Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity is an officially recognized disability in Sweden (this is not recognized as an illness because no diagnosis exists for this condition).” Professor Johansson gave the example of a head ache “ how can one measure the pain or prove the existence of a head ache?” Sweden ranks in the top 10 in the world for healthcare. Magnetic Flux poses the largest threat to individuals with EMHS.

Kansas

Despite voters overwhelmingly rejecting a constitutional amendment that would have allowed abortion restrictions in the state, Kansas Republicans passed several anti-abortion bills into law late last month, overriding the governor’s veto.
The first bill, HB 2436, makes it a crime to “coerce” someone into having an abortion. Democrats attempted to widen the scope of the bill to include all kinds of reproductive coercion, like pressuring someone to become or stay pregnant and prohibiting their access to birth control, and enshrine a right to “reproductive autonomy.” Republicans voted down the amendment.
The second bill, HB 2749, requires medical facilities and providers to (1) ask patients their reason for having an abortion and (2) report the data, including personal information about the patient, to the legislature every other year. Gov. Laura Kelly (D) agreed with the objections of Democrats and reproductive rights advocates, saying when she vetoed the bill that there is “no valid reason to force a woman to disclose to the legislature why she is seeking an abortion.”
  • Democrats offered numerous amendments to HB 2749, including one to require men to report to the legislature their reasons for having a vasectomy and another requiring men to report why they are seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction. Republicans rejected all of them.
Finally, the Republican legislature overrode Kelly’s line-item veto allocating $2 million to the Pregnancy Compassion Awareness Program, created last year with a different veto override. The program is run by an anti-abortion group called the Kansas Pregnancy Care Network, which refers pregnant people to crisis pregnancy centers designed to use misleading information to discourage them from obtaining an abortion.

Louisiana

Louisiana’s legislature is doubling down on its anti-abortion laws, passing bills to increase criminalization and refusing to add exemptions to its abortion ban.
Earlier this month, the Louisiana House took up a bill passed by the Senate that would make it a crime, punishable by jail time, to possess abortion-inducing medication. SB 276, sponsored by 23 Republicans and one Democrat, was initially written to create a punishment for coercing someone into an abortion without their knowledge or consent (e.g. spiking a drink). However, House legislators recently added an amendment to the bill that classifies mifepristone and misoprostol as Schedule IV substances alongside some opioids and benzodiazepines. A pregnant person possessing the drugs for their own use could not be charged, but others who intend to distribute them to pregnant people seeking an abortion or store them for their own potential future use would face up to ten years in prison.
“Neither is a drug of abuse or dependence, and that is what the controlled drug schedule is for,” said [emergency room Dr. Jennifer] Avegno of the abortion drugs. “It makes no scientific or medical sense to put these drugs in the same category as Xanax or Valium.”
Mifepristone is a drug that blocks a hormone called progesterone, which is necessary for a pregnancy to continue. Misoprostol causes uterine contractions, causing the body to expel the pregnancy tissue. Mifepristone is also used to treat Cushing’s disease, a hormonal disorder. Misoprostol is also used to induce labor, manage a miscarriage and in the treatment of ulcers. Neither are addictive. “People do not go around taking them and getting dependent and having bad outcomes because of it,” said Avegno. “It’s like saying your blood pressure medicine or insulin is a drug of abuse.”
A week later, Republicans on the House Criminal Justice Committee voted 7-4 to reject a bill to add rape and incest exceptions to the state’s total abortion ban. House Bill 164, written by Democratic Rep. Delisha Boyd, would have allowed girls younger than 17 to have abortions if they became pregnant as the result of sexual assault.
“That baby [in the womb] is innocent … We have to hang on to that,” said committee member Rep. Dodie Horton, R-Haughton, who voted against the bill. Rep. Lauren Ventrella, R-Greenwell Spring, also voted against the legislation, saying the proposed law would be difficult to enforce. Teenagers who had consensual sex might feign rape or incest in order to get access to abortion services, she suggested…
Dr. Neelima Sukhavasi, a Baton Rouge doctor specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, also implored the lawmakers to approve Boyd’s proposal. She and her colleagues have delivered babies for pregnant teenagers, including mothers as young as 13, since Louisiana’s abortion ban went into effect two years ago. These young pregnant people can experience health complications that affect them for the rest of their lives, Sukhavasi said, and sometimes don’t have the mental capacity to handle the births. “One of these teenagers delivered a baby while clutching a teddy bear,” she told the committee.
The Committee also killed three other bills: HB 56, to allow abortions in cases of spontaneous miscarriage or nonviable pregnancy; HB 63, to clarify that the removal of an ectopic pregnancy is not an abortion under state law; HB 293, to add protection for physicians who do not intend to induce abortion by prescribing certain medications.

Texas

Meanwhile, in Texas—a state that pioneered the war on women and reproductive rights—a man initiated legal action to sue people who helped his former partner obtain an out-of-state abortion.
The man, Collin Davis, filed a petition in a state district court seeking permission to launch legal depositions to collect evidence for a potential lawsuit under a Texas law that contains civil liability for anyone who “aids and abets” an abortion. According to his lawyer, Jonathan Mitchell (who crafted the anti-abortion law), Davis is seeking to sue “co-conspirators and accomplices…involved in the murder of [his] unborn child.”
“Fathers of aborted fetuses can sue for wrongful death in states with abortion bans, even if the abortion occurs out-of-state,” he wrote. “They can sue anyone who paid for the abortion, anyone who aided or abetted the travel, and anyone involved in the manufacture or distribution of abortion drugs.”
Molly Duane, a senior staff attorney with the Center for Reproductive Rights, described Mitchell’s statement and general approach as misleading “fearmongering.”
“People need to understand that it is not a crime to leave Texas or any other state in the country for an abortion,” said Duane, who is working with lawyers from the firm Arnold & Porter to represent the woman and others targeted in the Davis case. “I don’t want people to be intimidated, but they should be outraged and alarmed.” Duane described the woman’s relationship with Davis as “toxic and harmful.”
Mitchell also represents a different man who pursued a similar claim last year: Marcus Silva engaged Mitchell to sue the friends of his estranged wife for allegedly helping her obtain abortion pills. Evidence later revealed that Silva knew about the plans beforehand and did not intervene, likely intending to use the threat of legal action as a way of forcing his partner to halt divorce proceedings.
Monday’s counterclaim illustrates, in painstaking detail, exactly how Silva—aided by Mitchell—allegedly deployed this tactic. It was only after Brittni’s abortion was complete that Silva revealed he knew about the plan and, according to the lawsuit, threatened to turn her in if she didn’t submit to his continued abuse. He even showed the police photographs of messages discussing the possibility of an abortion. “Once I finally got home with the girls he had been drinking and he told me that he knew,” Brittni texted one friend. “He’s using it against me.” In another message, she wrote, “Now he’s saying if I don’t give him my ‘mind body and soul’ until the end of the divorce, which he’s going to drag out, he’s going to make sure I go to jail for doing it.” […]
The counterclaim points out another flaw in his argument: Silva himself “is responsible for the alleged injury for which he seeks to recover.” He “knew that Brittni planned to terminate her alleged pregnancy and acquiesced in accepting Brittni’s actions,” so “it would be unconscionable to permit him to benefit by changing his position now.” His claims, in short, are barred “by unclean hands,” because he effectively entrapped his estranged wife—covertly discovering her plan to terminate the pregnancy, then allowing her to go through with it for the express purpose of blackmailing her into staying with him.

Indiana

A three-judge panel of the Indiana Court of Appeals last month unanimously recognized a religious freedom challenge to the state’s complete ban on abortion.
The case, brought by Hoosier Jews for Choice and four anonymous women of various faiths, alleges that the ban interferes with “their sincere religious beliefs that require and direct them to obtain abortions” criminalized since the law took effect in 2023. According to Jewish law, a fetus does not have personhood until birth, and abortion is required if the pregnancy endangers the life or health of the mother.
Brief of Hoosier Jews for Choice (and other plaintiffs): As indicated by the declarations of numerous rabbis, Judaism teaches that a fetus becomes a living person only at birth, and prior to that is considered part of the woman’s body, without independent rights. Abortion should occur and is mandated to end a pregnancy that may cause serious consequences to a woman’s mental or physical heath. Judaism also recognizes that physical health risks are not limited to those likely to cause substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function. Judaism stresses the necessity of protecting the physical and mental health of the woman—a life—over the potential for life present in a zygote, embryo, or fetus. Therefore, restrictions that prevent a woman from obtaining an abortion where compelled by Jewish law, which mandates that the woman act to protect her physical or mental health, impose a substantial burden on that person’s religious exercise.
Under Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), “a governmental entity may not substantially burden a personʹs exercise of religion,” defined to include “any exercise of religion, whether or not compelled by, or central to, a system of religious belief.” This means that arguments about whether plaintiffs are strictly observant are irrelevant; the law protects sincerely held religious views regardless of whether that view is idiosyncratic or unorthodox. However, even a law that imposes a substantial burden on the exercise of religion can be enforced if it is “the least restrictive means of furthering [a] compelling governmental interest” (the strict scrutiny test).
The state argued that abortion does not carry “religious significance” and, even if it did, the abortion ban satisfies strict scrutiny because it is “sufficiently narrowly tailored” to “further the State’s interest” in “protecting human lives in the womb.” Throughout Indiana’s brief, the state attempts to use science to back up fetal personhood, extending developmental physiology to make unfounded claims that protected life unquestionably begins at conception:
In lower courts, the State’s compelling interest is not up for debate. In Cheaney v. State, the Indiana Supreme Court held that the State’s interest in protecting unborn children is “valid and compelling” from “the moment of conception.” …A basic understanding of biology supports these holdings. “That human fetuses are human beings is a scientific fact, not a theological claim.” Regardless whether an individual person believes this, “the scientific consensus” is that “[d]evelopment begins at fertilization,” after which the newly created “unicellular zygote divides many times and becomes progressively transformed into a multicellular human being through cell division, migration, growth, and differentiation.” …. Science thus tells us that “[t]he act of performing an induced abortion during any stage of pregnancy, from fertilization up to birth, ends the life of an innocent human being.” The State’s interest in protecting unborn fetal life at any stage from intentional destruction accordingly is nothing less than “compelling.”
A panel of the Indiana Court of Appeals—made up of a Republican appointee and two Democratic appointees—unanimously ruled against the state, upholding a lower court’s injunction against the abortion ban as it applies to the plaintiffs. In the process, the court laid out a path for religious freedom challenges to abortion bans in other states and at the federal level.
The trial court found that absent a preliminary injunction, Plaintiffs would be irreparably harmed by the loss of their religious freedoms guaranteed by RFRA. A loss of First Amendment freedoms, which include the right to free exercise of religion, “for even minimal periods of time, unquestionably constitutes irreparable injury.”... Without a preliminary injunction, Plaintiffs will suffer the loss of their right to exercise their sincere religious beliefs by obtaining an abortion when directed by their religion and prohibited by the Abortion Law. They also have shown their sexual and reproductive lives will continue to be restricted absent the injunction and as a result of the Abortion Law.

2024.03.10 00:19 ses1 Scientific Evidence for an Immaterial Mind [aka the Soul]

Yes, we do have some evidence that the mind is separate from the brain.
1) cerebral localization
It's been known since the 19th century that for motor and sensory function there are very specific locations in the brain that seem to mediate those functions. Hand movements are controlled by a specific part of the opposite cerebral hemisphere. Vision is controlled by a very discrete area in the occipital lobes.
However, Higher intellectual functions, such as abstract thought, mathematics, ethics, are not localized like that. There is no calculus center of my brain. There's no ethics center in my brain.
The brain seems to be necessary for doing calculus and doing addition and thinking about concepts like justice and mercy, and so on, but it's not localizable. The belief that higher abstract thought was going to be localizable was held by materialism in the 19th century, and they developed the theory of phrenology from that. He has the idea that all of these individual higher intellectual Functions have a spot in the brain that controlled them. Phrenology has been discredited. It's been shown to be wrong.
Because only certain things in the brain seem to be mediated by the brain other aspects of the mind, don't have a spot in the brain. The implication there is that they're not really material, but they're an immaterial power of being able to reason and use logic. And frankly, that's a very old dualist idea. It was an idea proposed by Aristotle. So for thousands of years duelists have predicted that and modern neuroscience, for now, confirms that.
2) split brain operations
Back in the 1960s, Roger Sperry, a prominent neuroscientist did a series of studies on patients, who had split brain operations due to severe epilepsy. An epileptic focus would begin in one hemisphere of the brain and travel through the corpus colosum, which is a bundle of fibers connecting the two hemispheres, and cause a generalized seizure.
It was recognized by surgeons in the mid-20th century that if you cut the fiber bundle that connected, the two hemispheres of the brain that you could prevent the seizures from becoming generalized, and you could greatly improve the quality of the patient's life. So a number of patients had this operation called corpus callosotomy. The patient's seizures would get better. But they really weren't much different, that is that their brains were essentially cut in half, but they still seem to be a unitary person. They still seem to be fairly normal. Sperry was a neuroscientist who studied these people in detail, and he did find that there were some subtle abnormalities as a result of cutting the brain in half, but the abnormalities were very subtle; so subtle that the experiments he won him the Nobel Prize.
And what that implies is that the human mind is not purely generated by the matter of the brain, otherwise cutting the brain in half would have profound effects on the human mind. It might make two people. Certainly, it should create a profound difference in a person's state of consciousness, but it doesn't. You've cut the brain in half and the person can't tell the difference, except that he has fewer seizures.
3) epilepsy neurosurgery
Dr. Penfield was the first neurosurgeon to systematically operate on the human brain when people were awake; he would work on the brain while they were awake in an effort to identify the focus of their seizures and to remove the focus from the brain. So their seizures would stop, and he operated on upwards of a thousand patients like this and very carefully recorded his results. He believed that all the mind originated from activity of the brain., but by the end of his career, he was a passionate dualist.
He repeatedly observed that there were aspects of the patient's mind that no matter what he did to the brain he couldn't affect. He could elicit memories, make a muscle move, or make a patient have a sensation. But he couldn't change their consciousness, he couldn't change their intellect, he couldn't change their sense of self. There was a fundamental core, that no matter what he did to the brain, remain the same. So, he said there was something he couldn't reach.
He asked the question. Why are there no intellectual seizures? And when people have epilepsy commonly a person will have jerking of a muscle. Sometimes so many muscles jerk that they actually go unconscious. Sometimes they have a tingling on their skin, or sometimes they'll have a funny smell, or sometimes they can even have a little behavioral tick.
But they never start doing calculus. They never contemplate, justice or mercy. They never think about Shakespeare. So Penfield says, why aren't there intellectual seizures? If the mind comes from the brain entirely, the mind is material in some sense, then you ought to have seizures that make you do addition. Or think about politics. But you don't. What that implies is that the intellect is not the brain.
4) vegetative state brain function
Neuroscientist Adrian Owen looked at brain function in people who were in persistent vegetative state, Persistent vegetative, where a person has such severe brain damage that they show no sign of consciousness. And sometimes their caretakers will say something like, I get the sense that the person is there that they understand things, but there's no clinical evidence for it. Doctors would examine them, but there's no sign of any reaction at all and scan their brains are shrunken and obviously severely damage.
So Owen did a fascinating experiment. He used the technique called functional MRI imaging, which is mRI machine that images changes in blood flow in the brain that seems to correlate with brain function. So if you're moving your arm, the part of your brain that involves moving your arm lights up on the functional MRI. If you're thinking about stuff, your frontal lobe, slide up, things like that. So what Owen did is that he took a woman who had been diagnosed for several years and persistent vegetative state from a car accident, who showed no sign at all of any awareness, deep common, put her in the MRI machine and ask your questions. He said, pretend that you are playing tennis. Or imagine that you're walking across the room. He asked her to imagine all these things, and her brain kind of lit up in places.
But you could say that the brain lighting up, doesn't mean she was understanding anything. Maybe the sound coming into her ears, was causing a reflex or something. So, he took 15 normal people. And he did the same thing with them. Stuck them in a machine, put an asked the same questions. And then he asked, neurobiologists to look at the functional MRI images of this woman and the 15 normal people, And see if you can tell a difference between the two and they couldn't. Her pattern of reaction was identical to the normal people. That seemed to imply that she could understand what he was asking.
But perhaps the lighting up of areas in her brain and the lighting up of the area is a normal people's brains was just because of the reception of the sound, and didn't really understand. So what he then did is he took the same words that he had asked her before, but he took away the semantics. And just left some syntax. And her brain stop stopped reacting. As did the normal controls. Her brain only reacted when what he said to her made sense. It didn't react from just sound.
And this has been repeated by a number of different investigators that show the same thing that he found. That even when your brain is so massively destroyed and there's no clinical evidence for any mental activity at all, functional MRI can find that these patients are capable of thinking. Some patients who can do mathematics, ask "what's six plus six" and then give them different answers and when you hit the right answer of the brain lights up. So, very clearly, there are aspects of the mind that cannot be destroyed by severe brain damage. That's what Owen's work is showing us. It's showing us our aspects of the mind that aren't connected tightly to the brain, our minds are immaterial.
Conclusion
So not only is this a blow to a naturalistic understanding of the world it is also evidence for the existence of the soul, since in religion and philosophy, the soul is often considered to be synonymous with the mind or the self.
And while this doesn't show how an immaterial mind could interact with the physical brain in A Scientific Case for the Soul Robin Collins offers some idea how the immaterial mind can interact with the material brain - see sections 4 & 5.

2024.02.22 21:50 NeedleworkerSad357 The Reality of "Alien Abductions"

This post is an overview of 'alien' abductions. I highly encourage you to research further yourself. A basic knowledge of how mind control (MKULTRA/MONARCH) works (programming, alter personalities, etc.) is absolutely necessary to understand this post (for those unaware, some starting information here, here, and here). This is split into a 3-part post, they are quote-heavy for the character limit. All citations, sources, and links are at the end of the third post. Read all 3 parts.
'Alien abductions' are a cover for mind control. They are a continuation of covert mind control programming operations. The technology is real, the pain and torture is real, it's the alien part that is not. 'Aliens' are utilized as covescreen memories. The scope of these programs is massive, and equaled by the huge amount of disinformation about 'aliens' that they push out to confuse. When you examine this from the mind control angle, with knowledge of the timeline, what they're doing, and have been doing, you can see the perfect correlations and exact parallels between these abductions and the known facts of mind control programming. Many victims/researchers realize that some kind of mind control and hypnotic techniques are being used, but mistakenly attribute it to 'aliens'. It's this part that many get stuck on. Aliens are the mask that's used.
"Among ufologists, the term 'abduction' has come to refer to an infinitely-confounding experience, or matrix of experiences, shared by a dizzying number of individuals, who claim that travellers from the stars have scooped them out of their beds, or snatched them from their cars, and subjected them to interrogations, quasi-medical examinations, and 'instruction' periods. Usually, these sessions are said to occur within alien spacecraft; frequently, the stories include terrifying details reminiscent of the tortures inflicted in Germany’s death camps. The abductees often (though not always) lose all memory of these events; they find themselves back in their cars or beds, unable to account for hours of 'missing time.' Hypnosis, or some other trigger, can bring back these haunted hours in an explosion of recollection — and as the smoke clears, an abductee will often spot a trail of similar experiences, stretching all the way back to childhood."
"Denise Meyer, told us that small children in Nebraska, ages 4 and 5 were beginning to report 'alien' encounters to their therapists. 'The kids are describing little green men that fit the description of the 'grays'. They also are describing green UFOs. It appears these are screen memories, used to block the memories of something else.' Meyer said."
"Aliens perform extremely painful experiments or procedures on abductees, saying that these acts are necessary but give no explanation why. Painful genital probes are performed, on children as well as adults."
"Electronic Dissolution of Memory (EDOM) was perfected by the CIA in 1960. The first 'alien' abduction, the Hill case, occurred a year later. Once the intelligence sector had the means of pulling off the perfect crime - by erasing short-term memories - the abductions could take place without fear of exposure. 'Hypnotic reconstructive surgery' swapped the desired cover story for the victim's recollection of illicit medical experimentation."
"They're not alien abductions. They're the results of a tremendously successful and very sophisticated mind control operation, all of which has been in development since, well they started working on those kinds of things since before World War II, but they have perfected them. But that's what it is. It's not extraterrestrials coming down. The human body cannot pass through walls or roofs or through windows that are closed. This is all the product of the imagination and people's willingness to believe something because they want it to be true."
"...UFO abductions are in fact the operation of secret mind control research, their terrestrial origins concealed through the use of advanced craft, with experimentation on unwitting subjects masked through hypnosis, RHIC-EDOM memory erasure corresponding to the familiar abductee experience of 'missing time', or other means of mind control. What better way to conceal secret technology and human experimentation than to wrap the events in extraterrestrial trappings — perhaps using hallucinogens, alien masks, electronic effects, unusual craft, and even computerized 'virtual reality' technology — and to keep issuing statements insisting that 'alien abduction' is the product of someone’s crazed imagination?"
"The slaves are taken to rooms where examining tables with white sheets and X-ray machines, headgear, and medical equipment is in place. The alien equipment has gotten more high-tech over the last 40 years. The aliens wear suits that are full of occult symbols. The people are restrained with clamps and electrical shock and energy is used on them. They are told that they are receiving information. They are given tracking implants and other implants."
"I am aware that people have memories of encounters with aliens. I do have memories of meeting 'aliens', being abducted by them, being invited to visit them, and so on. However, these memories have always eventually been revealed to be staged trickery: studios that were the ‘alien spaceships’ and the aliens I encountered were cult members dressed in costumes. In my programming, these alien memories were installed as a smokescreens or distractions to ‘real’ cult memories, i.e., if presenters started to have any cult-related memories that they did not immediately deny or forget, they were then supposed to attribute the memories to 'alien activity'."
Many victims recover these memories after undergoing regressive hypnosis. Mind control programmers know this, and the true events are deeper, under the implanted 'alien' hypnotic memory layer. The regressive hypnosis used by victims actually further cements the false recollection of being taken by aliens ('black ops' soldiers/Delta slaves are also subjected to these fake memories to cover up actual missions and operations, in case they begin to remember).
"...That same month, I'd also given my first public interview with CKLN (a Candian radio station) as part of it's series about mind control. During the interview, I unwittingly provided information about implanted 'alien' screen memories that unfortunately still seemed as real as my legitimate op memories."
The 'UFO' crafts do exist (I have many books and documents detailing this aspect in my research collection here for anyone interested). Different groups possess advanced 'antigravity' crafts, and have for close to a century. Much of the original technology, the top Nazi scientists/mind control programmers, and their files came to the U.S. (and other countries) via Paperclip, ratlines, and other means.
"Prince Philip had personally organised the ratlines for his Nazi pals to escape Europe during the last years of WWII. Of particular interest, were the Nazi scientists whom he arranged ‘safe passage’ for, to the USA."
"So what happened to Martin Bormann between his escape from the Bunker in 1945 and his resurrection under the cloth of the Church in 1948 Argentina? From my memories he was safely tucked in the arms of the Jesuits in sunny California. How did he get there? The same way much of the booty looted after the war got to the Americas, by U-boat. I was witness to where the U-boats landed on the rocky coastline, just down the road from Manhattan Beach and American Martyrs Catholic Church. Not just Nazis made it onto our shores just after the war, but also technology. Advanced German flying machines were unloaded in crates to be reassembled in the Mojave Desert and used in the UFO hoax. The U-boat drop was on the coastline on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, just under an area of land later occupied by the oceanarium 'Marineland of the Pacific.' The area between the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Santa Catalina Island is a big UFO hotspot. Lots of activity appears to be going on in the ocean, including speculation of an underwater UFO base. I wonder if those 'UFOs' might be doing a little drug running, perhaps up from South America? Arms running may also have been going on. Other items smuggled from U-boat to shore included snuff films to be used in mind control and Nazi indoctrination. The secret societies and the Nazis filmed everything. I knew the Nazis, their wealth of technology and contraband washed up out of the sea. I remember one cold night sitting high of a cliff, shaking and afraid to look down. Below, a U-boat was dropping its load on to the shores of the cove where it was hidden. It was a sharp drop and I was afraid of heights, so I just sat frozen. I think I was being used as a decoy in case strangers came by, Mrs. Hildebrand could divert their attention by having them rescue her child from the cliff."
"What they call UFOs, these crafts that fly around the sky, are real but they're not piloted by some little green guy from some other planet. They're owned and operated by the United States of America for one, the Soviet Union for another, probably Great Britian and Canada too...the technology is real. It's been kept secret, it's been used to promote this concept that there's an alien threat to this earth."
"I know that the CIA employees were programmed to believe in such alien forces in order to mask their uber programmers - these operatives were indoctrinated - made to foster this 'alien agenda' belief system and to pass it on. The Nazis were creating aircraft that looked like flying saucers. If any retired CIA official decided to talk about all of this - after the documents had been declassified 'memory modification' would kick in i.e. the unwitting mind control victim would add fanciful stuff about the 'alien agenda' to confuse the issue. I know that there were Illuminati/Nazi designs of aircraft, of the 'flying saucer' variety - but they were not built or flown by 'aliens'."
"Wayne Morris (interviewing Kathleen Sullivan): 'Do you have any indication of U.S. government or German government use of UFO technology...that they have developed craft?'"
"KS: 'I was exposed to some of that. I saw at least one UFO for sure. It was in a garage, a large room where there was a door where the thing could go out into the open. It wasn't touching the ground. It was an amazing thing. It had a fantastic looking metal to it...I was absolutely fascinated by it. I have been told that they started out by using these craft, which they said were created by the some of the German scientists. They will talk about V2's on Discovery channel, but they will never ever bring up this end of it...what they had as far as technology and brought it over with them. I think NASA is the biggest cover for this stuff. I understand that there is a base in the Himalayas as well, and that there are some facilities under oceans where some of the stuff is also stored, way, way out of detection areas. They do seem to be able to go down in deep, deep areas of water including one place near Hawaii. But they supposedly started out, or so I have been told by a number of people, using magnetic grids they called it, I don't understand that kind of technology...'"
"WM: 'The earth itself has a large electromagnetic grid field around it, and it is my understanding that they have used that kind of energy somehow in conjunction with creating these craft...'"
"KS: 'You say it better than I could, all I know is they talked about it and again, Dad bragged about that too. I have also heard that nowadays they don't use that particular kind of technology any more.'"
"A fleet of UFOs with NASA stamped on their shell were stored on an underground conveyor belt system at Pine Gap."
Full-scale fake 'UFO' setups are also used for programming these alien abduction scenarios into the abductee's mind.
"Another thing I have run across and have been able to verify for another survivor at Dallas at a hospital there, was that they also have a place near Dallas where they have an actual full-size UFO in a very large room that also has the same type of hydraulic system beneath it, and the survivor would be taken into the UFO. They would see people that looked like aliens. Certain things would be done to them and they would think that they had just been abducted by aliens in a UFO."
"Colorado Springs, CO — The ALEX system programming and end-times military programming is coming out of Colorado Springs and is connected to NORAD. One of the Colorado sites is doing alien programming with mock UFOs."
"Some mind-control victims have even reported being put in full-scale, fake UFO’s that were sometimes moved up and down by hydraulics. In the fake UFO’s, drugged, tranced victims met humans dressed in 'alien' costumes. Later, because of the effects of forcibly administered drugs and Ericksonian hypnosis, the remembering victims weren’t able to differentiate between preceding, legitimate events and the subsequent acted-out UFO scenarios. They also were not able to recognize that the 'alien abductors' were really human. Although some survivors are convinced that their abductors were aliens because they remember them as having been unnaturally tall, changing the perceived size of perpetrators in the minds of victims can easily be accomplished through hypnosis. For example, due to 'Gulliver programming,' I initially remembered some of my persecutors as being several inches tall!"
"Satanic activities, Bonacci said, were also a frequent part of the Monarch programming. The Satanic and Alien programs took place 'almost always on military ground.' Bonacci said. 'The alien stuff happened in Colorado, up in the mountains, I think they did it mostly where there was hardly any chance that there would be a lot of people around.' He described some of the alien programming as taking place in caves underground. 'They took you in the caves which they had set up. Some of them had an alien space ship so you would go into it."
"On another occasion, I was escorted by Henry Kissinger into a large, warehouse-sized room that was set up to look like the inside of a big UFO. We entered the room through a shower-sized entrance that was walled on both ends by shimmery, soft strands of a silver metallic substance. A number of tall adults in the fake UFO wore what were clearly 'alien' costumes. He bragged to me that others like me were brought to that specific facility to be given UFO/Alien abduction programming. Because I was not hypnotized to believe that it was the inside of a UFO, and because he seemed to need to brag to somebody about how clever they were, I never forgot that it was a fake set-up. I now believe that these kinds of fake memories were created in the minds of controlled slaves to discredit them. I believe that the fake memories were also installed to block out the survivors’ memories of real perpetrators and real events."
Those behind these abductions are the same people and groups that are behind the trauma-based mind control programs. Intelligence agencies and the military, who at the top levels are run by Illuminati, Nazi groups, and Jesuits. They are the 'aliens'.
"There are an increasing number of 'alien abductees' who are remembering seeing U.S. military personnel during their so-called alien abductions. The abductees are being taken to U.S. Military bases. The reason that the number of people who are connecting the government with the aliens is increasing is 1. More people are receiving mind-control programming, therefore there are more people for which the cover stories and electroshock fail to totally hide what has happened, 2. Better therapeutic methods are helping mind-control victims recover their memories better, 3. There have been a rising number of people like this author exposing it. Karla Turner, who was a victim of mind-control and abductions, began catching on that the abductions were being done by our government. When she began to publicly expose what the government was doing, the government murdered her. (She joins a growing number of people this author has seen die prematurely because they were publicly exposing the truth.) Alien abduction victims have been reporting human black helicopter activity harassment since the 1970’s. (Perhaps as the Vietnam War wound down & ended, the U.S. government had a surplus of helicopters and delegated some to task forces that picked up mind-control victims in remote sites.) An example from this time period of an alien abduction also involving helicopters is the Betty Andreasson/Luca abduction. A number of victims have remembered the helicopters coming around the time of their abduction. When bright lights are shined into their houses or into their cars these victims of trauma-based mind-control are programmed to see the helicopter’s spotlight as a UFO (as the NWO does have flying saucers, sometimes the real thing is used). Beth Collins of Oregon reports in her book 'Connections - Solving Our Alien Abduction Mystery' about how helicopters were involved with her abduction experiences. She lives in an area that is a hot-bed for covert CIA activities. In her book, she provides a transcript of memories of military personnel being the guilty party in an abduction."
"The abductees have been abducted. Yet they are also spewing fantasy — or, more precisely, they have been given a set of lies to repeat and believe. If my hypothesis proves true, then we must accept the following: The kidnapping is real. The fear is real. The pain is real. The instruction is real. But the little gray men from Zeti Reticuli are not real: they are constructs, Halloween masks meant to disguise the real faces of the controllers. The abductors may not be visitors from Beyond; rather, they may be a symptom of the carcinoma which blackens our body politic...'"
"'Substantial evidence exists,' Martin Cannon writes, 'linking members of this country's intelligence community (including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the Office of Naval Intelligence) with the esoteric technology of mind control. For decades, 'spy-chiatrists' working behind the scenes — on college campuses, in CIA-sponsored institutes, and in prisons - have experimented with the erasure of memory, hypnotic resistance to torture, truth serums, post-hypnotic suggestion, rapid induction of hypnosis, electronic stimulation of the brain, non-ionizing radiation, microwave induction of intracerebral 'voices' and a host of even more disturbing technologies...' Cannon agrees with CIA veteran Miles Copeland who once admitted to Robert Eringer of Rolling Stone: The congressional subcommittee which went into this sort of thing got only the barest glimpse. Cannon argues that much of the testimony before Congress on the CIA's 'brainwashing' efforts was perjury. He says the clandestine research into thought manipulation was not stopped but went operational and, he asserts, any claims to the contrary are cover stories. He presents evidence that a number of government agencies, CIA, NASA Atomic Energy Commission as well as a variety of agencies of the Department of Defense are all involved in research and operations to this day, and that the UFO abduction phenomenon, at least in part, is quite likely a continuation of the clandestine mind control operations."
"Military abductions — using 'aliens' as a screen memory to cover their actions. I’ve come across talk of an increase in rogue military units abducting people, programming/abusing them, then using alien screens to mask the activity. If the military black ops want to snag you but they don’t want you to remember anything that might incriminate them, then using an alien screen is perfect cover. Some people actually enjoy the idea of being taken by aliens, and so if they believe they’re being taken by the Grays, then they may willingly allow it to happen again and again and put up no resistance to being abducted...not realizing of course, that they’re actually being taken and programmed by humans. For others it’s the exact opposite - the idea of coming forward and admitting to anybody that they were possibly taken by 'space aliens' is so humiliating and unacceptable that they will just keep quiet. It’s 'alien screen memories as built in no-talk insurance.'"
"Lincoln S&L conspiracy witness, Paul Bonacci, testified to a number of code names for different programs. Some names matched those given by other victims who did not know Bonacci. There was 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Alice in Wonderland'. One project was code-named 'Alien'. Bonacci said 'the alien program which they used...Alien was mainly under Star Wars...' (This would fit with Aquino's reported penchant to dress up like Darth Vader and it would be consistent with his frustrated literary urge to extend the Star Wars trilogy. Bonacci positively identified Aquino as one of his programmers.)"
"In a recent article 'Alien-Human Interactions: the Facts and Propaganda' by Karla Turner, she points out that many alien abductees (like herself) are 'monitored and harassed by human agents of some sort and the cases of phone and mail surveillance are only part of the story'...'He was compelled by some post-hypnotic suggestion'...'There is strong external evidence that these events have been carried out by strictly human agents and not by aliens giving the illusion of a military presence.' She goes on to explain about the implants, wires & tubes that are put in victims of 'alien abductions'. Karla Turner doesn’t know that she is a victim of trauma-based mind control, but she’s getting close to understanding what she has been subjected to."
"The disclosures of Paul Bonacci, which jibe with reports of MPD professionals in other cases, point to several peculiar artificially induced memories common to many Monarch victimized children. Chaitkin said that a number of the victims were recovering memories of tormenters dressed as space aliens, or Mickey Mouse, or in Wizard of Oz costumes. Bonacci told the story of the teenaged concentration camp inmate allegedly named Greenbaum, who had participated with the Nazis, to save himself, came to the United States under Project Paperclip, the secret and illegal importation of Nazi war criminals by the U.S. intelligence agencies. Known later as 'Dr. Green', Bonacci said he became a high-level mind controller, and, according to Bonacci is widely represented today in mind control programs which have a distinctive magic theme."
"Precise details of all these horrors lie deeply buried in national security archives, perhaps. But this history, as told to psychiatrists, dovetails with what is definitively known about Anglo-American intelligence operations and the German Nazis. The killers in the Nazi camps were themselves trained and organized by psychiatrists and eugenicists, operating from the 'T4' bureau. These psychiatrists had long been the pets of white supremacist British and American financier networks."
"Boehm to Bonacci: 'So aside from Aquino... did you see some...wherever you were with these Monarch activities — did you see some of those people who were at the Satanic activities too?' 'Some of them yes,' Bonacci said. 'The adults were wearing military uniforms when they were training us and so were we. They kept everything at the base, but during most of the training we wore regular street clothes when we went through the 'alien' programming (we wore street clothes). The reason that anybody could come out of Monarch (alive) was because they all would be talking about little green men.' Bonacci said that there were two groups of Project Monarch slaves. 'Some were put into society,' Bonacci said. 'They were the ones that went into entertainment, and a lot of them were used for transporting drugs...they used the entertainment industry because they could input their messages for the future.'"
"If you still have serious doubts that mind control could be part of Project Alien (or some such named activity), take a look at this letter from Walter B. Smith, the Director of the CIA. Declassified on 20 April, 1977 the letter is thought to have been written in 1952:"
CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WASHINGTON 23, D.C. OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR
MEMORANDUM TO: Director, Psychological Strategy Board SUBJECT: Flying Saucers
1. I am today transmitting to the National Security Council a proposal (TAB A) in which it is concluded that the problems connected with unidentified flying objects appear to have implications for psychological warfare as well as for intelligence and operations.
2. The background for this view is presented in some detail in TAB B.
3. I suggest that we discuss at an early board meeting the possible offensive or defensive utilization of these phenomena for psychological warfare purposes.
Enclosure Walter B. Smith
Director
"Of course TAB A and TAB B could not be found. So much for the value of the Freedom of Information Act. Many of the survivors of Project Monarch are remembering alien scenarios, while 'ordinary folks' are those reporting their abductions. The thing they both have in common is the amnesia they experienced for so many years after the event. Without question, most of the effects described by the abductees can be duplicated by mind control 'handlers'."
"The typical elements — these include UFO sightings; missing time as a child; missing time as an adult; various physical exams, fetus-retrieval and baby presentation; consciousness of an encounter; virtual-reality events; training and instruction sessions; implants; telepathic communications; and the extension of alien involvement into lives of other family members. The data indicates, then, that the phenomenon is not imaginary or self-generated, that it is linked to the UFO sightings, that it involves a generational interest on the part of the aliens, and that contact can be made by remote means."
There is a reason the same reoccurring themes in alien abductions overlap almost exactly with those of mind control victims: they are one and the same. The common parallels are: missing time, missing pregnancies, it starting at a young age, it being intergenerational/'running in the family', being from military/intelligence families, implants, being taken to underground bases, and given messages.
"These two topics — UFO abductions and mind control — have more in common than their mutual ostracization. The data overlap. If we could chart these phenomena on a Venn diagram, we would see a surprisingly large intersection between the two circles of information."
The appendix of Walter Bowart's Operation Mind Control has 11 tables charted (pictures here) of the overlap between alien abductions and ritual abuse from survivor data.
"There was a serious study about alien aspects done at MIT and one of the papers in here talks about - they found out that the so-called abductee community was highly dissociative. So the same thing you find in ritual abuse, you find in mind control, you find in alien abductees. And of course, for the first time now, people are beginning to say 'Yeah, I do remember there was a government guy standing around with those little grey things'. And of course how many survivors have been asked not to talk about their 'alien experiences'? About three years ago I asked that question, and just about everyone I could identify as a survivor raised their hand."
"It is obvious that for various reasons (including the goals set down in the secret Iron Mountain government report), the government (including cooperating agencies like NASA) decided to use an alien abduction theme rather than a Satanic Ritual Abuse theme to their mind-control programming. The major differences in the programming methodology is that the blood rituals of the SRA are no longer used. The reason why blood rituals are no longer needed is that the high-tech harmonic machines (which implant thoughts) and other high-tech methods eliminate the need for the blood traumas. The victims of alien abductions are taken at random, where the Illuminati victims are abducted more frequently around ritual dates. The person who believes in UFOs and aliens is going to receive the same type of treatment as those who believe in Satanic Ritual Abuse. The legal system and society at large are conditioned to treat them as nuts. This protects their abusers."
"One part of a person suffering from DID told their therapist all the lurid and traumatic incidents of ritual abuse involving sadistic terror and degradation as a child in the hands of a satanic cult. Another part of the same person told the therapist about being abducted aboard a UFO. In a child's voice the patient told the therapist all the usual things abductees say, there were no light bulbs on the ship, but the room was well lit. The aliens had big heads and big black pupil-less eyes. They spoke 'telepathically' without moving their lips and told her that 'humans will not be allowed out of their play pen because they don't know how to play with other children.'"
"Cannon posits that government saucers account for the countless sightings and abductions reported around the world. Screen memories explain the bug-eyed monsters. “A spectre haunts the democratic nations — the spectre of technofascism. All the powers of the espionage empire and the scientific establishment have entered into an unholy alliance,” Cannon says, 'psychiatrist and spy...microwave specialists and clandestine operators.' And then there are the cults. Between ritual molestation and 'alien' abductions, there is this common connection."
"Dr. Richard Boylan has written extensively about E.T. encounters, and has found five common features of people predominately involved in UFO/alien sightings and abductions:"
- Individuals possessing a high degree of psychic ability.
- Similar phenomenon occuring with other family members (multi or trans-generational).
- Native Americans and/or indigenous peoples.
- Children who have been subjected to severe abuse or trauma.
- Individuals and/or family members affiliated to government and/or military intelligence agencies or departments.
"In conjunction, a strong relationship exists between occultic ritual sites, top secret military installations, and UFO/alien sightings and abductions."
"I know the UFO phenomenon is associated with satanic cults, and post WWII Nazis. I know what function the greys played. They controlled the secret society’s members...The next connection I can make about this secret society is that they were into the indoctrination of children at pre-schools, because the cult I was in was associated with the McMartin case in Manhattan Beach, California. They were also associated with the MKUltra project through TRW, the government spy analysis center. This one group has connections to UFO’s, Nazis, MKUltra-like government projects, ritual abuse at pre-schools and crime on the streets...Who is behind this? I like to call them the cult behind the cults. It’s not the U.S. Government; these cults are world wide, and old. It’s not the world bankers, because the fingers keep pointing in their direction; and this is an ideological movement. Look at what is predicted to follow Armageddon, peace! Peace under a New World Order comes next. I personally look in the direction of the Vatican."
The same organization (False Memory Syndrome Foundation) that was founded by abusers to discredit and suppress the countless survivors of ritual abuse/trauma-based mind control was used to cover up these 'alien abductions'.
"Just as the legions of abused children (now grown to adulthood) were beginning to remember satanic abuse, (the ranks of diagnosed cases of Multiple Personality Disorder had reached 25,000 in the U.S.) and Harvard University's Dr. John Mack was enjoying celebrity as the author of a book on alien abductions, and about twenty percent of those diagnosed as suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) were being discovered to have military or intelligence backgrounds, a 'robust and adroit' public relations effort was mounted against those who were beginning to remember all sorts of details which related to their abuse as children. Groups were quickly formed to debunk such 'nonsense'. One was spearheaded by a woman who was herself named by her daughter as a child abuser. Her name was Pamela Freyd and her organization was the False Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF) which sprang suddenly up from nowhere. Other board members of the FMSF are useful for adding 'spin' to the reports of 'alien' abduction. Persinger (see here) has come up with a number of theories over the years which serve to explain away the 'alien' phenomenon as a 'natural' occurrence. One of his latest theories is that thousands of close encounters experiencers (abductees) were suffering from an exceedingly rare temporal lobe disorder which caused them to hallucinate the exact same things."
"The fact is that the wave of ritual child abuse allegations that swept the country in the 1980s cloaked federal psychotronic and eugenics experiments on young children. As one adult survivor of psychotronic mind control concludes, 'covert arms of government...have coined the term ‘screen memories’ to describe the obfuscational memories impressed by the abusers themselves.' The so-called 'False Memory Syndrome', he says, 'is a scapegoat created by a consortium of federal ‘spin doctors’ bent on negating the believability and viability of the more than 12,000 unwitting citizens who have been on the receiving end of this technology.' The CIA and military establishment 'must at all costs disguise their abuse in order to continue experimentation with psychotronics', he argues. The 'false memory' bromide has been popularized largely by organized pedophiles, cultists and hired guns of psychiatry. It has been adopted as the status quo position of the press. But the cover story originated with the CIA’s mind control netherworld. 'Nazi-inspired scientists', the survivor says, 'perform medical tests during the abuse event, such as implantation of biotelemetric tracking devices into nasal cavities and ear canals.' The brain transmitters can be tracked by Global Positioning System satellites. The subject therefore cannot hope to escape the mind control network. Screen memories of abuse, created by hypnotic or psychotronic visualization, a 'novelty effect', are offered by Martin Cannon as a probable explanation for the weirdness surrounding most 'alien' abductions. Again the government, shielded by an unbelievable cover story, escapes detection. EM technology (and testing on humans) remains classified. No doubt, UFOs exist and have traumatized thousands of 'contactees' — the military has been building them since the 1940s."
One of the common themes is abductions being generational ('running in families'), which mirrors trauma-based mind control. Notice the high number of abductees coming from military, intelligence, or cult-connected families (the same people constantly using mind control), just as with mind control/ritual abuse victims. Parents are programmed to abuse and mind-split their own children, and offer them to the group/agency to do so. The ability to easily dissociate (required for mind control) becomes ingrained into a families genetics (hence the CIA 'aquiring' multigenerational incest abused children with Multiple Personality Disorder for their genetic mind control studies/MONARCH). The same family line may also be targetted for their genetics.
"This is one of the most important links in my opinion. In particular people seem to get on the radar when they’re the offspring of those who work for military intelligence. Time and again you’ll find that so many abductees/mind control targets have/had parents (usually fathers), in the military, and often times working in the capacity of national security and intelligence. Air Force, Army and Naval intelligence, NASA and NSA. My own father was Navy tech personnel, reporting to the NSA for intelligence during Vietnam."
Another parallel is abductions occuring since a young age. The minds of mind control victims are purposely shattered with trauma at a very young age to split their core personality. Abductees almost always recall reoccuring abductions throughout their life, this is covering them being taken and further programmed periodically.
"Many of the women had alien communications very early in their lives. Amy had messages and ideas impressed into her mind from as young as four, and like Polly she felt the impact of these influences in her early teen years. She also felt that the aliens implanted or stored information within the subconscious, in 'packets' of knowledge, reminiscent of the 'pockets' of knowledge the aliens told me I possessed in 1980."
'Missing time' is often reported.
"EDOM (Electronic Dissolution of Memory) is nothing more than 'missing time' itself — the erasure of memory from consciousness through the blockage of synaptic transmission in certain areas of the brain. By jamming the brain’s synapses through a surfeit of acetylcholine, neural transmission along selected pathways can be effectively stilled. According to the proponents of RHIC-EDOM, acetylcholine production can be affected by electromagnetic means. (Modern research in the psycho-physiological effects of microwaves confirm this proposition.)"

2024.02.19 22:00 blit_blit99 UFOs and "Time". Here is a compilation of claims that "time" can be manipulated by UFO occupants.

Cynthia Appleton , Birmingham, England. In 1957 she claimed she was visited by tall, blonde (human looking) UFO occupants. One of the things she claimed she was told by them, was that "time" isn't real. See
https://www.ufoinsight.com/aliens/agendas/albert-bender-sought-elements-earths-oceans
One of the most intriguing details offered to Appleton during the subsequent visits were details on the nature of time. According to the notes of Dr. Dale, Appleton was informed that “time did not exist” and it was, in fact, a “philosophical invention by mankind”.

His next visit was much later, in fact 6 months later. Head of Canada’s Secret Project Magnet Wilbert Smith worked as a senior radio engineer for the Canadian government’s Department of Transport in the late 1940s and 50s. He was the reason behind the radio communication between Canada and the United States at that time. (snip) In 1950, the Canadian UFO study program Project Magnet was established by Transport Canada under the supervision of Mr. Smith. The government funded the project for four years, but he received informal funding after. In 1952, he set up an observatory at Shirley’s Bay to study the findings of UFO sightings under Project Magnet. In 1961, he gave a speech at the Vancouver Area UFO Club, where he claimed to had been in contact with aliens, referring to them as “the boys topside.” Furthermore, he said that the aliens had explained to him that the speed of light is not constant, and time works differently in the universe, not chronological ticking that people can imagine on Earth, but a “field function” that changed throughout the universe, and which could be altered.

Through a window ‘embedded in a metal wall’, Castillo observed the craft’s propulsion system. ‘In the innards of the ship, a group of three great diamonds or crystals rotated slowly around a vertical shaft extending from ceiling to floor, which turned also, in the opposite direction. The colors and shades of the shaft surface were like a kaleidoscope of pure crystal.’ ‘Those are crystals, not diamonds,’ explained the commander. ‘We call them “memory crystals”; they are programmable and receive information from the “main transducer” [the rotating shaft]. We also call them “living crystals”. We obtain them on a certain planet, where they grow and reproduce.’ The crystals also rotated around themselves, Castillo noticed, united to a base that also turned around the main transducer. He calculated the crystals to be around 70 centimetres in diameter. His request to increase the speed of the crystals was turned down flatly. ‘It is not possible while you are here on board,’ the commander explained. ‘If we speed up the rotation for only two minutes, when you get off the ship, more than 200 Earth years will have elapsed.’

This is an intriguing description. Is eye-to-eye contact important in such telepathic communication and the transferring of images that surfaces in numerous abduction encounters and other close contact incidents? (snip) Trim would further state, years later, that it appeared to her as though some kind of “energy” had surrounded them during the encounter that appeared to stop time. Interesting drawing from Ariel School 1994 UFO case in Zimbabwe. Drawing made in German newspaper Magazin 2000. Other than kids drawings this one is one of the best drawings ever made on this subject. It shows three beings and just like kids said, one being has hair like a human, meanwhile other were bald like typical greys. One also did show up on the top of the craft. Kids stated that at least one being was moving like in slow motion (the second being on this drawing who appears to move), appearing in one place and then moving very slowly like during replay in the football match. After the moment the being reappeared again in the same place and started moving from the beginning. Btw the same description of being moving in slow motion was made by alledged Trinity 1945 case witnesses.

November 16, 1973: Our next trace case took place on the 16th of November, 1973, at about 7:00 p.m. when Richard T. and David F. (both they and their parents requested anonymity), eleven years of age, were playing outside near their homes in Lemon Grove, California. They went down into a vacant area next to the group of four houses where they live. (snip) At the same time the object, which had been about 18 inches off the ground, rose up to about 3 or 4 feet from the ground, whereupon a row of green lights around the peripheral rim of the craft started to blink in sequence and the object began to rotate, making a sound which resembled "woooo-shooooo-woooo-shooooo." The rate of rotation became very high with the red light blinking on and off, then the red light went out momentarily, came back on, and the object rose into the air, still making the sound. The boys, by then frightened, started to run, feeling chills and a tingly feeling, weak "like we were going to black out or die," and "like we were running in slow motion." They said the object took off toward the southwest, and after they had left the field and got to the street, they saw it disappear into the clouds.

Andy: Can you elaborate on mankind versus mankinds? Lue: Yeah, wow. You’re getting to some really good and personal questions. We live in a 3 dimensional world where time is a function of the 4th dimension and we experience time as being linear. Space and time are joined together and that space/time is flexible. The linear universe that we experience really isn’t (linear). Uses the cigar analogy about time again. Cherry is the present. Everything we humans experience happens at that infinitesimally small moment where the future is transitioning into the past But what if there were “things” that had the ability to experience where the “present” was a much bigger cherry, a much bigger transition, where more elements of the future and the past are experienced as “the present” and can also do that physically. What if there were species out there that experience the universe with an extra level of dimension? Is it possible that some of these UAP have the ability that we experience them when they are right here right now and every other time we don’t because we are simply not intersecting with that extradimensional space of time? In the cherry of the cigar, it doesn’t burn evenly. There is an overlap between the past, present, and future. Quantum theory is beginning to show some of the models for that.

Corso stated that the great rocket scientist, Dr Hermann Oberth, ‘suggests we consider the Roswell craft . . . not a spacecraft but a time machine’.21 Oberth speculated that ‘This was a time/dimensional travel ship that didn’t traverse large distances in space. Rather, it “jumped” from one time/space to another or from one dimension to another and instantly returned to its point of origin.’

It looks like Nikola Tesla may have worked on time travel before modern science even thought of its possibility. In 1895, as per his reports, he suggested that time and space could be influenced by magnetic fields. The alleged idea of altering alter time and space by magnetic fields resulted in a number of experiments that led to the infamous Philadelphia experiment which is considered a deception by many. It is said that while working on Nikola Tesla’s Time Travel Experiment he found brainstorming results. Tesla discovered that the space-time barrier could be changed using the magnetic fields and accessed by forming a trojan horse which will ultimately lead to a different time. Though, reports of 1895 state that a witness saw Tesla at a coffee shop looking stressed and disturbed. His assistant stated that Tesla was almost electrocuted by a machine as he was trying to solve the time travel riddle. After nearly dying, Tesla asserted that he had found himself in a whole different time and space window, where he could see the past, present, and future all at once while staying within the artificial magnetic field created by him.

He seemed to be familiar with every aspect of our world. ‘How could you possibly know what happened a hundred years ago unless you were there?’ I asked him.” “Well, it is a question of time,” he responded. “Your whole concept of time is a man-made thing. Time, according to you, is being born, living, and dying; getting up, working, and going to bed. That is your concept of time.” Leonard pointed out that, from his personal experience, he however had always been aware that there is “another time—a time where you sort of step out of yourself.” “Yes, then you are going into time,” came Khan’s cryptic response, alluding briefly to a “sixth dimension,” which meant nothing to Leonard at the time. (snip) “It’s logical to follow. Who’s going to believe you? The only important point is that you are aware of time. And we know this.” “Come off it. How could you possibly know?” “We have an inbuilt register. If we walk near people, we can calculate the intelligence level of that person. You’re very intelligent, and you have six senses. We have nine. . . .”

On emerging, the men found that several days had passed, whereas they were certain not more than a day had elapsed. “Our friends then told me,” he explained, “that inside their base, gravity was twenty percent less than usual; therefore, one could move more easily [and] the heart beats with less strain.”

In hundreds of UFO reports we find that the entities asked questions about time: 'What is your time cycle?' 'What time is it?' 'Where are we in time?' In a way, they are as confused as the microbe would be if you tried to explain the boy's time frame to it. They have entered our reality from a very different time field. The boy could watch several generations of microbes in a single afternoon. Perhaps the UFO energies can also span many human generations and move as easily from out past to our future as the boy's needle. They are extradimensional, not extraterrestrial.

Gordon Novel, who claims to have had access to classified technologies, also reported the connection between gravity shielding and time travel in an interview with Kerry Cassidy of Project Camelot. A UFO is probably very much like the cars back in “Back to the Future,” a flying time machine. They’re capable of going backwards and forwards in time. . . . To negate gravity, you’ve got to negate time. So time is the power . . . of the bird. . . . We don’t believe [its power] comes from space or zero point. We believe it comes from time, purely and simply, and that energy and time are the same thing.

Your brain is there to operate your body. You’re in a vessel here. It’s an illusionary vessel that people don’t realize, because we’re creating it in microseconds. From one second to the other, these shutters are opening and shutting, creating all this reality you see around you, but it doesn’t really exist. It’s all spirit. It’s all energy, but we’re creating it. . . . People don’t realize that Man in a sense created time. Time doesn’t exist, in essence. It does when we create it, and we have a beginning and an end to something. We call that time. But in a greater reality, there is no time*.*

Time Distortions In one case from Kent, U.K., in 1966, a witness named David reported a variety of these effects all at once. As he reached a bridge over a stream, in a wooded area near his girlfriend’s house, he saw a group of teenage boys running in terror from something that seemed to be chasing them. David then felt everything become very quiet, as if his ears had become closed off. There was numbness and a strange depression, accompanied with a sense of heaviness and moving his head in slow motion. His girlfriend felt giddy, and the voices of the teenagers now sounded like they were coming through an echo. A white mist then swirled around them, and time seemed to slow down. When David tried to move his body, it seemed to “take forever”— and his cigarette smoke spiraled upward far too slowly. Sounds traveled too slowly and seemed hollow. His girlfriend clung to him in hysterics, and the teenage motorcycle gang now appeared to be moving in slow motion. The heaviness eventually left, causing their ears to pop—like in an airplane that was landing. Even though the whole process seemed to take hours, his cigarette had not burned down any farther when it finally stopped.

It occurred one early morning on April 1977 near Putre, in the Chilean highlands. Eight young soldiers were keeping watch around a fire when they were startled by the appearance of two ghostly lights of unknown origin in the vicinity of some nearby hills. One of them disappeared behind a small hill while the other placed itself at the foot of a mountain, flying over the area and engaging in approach-and-retreat maneuvers before the eyes of the disconcerted soldiers. After three minutes of terror, corporal Armando Valdés, in charge of the squad, walked away from his companions toward the light. The young conscripts watched him vanish from sight for 15 minutes, during which their calls for him and their search yielded no result. At a given moment, they heard the subofficers voice pleading for help, and they saw him walking toward them unsteadily. He had a dense growth of beard despite having been clean-shaven just minutes earlier, and the calendar on his digital watch was five days fast. The startled conscripts settled him near the fire. And that was when he said, in a strange voice: You will never know who we are, nor where we come from, but we will return again.

SUBJECT: ALIEN INTERVIEW, 25. 7. 1947, 1st Session "Before you can understand the subject of history, you must first understand the subject of time. Time is simply an arbitrary measurement of the motion of objects through space. Space is not linear. Space is determined by the point of view of an IS-BE when viewing a object. The distance between an IS-BE and the object being viewed is called "Space". Objects, or energy masses, in space do not necessarily move in a linear fashion. In this universe, objects tend to move randomly or in a curving or cyclical pattern, or as determined by agreed upon rules. History is not only a linear record of events, as many authors of Earth history books imply, because it is not a string that can be stretched out and marked like a measuring tool. History is a subjective observation of the movement of objects through space, recorded from the point of view of a survivor, rather than of those who succumbed. Events occur interactively and concurrently, … (snip) All of these interactions are concurrent and simultaneous. Although time runs consecutively, events do not happen in an independent, linear stream. In order to view and understand the history or reality of the past, one must view all events as part of an interactive whole. Time can also be sensed as a vibration which is uniform throughout the entire physical universe.

The rate of rotation became very high with the red light blinking on and off, then the red light went out momentarily, came back on, and the object rose into the air, still making the sound. The boys, by then frightened, started to run, feeling chills and a tingly feeling, weak "like we were going to black out or die," and "like we were running in slow motion." They said the object took off toward the southwest, and after they had left the field and got to the street, they saw it disappear into the clouds.

“You’re not aware of time,” the stranger commented. “You seem to be more acutely aware of that than most people.” “Well, time is important,” replied Leonard, somewhat bemused. “That’s a very true statement,” replied the man. “But people’s concept of time is entirely different.” (snip) At one point in the conversation, Khan implied that he came from another world. “His knowledge of things was so overwhelming,” Leonard emphasized. “It seemed as though he knew everything pertaining to our world: its formation, the psychology, the arts, literature, culture—not only our cultures but cultures I’d never heard of.

From the book The Cosmic Question (The Eighth Tower) by researcher John Keel:

Quote from inventor Otis T. Carr, who worked with Nikola Tesla:

The Valdés Case the most paradigmatic episode of Chilean ufology has been revisited in La noche de los centinelas (The Night of the Sentries), an 8-year -long journalistic investigation that looks into background events, locates the protagonists and “uncovers more than one surprise, according to the author.

From the book Alien Interview by Matilda O'Donnell MacElroy (claimed she was a nurse after the events of the Roswell UFO crash, and was chosen to communicate with the surviving UFO occupant)

And if you don’t, someone else will do it for you…” “We are literally creating reality and everything is happening everywhere all at once..” “And UFOs kind of sit at the nexus of all that. That’s how I got into all of this stuff, cause I was all like, I wonder about the machines, and who are the pilots? But really what you learn is that these machines aren’t coming from other planets, they’re coming from time.”

Cynthia Appleton , Birmingham, England. In 1957 she claimed she was visited by tall, blonde (human looking) aliens.
Dale, Appleton was informed that “time did not exist” and it was, in fact, a “philosophical invention by mankind”.
and

His next visit was much later, in fact 6 months later. Once more, late in the afternoon of August 18, 1958, while Mrs. Appleton was bringing in her washing, the visitor simply walked into the open door. Apparently by way responding to her enquiry as to why he had taken so long to return, the visitor obscurely replied, “What is time? Time is nothing. Time is nonexistent. Time is only the passing from one day to another. The beginning of a blossom. It is blooming and then it is the fading of the blossom. This is the only reason why time is known.”

Enrique Castillo Rincón, November 1973. Taken aboard a UFO by UFO occupants.
Through a window ‘embedded in a metal wall’, Castillo observed the craft’s propulsion system. ‘In the innards of the ship, a group of three great diamonds or crystals rotated slowly around a vertical shaft extending from ceiling to floor, which turned also, in the opposite direction. The colors and shades of the shaft surface were like a kaleidoscope of pure crystal.’
‘Those are crystals, not diamonds,’ explained the commander.

Janus began by pointing out that Man was 'now striving to break his earthly bonds and travel to the moon and the planets beyond'. He continued:
But flight to the stars is Man's ultimate dream, although knowledge of the vast distances involved in interstellar flight makes it appear only a dream. Yet perhaps after a hundred years or so . . exploration of his own solar system may be complete and it is just not in Man's nature to stop there . . . This is an intriguing description. Is eye-to-eye contact important in such telepathic communication and the transferring of images that surfaces in numerous abduction encounters and other close contact incidents?

Trim would further state, years later, that it appeared to her as though some kind of “energy” had surrounded them during the encounter that appeared to stop time. During the hypnosis session, Betty began to behave as if someone else had taken control of her body and was telepathically speaking thru her. She stated that her responses were not her own & were coming from another being, thru her. At points she spoke in an unknown language and was also saying various numbers that no one could figure out what they pertained to. It seemed like she became a communication conduit between Joseph (the interviewer), and some another being, responding to Joseph’s questions.]
Joseph: Is this sun explosion in the future or in the past?
Betty: The future and the past are the same as today to them.
Joseph: Does time exist?
Betty: Time to them is not like our time, but they know about our time.
Joseph: They recognize time as our dimension, but they have something else, through time?
Betty: Yes, they can reverse time.
Joseph: They can reverse our time?
Betty: Uh-huh.
Fred: Are the beings able to come here again?
Betty: They travel freely. They travel freely throughout our whole earth.
(snip)
Joseph: They come from different planets, then? They don’t come from the same planet? Is that correct?
Betty: Some. Some come from realms where you cannot see their hiding place. Some come from the very earth.
Joseph: This very earth?
Betty: Yes, there is a place on this very earth that you do not know of.
Fred: Can they see the future?
Betty: Definitely.
(snip)
Fred: What is the most favorable time and place?
Betty: Time with us is not your time.
The place with you is localized.
It is not with us. Cannot you see it?

From the book Earth an Alien Enterprise by British UFO researcher Timothy Good:
Leonard Mantle, London, 1968 (alleged encounter with a human looking UFO occupant)
“You’re not aware of time,” the stranger commented. “You seem to be more acutely aware of that than most people.”
“Well, time is important,” replied Leonard, somewhat bemused.
“That’s a very true statement,” replied the man. “But people’s concept of time is entirely different.”
(snip)
At one point in the conversation, Khan implied that he came from another world.
“His knowledge of things was so overwhelming,” Leonard emphasized. “It seemed as though he knew everything pertaining to our world: its formation, the psychology, the arts, literature, culture—not only our cultures but cultures I’d never heard of. He seemed to be familiar with every aspect of our world.
How could you possibly know what happened a hundred years ago unless you were there?’ I asked him.”
“Well, it is a question of time,” he responded. “Your whole concept of time is a man-made thing. Time, according to you, is being born, living, and dying; getting up, working, and going to bed. That is your concept of time.”
Leonard pointed out that, from his personal experience, he however had always been aware that there is “another time—a time where you sort of step out of yourself.”
Yes, then you are going into time,” came Khan’s cryptic response, alluding briefly to a “sixth dimension,” which meant nothing to Leonard at the time.
(snip)
“It’s logical to follow. Who’s going to believe you? The only important point is that you are aware of time. And we know this.”
“Come off it. How could you possibly know?”
“We have an inbuilt register. If we walk near people, we can calculate the intelligence level of that person. You’re very intelligent, and you have six senses. We have nine. . . .”

Professor Stefano Breccia, Italy, 1970s (alleged encounters with groups of human looking UFO occupants)
In April 1972, Bruno, Giancarlo, and two other friends, Assad and Gustav, were re-invited to a base under the beautiful mountain chain of the Monti Sibillini National Park in Umbria. On emerging, the men found that several days had passed, whereas they were certain not more than a day had elapsed.
“Our friends then told me,” he explained, “that inside their base, gravity was twenty percent less than usual; therefore, one could move more easily [and] the heart beats with less strain.”
**********
From the book The Cosmic Question (The Eighth Tower) by researcher John Keel:
In hundreds of UFO reports we find that the entities asked questions about time: 'What is your time cycle?' 'What time is it?' 'Where are we in time?' In a way, they are as confused as the microbe would be if you tried to explain the boy's time frame to it. They have entered our reality from a very different time field. The boy could watch several generations of microbes in a single afternoon. Perhaps the UFO energies can also span many human generations and move as easily from out past to our future as the boy's needle. They are extradimensional, not extraterrestrial.

From the book The Source Field Investigations by David Wilcock:
Gordon Novel, who claims to have had access to classified technologies, also reported the connection between gravity shielding and time travel in an interview with Kerry Cassidy of Project Camelot.
A UFO is probably very much like the cars back in “Back to the Future,” a flying time machine. They’re capable of going backwards and forwards in time. . . . To negate gravity, you’ve got to negate time. So time is the power . . . of the bird. . . . We don’t believe [its power] comes from space or zero point. We believe it comes from time, purely and simply, and that energy and time are the same thing.

Quote from inventor Otis T. Carr, who worked with Nikola Tesla:
Your brain is there to operate your body. You’re in a vessel here. It’s an illusionary vessel that people don’t realize, because we’re creating it in microseconds. From one second to the other, these shutters are opening and shutting, creating all this reality you see around you, but it doesn’t really exist. It’s all spirit. It’s all energy, but we’re creating it. . . . People don’t realize that Man in a sense created time. Time doesn’t exist, in essence. It does when we create it, and we have a beginning and an end to something. We call that time. But in a greater reality, there is no time.
*************
From the book The Source Field Investigations by David Wilcock:
Time Distortions
In one case from Kent, U.K., in 1966, a witness named David reported a variety of these effects all at once.

From the UFO Casebook website. CaseFiles thru 1979:
The Valdés Case the most paradigmatic episode of Chilean ufology has been revisited in La noche de los centinelas (The Night of the Sentries), an 8-year -long journalistic investigation that looks into background events, locates the protagonists and “uncovers more than one surprise, according to the author.

From the UFO Casebook website. CaseFiles thru 1979:
Later the extraterrestrial added rather cryptically, "I am authorized to answer most of your questions, you see my contact with you was very carefully planned, take it with calm, remember the time factor doesn't matter, this exchange will take only a few minutes of your time, you can ask all the questions you like, if they are concrete I will attempt to answer them.

From the book Alien Interview by Matilda O'Donnell MacElroy (claimed she was a nurse after the events of the Roswell UFO crash, and was chosen to communicate with the surviving alien)
SUBJECT: ALIEN INTERVIEW, 25. 7. 1947, 1st Session
"Before you can understand the subject of history, you must first understand the subject of time.
Events occur interactively and concurrently, …
(snip)
All of these interactions are concurrent and simultaneous. Although time runs consecutively, events do not happen in an independent, linear stream. In order to view and understand the history or reality of the past, one must view all events as part of an interactive whole. Time can also be sensed as a vibration which is uniform throughout the entire physical universe.

From
Quotes:
“On a Quantum level, everything in time is happening at the exact same moment, past, present and future.”
“On a quantum level, the instant you look at something and think about it, and then it imprints in on a universal kind of a hard drive, that someone else can now go to that same location and see the same tree that you put there.”
“So if consciousness is literally the energy that is everywhere, that is omnipotent the way we say god is, it’s what powers the atom, it’s a sea of energy that powers the individual atom.”
“It's all these crazy energy waves that only your brain can tune into.”
“...no, it’s actually physics, it’s literally actually physics, that on a very fundamental basic quantum level, the only way for physical matter to exist is for a human to tranduce the waves into physical matter. And if you don’t, someone else will do it for you…”
“We are literally creating reality and everything is happening everywhere all at once..”
“And UFOs kind of sit at the nexus of all that. That’s how I got into all of this stuff, cause I was all like, I wonder about the machines, and who are the pilots? But really what you learn is that these machines aren’t coming from other planets, they’re coming from time.”

2024.02.06 23:56 throwawayeducovictim Happy Birthday "Dr" Tony Quinn - leader of the EDUCO Cult! 78 Today - Wednesday 7 February! What has the Irish Messianic Cult been up to?

Happy Birthday
--- NEWS ON THE EDUCO CULT --- NEWS ON THE EDUCO CULT ---
Today is the 78th birthday of the leader of the EDUCO Cult "Dr" Tony Quinn!
In the years 2009 to 2012 there was blanket media coverage of the EDUCO Cult and it's leader "Dr" Tony Quinn).
In 2012 there were a number of court-cases which exposed the harassment and intimidation of ex-followers of Quinn, including the chairwoman of an Oil company that Quinn was invalidly appointed as a Director.
Clip from BBC NI's Spotlight 2012 documentary \"Belize Oil\"
(Source)
Since that time there has been little news from the EDUCO Cult.
So what has EDUCO been up to? Well.....

A New Film!

Tony Quinn has a billing in a new documentary "One Night In Millstreet" which retells the story of the 1995 WBO Super-Middleweight Championship fight between Steve Collins and champion Chris Eubank.
Collins had retained Quinn as his "Mind Coach", which was essentially a ruse to fool Eubank into thinking Collins would feel no pain; something that concerned Eubank as he had badly injured Michael Watson in a 1991 fight.
Poster for 2023 film \"One Night In Millstreet\"
An Editor for the film told me that Quinn is interviewed for the film and the makers had access to what he described as the EDUCO archive.
Collins stated on Near FM's "Northside Today" on 23rd October 2023 that the documentary has involved Netflix (mentioned at 0:18:30 in interview).
In other interviews about the documentary Collins is complimentary about Quinn, saying Quinn "was very good, he done a good job".

Ireland

Since so many scandals came to light, EDUCO has been quiet in it's homeland Ireland. Front-groups still operate under the guise of "Mindfulness" training.
There are a number of EducoGyms which members have claimed are a place to recruit people for the EDUCO Seminar... even a Chief of Police!
This year saw acclaimed Crime Journalist Nicola Tallant's celebrate 50 years of the newspaper Sunday World which first exposed Quinn 50 years ago.
Sunday World, 24 February 1974
(Source)
Tallant wrote an article celebrating the paper's anniversary and mentioned Quinn:
I soon found myself creating those front pages with stories about the cult of Tony Quinn’s Educo, where millions of euro was washing in to his promises of financial freedom, weight loss and spiritual awakening
(Source)
The three-times winner of Irish Crime Journalist of the Year also commented on the similarities between Andrew Tate's "Hustler's University", Scientology and EDUCO on Ireland's top podcast "Crime World".
Last year saw the publication of Tallant's fifth book "Cocaine Cowboys" which devoted two chapters to the tragic death of model Katy French. Before her death, French had become connected with Jim Mansfield Jr.
Mansfield himself has become known recently for his connections with the Kinahan Cartel who were sanctioned by the U.S Treasury in 2022. Mansfield was also connected to a follower of Tony Quinn's, Glen O'Callaghan.

(Source)
O'Callaghan has been a member of EDUCO since the 1990s and was pictured with Quinn in 2017.
Glen O'Callaghan and \"Dr\" Tony Quinn in 2017.
In 2022 I wrote here on cults how O'Callaghan had his own bizarre link between the Kinahans AND another Cult-leader on the day the Irish High Court granted authorities to seize a house owned by a Kinahan.

UK

The UK arm of the EDUCO Cult has existed with very little news coverage. In 2005 The Sunday Times did send in an undercover reporter to a London based meeting.
They reported that EDUCO was moving into the UK and was targetting UK children with Quinn's form of Hypnotherapy, or Mindfulness.
Sunday Times, 25 September 2005, p10
(Source / Paywall-free)
A number of EDUCO members still use "Mindfulness" as a front, including now-axed BBC Derby presenter Pam Sidhu. Sidhu has returned to Sabras Radio in Leicester where in 2019 she interviewed two well-known EDUCO recruiters, Babu Shah and Caroline McDonagh, in her short-lived "Sabras Moments" podcast series.
Babu Shah pictured with Martin Forde and \"Dr\" Tony Quinn in 2003.
Shah, who was my co-worker in the late 1990s, imported EDUCO into the UK and was recruiting covertly in the offices of Enterprise Oil. He later went on to recruit Manj Weerasekera who I also knew -- *ahem*. More on how I knew him perhaps next year.
Manj Weerasekera pictured with \"Dr\" Tony Quinn in May 2003.
A BACP registered Psychotherapist, Linda Keen, is another UK follower and, unlike other members, is quite bold in declaring her belief in Quinn's discredited methods.

(Source)
More interesting is how a follower of Quinn from the 1990s has featured in national newspapers in the UK claiming to be a nutritionist with 25 years experience.
Zana Morris has featured in UK newspapers, even appearing in a Times article alongside ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson's sister Rachel Johnson.

(Source / Paywall-free)
Morris first appeared in EDUCO Cult promotional material in the 1990s and was running EDUCO indoctrination classes in Ireland for years before moving to London and opening an EducoGym in Harley Street.
Zana Morris in a 1995 EDUCO \"Blueprint\" newspaper.
(Source)
The Harley Street gym was also used by Caroline McDonagh (mentioned above) to offer "consultations".
I am told by insiders that McDonagh was charged with directing the UK EDUCO Cult's operations at the behest of leader Quinn.
EDUCO has also been using MeetUp.com to target women who have an interest in Yoga. A member of the Tiny Buddha forum told in 2018 that she was approached online to gauge her interest in attending the EDUCO Seminar.
We have found a number of MeetUp "Events" that all link back to members of EDUCO. The premise given to those approached was a promise of Enlightenment if you attend the remote overseas-hypnotic EDUCO Seminar.
What happens at an EDUCO Seminar? Group Psychosis!
You can listen to a tape from an EDUCO Seminar from the 1990s where attendees, over 12 days, were drawn into group psychosis here.
Last year we found online the 2002 EDUCO promotional film, snippets of which appeared in the 2012 BBC documentary.
In 2009 the Irish newspaper Sunday World described how the video suggested Quinn claimed he could use the techniques of the Third Reich to programme children.
So I was shocked when I saw the whole video and it contained what appears to be someone projecting Hitler out of their head, onto a "TV screen" (described by Quinn as "your life")!
A snippet from the 2002 EDUCO promotional film featuring... Hitler?
What is even more alarming is that the video appears to have been directed by someone who has gone on to direct for Eastenders and Casualty for the BBC!

USA

In 2021 the Frank Report reported that EDUCO was recruiting on Meetup in 3 U.S States.
Mary Ann Malone, who was described by leader Quinn as looking "after the financial side of things", was found recruiting in New York, Colorado and Florida.
Mary Ann Malone featured in a June 2021 article on The Frank Report exposing EDUCO's operations in the U.S.
(Source)
Oil company Chairwoman Susan Morrice, who was caught on video offering to gift attendance to an EDUCO Seminar to the Denver student who pleaded with her the most, was found promoting EDUCO at Colorado University and Regis University.
Morrice has been the most fervent EDUCO recruiter of them all -- at least from the multiple videos posted online.
Since this was exposed Morrice has withdrawn from the internet, taking her website down.
SusanMorrice.com today
In October the Denver Post stated Morrice was finding selling her Denver property a challenge, and had to split it into multiple lots to attract potential buyers. Morrice stated she planned to spend more time in Belize.
Just a fortnight ago the Denver Post reported Morrice's glee at new direct flights between Dublin and Colorado. Also mentioned in the article is her EDUCO "handler" Patricia Fitzpatrick who is known to accompany Morrice around the world and is very close to leader Quinn.
Morrice is of note in the UK for being talked about in the House of Lords in 2014 in relation to the harassment and intimidation of BBC journalists who produced the 2012 documentary about the influence Tony Quinn has over her.

Most recent news

Last year a documentary-maker announced they were developing a documentary about EDUCO and has asked for those who have been involved to contact them.
Pam Sidhu, whose husband was exposed recruiting for the EDUCO Cult amongst University of Derby students in 2021, has been axed by BBC Derby.
Sidhu's final broadcast for BBC Radio Derby happened one week after I spoke to BBC journalists about her involvement in promoting the EDUCO Cult and harassing those who spoke out.
Information has come my way that Manj Weerasekera and wife Alex are still very close to leader "Dr" Tony Quinn. As are Sarah Gilhooly and Patricia Fitzpatrick. More on this coming VERY SOON!
\"Dr\" Tony Quinn pictured in 2017 with Patricia Fitzpatrick and Sarah Gilhooly (far-right).
There has been no EDUCO Seminar since Covid lock-down and the official website is still claiming the reason for this is Covid! That might be true, or it might be because we found out who was running the EDUCO website and they don't want anything more to do with it any more.

So... if you've been involved with EDUCO and have a tale to tell please visit Dialogue Ireland who have posted the request from the TV Documentary maker as I am sure they want to talk with you!
------
cults has always been good to me and allowed me to post details of EDUCO and has been part of the reason the Documentary is in development. As such, I want to thank everyone on this Subreddit -- and I hope to have more EDUCO news soon! If not -- see you next year with more updates!

2023.10.12 18:50 Chen_Geller The Tolkien in our Star Wars

The Tolkien in our Star Wars
This is a branching out of a larger research I'm doing, but in investigating the influences on the Star Wars series, I was struck by the influence of Tolkien on George Lucas. This is a topic that was, appearantly, in vogue recently due to the release of Ahsoka.
Just to TL;DR my conclusions: I think there's substantial evidence that sets including Luke's homestead, Anakin's hovel, Yoda's hut are all based directly on Bag-End; that Luke's character in the original film owes something to Bilbo Baggins, and that Old Ben and Yoda owe a good deal to Gandalf. Some scoring and shooting choices in Revenge of the Sith also seem to owe something to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
Now, I'm not going to overstate the case: my research suggests George Lucas was far, far more influenced by EE Smith's Galactic Patrol, John Coleman Burroughs' John Carter of Mars, Ford Beebe and Ray Taylor's Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, and even by Donald Richie's The Films of Akira Kurosawa.
Nevertheless, I found there is a substantial Tolkien influence that I bet fans would find quite interesting, particularly on the original film. Other influences, about on-par with Tolkien's, include Frank Herbert's Dune, Bruno Bettelheim's The Uses of Enchantment, John Ford's The Searchers, and Michael Anderson's The Dam Busters, among others.
Now, I want to be quite clear that I'm not just interested in pointing out every place where there's some sort of parallel between Star Wars and Lord of the Rings: I'm interested in places where I think there's a concrete influence from one to the other.
Of course, its hardly surprising that there should be an influence: Tolkien's works were enormously popular in the US all through Lucas' youth, and in the mid seventies had another boost in popularity following the author's death. New books (The Silmarillion) and new TV and film adaptation were publically announced.
Now, Lucas wrote many early drafts that told several different stories; and had several, different sources each. But the first draft that can truly be regarded as a draft to the film as we know it is a short synopsis he wrote in May 1975, expanded into a proper draft - the third draft - by August.
In this third draft, the character of Old Ben first appears. When he meets Luke, they have the following exchange, please tell me if it reads familiar:
BEN:
Good morning!
LUKE:
What do you mean, ‘good morning’? Do you mean that it is a good morning for you, or do you wish me a good morning, although it is obvious I’m not having one, or do you find that mornings in general are good?
BEN:
All of them altogether.
Shortly after this, Luke presents himself to Ben with a "At your service!"1 Now, around this time, preproduction was really starting to fire-up. Ralph McQuarrie's artwork for Ben started out rather samurai-like but now changes to notably wizard-like:
https://preview.redd.it/xfgmvp999stb1.png?width=708&format=png&auto=webp&s=dfe8a76ae43169f0a4cb8343cea5120ab713ccc1
Also starting around this time was the casting process: having been turned down by Toshiro Mifune, George Lucas went to an actor who would have surely been on anyone's shortlist to play Gandalf: Sir Alec Guinness. Indeed, when Guinness got the draft, he noted it "had a touch of Tolkien's" and "suggestions of Tolkien's books." It seems to have played a part in Guinness' accepting of the part, too, being that he told Hamil later that he "always wanted to play a wizard."2
Also starting at this time was the location scout: Lucas had looked through a large number of desert countries, but he decided on Tunisia. What's more, he liked one local place-name, Tatouinne, so much that he used it as the name of his desert planet: previously, it has always been Utapau. Why did he choose Tunisia, though? Production designer John Barry says Lucas "liked Matmata, where people live in these holes in the ground." Robert Watts confirms: "The minute George saw the island of Djerba, he made the decision to film there, which really keyed from the architecture."3 And what does Lucas himself has to say of the architecture?
I think speculative fiction is very valid but they forgot the fairy tales and the dragons and Tolkien and all the real heroes. [...] We found these great things in Tunisia, little grain houses that were four stories high but with little tiny doors, little tiny windows, it was a hobbit village. So we had a whole sequence with these little hobbit-world slum dwellers but we had to cut it out. 4
Now, the place Lucas is talking about isn't actually a place that ended-up in the original film. Its this:
https://preview.redd.it/zrd2daj9bstb1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=5b27f040a696b85be9574e7b2a95cf11221f191a
Now, the script at this point doesn't call for Hobbit holes: it describes normal, above-ground dwellings. But Lucas chose to shoot Luke's homestead in...well, a hole in the ground. In fact, it was something he chose to do in spite of the complication, because Hotel Sidi Driss is obviously NOT in the same location as the salt-flat where the above-ground elements of the homestead were shot: it actually cost more money to splice those two places together, but Lucas did it, evidentally because the Bag End-type imagery was appealing to him.3
When he came back from Tunisia, he threw himself into the casting in earnest. Now, the character of Luke had already appeared in the previous draft. But there are two important differences: in the Second Draft, Luke wasn't yet an orphan: his father and brother are both in the story.5
A second, much more important difference, is that in the second draft, Luke was an anointed, prophecised "Chosen One" in the style of Kimbal Kinnison. And, of course, by the time we get to The Empire Strikes Back, he will again be a "Chosen One." But the reason people liked Luke in 1977 was because he was NOT a chosen one: he was the everyman. Sure, he had a father who was a great warrior, but he wasn't some preordained messiah.5
So, bearing in mind the quote I opened with, what other story do we know in which the hero is an orphaned troglodyte? Why, that's The Hobbit, of course! Bilbo is also an everyman, even though we're told one of his forefathers was said to have married a fairy.6
The lesson was still sinking-in while Lucas was revising the fourth draft, because here, for the first time, Luke dismisses the idea of going on a quest with Ben: "I'm not going to Aldeeran!"7 This is usually the point in the conversation where somebody will namedrop Joseph Campbell, the Monomyth and "Refusal of the Call." But what does Campbell say about this?
Often in actual life, and not infrequently in the myths and popular tales, we encounter the dull case of the call unanswered; for it is always possible to turn the ear to other interests. Refusal of the summons converts the adventure into its negative. Walled in boredom, hard work, or "culture," the subject loses the power of significant affirmative action and becomes a victim to be saved. His flowering world becomes a wasteland of dry stones and his life feels meaningless—even though, like King Minos, he may through titanic effort succeed in building an empire of renown. Whatever house he builds, it will be a house of death: a labyrinth of cyclopean walls to hide from him his Minotaur. All he can do is create new problems for himself and await the gradual approach of his disintegration.8
In other words, "The refusal of the call" in Campbell has nothing to do with the reluctant hero. Instead, that's something Lucas probably got off of Tolkien. Reinforcing the point, shortly prior to this, while Lucas was casting the major roles, he considered casting small people in some of the major roles, including Luke and his aunt and uncle. Really, there's no detectable Campbell influence on ANY of Lucas' drafts or films, but there IS a Tolkien influence, even if its almost exclusively from the opening pages of The Hobbit.9
So, there's clearly a little of Bilbo Baggins in Luke, there's something of Bag End both in Luke's homstead and Anakin's hovel, and there's a lot of Gandalf in Old Ben, clearly. In fact, Guinness had sat with Lucas to rewrite Ben's dialogue to make him more stoic like he must have felt a Gandalf should be. The more "quirky" take on the Gandalf character, found in the third draft, was basically taken after Ben's death and applied to Yoda.10
The Yoda segment of The Empire Strikes Back again owes something to Tolkien. Before The Empire Strikes Back, Ralph McQuarrie had declined a job on Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings. So when we look at his design for Yoda's hut, its not stretching anybody's imagination to suggests he and Lucas had again thought of a Hobbit hole. What's more, there's something of a parallel between Luke's test at the cave and Galadriel's mirror: "What's in there?" Asks Luke "Only what you take with you." Well, in the episode The Mirror of Galadriel, not only is Frodo tested in a similar vein, but there's also the line: "There is in her and in this land no evil, unless a man bring it hither himself." The inspiration may have been via Bakshi's film: "Lothlorien is a place of healing. There's no evil in it. Unless a man brings evil there with him."11
The Hobbit was also an influence on the marketing, with one of the posters for Star Wars having been devised by then-famed Tolkien illustrators, The Brothers Hildebrandt. The Hobbit is not as big an influence on Return of the Jedi, except in the "don't judge a book by its cover" aspect of the Ewoks perhaps. Lucas may have chosen to design Jabba and his guards the way he had, thinking of the Goblin King: he had rejected designs that looked too much like a sand worm from Dune, or like the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. Almost immediately afterwards, George Lucas wrote a story outline for a TV movie based on the Ewoks. The first of these was later rebranded as "Caravan of Courage" but was originally released simply as "An Ewok Adventure." In it, a boy (i.e. Bilbo) and a group of Ewoks (Dwarves), including a wizard and an ax-wielding Ewok, set on the quest to the lonely mountain, where they must slay the evil Gorax (i.e. Smaug). The quest entails a wolf attack, and even a giant spider!
What's more, An Ewok Adventure and its sequel Battle for Endor - with Wilford Brimley ever more the Gandalf-type - were both effectively a dry-run for Willow: the quest in the Ron Howard film is very similar to the one in An Ewok Adventure, while Battle for Endor features both a clear antecedent to Bavmorda AND a sneak attack on the evil castle almost identical to the one found in Willow. I don't think there's a need to recapitulate how Willow is like The Hobbit, of course...
Except for Anakin's hovel, the influence of Tolkien on the first two prequels is not too overt, although you could say there's something of Gandalf yet again in Qui Gon (and Yoda). But by Revenge of the Sith, something happened: George Lucas had seen and liked Sir Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy. In fact, Lucas had been shooting the second and third prequels nearby in Australia, using some of the same cast members. He had clearly used the original soundtrack album of The Fellowship of the Ring as a temporary track, because John Williams' track "Anakin's Dark Deeds," exhibits clear similarities to "The Treason of Isengard": Its not just the cooing boy choir, but also the bass-drum strokes underneath.12
On a visual level, too: Star Wars is characterized by fairly traditional establishing shots. But in Revenge of the Sith, these are often replaced with "flyovers" where the camera zooms over, say, Padme's apartment or the opera house. Jackson himself remarked on a similar trend in the concurrent Harry Potter films: "[The Chamber of Secrets] was done after Fellowship. Look at the difference in the Hogwarts shots from one to two. In the first one they are kind of static. In the second one they are going in through windows. You think, somebody has seen our film."13

2023.09.29 12:53 rusticgorilla Three cases of police brutality go on trial: Elijah McClain, Manny Ellis, and Tony Timpa

Housekeeping:
Three high-profile trials of police officers who killed citizens are underway after years of delay.

Colorado: Elijah McClain

Over four years ago, three Aurora Police officers violently detained 23-year-old Elijah McClain while out for a walk, allegedly believing the young Black man to be a “suspicious” person:
One officer approached Mr. McClain, who was listening to music, and told him to stop walking. Mr. McClain stopped after several commands but said he had a right to continue toward home.
According to the camera footage, the officer responded, saying he had a right to stop Mr. McClain for looking suspicious, and grabbed him by the arms. As another officer approached, Mr. McClain can be heard saying: “I am an introvert, please respect the boundaries that I am speaking. Leave me alone.”
Though Mr. McClain had not committed a crime, officers immediately restrained him, telling him to stop resisting when he put his arms up to his chest and to “stop tensing up.” The footage shows Mr. McClain pleading with the officers to let go of him, and trying to get out of their grip.
The officers eventually brought him to the ground, claiming he had reached for one of their guns while they were pinning him against a wall to handcuff him. The body camera footage does not show this, officers said, because their cameras had fallen off into the grass.
One of the officers, Nathan Woodyard, twice applied a chokehold to McClain after he was already in handcuffs, causing him to lose consciousness.
...while he was detained, Mr. McClain was clearly in distress. After officers restrained him on the ground, he vomited several times, for which he apologized, saying, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to do that, I can’t breathe correctly.”
An officer said in the body camera footage that officers had “put him out” with a carotid hold twice, “at least once successfully,” meaning Mr. McClain had lost consciousness.
When paramedics arrived, officers told them that McClain was “acting crazy” and had “incredible, crazy strength.” The paramedics gave him what was described as a “therapeutic” dose of ketamine—but in reality was about 150-170 mg too much for McClain’s weight. McClain was pronounced brain dead and died three days later.
After two years of delay and internal attempts to shield the officers from consequences, a grand jury ultimately indicted three officers—Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, and Randy Roedema—and two paramedics—Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec—on 32 total counts of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.
The trial of two officers, Rosenblatt and Roedema, began last week. During opening arguments, their defense team argued that officers had reason to stop McClain because he was acting suspiciously in a high-crime area. According to the defense, the officers acted appropriately and are not to blame for McClain’s death—the fault actually lies with the paramedics who gave him ketamine, they argued.
However, a pulmonologist testified that the chokeholds used by officers could have caused McClain’s death absent the ketamine:
Officers put him in two carotid holds, which commonly cause people to eventually vomit if they lose consciousness and then regain it. McClain started vomiting and he threw up into his mask. Officers didn’t remove it until a few minutes later.
“It was a large amount,” he said, noting he inspected that mask. “In my medical opinion, certainty … this is a very high-risk situation. The more you vomit, the more risk of aspiration.”
Beuther said McClain was aspirating, or breathing vomit into his lungs, during that time. Prosecutors played the body camera footage at a loud volume to hear McClain’s respiratory struggle and breathing and sickness throughout.
The trial will continue next week.

Washington: Manuel Ellis

Manuel Ellis was walking home from a convenience store just before midnight in March 2020 when he encountered Tacoma police officers Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins. The story, according to police, was that Ellis abruptly attacked them while they were sitting in their car:
Collins, who was driving the patrol SUV, called out to Ellis and asked him why he was in the road.
Both officers said Ellis jogged over to their patrol car and was sweating profusely, something they found unusual since it was cold outside; the temperature was 41 degrees…After calling out to Ellis, Collins told him to wait on the sidewalk and they would help. Instead, the officers say Ellis walked to the passenger door and threatened to punch Burbank in the face.
Burbank quickly rolled his window up just before Ellis punched the window up to three times, records say. Ellis reached for the door handle. Burbank locked it. That’s when police say Ellis turned towards Collins, who had gotten out of the patrol car, and faced him in a “fighting stance” with clenched fists.
“As soon as I realized that he had focused on Officer Collins and was probably about to attack him or start fighting him, I used my door to actually door check him and hit him with the door to draw his attention away from Officer Collins and kind of divert him away from that,” Burbank told investigators.
There is no body camera footage of the incident because Tacoma police did not wear cameras at the time. Instead, most of what we know about the confrontation comes from eyewitness accounts, cell phone video, and security camera video—and all of these sources contradict the officers’ version of events. According to witnesses interviewed by the Washington Attorney’s General office, Ellis had “a peaceful, apparently respectful conversation” with the officers in their car, “with no signs of aggression from Ellis.” As Ellis turned to walk away, witnesses said Burbank “abruptly swung open the passenger door of the car, striking Ellis from behind and knocking him to his knees.” Both officers then got out of the car and attacked him:
The video from S.M., the woman sitting in her car behind COLLINS and BURBANK, 26 starts 46 seconds after 11:21 PM. When it begins, BURBANK can be seen wrapping his arms around Ellis, lifting him into the air, and driving him down into the pavement, striking at him 2 with one of his fists as he does so. Ellis can then be seen curling his legs in towards his body, as BURBANK backs away from him. The bag from the 7-11 that Ellis had been carrying just a few seconds earlier can be seen drifting away, pushed by that night's gusty winds. COLLINS then moves in towards Ellis and brings his weight down onto him. With Ellis underneath him, COLLINS begins striking Ellis's head with his fist. Meanwhile, BURBANK draws his taser gun and walks close in towards Ellis. COLLINS can be seen on S.M.'s video striking Ellis's head four times, with Ellis screaming after each strike…
At this point-56 seconds after 11:21 PM—the pizza delivery driver (S.C.)'s phone begins recording. That video begins by showing COLLINS, now behind Ellis, wrapping his arm around the front of Ellis's neck, as BURBANK takes aim with his taser gun. COLLINS then locks his hands together while squeezing the arm around Ellis's neck, applying what is called a "lateral vascular neck restraint," or "LVNR."
The witnesses all said that Ellis did not defend himself as officers repeatedly tased and choked him. After a third officer, Timothy Rankine, arrived on scene, they hogtied Ellis, applied their full body weight on his back, and placed a spit hood on his head. All three officers ignored obvious signs that Ellis was suffocating:
Around this time, 21 seconds after 11:25 PM, another officer on the scene, Sgt. Michael Lim, took to his radio to tell responding officers that they could slow their approach to the scene. As Sgt. Lim did so, Ellis can be heard in the background, speaking his last known words, the same desperate plea he had been repeating throughout the attack: "Can't breathe." "Can't breathe."
"Once that hobble was on he went quiet, he did not move," recalled Lt. Anthony Messineo, a 19-year veteran with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department who responded to the scene and was interviewed later that night. Ellis then began to "snore"—"[t]hat agonal breathing," Lt. Messineo said later. They sounded to him like a person's last breaths, explaining that when "someone is dying and they have the agonal breathing, their last breaths.... That's what I heard."
Almost 10 minutes later, still hogtied and under the weight of Officer Rankine, EMTs arrived. Attempts to resuscitate Ellis were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation into Ellis’ death was handled by the Pierce County Sheriff's department, which accepted the officers’ statements as fact and appeared to help cover up what actually happened. Gov. Jay Inslee eventually ordered the Washington State Patrol to launch a new investigation into Ellis' death. Meanwhile, the Tacoma police officers refused to be interviewed or questioned by State Patrol investigators and remained on duty until June 2020, when they were placed on paid administrative leave. They continue to receive their salaries to this day.
In May 2021, AG Bob Ferguson charged officers Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins with second-degree murder, and charged officer Timothy Rankine with first-degree manslaughter. Jury selection began last week, with opening statements slated to start October 2.

Texas: Tony Timpa

A civil trial over the death of Tony Timpa under the knee of a Dallas police officer finally concluded this week, over 7 years since the initial encounter.
Timpa, 32, called 911 for assistance during a mental health episode. He informed the dispatcher that he was experiencing “a lot of anxiety,” was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and hadn’t taken his medication. Supervising Police Sergeant Kevin Mansell and Officers Dustin Dillard, Danny Vasquez, and Domingo Rivera arrived on scene to find Timpa already handcuffed by two private security guards.
Timpa was yelling “help me” and “you’re going to kill me!” while rolling back and forth on the grass by the side of the road. Dillard forced Timpa onto his stomach and pressed a knee on Timpa’s upper back in the prone restraint position for over fourteen minutes. “In his protective vest and duty belt, Dillard weighed approximately 190 pounds,” the courts noted.
About 10 minutes into the restraint, Timpa started to show signs of losing consciousness:
He continued to cry out “Help me!” but his voice weakened and slurred. Much of what he said was too muffled to be comprehensible. Forty-five seconds later, he suddenly stilled and was quiet except for a few moans. Then, he fell limp and nonresponsive for the final three-and-a-half minutes of the restraint.
The officers laughed, mocking how he struggled on the ground (body cam footage). When Timpa stopped responding, the officers assumed he was asleep, making jokes about waking him up for school. Shortly after the officers placed Timpa on an ambulance gurney, the paramedics determined he was dead.
A Dallas grand jury indicted Vasquez, Mansell, and Dillard on misdemeanor deadly conduct charges in 2017, finding that “the officers engaged in reckless conduct that placed Mr. Timpa in imminent danger of serious bodily injury.” However, two years later, Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot dismissed the charges after three medical examiners refused to testify that police officers caused Timpa’s death. Vasquez and Dillard remain on the force to this day.
Timpa’s mother sued the officers and the city of Dallas for violating Timpa’s Fourth Amendment rights. District Judge David Godbey, a George W. Bush appointee, ruled that the officers were entitled to qualified immunity because—in his opinion—there was no clearly established case law that the prone restraint position for an extended period of time violated the Constitution. The 5th Circuit reversed, writing that “the state of the law in August 2016 clearly established that an officer engages in an objectively unreasonable application of force by continuing to kneel on the back of an individual who has been subdued.” The U.S. Supreme Court agreed, clearing the way for the officers to go on civil trial.
During the trial last week, the defense argued that Timpa led a secret life of drug and alcohol abuse that caused his death, relying on testimony from the chief medical examiner of Dallas County. Conversely, the plaintiffs had their own witness—pulmonologist Martin Tobin—testify that Timpa died from positional asphyxia caused by the prone restraint.
The Timpas’ attorneys have said Timpa died of positional asphyxia — when people can’t breathe because of their position. Dr. Martin Tobin, a world-renowned pulmonologist, testified last week that body-camera footage shows Timpa was “pancaked” between the officers’ hands and knees and the hard ground, which caused “compressive asphyxia.” …Timpa’s breastbone couldn’t expand, and his diaphragm was pushed against the hard ground, so he couldn’t get oxygen, Tobin said. He squirmed to try to move into a recovery position to breathe, but the officers’ force prevented it, he said.
After 6.5 hours of deliberations, the jury awarded Timpa’s son $1 million in damages but returned nothing for his mom or estate. The panel found that Dillard and Vasquez violated Timpa’s constitutional rights but decided that the two deserve qualified immunity—while their actions were unlawful, a reasonable officer couldn't have been expected to know as much. Mansell was cleared of all wrongdoing. An additional officer on scene, Raymond Dominguez, was also found to have violated Timpa’s rights but, unlike Dillard and Vasquez, was not protected by qualified immunity.

2023.09.08 07:24 AnxiousPanda15 AnxiousPanda's Helpful Guide to Creating a More Coherent OI Kingdom!

With thanks to the mods for reviewing this first and giving the go-ahead! :)
I've been seeing a few people expressing interest in creating OI stories and the like and asking questions about setting and such, so I figured I'd actually put my university education and experience teaching history, creative writing, & PoliSci to good use and make a brief guide to setting-creation using historical settings for those who want love world-building or just want to make a more "realistic" story! :)

Step 1: Choose your Region(s)

Every region of the world has had different socio-political, economic, and religious development and norms -- and a large part of that has to do with geography. Geography is and was a major driver in the development of states and their socio-political and economic arrangements. Western European settings, for instance, ought to be lacking in native spice supplies compared to your world's Indo-Asian region. Why? Because that's one major driver for trade, travel, conquest, and diplomacy. Geography would also determine the general technological priorities of your made-up kingdom -- if based on an island, navigation and ship-building would be major foci of research. If in the cold north, it would likely be forestry and coal mining.
Your chosen region will also affect the style of dress and ethnic makeup. Someone creating an OI based in, for instance, a pseudo-Ottoman Empire would have to create a very diverse Empire -- Slavs, Arabs, Greco-Mediterranean, Turks, Aryans, etc. were all recorded to have been citizens of the Ottoman Empire. By contrast, the Holy Roman Empire of the 12th-15th century would likely be a mix of Germans, Italians, Franks, Poles, Slavs, etc. with some minorities in the mix. Spain in the immediate post-Reconquista era (late 15th+ centuries) would be a mix of Caucasian, Basque, Arabs, and mixed ancestries. Pro-Tip: if you want a historical setting story with a diverse cast, Empires are the way to go. For the worst reasons, sure, but there you go.
The region you choose will also help determine aesthetic if you choose to write with high fidelity, but bear in mind that the closer you get to the Early Modern Period (late 15th-century - 19th century), the more mixed art styles and architecture will get. States communicate all the time regardless of diplomacy. This means that fashions and architecture and even artistic movements will and should cross borders regardless of the will of the ruling classes. If such communication is not happening, there ought to be a geographic and political reason for it -- like, say, the Tokugawa Shogunate's intense isolationist policies combined with Japan's island geography.
If none of our actual regions fit your bill, then you need to make your own. Here's a basic way to do so without relying on tools like Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator:
  1. Determine the size of your world.
    1. Smaller worlds are easier to get around in, which means more concentrated polities/societies, which in turn means more conflict. Smaller =/= more peaceful.
  2. Determine the number of continents on your world.
    1. More continents may mean greater distances to travel and the need to develop sea and land routes over large distances. It may also affect resource distribution, normative divergence, diplomacy, imperialism, and scientific development.
  3. Determine the geographic features of your desired country.
    1. If surrounded by mountains easier to defend, more mining-oriented, probably isolationist to an extent. Very likely to concentrate power in the capital.
    2. Access to the sea Likely to develop along mercantile lines, bigger emphasis on fishing and naval developments. More likely to concentrate power.
    3. Riverlands Probably highly agricultural and dependent on river-based highways for communication and cargo transport. More than likely highly feudalistic.
    4. Desert Likely either nomadic or based around major oases. Governmental type dependent on societal structure (nomadic/semi-nomadic/settled)
Useful Resources:

Step 2: Choose your Era

I cannot stress this enough, but there were no Dark Ages. That is not a term any serious historian uses anymore. Even Medieval Era is of dubious utility these days because of how long and how momentous it was. Instead, in the West, we use the following nomenclature now to descrie the post-Rome/pre-Age of Discovery eras:
And no, there's no mistake in the overlap between Late Antiquity and Early Medieval Ages. The former is largely a transitionary period, so parts of Europe will still have been transitioning from the age of the Roman Empire to the realities of the Early Medieval Ages well after the fall of the Western Roman Empire (480 CE). Honestly, all these dates are approximates at best -- even now, it's still an ongoing debate whether these ranges and names are appropriate. They are also Western Europe-centric. Other regions have other, local means of separating historical periods.
Now then, why choose an era? Because they will help you focus your research on the technological development of your chosen setting. Windmills, for instance, became widely utilized in Western Europe as of the 12th century (meaning High Medieval Ages), but similar concepts predate those by about 300 years (so Late Antiquity). The first Cathedrals and such monumental architecture, for their part, date to the Roman Empire (303 CE by some accounts, so pre-Late Antiquity). Glasses first came about in 1268 CE thanks to Roger Bacon, though "reading stones" and the use of other visual aids likely go back all the way to the Classical Era. The printing press, as some might remember from their history classes, dates to about 1440 CE Germany.
Why are any of these important? Surely, that's just nit-picking, right? Well, yes and no. Obviously, you can just handwave all of this (It's an OI, after all! There's probably going to be magic and other insane stuff!) but it's important to understand that technology drives opportunity. Before the printing press, all books were handwritten. That means that, by necessity, every book was a treasure and had commensurate worth -- they were 100% not the sort of thing commoners would have in their possession unless they were extremely wealthy. If you had a library, you were wealthy beyond belief, a thief, or just insanely lucky. Ledgers and administrative works would also likely not have been in book format, as that would have required expensive and lengthy book-binding processes. Most likely, they might've been scrolls or pieces of parchment strung together -- if that. Even post-printing press, when the cost of books dropped rapidly, the average commoner wouldn't have been wealthy enough to afford one until chapbooks and other forms of popular novels were invented. Most popular fiction would've been communicated through songs, poems, and theater performances.
Another reason this would've mattered is because cost of books translates into cost of education. To be an educated person required substantial book reading, and if one didn't have access to those books, then one's ability to get educated enough to matter in society would've been severely hampered.
Timeframe also helps situate whether or not certain concepts would've existed. Feudalism, for instance, would've lasted since Late Antiquity all the way to the Early Modern Period, but gradually died off with the rise of Absolutism. Medicine pre-Scientific Revolution, for instance, depended greatly on non-critical acceptance of Galenic and Hippocratic medical concepts. Even scientific concepts would've been vastly different from our modern-day understanding, and not for insane reasons. Geocentrism, for example, gets a bad rap because of how silly it sounds to us, but from the perspective of Renaissance scientists, it made perfect sense -- the Sun seemed self-evidently smaller than the Earth (though they later conceded it was larger than the other planets and not so small as first thought), larger objects are harder to move than smaller objects the Earth must be the center around which the Sun and other objects revolve. The fact is, that underlying logic is still correct -- it just so happens that they had no realistic way of calculating the actual size of the Sun, and hence their conclusions were incorrect. Also, everyone since the Classical Era knew the world was round, so you can chuck that idea in the bin right now. Only really uneducated folk or 19th century radically fundamentalist Boers believed otherwise.
Nobility will also change depending on the era. Not just the ranks, but also their composition, standing vis-a-vis each other, and responsibilities. Duchies and Marquisates as we know them from OI's were not always around. Early Medieval nobles and Early Modern nobles had very different lives. A Count/Earl in the Early Medieval Ages, for instance, might've wielded power equal to that of a Duke from the Early Modern Period. At one point, a Count was the third most powerful title of nobility, right below King and Duke. Barons were also no joke -- let's not forget that they led two civil wars in England and were responsible for forcing King John to sign the Magna Carta and Henry III to abide by it.

Step 3: Choose your Society

Every state everywhere is unique in its own way. This means that its society, too, will be unique in their own way. If your OI seeks to emulate one of them, bear in mind that picking and choosing from a real society and altering it in any way could not just constitute appropriation, but also cultural insensitivity. We're all familiar, for instance, about the problematic depiction of non-Asian, non-European cultures in OI's and Eastern literature in general. Arabs are an unfortunate favorite whipping boy in this respect -- usually depicted as being all decked out in either lavish, decadent silk robes or sheer, see-through garments with massive boob-windows.
No. Bad.
If your understanding of Arab dress comes from Aladdin, stop. Simply looking at medieval Islamic art, or even pre-Islamic art, will show that the fashion styles of the Arabian peninsula were quite different. If your Arab-coded princess is wearing what amounts to a silk bra and Jasmine-pants, suffice to say you're not writing/drawing any historical Arab princess, but rather a belly dancing performer.
Hence, if you're going to pick a society, try to stay true to its basic norms and mores. People dressed and behaved a certain way in these historical societies for a reason. Humans don't just adopt societal norms and mores "just because." It may be a good reason or it may be a bad reason, but there will always be a reason. If none of our historical societies fit your bill, then you need to make your own.
If so, here's a basic breakdown of how:
  1. Check your OI country's geography.
    1. The larger a state is, the less centralized it's likely to be because of logistical chokepoints the earlier in history/less technologically developed it is. Do not underestimate how insanely difficult it is to administrate an Empire.
    2. The inverse is also true -- the smaller a state is, the more centralized it will likely be.
  2. The less technologically developed the state is, the more feudal it will be regardless of size.
    1. Simply because of the logistical nightmare that is having to survey and administrate lands that are 3+ days away from your capital. Can you imagine having to wait up to a month for news of how your latest agricultural innovation went? Our ancestors did.
  3. Meaning that the earlier in its history and the less technologically developed your OI country is, the less power your OI Monarch will have.
    1. Feudalism isn't just "You get a title! You get a title! Everyone gets a title!" Every title from the Late Antiquity to Early Modern Era was accompanied by a grant of land proportional to the importance of the title being offered.
      1. This means that if your Duke owns lands that amount to, say, Times Plaza in New York, then that's just pure BS. Dukes and other titles of high-nobility were owners/administrators of vast tracts of land (for example, the entirety of Norfolk at one point).
    2. And where did this land come from? From the King's lands, of course. Meaning that every title the monarch gave out empowered the new noble proportionately to how much it weakened the monarch.
      1. i.e. if the King made Noble A Count of ZYX, a land of about 100 km2, then that's 100km2 the King no longer has direct ownership/administration over.
      2. This is incidentally why virtually all early Chinese dynasties inevitably collapsed.
    3. This means that your OI king ought to be very, very careful with how many titles of nobility exist in their state.
      1. France, for instance, only had 12 titles of peerage, of which only 6 were held by non-clergymen (3 Dukes, 3 Counts).
      2. England, by comparison, had many more over its history, but gradually cut them down and eliminated them as needed. Of the current 11 Duchies, for instance (which are now titular and no longer necessarily carry a grant of land), only 3 qualify as Medieval (Cornwall, Derby, Huntingdon).
  4. Its society, in turn, ought to be molded by its geography and circumstances.
    1. If, for instance, your OI country possesses a large coastline, then maritime fishing and trade will likely play a huge part in its society. Its diet will likely consist of large amounts of seafood, knowledge of mathematics and multiple languages will play a huge role in social advancement, and your society might be very diverse due to interactions with other nations.
    2. On the other hand, if it's an island and fairly separated from the mainland, it'd be understandable for the OI society to be insular, culturally and ethnically homogenous and wary of "outsiders" or intensely curious, welcoming, and mercantile. They might develop as passionate explorers or intense cultural introverts.
  5. Similarly, its social rules and morality will be influenced by its geography.
    1. Societies that develop in adverse conditions tend to focus more on community compacts and burden-sharing (for instance, early Nordic societies) with different, if not fewer limitations on gender roles (for example) and few major gaps in wealth among "citizens."
      1. After all, what's the use on limiting available manpower because of something as silly as who has what genitalia?
      2. There's even a common story told to show Vikings caring so little about nobility that goes that when one demanded that a Viking party kiss his feet as was customary, the Viking grabbed him by the foot and hung him upside down to do so. (The most historical version I've found of this story seems to be about Rollo and the founding of the Duchy of Normandy)
    2. By contrast, societies that are more numerous and agricultural tend to favor stricter social hierarchies as a form of social control.
      1. These are more likely to value titles of nobility, for instance.
  6. Pay attention to religion.
    1. Holy crap, if I had a nickel for every terrible religion I've read in OI's, I wouldn't be rich, but I'd have many nickels. [Insert Dr. Doofenshmirtz meme]
    2. Seriously -- religion plays a massive role in social organization, science, education, and stability and just because one might not like it doesn't make it any less true or important.
      1. The reason the Dark Ages don't exist, in fact, is because the Catholic Church didn't let it happen. They kept all the records from the Roman Empire and pretty much got to work translating them and copying them from their crumbling scrolls, preserving centuries of knowledge. Clergymen were among the most highly educated people on the planet and up until relatively recently (think approx. 100-150 years), almost every major scientist in the world was religious. The Renaissance, for instance, happened because that idiot Petrarch found a bunch of Roman and Greek texts and lamented the passing of the Roman Empire -- where? In a monastery. Who preserved the texts of Galen and Hippocrates that formed the basis of Medieval medicine? The Church. Who subsidized and promoted every major scientific discovery up to and through some of the Renaissance? The Church.
    3. Also -- if you're basing your faith on Catholicism or any of the Judeo-Christian branch of monotheism in general -- there is no such thing as a living, breathing saint. None. That's just not a thing in Judaism, Christianity, or Islam or any of their branches. A person who has a revelation or is chosen by God in life in these faiths is just called a prophet at best -- and I'm pretty sure there must be some readers of those faiths who, upon reading an OI with clear religious iconography from their religions, feel outraged at the depiction of how that pastiche of their faith works.
    4. If you want living Saints, that's Far Eastern traditions and more than likely something out of Daoism's concept of the Xiān (仙/仚/僊), or "immortal." Either way, that's not a Western concept at all.
    5. Thus, if you want to use a faith, do the smart thing and just make up your own.
      1. Pick 1-10 core beliefs, then build up teachings from there.
      2. Make it so that there are anywhere from 1-10 rituals at least.
      3. Determine the number and nature of its gods -- if stuck, note that the earliest religions attributed Gods to natural phenomena and those gods were more human-like than the modern conception of Gods.
      4. Make it the basis/passive enforcer of societal norms.
    6. Also, avoid the use of the Inquisition because, more than likely, it's not being used correctly. It wasn't some sort of boogeyman organization with secret spies everywhere -- it was, at best, a severely underfunded, decentralized organization (in many cases formed ad hoc and just as quickly dissolved) that dealt with issues of major breaches in doctrine.
      1. Not going to Church a couple of times wasn't going to get you an Inquisitorial visit barring extraordinary circumstances (such as the Reconquista). Proclaiming you're a new prophet would 10/10 times.
      2. Most Inquisitions didn't even like each other, either. Venice's Inquisition was known for rejecting extradition requests from Rome, for instance, whenever the individual was a citizen of Venice. The Spanish Inquisition, for its part, was in part deliberately formed to wrest control over Catholic inquisitions in Spanish territories from the Pope.
      3. Execution rates tended to be quite low, too. The infamous Spanish Inquisition, for instance, executed the defendant in 2.7% of its 150,000+ cases over a nearly 400-year period.
    7. Religious authorities were rarely 100% pious. More likely than not, they were very, very worldly.
      1. Quite inevitably, too -- the only way to manage a nationwide or continent-wide or global organization is to be adaptable and flexible and willing to engage in politics and corruption. Popes that were too pious tended to underperform compared to those willing to act more like politicians.
      2. Provincial priests -- meaning those preaching in rural areas -- were typically the more fundamentalists among the clergy, but also the more attuned to peasant concerns. City priests tended to be more in tune with middle/upper class interests and preached accordingly. Monks and friars, on the other hand, could go the entire spectrum of fundamentalist to highly rational.
  7. Create multiple social conflicts.
    1. Not just class-conflicts -- create inter-ethnic, rural vs city, etc. conflicts. No country on earth has ever had a fully peaceful, fully metropolitan populace. Ever. It just does not exist.
    2. If the only conflict your OI state has is nobles vs commoners, then that's just pure fantasy. Commoners could hate each other often enough with as much passion as they hated nobles (see: pogroms, Vendome genocide, Huguenot massacres, etc.).
    3. The larger a state is, the more social conflicts it should have -- though not necessarily to extreme levels. Maybe it's just rivalry. Maybe it's all out feuds. Regardless, a society purely conflicted along class lines is just not a thing because interests often cross class lines.
    4. That common social pyramid where all the commoners are lumped together under the nobility and church? That's based on the Estates-General of France, where all the commoners were lumped together (the "Third Estate") to make it easier for the nobles ("Second Estate") and clergy ("First Estate") to vote against them before the King. In reality, commoners had their own pyramid, with wealthy merchants pretty much being the "commoner nobility" that were often hated just as much, if not more, than actual nobles.
      1. In point of fact, the Medici in Florence were absurdly powerful even before they became nobles.
    5. These social conflicts explain why revolutions are so rare -- because it's never about a single-issue, common-ground polity versus the established order. Rather, it's a veritable smorgasbord of varying interests across class lines that want to change the established order to benefit their own interests and are thus temporarily cooperating with otherwise rival interests in order to achieve the initial goal of changing the ruling elite. The enemy of my enemy schtick.
    6. Thus, in the absence of a major, cross-class crisis affecting the country, revolutions are unlikely to occur and social conflicts will instead draw on other, outstanding issues between potentially cross-class interest groups.
Useful Resources:

Step 4: Create a History

It's simple: all things present happen because of something that happened in the past. I am not hungry now because I ate earlier. You feel sleep deprived now because you stayed awake all night reading a gripping new OI. All things that happen are caused.
And this applies to your characters, too.
We're all familiar with the concept of a backstory -- but are you familiar with history?
In order for a character's motivations and backstory to make sense, it needs to be contextualized within a larger, historical framework. For instance, why was your hypothetical OI ML traumatized by an attempted assassination? Maybe because there's a history of feuding between his family and a rival family based on an old feudal dispute where the king ruled ineffectively. Why? Maybe because the King felt it was more useful to allow the two families to feud, weakening them against royal authority. Why is that necessary? Maybe because, at the time, royal authority had deteriorated quite a bit due to the limitations of feudalistic decentralization and this was their way to re-centralize power a bit.
Etc. Etc. ad nauseam.
Basically, remember that everything, from the state itself to the states surrounding your OI state, to the things people believe, to the places and things they know about, to the songs they sing, to the dreams they have -- all of it is based upon a historical foundation of cause and effect.
Now, that might sound incredibly intimidating, but fret not! It doesn't have to be. If you really don't want to go deep-dive and create a whole 3000-year history, just write the following 5 events at minimum:
  1. Foundation myth/reality of the state.
  2. First major war
  3. First major reform
  4. First major disaster
  5. Most recent major event
After which, you can just fill in the blanks as you go or write new events around these. Either way, it's important to establish at least these because these form the historical basis for your story, but also the basic knowledge of your OI country your OI characters should have. Below are some useful resources in how to create historical records; the Spring and Autumn Annals in particular shows that historical records (particularly in the past) didn't need to be so narrative. They were often little more than just Date + Event.

Sobald man aufhört, treibt man zurück."
Hallo Leute!
U.i.: Bár többes számban kezdtem, egyes számban folytatom innen, hogy személyesebb legyen.
Background-Guard7927 hozzám hasonló újrakezdő volt, de ő fél év alatt felugrott a felsőfokra (hatalmas grat és minden elismerésem🏆) a nemetul.tanulo.hu oldal segítségével, aminek nyelvtani gyűjteményével sok mindent helyre rakott fejben.
Egyrészt feliratkozhatsz napi hírlevélre (lásd előző javaslatok), másrészt könyvet is rendelhetsz a neked tetsző kategóriában.
Youtube-on rengeteg a forrás, én a Dein Sprachcoach-ot (minden szinten) és a Deutsch plus-t (B2-től felfelé) ajánlom.
Ebbe én is belenézek!🥝
Angolul tudóknak PJohn3 a Coffee Break German podcastot ajánlja.
Addig fejben raktam össze szitukat, este zuhanynál elmondtam hangosan, mit csináltam aznap, a tv előtt gyakoroltam a szinkronfordítást (ezt azóta is játszom, jó buli).Más tippem ide nincsen, merj beszélni, talán ezt a korlátot lépik át a legnehezebben a magyar oktatási rendszerben szocializálódott (áldozatok) nyelvtanulók.

2023.07.21 08:05 FullVinceMode Derek Cheng: Why the gunman was given home detention, and how that’s meant to reduce reoffending - but does it?

There has been some interest around this topic, and this article is behind a paywall, so I thought I would make it accessible for those interested. What follows is not my work at all, but a straight copy-paste of the article in the title, sans pictures.

"ANALYSIS
The use of home detention as a sentence is one of the key issues following yesterday’s tragic shootout in downtown Auckland. Corrections statistics show those on home detention are two and a half times less likely to be reconvicted within 12 months than those serving a prison term of one to two years.
But as National lobs the first shots at Labour over the Auckland shootout, research shows a negligible difference in recidivism rates between those on home detention and those serving short prison terms - controlling for other factors.
Matu Tangi Matu Reid was serving a five-month home detention sentence - and wearing an electronic bracelet - when he took a pump-action shotgun to a construction site and opened fire. Two construction workers are now dead, as is Reid.
There are several investigations underway including by police into how Reid, who had no firearms licence, procured the shotgun, and by Corrections into the management of his home detention.
Prime Minister Chris Hipkins also signaled the possibility of a wider system review, which could cover whether Reid should have been given a home detention sentence in the first place.
He was sentenced in March for domestic violence offences in September 2021. He’d been drinking when he attacked his partner - who has automatic name suppression - punching and kicking her, throwing an object at her face, and holding her by the throat for 10 seconds with enough force to fracture her neck.
“That is not a short period of time when someone is being strangled, Mr Reid… it would have been a terrifying event for her,” Judge Steve Bonnar said in his sentencing notes.
Reid had previously been convicted of assault and was still subject to a sentence of supervision at the time. He faced a sentence of up to seven years’ jail, the maximum sentence for his most serious offence: strangulation.
Judge Bonnar, agreeing with the Crown, said the level of offending was “low to moderate” and the starting point for a sentence was two years and three months’ jail. He then noted the aggravating factors that pushed the sentence to three years: the harm he caused (the partner was hospitalised), the “fairly significant level of violence involved” in the strangulation, the fact Reid was still on supervision, the “moderate” vulnerability of his partner, and the fact that the offending occurred in her safe place, her home.

The mitigating factors included Reid’s guilty plea (a nine-month discount, agreed to by the Crown), and his youth, remorse, and background factors that “have some connection to your offending” (a seven-month discount).
Those factors were detailed in a cultural background report that said Reid ran away from home at a young age, was exposed to gang culture while young, and suffered from “systemic depravation, a disconnect with your culture, [and] a history of family instability and hardship, including being exposed to domestic violence and physical abuse as a young person”.
His sentence - reduced from 36 to 20 months’ jail - made him eligible for home detention, which Judge Bonnar deemed appropriate because sending him to prison would more likely “set you down the wrong path”.
Offenders serving sentences between one and two years are automatically released - with conditions - after half their sentence, so Reid’s home detention sentence was 10 months. It was then cut to five months, given he had already spent five months in custody awaiting sentencing.
His conditions included not having any alcohol or drugs, attending an appropriate non-violence programme and alcohol and drug programme to be determined by a probation officer, and not contacting his partner without approval.
Police Commissioner Andrew Coster has said that, so far, there is no indication that Reid had breached the conditions of his home detention.

Home detention - stable accommodation and social support

Home detention is one of 10 community-based sentences and was introduced in 1999. Since 2007, it has been up to the courts to impose home detention rather than the parole board.
Then-Justice Minister Mark Burton, at the third reading of the bill that enacted these changes, said “home detention is a proven, successful measure for selected offenders ... Home detention has low reconviction and low reimprisonment rates when compared with prison sentences.”
The contentious issue that was debated in the House at the time was whether it was an appropriate alternative to a short prison sentence for violent offenders.
It is available to offenders who are sentenced to up to two years in prison, and is considered a curfew at an agreed address, to be monitored electronically. Its advantages include allowing offenders to have a paid job, stable accommodation and social relationships - all potential contributors to breaking the re-offending cycle.
Its use has been stable in the last five years, though according to answers to parliamentary written questions, 2254 people have had at least two home detention sentences between 2015 and 2022.

And it is far less costly than jail; the 2021/22 annual report from Corrections says the average daily cost of monitoring home detention is $109, almost a fifth of the equivalent cost of a person in prison ($531). In that year, 1482 offenders served home detention sentences with an average sentence length of 210 days.
Slightly fewer than one in six offenders on home detention were convicted of a new crime within 12 months of starting their sentence, while one in 14 were imprisoned. The 12-month reconviction rate (38.8 per cent) was two and half times higher for those released after serving a one- to two-year jail sentence, while the re-imprisonment rate (22.4 per cent) was almost three times higher.
Within two years, 31.6 per cent of those starting a home detention sentence had been convicted again, while 11 per cent were imprisoned. The reconviction and re-imprisonment rates for those released after a one- to two-year prison sentence were again much higher: more than twice as high for reconviction (64.4 per cent) and nearly four times higher for re-imprisonment (40.7 per cent).

Not much recidivism difference, controlling for other factors

A 2019 paper by Corrections analyst Dr Wayne Goodall noted the similarly stark differences in the reconviction and re-imprisonment rates in the 2018 data, but said “simple comparisons of this nature can be misleading”.
Accounting for other factors, he found little difference in re-offending rates for those on home detention and those serving short prison sentences.
He drew from two unpublished studies - one looking at 2008 and 2009 data, the other looking at 2008 to 2013 - that sought to control for the “differences arising from characteristics of the offenders or their offending”.
The former study, by S Dixon and M Morris, found prisoners were 4 and 5 percentage points more likely to be reconvicted after one and two years respectively than those on home detention. The latter study, by BERL, found prisoners were 3.4 percentage points more likely to be reconvicted within one year, but after two years the rates were almost identical.
Goodall noted the 3.4 percentage point difference in the BERL study as the only “statistically significant” one in the likelihood of being convicted; it’s unclear why the Dixon and Morris findings were considered insignificant.
Accounting for the “strong positive difference in favour of home detention” due to the stable accommodation and “prosocial” support, he concluded: “There is no difference in real reconviction rates between home detainees and those released from a short term of imprisonment.”
Corrections and Goodall have been contacted to clarify why factors that contribute to the likelihood of reoffending should be discounted.
“The belief that home detention necessarily results in lower rates of reconviction is not supported,” wrote Goodall, adding that this is consistent with external research cited in the unpublished studies.
“The raw or unadjusted rates differ due to differences in characteristics of the offenders serving the two types of sentence not the structure of the sentence types. However, what is apparent from these studies is that home detention sentences, which essentially allow offenders who would otherwise be imprisoned to remain in the community, certainly do not increase the likelihood of offending.”

The unpublished studies also found that those who were in prison were more likely to be on welfare than those on home detention, who were “modestly” more likely to be employed a year after their sentences.
Given how much cheaper it is compared to keeping an offender behind bars, Goodall said home detention was arguably a “safe and cost-effective sanction”, and the use of it whenever practicable is “sound”.
“In those instances where home detention is feasible (there is a residence available) and there are no clear reasons for preferring imprisonment, home detention should be recommended.”
Goodall’s paper is cited in a Ministry of Justice paper - Long-Term Insights on Imprisonment, 1960 to 2050 - which says: “Once differences in risk are controlled for, people on home detention sentences (which avoid people encountering criminal peers in prison settings) reoffend at a similar rate to people sent to prison on short sentences.”
A meta-analysis of international studies showed imprisonment increased the likelihood of reoffending “but only very slightly”, the paper said, adding that no equivalent research in New Zealand exists.
The paper adds: “Administrative data from 1990 to 2018 consistently shows that around 60 per cent of people who go to prison for the first time do not return to prison within the first five years after release. This suggests that to the extent it occurs, the criminogenic impact of prison is not immediate and/or does not lead to reoffending serious enough to result in reimprisonment.”

The gap between the public and the judiciary

Yesterday politicians refrained from trying to score any political points over the tragic events in Auckland, but today National attacked Labour for not restricting judges’ ability to reduce sentences, and demanding its target to reduce the prison population by 30 per cent be axed.
“Downgrading prison sentences to home detention poses clear threats to community safety which Labour continually refuses to acknowledge,” National’s justice spokesman Paul Goldsmith said in a statement.
“Home detention rarely means offenders are confined to their homes, with many attending workplaces and other public places. Home detention has its place, but ultimately, an ankle bracelet only tells authorities where someone is. It cannot stop them from harming innocent New Zealanders.”
He didn’t say so specifically, but the overlying tone is that Reid should not have been given home detention in the first place. But it’s up to a judge to determine whether home detention is more appropriate than a custodial sentence.
It’s unclear whether National’s wish for a 40 per cent limit on how much a judge can discount a sentence would have made a difference.
Such a discount on Reid’s initial 36-month sentence (accounting for aggravating factors) would have still left the sentence at less than two years, and therefore eligible for home detention. Assuming a 40 per cent limit, however, a judge might have decided not to apply all of it, leaving it at longer than 24 months.
It is equally speculative to wonder whether, having served a short prison term, something similar to the events of yesterday morning might still have transpired at some point after he was released.
Here in a nutshell is the political divide: one side says if they’re sent to prison, they can’t harm the public; the other side says they might end up being a greater danger to the public once they’re eventually released, so it’s better to exhaust all rehabilitative efforts.
[Monthly costs of cultural reports approved by legal aid, the public defence service, and total (bold). Source: WPQ]
National also wants to cut taxpayer funding for cultural background reports which can - and in Reid’s case, did - contribute to a discounted sentence. Their monthly cost has skyrocketed from a few thousand dollars in 2017 to well over half a million dollars.
Act wants to get rid of them completely. Leader David Seymour has called them a “cottage industry” that’s being used to reduce sentences for “hardened criminals”, while failing to properly acknowledge the victim.
The underlying theme - which Seymour alluded to when asked recently about the Three Strikes regime - is that there is a gulf between what the judiciary and the public consider to be appropriate punishment.
Give the people what they (or a majority of them) want, or leave it with those who supposedly know better?
Labour and the Greens support judicial discretion and independence, an acknowledgment of the separation of powers. It’s also based on trust in the judiciary to make decisions with all the relevant factors in mind - including the cultural background of the accused.
Judges have to keep public safety front of mind, and have expert knowledge of details - including legal precedent and the nature and history of New Zealand law - that the public do not.
But it is inevitable, given the inherent uncertainties in the factors that are considered, that mistakes will be made. Judicial decisions are not infallible - regardless of whichever politicians are in power.
