27). Luke's version is textually closer to Mark's version at first, but Jesus' final words are more detailed and the end of the story is expanded:
34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
35 but they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
36 neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
(Luke 20:34–40).
The Old Testament on the resurrection of the dead In the Old Testament, ideas about the posthumous fate of people were not clearly systematized. The texts from Isaiah and Ezekiel, traditionally perceived in the Christian tradition as prophecies of universal resurrection (Isaiah 25:6-8; 26:19-21; Ezekiel 37:1-11), in their original context had more to do with the fate of the nation of Israel: through vivid images and visions, the prophets predicted the restoration of the "house of Israel" to its glory and power. In a later era, the idea of a general resurrection became more widespread, as the story of the seven martyrs of the Maccabees testifies (2 Macc. 7:1-41). The Old Testament makes no distinction between hell and heaven. The word Sheol ("sheol" - "underworld") indicates the posthumous destination of all people, regardless of their moral condition while alive. Sheol is "the land of darkness and the shadow of death," "the land of gloom," "where there is no device, where it is dark as darkness itself" (Job 19:21-22). It is under the earth (Gen. 37:35; Deut. 32:22); those who have descended there cannot come out of it (Job 7:10); they are not remembered by God, for they are turned away from His hand (Ps. 87:6); the inhabitants of sheol cannot praise God (Ps. 87:11). At the same time, the idea of God's presence in the underworld is found in the Old Testament: "Whether I ascend into heaven, You are there; whether I descend into the underworld, You are there" (Psalm 138:8). The idea of deliverance of the children of Israel from hell and death is also present: "From the power of hell I will redeem them, from death I will deliver them. Death, where is your sting? Hell, where is your victory?" (Hos. 13:14). By the time of Jesus, the doctrine of resurrection and postmortem retribution was quite widespread among Jews. In His sermons Jesus often referred to the theme of postmortem retribution, speaking about "Abraham's bosom" (Luke 16:22), where the righteous find rest, and "Gehenna of fire" (Matthew 5:22; 18:9; Mark 9:47), where sinners are tormented, about "eternal life" and "eternal torment" (Matthew 25:46). Addressing the subject of afterlife retribution was not an innovation, and Jesus' words lay on prepared ground. However, no Jewish teacher before Jesus had ever drawn such a clear line between the posthumous bliss of the righteous and the torment of sinners, such a clear connection between man's behavior in earthly life and his destiny in eternity.
Uncomfortable questions to God The position of the Sadducees was dissonant with the generally accepted view of man's posthumous destiny. They formulated their question with emphasized naturalism, as if they wished to emphasize the absurdity of the belief in the resurrection. Appealing to the well-known law of levirate (Deuteronomy 25:5-10), they project it onto the afterlife, resulting in a caricatured picture of it. They are sure that there is no answer to the question. Jesus appeals to what is immutable to the Sadducees: the Scriptures. He accuses them of being ignorant of Scripture and proves the reality of the resurrection by quoting Scripture (Exodus 3:6). This quote, as it may seem at first glance, has nothing to do with the subject of the resurrection. At least God's words to Moses from the burning bush had never been interpreted in this way before Jesus. However, Jesus often interpreted Old Testament texts from an unexpected angle, revealing deep layers of meaning hidden beneath the letter of the text. It is unlikely that his exegesis in this case convinced his interlocutors, but it was convincing to the people, and according to Luke, even to some of the scribes. Jesus' words that in the resurrection "neither marry nor are given in marriage" are often interpreted to mean that marriage is an earthly institution with no continuation in eternity. According to Tertullian, "Christians who have left this world are not promised the restoration of marriage on the day of resurrection". On the other hand, the same author states that the spouses will be resurrected "in spiritual union" and that "in eternal life God will no longer divide those whom he has joined together and forbidden to divorce in this life". According to John Damascene, after the general resurrection "there will be neither marriage nor childbearing".
Will marriage continue after death? In the resurrection, Jesus claims, people will be "like the angels of God in heaven." To the Sadducees, who said "that there is no resurrection, neither angel nor spirit" (Acts 23:8), this statement meant little. Christian tradition, however, paid close attention to it. Origen saw in it a confirmation of his theory that those raised from the dead would have bodies like those of angels: airy and radiating light. Methodius of Patara polemicized with Origen: the saying of Jesus, he believed, should be understood not in the sense that in the resurrection the saints will be deprived of bodies, but in the sense that the state of bliss of the saints will be like that of the angels. Many Old Church writers held the view that after the general resurrection the souls of men will be united with the same bodies in which they were while alive. At the same time, they noted that these will be transformed bodies - incorruptible and immortal. Just as a needle thrown into the fire changes its color and turns into fire, but does not lose its nature, in the same way, "at the resurrection all members will be resurrected.... and everything will be made light-shaped, everything will be immersed and transmuted into light and fire, but not resolved and not made into fire, so that there is no longer the former nature ".
Summary: Opponents of immortality, such as the Sadducees, believed that the soul was not immortal and there was no resurrection. Jesus answers the Sadducees' questions about resurrection and immortality by telling them that "in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but remain as the angels of God in heaven" (Matt. 22:30).

2024.04.11 03:25 PlentyNectarine Just finished Beach Read by Emily Henry... what was that scene at the end and why is no one talking about it?

I just finished Beach Read. I read Book Lovers about a month ago and adored it, so I had high hopes for this book as it seems to be her most popular.
It took me a while to really get into it, but once the pace started to pick up, I was actually really liking it. However, I cannot get over this scene at the end, when January and Gus are dancing in the rain after he talked with Naomi:
"She wants to get back together," I choked out [...] "I guess she and Parker split up a while ago [...] she said she'd been thinking about it for a long time [...] She asked me if I could ever forgive her. And I think I could. I mean, eventually [...] And then she asked if I could see myself being with her again, and--I can imagine it. I think it's possible. [...] She asked if we could make our marriage work [...] I never expected to hear her say that [...] And I don't know--I needed time, to figure it all out. So I went home, and... I just started to think it all through, and I wanted to call you but it seemed so selfish, to call you like that and make you help me figure it out. So I just spent all day yesterday thinking about it," he said. "And at first I thought..." He stopped again and shook his head sort of manically. "I could definitely be with Naomi again, but even if we could be together, I didn't think I could ever be married again. It was all too messy and painful. And then I thought about that more, and I realized I didn't mean it [...] What I meant is, I did mean it, about her and me. I didn't mean it about you.
And then he goes on to talk about why he wants to be with January and she's just... totally fine with the fact that he wasn't entirely sure about her.
I just... don't get it. Gus admitted to January about how he's pretty much been in love with her since college, they are basically TOGETHER at this point, they said "I love you" to each other, yet he goes on this whole spiel about how he wasn't sure if he wanted her or Naomi? After everything he and January had been through, he ACTUALLY had to think about if he wanted to stay married to Naomi (who LEFT HIM FOR THE BEST MAN AT THEIR WEDDING) or be with January (the woman he's been in love with for a decade)? I know he says earlier in the book how he didn't want the divorce and wanted to stay together despite her cheating on him, but this whole scene pissed me off and I just hate it. I see that it's kind of a mirror to January's dad, but the love triangle between her fathemotheSonya was NOT A ROMANCE. It was messed up and depressing, I don't want the main characters to basically repeat that exact thing.
I'm hoping my reading comprehension just took a vacation at this point in the book and I'm just misinterpreting this part. But regardless, what was the point of this scene? Why not just have him say that Naomi wanted to get back together and him tell her to kick rocks because he's in love with someone else?
EDIT: Thanks everyone for your responses! I love this sub and seeing everyone's different perspectives. Also thank you for not severely judging me for my emotional post haha. Can you tell I had just finished the book before writing this? The betrayal was fresh.

2024.04.06 03:26 tazertots What constitutes marriage?

I’ve seen this posted about before, but never with sufficient attention to the Word. This subject has huge implications for numbers of people, so my intention is to treat the topic with the care it deserves. What constitutes marriage in God’s eyes? Not in a legal sense. I’ll list out evidences for some trains of thought, and keep these short for the sake of reading. This is all from the best of my knowledge, but do not only listen to me, research on your own. Point out error when you see it. Some passages regarding the topic: Genesis 2: Adam and Eve have sex, and become one flesh. Genesis 24:64 Isaac had sex, married Rebekah. “One flesh” is repeated throughout the New Testament, including having relations with a prostitute. Jacob married Leah accidentally and could not undo it.
1 Corinthians 7:28 says if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. It gives two categories: wife and virgin. It does again in verse 34. It goes on in 1 Corinthians 7:39 to say a wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives. In the NT remarriage is forbidden (except in death or adultery).
Deuteronomy 21:10-14 says about marrying captives: “and mourn her father and her mother a full month; after that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.” She doesn’t mourn a husband, so I am assuming she is single, and she’s married just by having sex.
What about the marriages in the OT to non-virgins? In every one of them, the first husband is either dead, or dies, so they are eligible for marriage regardless. (Dinah, Tamar, etc.)
In Hosea, God told him to marry a prostitute. However, his children are called “children of whredom,” and his wife is called a “wife of whredom.” This indicates that the past sexual encounters make her future marriage and children whoredom. In chapter 3, the Lord tells Hosea to love a woman who is loved by another man, but there is no indication in the text that the woman is Gomer. It also does not call her “wife.” It says “you must dwell as mine for many days. You shall not play the wh*re, or belong to another man; so will I be to you.”
If we’re asking the question of whether marriage covenants need to have a witness, Malachi has the answer, when it says that God was the witness in Malachi 2:14.
In Exodus 22:16, someone sleeps with an unbetrothed virgin, and pays the bride-price for her to become his wife. If the father refuses, he pays the bride-price for virgins.
Exodus 21:7-11: ““And if a man sells his daughter to be a female slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do. If she does not please her master, who has betrothed her to himself, then he shall let her be redeemed.” Here she is betrothed. She doesn’t seem to be married yet or have had sex. “He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has dealt deceitfully with her. And if he has betrothed her to his son, he shall deal with her according to the custom of daughters. If he takes another wife, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marriage rights. And if he does not do these three for her, then she shall go out free, without paying money.”
In Deuteronomy 22:28 a man meets an unbetrothed virgin, “seizes her and lies with her.” He pays 50 shekels of silver and cannot divorce her, because he has violated her.
In Numbers 5:20, if she was an expected adulterer and “not seized” aka consenting, she drank bitter waters that would kill her if she was “defiled.”
What is the “defiled” state talked about in some of these passages? Does it make one ineligible for marriage, because one is married already?
In Deuteronomy 22:20-21 where evidence of virginity is not found, she’s stoned “because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by wh*ring in her father’s house. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.”
Was this marriage invalid/adulterous?
Hebrews 13:4 says “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.”
According to chabad.org “When the Torah was given, the Jews were instructed that in order to marry a woman, the man should "acquire her" in the presence of witnesses and then she would become his wife. As the Torah says, "when a man takes a woman and has intercourse with her." This taking is a positive commandment and is performed in one of three ways—with money, by contract, or by cohabitiation... and it is everywhere called kiddushin or erusin.” “Kichah ("taking," the formal acquisition) approximates the economic term kinyan and seals the marriage. Because this is the first stage in the process of creating a covenant of partnership, unions that are prohibited and void, such as incest, are never referred to in the Torah by the term kichah, but as she'khivah (sleeping together). In regard to almost all valid marriages, even those that are prohibited, the Torah makes specific reference to kichah.” https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/465162/jewish/The-Jewish-Marriage-Ceremony.htm
Although we are not under the Old Covenant, it can give us a picture of what marriage is like in God’s eyes.
Does marriage have to do with the intercourse itself, or does it have to do with the intent of the intercourse to marry?
In all of these things, let’s remember both grace, and accountability. Let’s remember Jesus’s words “Go and sin no more.”

2024.03.26 04:14 lesbianxena Bingo '23 - Trans authors & trans characters

This is my second year doing bingo, and I decided to tackle a theme this year! All these books either have a major canonically trans character (the main character, the love interest, or a POV character in an ensemble cast) AND/OR the author is trans. When it came to identities for authors, I selected specifically authors who have given significant interviews about it, or have that information easily available on social media, in press kits, etc. I did not go digging beyond that, as I want to respect the privacy of queer authors if they so choose. Please consider any information on author identity to be a non-exhaustive list, and please let me know if you catch anything I've gotten wrong :)
Please note mini reviews may contain mild spoilers - mostly in that sometimes the characters or their LIs are revealed to be trans midway through the story, meaning their presence on this list might be a spoiler in and of itself.
Title Within a Title - The Witch King by H.E. Edgmon - 3.5/5 stars Trans man MC, trans author. A trans witch must return to the fae realm to face his traumatic past and the royal fiancé he left behind. This was an enjoyable read, if sometimes 'not for me' in the sense that I struggle with YA that feels like it's going to be dated fast (i.e., modern day references, slang, etc). This is also probably the only "fated mates" story I've ever personally enjoyed, simply because it changes the dynamic if they're gay and trans.
Superheroes - Dreadnought by April Daniels - 3.5/5 stars Trans girl MC, trans woman author. A closeted trans girl inherits the powers of one of the most famous superheroes - transforming into her dream body as side effect. Danny is a delightful protagonist, and while I've never really been into superheroes before, this time around I understood why this can be such a compelling genre for stories about identity, society, and power. Thank you bingo for getting me to read books outside of my niche!
Bottom of the TBR - PET by Akwaeke Emezi - 5/5 stars Trans girl MC, nonbinary author. Jam has always been told there are no more monsters, until a creature named Pet emerges from her mother's painting and tells her there's a shadow lurking in her best friend's house. As you can guess from my rating, I LOVED this one. There is a very powerful and expansive story packed into a short book, but it never felt rushed. Loved the worldbuilding, the characters, and the incredible writing. I don't know what else to say other than man, I wish I'd read this sooner, and I will absolutely be checking out their other novels.
Magical Realism - Lakelore by Anna-Marie McLemore - 4/5 stars Nonbinary MC, nonbinary LI, nonbinary author. Teen Bastián protects the magical world under the lake, until Lore Garcia finds their way into that space and changes everything. Both the MC and the LI are neurodivergent as well (dyslexia and ADHD). This one is as much about self love as anything else. The writing is very visceral, and even as someone who struggles to visualize what I'm reading, I left with a clear picture in mind. I at times work with queer and trans teens, and I've added this to my 'go to' list of books to recommend them.
Young Adult - Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao - 2.5/5 stars Nonbinary author. The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle mecha aliens - but the girls often die from the mental strain. This one was, unfortunately, my biggest disappointment for bingo. I was SO excited for this one, both because of the plot and the selling point of 'YA where the love triangle ends in polyamory'. Unfortunately, this just really wasn't for me. It felt very surface level #girlboss for me, and some of the writing is jarring in that it's very modern despite the setting.
Modern Jobs - Finna by Nino Cipri - 5/5 stars Nonbinary author, nonbinary LI. When an elderly customer at a big box furniture store slips through a portal to another dimension, it’s up to two minimum-wage employees (who only just broke up!) to track her across the multiverse and protect their company’s bottom line. Hilarious, anti-capitalist, queer novella about traveling through space and time (in IKEA). It's whimsical, bizarre, heartfelt, and I can't wait to read the next one.
Published in the 2000s - The Red Tree by Caitlín R. Kiernan - 5/5 stars Genderfluid author. A paranoid author discovers an unfinished manuscript written by the house's former tenant, which focuses on the supernatural folklore surrounding the ancient oak growing on a desolate corner of the property. This was the hardest square for me given my theme, but someone on this very subreddit recommended this book! Unfortunately, I forgot who. If you're out there, thanks for the rec! I love creepy novels and unreliable narrators. I found this one very predictable, but that was actually part of what I enjoyed about it. The foreboding horror builds and looms throughout the book. Kiernan is a new to me author, and I definitely plan to check out some of their other works.
Angels & Demons - Yours Celestially by Al Hess - 4.5/5 stars Trans author, nonbinary main character (in an ensemble cast). Sasha has recently been resurrected, having died young from a heart attack (precipitated by addiction and drug use). Alongside the struggles of sobriety, divorce, and resurrection, he's plagued by the echoed feelings of his AI guardian angel...who has fallen in love with a soul in Limbo. I've read several of Hess' books now, and I love them all so far. He specializes in cozy, feel-good, queer sci fi/romance (and specifically, seems to enjoy plots where robots fall in love). This was another delightful read!
5 SFF Short Stories - Your Body is Not Your Body: An Anthology - 4/5 stars I believe every author involved in this anthology identified as trans or gender nonconforming, and many of the stories featured trans characters as well! Like all anthologies, this one has highs and lows. Overall, it's gruesome, frequently gory, and at times highly uncomfortable to read (in a good way). If you love body horror, which I very much do, I recommend this one.
Horror - Tell Me I'm Worthless by Alison Rumfitt- 4/5 stars Trans woman MC, trans woman author. Alice spent the night in a haunted house with her two best friends three years ago, and things have never been the same since. This book is...fucked up and brutal. I went back and forth on my rating so many times, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it, or who I'd recommend it to. The haunted house is very much secondary to the horrors of the real world in this one. Additionally, it contains a graphic rape scene, which is something I usually try to avoid in literature. That being said, this novel has definitely stayed with me, and I felt the catharsis big time by the end.
Self Published - Heart, Haunt, Havoc by Freydís Moon - 3/5 stars Trans MC, nonbinary MC, nonbinary author. An exorcist goes to a haunted house, where he falls in love with its owner. I remember enjoying this book; unfortunately, I don't remember a single thing about it now. I'll leave it at that.
Set In the Middle East - The Map of Salt and Stars by Zeyn Joukhadar - 5/5 stars Trans author. This story is really the intertwined tales of two young girls, set eight hundred years apart - a modern-day Syrian refugee seeking safety and a medieval adventurer apprenticed to a legendary mapmaker. The fantasy elements in this are very minimal, and they're only present in one of the two tales (the medieval one). That being said, this is a very visceral, visual, and heartrending novel. I actually cried at the end, which was embarrassing, because I was listening to the audiobook and actively out for a run when it happened. Fortunately, it was also raining, so I don't think my neighbors noticed.
Published in 2023 - The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White - 5/5 stars Trans MC, trans LI, trans man author. A trans autistic boy in an alternate Victorian era is sent to an all girls finishing school/sanatorium/horror show to ‘fix’ him. Also, he can speak to ghosts. Another one where the supernatural is far less horrifying than the horrors of society. Easy 5/5 stars for me, as this has so many elements I love - brutal and visceral body horror, queer resilience, queer anger, and hope.
Multiverse and Alternate Realities - The Affair of the Mysterious Letter by Alexis Hall- 3.5/5 stars Trans MC. A Sherlock Holmes retelling where Watson is a trans man, Sherlock is a queer woman, and also they're traveling through time and space. Honestly, this one was just so bizarre and FUN.
POC Author - Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee - 4/5 stars Trans man author. Disgraced Captain Kel Cheris is given a chance to redeem herself by teaming up with the famously mad, undead tactician Shuos Jedao (and by teaming up, I mean letting his ghost hijack a ride in her body). Honestly, I just had to embrace not understanding a single thing for half this novel, but that paid off! I felt like I was solving a puzzle the entire time, spurred on by how much I enjoyed the characters.
Book Club/Read-a-long Book - Dead Collections by Isaac Fellman - 2/5 stars Trans MC, trans LI, trans author. A trans vampire archivist falls for a grieving widow. This book was just okay, unfortunately. I wish we'd spent more time on the worldbuilding and the vampire lore, since that was the most interesting part of the book. I really didn't love the portrayal of butch lesbians (in that they were all either secretly trans men or transphobic, and sometimes both?). There is space for nuanced takes on the community, intersection, and interplay between butch lesbians and trans men but this...wasn't it. The writing is beautiful, but it couldn't save the book for me.
Novella - You Always Cry at Endings by S.J. Whitby - 4/5 Nonbinary MC, nonbinary author. Described as a " genrebent novella", which is probably more fitting than any blurb I could come up with. It's like a bizarre fever dream, and it's all in second person. This one is super weird, and the ending was a bit rushed, but I sure had a lot of fun reading it!
Mythical Beasts - The Hobgoblin Riot by Matt Dinniman - 4/5 Trans man MC (in an ensemble cast). Let me tell you all a story. Once upon a time, I read my first LitRPG book. It was Dominion of Blades by Matt Dinniman, and the main character was revealed to be a trans man. What a brilliant idea, I thought! Of course a genre that is about people entering VR or MMORPG inspired spaces would be a great place to include trans characters. After all, "trans person cracking their egg via video games" is a trope for a reason, right? Surely this is explored in many, many LitRPG books! The answer, of course, is that it is only explored in Dominion of Blades and it's sequel - The Hobgoblin Riot. I was devastated.
So, yes, this is a reread. It's not my first time rereading this book, and it won't be my last. I am not joking when I say my gf (who barely reads fantasy, let alone litRPG) knows Matt Dinniman's name because of how often I LAMENT that this series isn't completed yet. I know there are fellow Dungeon Crawler Carl fans on this subreddit, and I highly recommend Dominion of Blades as well. This is entirely for selfish reasons. Please, can we come together as a subreddit and peer pressure encourage Matt to finish this series someday? For me?
Elemental Magic - The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa - 4/5 Transmasculine MC, transmasculine author. This novel follows a nonbinary transmasculine pirate as they survive of the fallout of a devil's deal their father made for their life sixteen years ago. I find YA to be more hit or miss than other genres, but I loved this novel. It encompasses found family, the euphoria of transition, the complexities of the MC's gender identity, and tells a great narrative about piracy without overwriting some of the harm famous pirates perpetuated. The audiobook is narrated by Vico Ortiz, so it also probably helps if you have a huge celebrity crush on them (I do).
Myths and Retellings - Wrath Goddess Sing by Maya Deane - 3.5/5 Trans woman MC, trans woman author. Achilles, but she's a trans woman. I'm grateful for bingo, because I would've DNF'd this one otherwise. If I had, I would've missed out on the back half of this book, which I really enjoyed. The first half less so, as I found it slow, dense, and pretty clumsy in how it handled slavery - and also I really, really struggled with the fact that there are super horny dolphins in here for seemingly no reason.
Queernorm - The Black Tides of Heaven Tensorate by Neon Yang - 3/5 Nonbinary author. Several significant characters would be trans by our standards. In this world, all children are gender neutral by default, and choose/confirm their gender as they age. The story focuses on two twins, and a brewing rebellion. This was another book that was just okay, unfortunately, and I wanted it to be more. I have read time skip novellas and enjoyed them, but this one glossed over too much. I never felt invested, unfortunately, and I think this novella could've done with at least 50 more pages to flesh out plotlines and relationships.
Coastal or Island Setting - Odder Still by D.N. Bryn - 3/5 Trans LI, nonbinary author. A loner with a parasite bonded to his brainstem and a selkie take on an underwater steampunk city. Fun and fast paced - unfortunately, a little too fast paced (and insta-lovey), and it all kind of fell apart by the end. I think this book would've benefitted from more space to let the plot and the characters breathe. I'll likely still check out the sequel, as I'm attached to the characters now.
Druids - Jack of Thorns by A.K. Faulkner - 1.5/5 Agender author. A florist inadvertently summons a god and deals with the consequences, all while falling in love with an earl on the run from his past. Argh, I really want to rate queer books well honestly, but this one is just...not good. The LI refers to himself as "one" instead of "I" (as in "one does not have such a device"), and he acts like he's been locked in a basement for the entirety of the modern age. It's also boring. I would've DNF'd this one if it weren't for bingo, but unlike the pleasant surprise in the back half of Wrath Goddess Sing, I was just left wishing I'd found a DIFFERENT druid book to read.
Featuring Robots - A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers - 5/5 Nonbinary MC, nonbinary secondary character. A slice of life about a tea monk and a robot trying to make sense of their lives. Becky Chambers never misses! I'm certainly projecting, but I'm going to rec this one to all my fellow healthcare friends. Intentional or otherwise, Dex sure seems to me like they're suffering a serious case of burnout in their role as a caregiver (a job you love, and derive meaning from, that still feels completely exhausting at times? so much so that you have to disappear into nature to cope?). Anyway, I always finish Chambers' books feeling so comforted.
Sequel - The Barrow Will Send What it May by Margaret Killjoy - 5/5 Transfeminine author, multiple trans characters across the series. Punk fantasy about traveling anarchist turned demon hunter Danielle Cain and her crew. Killjoy is another author who I already know and love, so I was unsurprisingly delighted by this novella. The Danielle Cain novels are bad ass, imaginative, beautifully written, and marvelously fun. I highly recommend them. I would read countless books about this queer found family traveling through small town America to kick demon ass and evade cops together.

2024.03.24 01:27 LlawEreint Marcion's Antitheses

Marcion was a second century Christian, and son of the bishop in Pontus. He was a follower of Paul the Apostle, whom he believed to have been the only true apostle of Jesus Christ. He was the first to compile Paul's letters and designate them as scriptures, along with the gospel of Christ. In so doing, he created the first new testament bible.
Marcion saw discrepancies between the God who sent Jesus, and the god described in the Hebrew bible. He refers to this second here as "the creator". He recorded his thoughts in "The Antithesis". The document is lost to us, but can be loosely reconstructed from surviving quotes. Here is M. David Litwa's reconstruction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj8OV5mzvK8
A wonder beyond wonders, rapture, power, and amazement, that one can say nothing at all about the gospel or even conceive of it or compare it with anything. But the defenders of Judaism have snuck in to corrupt the one gospel, trying to fuse it with the law and the prophets to make a single body. From this Union of Law and gospel, they invent a fictional Christ.
Peter and the others from James did not walk uprightly according to the truth of the Gospel. In their wake certain false apostles perverted the gospel of Christ and these perverse gospels are accredited with apostolic names, but we know that our lord said "a good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a rotten tree bear healthy fruit."
The good Lord said "one is good: God the father."
Yet the creator affirmed "I am he who creates evils and behold I send evils against you"
The creator made the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil, and commanded Adam not to eat from it. Thus the creator, well aware that the first humans were going to fall headlong, himself put them on the edge of a precipice. And when humanity sinned, the creator became a judge, stern and savage
The female is immediately condemned to bear children in sorrow, and to be in service to her husband. Previously she had heard of the increase of humankind without sadness in the words of the blessing "increase and multiply." She had been intended to help the man, not for servitude.
Straight away the earth also is cursed, which had previously been blessed. Straight away there are thorns and thistles, where before there had been grass. When it was fertile with herbs and trees, immediately there is sweat and toil for bread. Though before from every tree there was livelihood without stint, and food in sure supply.
From that point on, humanity has bent down toward the earth, who before was taken from Earth. From that point on, humanity has turned toward death, though previously toward life. From that point of down they are in coats of skin, who before were naked and unashamed.
The wickedness of the old world was unjustly smitten by a flood and afterward by fire. It was unjust that Egypt should be stricken with tenfold chastisement, since the creator hardened Pharaoh's heart.
The creator unleashed bears from the thicket to devour little children, and avenge Elisha the prophet for the mockery he had suffered from them. But the good Lord says let the little children come to me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven. And he teaches that all who ever wish to be the greater, must be like children.
Moses says in the law "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth," but the Lord, because he is good, says in the gospel "if anyone slaps you on the cheek, turn the other one to him."
In the law it says "garment for garment," but the good Lord says "if someone takes your garment give to him your undershirt as well."
The one in the law ordered love for the friend and hatred for the enemy, while the Good bid us to love even enemies.
The Creator takes away foods and pronounces animals unclean; the very animals he elsewhere blessed. The Creator commanded burdensome sacrifices, annoying meticulous procedures and oblations as though he personally desired such things for himself. At the same time he claimed "what use to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? Who required these from your hands?"
The law has made all manner of regulations up to and including the care of cups and plates, so that men faced at every point with these legal teachings might never for an instant be occupied with the thought of God.
But God said "I will not drink the blood of bulls" and the Eternal God neither hungers nor thirsts. Yet the Creator inclined to the sacrifices of Abel and greedily smelled Noah's whole burnt offering.
"What pleasure is there either in sheep's entrails, or the stench of burning victims? To what purpose is the multitude of your services to me? I am weary of those solemnities, festal days, and sabbaths of yours."
The Creator ordered Moses as he left the land of Egypt, saying "Be prepared. Have your loins girded, your sandals tied, your staves in your hands and your wallet attached, caught off from the Egyptian's gold and silver vessels and clothes."
But our Lord the good, when he sent out his disciples into the world, says "Don't have shoes on your feet nor wallets nor staves nor two shirts nor cheap coins in your belts."
The creator forbids labor on Sabbath days, and yet, at the storming of the city of Jericho he commands the ark to be carried round during eight days, which include the Sabbath!
The Creator forbids the making of the likeness of anything in heaven and on Earth and in the waters, saying "you shall not worship nor serve them." But the image of the bronze serpent which this Lord afterward commanded Moses to make was an instance of idolatry.
"I will Smite" he says "and I will heal! I will slay," he says "and also make alive!"
By establishing evil things and making peace. He is fickle and inconstant in forbidding what he commands, and commanding what he forbids. The creator is capricious concerning persons as well as institutions when he expresses disapproval of men previously approved of, or when he lacks foresight in approving men who afterward meet with his disapproval. Here he either reverses his previous judgment, or is ignorant of those he will afterward make.
Saul for instance is promoted, but the Creator says "I regret that I have made Saul King!"
Solomon is rejected when he is in bondage to foreign wives, and in subjection to the idols of the Moabites and Sidonians. And the Creator admits error in respect of the Ninevites, for Jonah says "God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it."
The Creator did not know the location of Adam, saying "where are you?"
And when Adam says he hid out of shame for his nakedness, the creator asked whether it was because he had eaten from the tree, as though he was in doubt about it. But Christ knew the inner thoughts of human beings.
The Creator demands of Cain where his brother is, as though he had not already heard the voice of Abel's blood crying out from the ground. The Creator cursed Cain. And even though Cain wanted to wash out his sin by death, for a time the creator refused to let him die.
The creator descended to Sodom and Gomorah, saying "I will see if they are performing in accordance with the outcry reaching to me, and if not, I will know."
Do you see how from ignorance he is in doubt? Wanting to know. Do you see how the god of the law did not know what happened in Sodom unless he descended to see, and sent those to learn?
The Creator pointlessly and falsely swears by himself. What else could he imagine doing when he was unaware of the existence of any other God? And in fact was then and there taking a lying oath that beside him there is no other the god at all.
This "god" proved quite petty in his fierce anger when in his wrath against Israel, because of the consecration of the calf, he demanded of his slave Moses "leave me alone and I, outrageously angry, will destroy them and make you into a great nation."
Here Moses was a better person than his own god, praying to soothe and even forbid his wrath, for he says "do not do this, or else destroy me with them."
Out of all the many lepers in Israel, Elisha the prophet of the creator cleansed only one Namely the Syrian. Christ, by contrast, healed an Israelite whom the creator had not been willing to heal.
Elisha needed to use material water for healing, and it had to be applied seven times. Christ, however, healed by means of a single simple word. And it was done at once.
Elisha healed only one leper, but Christ healed ten by means of his silent power, by word alone.
The creator did not restore the sight of Isaac suffering from cataracts, but our Lord, because he is good, opened the eyes of many blind people.
David struck the blind and the lame with daggers when he attacked Jerusalem, but Christ healed the blind man who called him "son of David."
The Creator said "with ear you shall hear, and shall not hear." But Christ insisted "the one who has ears, hear"
Christ was giving back the hearing which the creator had taken away.
At the request of Elijah the Prophet, the creator sent a burst of fire to destroy one hundred men, but Christ rebuked his disciples for even requesting to send down fire upon the samarians.
Note the judges sternness and contrast Christ's gentleness when reproving the disciples as they call for the same punishment.
The Creator rejects Tax Collectors as outside the law, and unclean, but Christ as one hostile to the law chose a tax collector to be his disciple. The law forbids touching a woman who has an issue of blood. Christ not only permitted himself to be touched by such a woman, but he healed her as well.
Moses intervened in the dispute of the brothers, without being invited, and rebuked the offender "why are you striking your neighbor?"
He castigated Moses, "who made you, teacher, a judge over us?"
Christ however, when a man demanded that he arbitrate a dispute with his brother over an inheritance, refused to take part, saying "who made me a judge over you?"
Christ forbids divorce. The man divorcing his wife and marrying another commits adultery. And likewise the one who marries the divorced woman is an adulterer.
Moses, however, permits divorce. If any man takes a wife and lives with her and it happens that she finds no favor with him because something inappropriate has been found in her, he will write a bill of divorce, give it to her, and send her away from his house. Notice the contrast between law and gospel; between Moses and Christ.
The prophet of the creator, in order to kill as many as possible in battle, had the sun stand still that it might not go down until the adversaries of the people were utterly annihilated, but the Lord, since he is good, says "let not the sun set on your rage"
The prophet of the creator says my bows are taught and my arrows are sharpened, but the apostle says "Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to quench the fiery arrows of the evil one.
The prophet of the creator, when a battle commenced against his people, climbed to the top of a mountain and extended his hands to his god, in order to slaughter masses of people in the battle. But our Lord, since he is good, stretched out his hands on the cross. Not to slaughter human beings, but to save.
Oh worthless Lord, unstable, unfaithful. Withdrawing that which he established. His decrepit practices are accounted as foolishness, weakness, dishonor, pettiness, and contempt. What is more foolish? What more weak than the creator's demand of bloody sacrifices, and the stench of whole burnt offerings?
What is weaker than the cleansing of dishes and beds? What more ignoble than the further dishonor of the flesh, which is already ashamed? What more pathetic than the demand of eye for eye? What more contemptible than the excluding of foods? This being is not the father of Jesus Christ.
