2024.04.28 00:49 Horvabarna My Phone 2 experiences after 5 months

My Phone 2 experiences after 5 months
CONTEXT
I've only been a smartphone user since 2015 (I am terminally gen Z), and have had mostly android phones these past 10 years. I used to be a huge Motorola simp back in the Moto G3 days, but after the disappointment that was the Z2 play I decided to give an iPhone a chance. I got an iPhone XR in late 2018 and happily used it for about 5 years (far longer than any of my android phones). After it too started developing major slowdown and bugs in iOS 17 I thought it time to jump ship and give android another chance. I chose the Phone (2) because it seemed the best option. A fresh company with a proven founder, based on ideals I could support, designing a fresh looking phone with unique features (something I've been missing ever since the modular phone craze died). Reviewers raved about it, and a few friends owned Phone (1)s and had ok to great experiences, so I dove in.
(I was also confident in it's longevity, as that had become somewhat of on important factor to me after 5 years of using the same phone)
FIRST IMPRESSIONS (AND HONEYMOON PHASE)
My first impressions were extremely positive. The phone booting in under 10s (something I hadn't known before) was a delightful surprise, and the general responsiveness was great. I really loved the minimalist UI, and the fact that there was absolutely no bloat whatsoever. The fingerprint reader was better than I expected, and in general, I liked how it felt in the hand and looked. The cameras seemed ok, though even my test pictures had some telltale signs of future disappointment that I wouldn't yet acknowledge.
DISPLAY
In isolation the display seemed great. I once again had an OLED panel, and one capable of LTPO and 120Hz at that. The smoothness was intoxicating, but the colours were not. When compared side by side to my iPhone XR, the colours always seemed more muted, or even skewed. While the blacks were deeper, and the display was brighter, it wasn't a euphoric upgrade in day to day use. Outside in bright sun it did prove better for readability, but the high brightness proved a downside late at night. Watching youtube in bed is far more uncomfortable on the Phone (2) at minimum brightness than the XR. Even with "Extra Dim" enabled it's minimum brightness is closer to maybe the 15 or 20% setting on the XR. And as a slight tangent, it really should be called "A Little Bit Dimmer", because that's all it is, about 3% dimmer. 3% which works on any brightness setting, so you can just throw off the accuracy of the brightness slider if you so wish.
This high base brightness was also of great concern to me as an analog photographer, as I often use my phones in the darkroom as timers or ways to reference process books and documents. The Phone (2)s higher minimum brightness and under screen fingerprint reader meant that it was a significantly more risky phone to keep around and unlock when I needed it.
BATTERY
The battery remains my favourite thing about this phone. I used to carry 2 battery banks everywhere and would rarely let them drop below 50% charge. The Phone (2) killed this habit in just a week. I could finally last all day on a single charge (even on my Netflix binge days, I at most needed a little top-up towards the end of the day). I would comfortably start Waze, and play lossless audio in the car even at 50% or lower state of charge, and not think of plugging in a charger because I knew the phone would last the trip, and still leave me with plenty of battery to use.
CHARGING
Another extremely positive experience. I've made a habit of charging my phones at 5w overnight, as this is the best compromise between convenience and keeping the battery healthy. For the first 3-4 months I used an IKEA 5w brick and cable, and the last 2 I mostly used an IKEA qi charger. The Phone (2) stayed cold to the touch on the cable, and only got mildly warm on the qi charger, so I was happy.
I also tried fast charging it on the few occasions I needed a top-up. 20w PD or QC still leaves the phone cold to the touch, while giving a pretty good boost in a short time. 45w PD noticeably and significantly warms up the phone, but is lightning fast. I would still advise against using the 45w capability often, as it's surely a way to get a degraded battery quickly.
SPEAKERS AND AUDIO
The speakers I would describe as alright. They are not particularly thin, or particularly bassy. They're a league below current flagships, but are clear enough for podcasts and phone calls, and will do in a pinch for music. I did notice that my speakers developed distortion after a few months of use, but this is only apparent at max volume. Headphone out was a bigger disappointment. All output devices are subject to the various bass boosting (and I suspect other) tuning that are applied on the OS level to make the speakers sound decent, however, this makes most good audio devices sound like ass. I suggest turning the bass tuning off in the settings, and living with the slightly worse speaker audio. Volume is plenty loud at it's highest setting, but feels a little too loud at the lowest end sometimes. Beyond this the built in DAC is not the best. With a cheap passive adapter the noise floor is fairly high, there is an audible hiss present even in not particularly detailed IEMs and headphones. Using an active adapter can improve this, but I have only been able to test the apple USB-C to 3.5mm one, which is known to have driver issues on Android. This resulted in bugged in-line remote behaviour, low volume, and long connection times for me. Bluetooth audio is very hit and miss. While the Phone (2) does support HD codecs like aptX HD and LDAC, and will default to them whenever possible (Specifically aptX HD, LDAC needs to be enabled for each device in developer settings each time it is connected), the range with these codes, and even with more robust, lossy codecs like AAC is atrocious. I can barely walk a few paces (while maintaining line of sight with the speaker) without dropouts. 2.4GHz wifi also seems to have a severely detrimental effect on bluetooth range.
MICROPHONE
The microphone has been one of the biggest letdowns of the entire phone. Even with the supposedly noise cancelling multi mic array, phone calls get noisy and unclear for recipients. Speaker phone is almost totally useless, more than about 50cms of distance between the phone and my head and the audio starts to fall apart, and I need to almost shout to be heard. During videos or audio recordings it's similarly bad. Even with the built in recorder app set to "voice centric" mode, the Phone (2) failed to clearly record a lecture with me sitting about a meter from the lecturer. The most prominent thing on the recording was the projector fan, about 2 meters overhead. For videos the bad mic tuning mostly manifests in hard to hear voices from behind the camera, the array doesn't tend to adjust well to changing auditory conditions.
GLYPHS
While a big reason for buying the Phone (2), after a few months I found myself using them less and less. I still found them useful for seeing if something was happening out of my peripheral vision, but with flip-to-glyph being un-ideal for my lifestyle, they lost a lot of their purpose.
PERFORMANCE
I can comfortably say that this has been my most consistently snappy android phone to date. Maybe that is due to the flagship chipset or Nothing's optimisation of Android (probably both), but at the end of the day the Phone (2) remained fast and responsive for the time I used it. Most tasks leave it not hitting the CPU too hard, as is evident by the phone staying totally cool. Only Netflix posed a more serious CPU load for me, but it too only made the phone mildly warm.
MODEM
To put it simply, the modem in the Phone (2) is unacceptable. WiFi and Bluetooth range is frankly mediocre at best, speeds over WiFi are bested by older budget iPhones, and the reliability of the connection leaves a lot to be desired. The cell modem makes things even worse. I get random connection drops all over Budapest, and well populated areas of more rural Hungary. Often, these drops will last for minutes, while I am totally unable to access the internet, or sometimes even make phone calls. The various 4G+ and 5G bands are teh most unreliable, I regularly see the little indicator flash on and off repeatedly as the phone fails to maintain a high-speed connection. The modems also require fairly frequent resets, as about 2-3 times a week they'll reach a state where data throughput pretty much completely halts, and all internet based apps slow to a crawl or fail to resolve an endpoint all together.
SENSORS (PROXIMITY, IMU AND GPS)
The proximity sensor has been a fairly major grievance since I got the Phone (2). It had a habit of activating "mistouch prevention" in situations it was totally unwarranted (and ironically letting mistouches happen in others). It also made the AOD, and raise to wake features undependable. Various apps and features that rely on the sensors output to blank the screen often bugged out too.
Mistouch prevention triggering with the phone propped up
While this phone does have a genuine, and proper accelerometer and gyroscope, the quality and tuning leave a lot to be desired. The spirit level in the camera is borderline useless, as holding the phone level, with a human level of hand shake will cause the vibration confirmation to be triggered repeatedly, as one's hand drifts in and out of level by even the slightest amount. The drift is also apparent when using the Phone (2) as a tracker with OWOtrack.
GPS, while not requiring constant re-calibration like on cheaper, and older phones, regularly fails to determine the phones facing correctly. This is especially prominent with the phone placed in landscape mode. Usually the tracking picks up after a few dozen meters, but even after that the accuracy remains mediocre. Navigation apps often need a number of seconds and a few dozen meters to determine that you have taken an interchange for example.
TOUCH
Touch initially feels fine, but the experience deteriorates quickly. The "home" gesture for example. While it works okay in portrait mode with a thumb, when using any other finger the success rate drops to below 10%. The figures are even worse in landscape. I have had no luck getting back to the homescreen from landscape mode with any other finger than my thumb, the phone will simply think I am attempting to slide something in whatever app I am in (which has caused a few catastrophes with 3D prints for example). The gestures also have a habit of bugging out mid-actuation, I've recently had a few instances of being able to swipe in an app, after having pulled it up into the app switcher. The most annoying instance of this was while in a car, I had to open the app switcher after the phone app forced itself fullscreen and into portrait mode (something it always does, whenever a call is started), in the process of trying to navigate back to Waze I managed to mute the phone call while I was swiping the app up into the app switcher.
The back gesture is similarly annoying, many apps that require swiping as part of their interface are made hard to use by accidental triggers of the back gesture. This can be mitigated by turning it's sensitivity down in the settings, but even so, mistriggers are unavoidable.
ANDROID
This section is more about my personal observations about Android, as someone who jumped ship around the time of oreo and pie. I had some fundamental issues with Android even then, but have also developed a dependence on features that have simply not materialized, or were not implemented as well as on iOS.
The notification and control center was the first letdown. Notifications were messy and hard to sort and read through, with apps often hiding any text beyond the first few messages, making me open them to be able to skim the conversation. WiFi settings especially were much slower to access, and more annoying to get to, with them being combined with the cell modem controls.
Beyond the Notification center, the various ringing and DND modes also proved to be unideal for me. I have a few contacts that I want to always ring through, and as far as I could tell there was no easy way to achieve this. Even as starred contacts the best they get is a small popup at the top of the screen to notify me about their call, while everyone else only gets a tiny notification bar icon (I have missed many phone calls due to this). I also really liked when Nothing's own version of Messenger chatheads randomly activated itself, despite me never once acknowledging even it's mere existence. /S
Google pay has also been a bane on my existence ever since I got the Phone (2). With handshake times that are far longer than those of Apple Pay and the Phone (2)s sub-par NFC, I had to attempt most transactions for a dozen seconds, and some of them I had to relaunch the interface and attempt payment 2 or 3 times. The fact that various loyalty cards are also not accessible without fully unlocking the phone, and opening the wallet app is also very annoying.
Another grievance and letdown were the Photos and Files app. After years of users boycotting Apple, and them finally adding a Files app, I thought that the Android version must be on a similar level (which is not a high bar, as even as late as early builds of iOS 17 the Files app was unstable af). I had grown to be a regular user of SMB shares through the Files app on iOS to dump my photos and videos off, as this proved to be much faster and more reliable than MTP, or using any kind of cloud service (not to mention free). I was surprised to see that the Android Files app did not in fact offer any kind of networking capability. I did try Total Commander again, but gave up quickly after it proved much more difficult to use than simply uploading the files to telegram, or waiting for MTP.
Apps in general were of poorer quality and design than their iOS variants. I experienced far more bugs, and had to deal with many more nonsensical UI choices than on even independently developed iOS apps. Some apps like Telegram are straight up missing features like chat preview, while doing basic things such as image compression worse. Some apps like FB Messenger bug out, and need to be reopened constantly.
The last major letdown was compatibility. The aforementioned driver issues with Apple 3.5mm adapter were annoying, but having to download VLC just to play an AVI file kind of broke me.
There was also at least one major, possibly silent update induced bug I experienced, during which the phone got uncomfortably hot by the morning despite being on a 5w charger. It then proceeded to drain extremely quickly, getting down to 40% after just a few hours of screentime (less than half of what I was used to) while being uncomfortably warm. I was scared the battery may have had a sudden failure, but after a restart, all was back to normal.
CAMERAS
As a photographer, while I have high expectations of cameras, I also place far less of an expectation on phone cameras than most reviewers. They are merely tools of convenience and memory for me, meant to take pictures of parking locations, router passwords, and the occasional silly moment with friends and family. The Phone (2) manages to fail even this low bar. I will split this into sections for clarity, starting with the main shooter.
MAIN SHOOTER - STILLS
Initial impressions were good. In bright, mid-day conditions the Phone (2) delivers clear, sharp, and detailed results, with not horrible colour. Especially when shooting in the 50 megapixel mode, the Phone (2)s pictures blow my old 12 megapixel XR out of the water. However, once the lighting changes, the Phone (2) begins to struggle. Indoor spaces vary wildly depending on the temperature of the lighting, 4-5000K is about it's sweetspot, here at most you'll notice any CRI anomalies from bad quality lighting, but venturing into 2200-3000K territory, and the Phone (2s) images turn almost sepiatone.
Photo with a single 2700k desklamp as a lightsource, white paper on a purple blanket
A further issue with artificial lighting (especially LEDs and fluorescents) is the absolutely atrocious line frequency filtering. Distinct bands can be seen even on stills sometimes, caused by LED lighting. Add in the inconsistent autofocus, and drunk HDR and denoise, and you're in for a frustrating time.
An example of over-zealous HDR, trying to create highlights in an otherwise low-lit scene
Crop to show the messy denoise
Another HDR and auto exposure moment
Same scene shot as a RAW in manual mode
All of these issues can be made worse by the sub-par optics. Any photographer knows, that point light sources shining into a camera can create flare and cause a loss of contrast. This is usually compensated for by complex lens designs, lens coatings, and in the case of smartphones, computational photography. The Phone (2) fails at most of these pretty spectacularly. When light sources shine into the lens, the contrast takes a nosedive, the exposure and HDR go on vacation, and it's a free-for-all for flares.
An example of the flares and contrast loss due to point light sources, along with the malfunctioning HDR, that let the face and hands burn out
Another example of flare (as well as bad color, and over sharpening)
Bokeh is present when shooting close subjects, but it's messy and unappealing. Most of the time it looks too busy, and the processing on the images tends to accentuate it's bad qualities.
Example of messy bokeh
MAIN SHOOTER - RAW
RAW files feel like a spec sheet feature, but I didn't expect much more. As expected from such a small sensor, the Dynamic range is low, and noise is high. The biggest flaw with RAWs is the fact that vignette compensation is still done to them, BAD vignette compensation at that. This "solution" to bad optics also sometimes shows up on darker scenes shot with the standard camera, usually as red or green tinted glowing corners, but it is especially prominent on the RAWs. The saving grace of the manual and RAW option, is the fact that it can sometimes be the only way to get acceptable images without HDR issues (as shown in the fire example above).

Example of the built in vignetting compensation, notice how the noise level is much lower in the center of the image
MAIN SHOOTER - VIDEO
Video initially gives good impressions, just like the stills mode. It is generally sharp and detailed, with low noise, however the inconsistent HDR rears it's ugly head especially hard here, aided by the sub-par auto exposure. Besides this it suffers from general stutteryness that's present on most android phones. OIS, while present, doesn't do much other than make the video almost annoyingly floaty, often small hand vibrations or even footsteps cause the image to vibrate. Often the stabilization has a noticeable distorting effect on the video as well.
Jarring HDR and exposure change, along with lensflares
HDR overcompensating and creating colour shifts, and losing detail
Example of bad line filtering, with highly visible pulsing present on all fluorescent lightsources, also includes a good example of stutter, the jarring way in which cameras switch mid video, and some hand vibrations which completely stump the OIS
WIDE ANGLE - STILLS
The lower quality sensor is felt here, yet despite that I found myself using this camera more than the main 50 megapixel shooter. Often it's HDR and auto exposure actually produces better results than the main camera. This is also partly due to the optics, which flare considerably less than the main camera's, and maintain contrast better across a range of situations.
Same studio scene from earlier, notice the higher contrast and lack of flares
Another direct example of main VS wide shooter
Kitchen shot with the main camera
Kitchen shot with the wide angle camera
WIDE ANGLE - VIDEO
The same issues present on the main shooter are present here, but overall this camera is almost useless for video. While it's better optics, and resistance to flares help the picture quality, the lack of OIS makes any video not shot on a 10lbs tripod shaky and borderline unwatchable. The slightest hand movements will shake the image beyond recognition, while digital IS makes the framing float around. Even using an external stabilizer like a DJI osmo doesn't help enough. The lack of sensitivity in the Samsung sensor also becomes obvious as the cameras switch, and the image suddenly becomes 1/2 to 1 stop darker or brighter.
Example of shake while using an osmo
Example of a night time video with camera shake and jarring camera switches
CAMERA - USER INTERFACE
Generally speaking it's good. Copying Apple's design choices worked wonders, however the switch to and from 50 megapixel mode could have been an easier to reach toggle. I all too often found myself shooting in 50 megapixel mode for the most inconsequential shots, taking up storage for no reason (and also often creating a worse looking image after secondary compression through messaging apps, as Telegram for example does a really ugly job of scaling down the image with no antialiasing). I also don't really like how hard the manual mode is to access, as often as it would be useful when HDR and AWB are inconsistent, I find myself only using in the most crucial situations where I need a particular shot. The RAW option is also bugged, sometimes not saving a RAW or JPEG version of some images at random. The lack of working AF, and the nonsensical manual focus in this mode is also a major turn off.
THE PEBBLE SAGA
Being a nerd, I had bought myself a Pebble Steel back in December to use. After a few months of executive dysfunction and waiting for parts, I finally had a working one, and began to set it up as per the instructions on rebble.io. After setting up the APK, and supposedly allowing everything on the first startup, I still had to manually go through permissions in order to get it to even find my Pebble. This took about 10-15 minutes, as I had to go through each category of permission and see if the app was in there and allowed. I also had to check in a few hidden menus, to allow hidden permissions. The most important one of these was the "app and notification settings", which was greyed out and could not be changed due to "security".
The restricted setting error in question
Not to worry, the guide included a solution for how to bypass this lockout, all I needed to do was go into the apps about page.
The rebble.io guide
Said about page, completely missing the little 3-dot option menu, effectively denying me the chance to properly run this app
At this point I was pissed. Months of small inconveniences and bugs had piled up, and I was at my limit. I ended up taking the SIM card back out, and switching back to my old iPhone XR for the time being.
THE BACKUP
After a few days of deliberating, I decided on selling my Phone (2), and for that I would need to back up all of my images. I once again downloaded Total Commander and it's networking plugin, and began dumping the contents of the internal storage. After a few minutes I was suspicious that I hadn't gained any percentage towards the total copy and checked on the speed, which was going at an absolute crawl despite sitting next to my wireless router on 5GHz.
I decided to do a test (transferring a single 2GB HEVC video) against my XR and the results were a bloodbath.
The Phone 2 averaged 57 Mbps with a total transfer time of 4 minutes and 36 seconds.
The iPhone XR averaged 60 Mbps copying from the photos app, completing the transfer in just 4 minutes and 24 seconds. Saving the file to the Files app before copying however yielded an average of almost 300 Mbps, and a transfer time of just 54 seconds.
In the end, after subsequent attempts to transfer over SMB yielded even lower speeds, I decided to give MTP one last chance. After it crashed the Windows Explorer multiple times, I decided to try it on a Mac. This is how I finally ended up being able to dump everything, and even so it needed to be done in small batches, as anything more than a few gigabytes would crash the connection to the Mac OS Lion era app that is needed to get MTP working on Mac.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
I don't wanna detract too badly from the Phone (2)s accomplishments. It's still the best Android phone I have used to date, and I would recommend it in a heartbeat to any Android diehards out there. But I wish to dispel the myth that this is a "flagship killer", and especially an "iPhone killer". It simply is not. It lacks the refinement and consistency for which people buy iPhones, or even some flagship Android devices. For the price, the Phone (2) is a very complete package, and will undoubtedly be more cared for by Nothing's support than any cheap Xiaomi or Samsung will be.
Yet it also speaks volumes that the 2 people that helped convince me to buy a Phone (2) have also switched to an iPhone 15 pro, and 2022 SE respectively.
In short, if you're considering a Phone (2), and are willing to live with all I have outlined; If you've been an Android user all your life; if you're physically ill from holding an iPhone; if the above describes you, the Phone (2) is for you. If, however, you're thinking of believing the journalists telling you how iPhone users in their droves are leaving Apple for Nothing and jumping ship yourself, I'd advise staying to avoid disappointment.

🔗Fujifilm QuickSnap 35mm Bullseye Target Camera Value Pack - 2 Cameras

https://preview.redd.it/gv0mj93yassc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=113f5dfb63fa556734ae71e325e26fb333b032f6
As a lover of vintage photography, I was drawn to the Fujifilm QuickSnap 35mm disposable cameras. I received one as a gift, and it instantly took me back to my childhood days when we had disposable cameras. When I first opened the camera, I was delighted to find the film inside. It wasn't a Fuji film, but I thought, "It's still a film camera, so it'll do the job! "
Using the camera was a blast. The built-in flash was handy, and I appreciated the manual on/off switch. The slide-flash switch was a fun touch, and I loved that the flash-ready indicator popped up when the flash needed to be activated. The camera was easy to use, and the results were surprisingly good. I developed the film, and most of the pictures turned out great.
However, there were a few drawbacks to using this disposable camera. Firstly, the film was only good for 27 exposures, and once that was up, there was no way to refill the camera. Secondly, the flash range was only 10 feet, which may have been limiting in certain lighting scenarios.
Despite these cons, I enjoyed using the Fujifilm QuickSnap 35mm disposable camera and appreciated the nostalgic experience it provided. If you're looking for a fun, retro way to capture some memories, this camera could be a perfect fit for you.

🔗AR500 Steel Bullseye Gong for Shooting Range

https://preview.redd.it/fc5p0ugyassc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4f63559e27ee0641c946ca44e2f169ac5063469
As a seasoned shooter, I recently tried the AR500 Steel Bullseye Gong from Shooting Targets 7. This gong measures 10 inches and is designed to provide a reactive target for shooting enthusiasts. What stood out to me most was its center target; a 4-inch circle hanging off the back of the main gong. When you hit this center target, you experience a different sound ring, making your shooting experience even more enjoyable.
Setting up the gong was a breeze. The included hardware made it easy to hang it on a tree or any other sturdy structure. Plus, the steel construction made it feel durable and long-lasting. I also appreciated the angled design of the gong, which helped reduce the risk of stray bullets bouncing back.
However, the gong did require some maintenance after a few rounds. A bit of paint here and there helped it maintain its eye-catching appearance and enhanced the target's visibility when it was hit. While this added an extra touch to the user experience, it wasn't a deal-breaker.
Overall, the AR500 Steel Bullseye Gong from Shooting Targets 7 was a fun and rewarding addition to my shooting targets collection. Its sturdy construction, reactive center target, and user-friendly setup made it stand out among other targets I've tried.

I recently tried the 1/4 inch AR500 Bullseye Shooting Target. The golden yellow, zinc-plated finish looked great and was a nice touch. The center of the target was definitely the star of the show, creating a unique sound and a thrilling challenge for the shooter.
Setting it up was a breeze - it arrived ready for paint and all I had to do was add a bit of paint to the T-posts and it was good to go. I've shot a few rounds on the target and it held up fantastically, needing only a couple of spray paint touches to look brand new again.
The only thing that could have been better is if the box it came in was more resilient - it was a bit dented, but this is a really minor issue considering the quality of the rest of the product. All in all, this ShootingTargets7 Bullseye Shooting Target has really become a favorite for us. Its unique design and great durability make every shot a thrilling experience!

🔗Decoy Security Bullet Camera with Realistic Red Light

https://preview.redd.it/z4cwo2azassc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b37564d96b903d5fd06dae09e7b0daf853bb654a
It's not every day that a decoy can up your safety game, but the GE Decoy Security Bullet Camera is doing just that. I've been using it in my daily life, and let me tell you, it's got quite the story to tell.
This faux camera is as realistic as they come, complete with a rotatable head that provides the illusion of security wherever you need it. The red indicator LED replicates a recording light, making it seem as though the camera is actively surveilling the area. It's so convincing, it's almost hard to believe it's not the real deal.
But let's talk durability. With an outdoor rating, this little fella can withstand any weather condition without batting an eye. And the best part? No wiring needed! The battery-operated device makes installation a breeze, saving you time and effort.
Of course, no product is perfect, and this one has its share of cons too. The absence of 2 AA batteries in the package might be a minor inconvenience for some, and the occasional need to replace them can be a bit of a pain. Additionally, some might find the design a tad bulkier than they'd prefer.
In conclusion, the GE Decoy Security Bullet Camera is a fantastic addition to any safety setup, providing a reassuring sense of security without the hefty price tag of a real camera. Just remember to keep those batteries fresh!

I've been using the Ring Stick Up Cam Plug-In for a few weeks now, and I must say, it's been a game-changer for my home security. The camera's quality is top-notch, with clear visuals even in low light conditions, thanks to its reliable night vision capabilities. I was particularly impressed by the responsive motion detection feature, which ensures I'm not constantly bombarded with notifications for every small movement.
One thing I appreciated was the ease of setting up the camera. It took just minutes to have it up and running, and the user-friendly app made it a breeze to monitor my home from anywhere. The added convenience of being able to connect multiple cameras to the Ring app is another great feature that makes keeping tabs on my property a stress-free task.
However, there were a couple of downsides to my experience. Firstly, I found the cable length a bit short, which made finding a suitable hiding place for the power cord a bit of a hassle. Secondly, while the Ring app is generally intuitive, I discovered that some settings could be a bit tricky to find initially.
Overall, the Ring Stick Up Cam Plug-In has made a significant difference in my home security, and its easy setup, quality video, and reliable performance make it a valuable addition to any home.

🔗Kasa Smart Kasa Cam Outdoor: Weatherproof, 24/7 Recording Outdoor Security Camera

I recently had the chance to try out the TP-Link KC420WS Kasa Camera Outdoor, and I have to say, I was quite impressed with its capabilities. This little powerhouse can capture crisp, clear footage even in complete darkness, thanks to its brilliant Starlight Night Vision and Full Color Night Vision features. The integration of these two functionalities ensures that the footage you record is of high quality, even during low-light conditions.
The camera's build quality is robust; it sports an IP65 weatherproof rating, meaning it can withstand a splash of water, humidity, and other outdoor elements without any hassle. And, when it comes to installation, it couldn't be easier - simply use the provided mounting hardware and template. Plus, the compatibility with virtual assistants like Kasa Smart Alexa and Google Assistant adds a layer of convenience to the user experience.
However, there is always room for improvement. While the camera's motion detection feature alerts you promptly about any activity, it could be tweaked to minimize false alarms. Nonetheless, the easy setup and user-friendly controls make the KC420WS Kasa Camera Outdoor a reliable and practical solution for securing your outdoor space. Overall, I'd highly recommend this camera for its impressive performance and seamless integration with smart home devices.

🔗Explore the World with Precision: Flir One Gen 3 Thermal Camera for Smartphones

The FLIR One Gen 3 has a sleek design and feels great to hold, attaching easily to my iPhone for a unique, one-of-a-kind thermal vision experience. Its intuitive app interface made it a breeze to navigate, enabling me to easily toggle between thermal and visual modes for an enlightening perspective on the world around me.
One major highlight of the FLIR One Gen 3 is the MSX technology that merges the thermal and visual imagery, resulting in crisp and detailed images that allowed me to make accurate and informed decisions. Additionally, the non-contact temperature measurement feature ensured that I could take precise, reliable readings without having to touch the object I was observing.
However, I did encounter a couple of limitations. One was the limited FOV in thermal mode, which made it difficult to capture larger expanses of my environment. Furthermore, while the app functionality was primarily user-friendly, the requirement of creating an account and sharing a folder with the app seemed to be an excessive overhead for such a simple task. Nonetheless, the FLIR One Gen 3 proved to be useful for identifying heat loss areas in my home and even allowed me to spot wildlife lurking in my garden when using the visual mode.
Overall, the FLIR One Gen 3 offered a unique and enjoyable experience enhanced by the combination of thermal and visual imagery. While there were a few minor hiccups to navigate, it provided me with plenty of useful features and insights that I would highly recommend for anyone looking to expand their understanding of their surroundings.

Recently, I had the opportunity to try out the Akaso EK7000 Pro action camera. As a first-time user of this type of camera, I was excited to see how it compared to the more expensive options on the market. From the moment I took it out of the box, I was impressed by its sleek design and small size. I found it incredibly easy to navigate through the touch screen interface to adjust settings and frame the perfect shot.
One of the most impressive features of the Akaso EK7000 Pro was its image stabilization. Whether I was capturing fast-paced action or steady shots of my surroundings, the resulting videos were always crisp and smooth. The underwater functionality also allowed me to dive into uncharted territory, capturing stunning footage of marine life and exploring hidden depths.
While the Akaso EK7000 Pro did an excellent job overall, there were a few areas where it could use some improvement. The battery life felt a bit short compared to some other action cameras I've tried, and I encountered some difficulty in using the camera as a dash cam due to the lack of a dedicated dash cam mode. However, these minor drawbacks were quickly overshadowed by the impressive videos and unique experiences I captured with this camera.
In conclusion, the Akaso EK7000 Pro action camera is a fantastic choice for those looking for a high-quality, budget-friendly option. With its fantastic image stabilization, underwater capabilities, and user-friendly touch screen interface, this camera stood out in my experience and left me with a lasting impression.

There's this moment, while you're out at the range, firing off your shots and eagerly anticipating your target hits, where it suddenly hits you - spotting those tiny impacts can be quite the challenge. That's when the Longshot Marksman Target Camera comes to the rescue.
This handy little device is a wireless, portable, battery-powered system, perfect for range enthusiasts, where it can be set up anywhere within a 10-15 feet range from your target. What makes it really shine is that it's positioned down near the target, meaning no more mirage hassles when it comes to spotting shots. And the best part? It doesn't require any cell service or Wi-Fi to view live HD video.
The Marksman can run for up to 12 hours continuously on a single charge and features a Blinker Shot Locator to make tracking your shot hits a cinch. Adding more cameras is a breeze, as each additional camera can be viewed through the company's TargetVision app. The app not only lets you track and number your shots but also saves photos, reviews sessions, and records videos and stills, making it a complete package for the shooting enthusiast.
However, one area where it could use a bit of improvement is its battery life, which might not be as long as advertised - 9 hours. Nonetheless, it's a device that's more than capable to enhance your range experience, making it a valuable addition to your range kit. And let's not forget the excellent customer service from Longshot, ensuring your satisfaction every step of the way.

🔗Geovision Target GV-EBD8711 8MP H.265 Network Camera: Durable, Waterproof IP67 Surveillance with Zoom and Low Lux Features

I've been using the Geovision Bullseye Target Camera for a few weeks now and it's quite impressive. The 8 megapixel network camera has a motorized lens that allows me to zoom and focus from the web interface, making it perfect for monitoring my property.
One of the features that really stands out is its automatic IR-cut filter and 2 built-in IR LEDs, which enable day and night surveillance. The waterproof rubber set also adds a layer of protection, making it suitable for use in all weather conditions.
The fact that it's waterproof and provides great image quality, even in low light situations, really makes it an excellent choice for outdoor security needs. I also love the fact that it's so easy to set up and adjust. Overall, a great addition to my home security setup.

🔗Long Range Target Camera System for Precision Shooting

https://preview.redd.it/93yeihq2bssc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a0204ce76003552b783de2a1c2c814267883060d
I've been using the Caldwell Ballistic Precision LR Target Camera System for a while now, and it's been quite a journey. The first thing that caught my attention was the live HD video streaming up to one mile away. I love that I can conveniently set up the camera and view it on my smartphone or tablet, all from the comfort of my shooting bench.
One feature that stood out for me was the compact storage case for easy transport. I've found it to be quite handy when I need to move the camera around or store it for long periods. The integrated rechargeable batteries also make it convenient to use, as I don't have to worry about constantly replacing batteries.
However, there have been a few downsides to using this system as well. For instance, I've had some connectivity issues with the transmitter and receiver. It seems like there might be some interference from the Wi-Fi networks in my home, which can sometimes make it difficult for the camera to connect.
Another problem I faced was with the 720p camera quality. While it's great for a general view, I found it to be quite grainy when trying to spot bullet holes on the color-changing targets. This made it quite difficult to see my target accurately, especially when shooting at close distances.
Furthermore, the camera clamp broke before it even had a chance to clamp on the tripod. I had to improvise a solution using some duck tape and hope for the best, but it wasn't an ideal situation. Another issue I had was with the sunshade - it didn't seem to work as effectively as I had hoped, especially on sunny days when the sun was directly behind the camera.
Despite these drawbacks, I must admit that the convenience of the live HD streaming and compact design make the Caldwell Ballistic Precision LR Target Camera System worth considering for anyone looking to improve their target shooting experience.

🔗Sony EyeToy Camera for PlayStation 2

https://preview.redd.it/i1fd19u5bssc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5af5af6fc4c8ed7f2ffa17f4c4734b2ba13c2bfb
Ever since I got my hands on the Sony Eye Toy Camera, my PlayStation 2 gaming sessions have been nothing short of thrilling. This device truly breathed new life into my gaming experience, making it feel like a personal escape from reality.
One of the standout features is the interactive, motion-tracking technology. This remarkable accessory allowed me to become the controller, making games even more immersive and interactive. It was a delight to see my digital avatar mimic my actions, creating a strong connection between the game and my body.
However, there were a few minor hiccups. The camera was quite sensitive, and I found myself having to adjust it occasionally to maintain a clear and stable image. While not a deal-breaker, it did distract me during my gaming sessions on occasion. Another thing to consider is the discontinued nature of the product, which could potentially limit its availability or result in compatibility issues with future consoles.
Overall, I'd highly recommend the Sony Eye Toy Camera for those looking to dive deeper into their PlayStation 2 gaming experience. Despite the minor drawbacks, the sense of immersion this device brings to the table is simply unparalleled.

🔗Affordable 4K outdoor security system with person detection and Alexa compatibility

I had the chance to use the Blink Outdoor 4 system recently, and I must say, it's a game-changer for my home security needs. The setup was incredibly easy; I downloaded the Blink app, plugged in the "Blink Module" to my WiFi, got my cameras connected, and was up and running in no time.
One of the things that stood out to me most was the long battery life. I didn't have to worry about constantly recharging or replacing batteries – a huge plus for a busy mom like me! The Blink Outdoor 4 runs off AA Lithium batteries, which can last up to two years with average use.
The cameras themselves are quite reliable and capture crisp, clear footage. I appreciate the wide field of view that the 4th generation provides, and the enhanced motion detection is spot-on. Notifications on my phone were timely, and the two-way audio feature is quite useful when I need to communicate with someone at my door.
However, there are a couple of drawbacks to consider. Firstly, the night vision quality could be better. The clips are quite grainy and not very clear in low light situations, which can make it difficult to identify intruders or pets after dark. Secondly, the Blink Subscription Plan is required for some advanced features, like person detection and extended cloud storage – this could add to the overall cost of the system.
Overall, the Blink Outdoor 4 system offers a simple, yet effective solution for those seeking smart home security at an affordable price. With its long battery life, reliable motion detection, and easy setup, it's a smart choice for protecting your home on a budget.

🔗Ultimate Precision: Long Range Target Camera with HD Imagery & Wireless Design

Imagine you're at the shooting range, aiming for the perfect shot but struggling to see if your target is hit or not. That's where the LONGSHOT LR-3 2-Mile Target Camera comes in, a game changer for extreme long-range shooters. The first time I set it up, I was blown away by how easy it was to use. Within minutes, I had the camera positioned near the target, ready to record every hit. The wireless, battery-powered system allowed me to view live HD video from anywhere, no cell service or Wi-Fi required.
The Blinker Shot Locator feature was a lifesaver, helping me spot new hits and make old shots stand out. The Longshot HD app made it even better, with the ability to zoom in and mark my shot groups with colored dots. Say goodbye to wasting time going back and forth to check your target - with this system, I could review my shots right from my phone.
The only downside was the occasional connection issue, but the company's outstanding customer service quickly had it resolved. Overall, the LONGSHOT LR-3 2-Mile Target Camera is a must-have for any serious shooter, offering unmatched precision and convenience in the field.

Hajike

In the world of Bo-bobo, Hajike is the art and philosophy of doing bizarre or unexpected things in order to confuse, fight, out-do others, or as a regular way of life. It is the main fighting style of several characters including Bo-Bobo, Don Patch, Tennosuke, and multiple Hair Hunters.

Ganeme

When Super Bo-Bobo is pushed to his limit against his brother Be-Bebe, he does the unthinkable; turns his sunglasses upside down and declares "Ganeme!" after shouting his name a bunch.

Landmine Dandy

When Bo-Bobo is killed by Bi-Bibi he is quickly revived by Torpedo Girl's father, Landmine Dandy, who becomes his Stand for the final battle with Bi-Bibi.

Genaha Break

After training for a year with Torpedo Girl, Bo-Bobo acquires a more serious fighting style, the Genaha Break. This form is powered by the Shintetsu Jacket, a jacket that increases his power times 3 and draws out the eight forces that hide within his body: Roppongi, Yukhoe, Oolong Tea, 300 Bikkuriman Stickers, Viagra, A Weather Forecaster, 2 glasses of Campari Orange, and a red DS Lite

2024.03.22 20:17 dreamsxyz T26L video review

GOOD: real Full HD 1920x1080, INSANELY CHEAP, 100w LED is decently bright, lasts long and heats "little". Sound is loud enough to mask the fan noise. Good image quality and colors.
BAD: simple lens set means no zoom adjustment (you get a fixed-size image which depends on the distance from the projection screen) and completely useless keystone trapezoid adjustment - you MUST install the projector on a high shelf, completely flat and pointing to the center of the projection screen (no ceiling mount or table mount), otherwise the image will be out of focus. The corners of the image are darker than the center.
Like many other LED products, the blue color is bright enough to activate UV reactive fluorescence. I noticed when the screen is blue, any fluorescent items nearby will light up with the mere reflection from the wall. You should probably avoid looking directly into the projection lenses, as with any projector. I don't believe the reflected light poses any harm to the eye, as any UV in it should be near-UV.
Projecting from approx. 3.7m away, I got a screen which has a diagonal of 125 inches (3,18m). Screen dimensions 1.56m x 2.77m. If you need to use keystone correction, buy the T26K because it has digital keystone (this is the only difference between the models). Overall it's a good projector for an amazing price, if you can live with the limitations I've described. Improvements: I highly advise to install a fine air filter on the air inlet, or else you will someday need to disassemble the projector to clean dust - very tricky but there are videos on YouTube for that. An external fan to help push the air through the fine filter is a great idea too. Never block the air outlet!
Instructions for installation: 1 - Put it in a flat horizontal shelf pointing to the center of the screen. The projector should be completely flat, centered and perpendicular to the screen. 2 - Adjust the focus side wheel until the center of the screen is in focus 3 - Adjust the keystone side wheel until the top and the bottom of the screen are also in focus, and the projected shape looks rectangular. 4 - Check the projected image up close to see if the focus is good. Fine tune the projector pan/tilt/focus/keystone until you get the best image you can.
Miscellaneous characteristics: projector has a menu to adjust color, sound and some other stuff. Has IR remote and IR sensor on the front and on the back. INPUTS: VGA, dual HDMI, USB, audio in/out. If you're looking in the same direction as the projector is pointing, the hot air comes from the left side. All inputs and ports are on the back.
Cost me about 200 USD. Despite the limitations of the optics, it's surprisingly decent. Being LED I hope it will last for a decently long time. I bought it from TouYinger on AliExpress, which gives me reason to trust their other products. Just beware that getting the perfect placement for it is very tricky if you have a fixed size screen. It's much easier if you have an entire wall so you have more flexibility for positioning it perfectly perpendicular to the wall.

2024.03.18 23:52 KB4284848 [OnePlus External Review] A OnePlus 12 Review

[OnePlus External Review] A OnePlus 12 Review
Hello everyone, I’m KB4284848/ . I’ve used a OnePlus 5T from December 2017 until I upgraded to a Nord N10 in November 2020. I then switched to the OnePlus 10 Pro in 2022. While OxygenOS 12.1 made me quite sceptical due to the lack of feature parity towards 11 and its Frankenstein UI, OxygenOS 13, 13.1 and 14 convinced me that it's a distant memory.
With that said, it’s now time to talk about the OnePlus 12.
Picture of the OnePlus 12

First Impressions

I was very surprised by how small the box was compared to the 10 Pro one, but that’s because it does not contain a TPU.
OnePlus 12 (left) and 10 Pro (right) boxes
OnePlus 12 (left) and 10 Pro (right) boxes
Speaking of the box content, it consists of the phone (duh), a 100W SuperVooc charger with a 100 cm USB-A to USB-C charging cable, a SIM tray ejector, some stickers (yay!), a letter from Pete, a Red Cable Club card and the boring mandatory legal docs that are the Safety Guide and the Quick Guide.

OnePlus 12 additional box content
Upon removing the protective film, I immediately noticed the camera bump and the location of the flash. It felt weird at first coming from the 10 Pro but I think this gives the device a more premium look.
OnePlus 12 Flowy Emerald variant
The preloaded OxygenOS version on my unit was CPH2581_14.0.0.232(EX01). As the day one update CPH2581_14.0.0.404(EX01) was available for download, I immediately installed it. We are now three weeks later, and I am ready to share my thoughts about the device.

Display

The OnePlus 12 has a 6,82 inches AMOLED display allowing a 3168 * 1440 resolution. It supports up to 120 Hz refresh rate. Further, the display supports the LTPO 3.0 technology that allows the screen refresh rate to be lowered as low as 1 Hz (typically when AOD is triggered). The display also supports the Pro XDR mode, as well as the Dolby Vision mode. Regarding the brightness, I am pleased to report that the auto brightness feature works very well. Further, when putting my 10 Pro and the 12 side by side with the brightness value set to maximum on both of them, the 12 is clearly brighter, as shown on the below picture that I took with my OnePlus 5T.
OnePlus 10 Pro (left) and OnePlus 12 (right)
Not only the display supports Natural, Pro and Vivid colour modes, but it also supports Video Enhancement Engine and Adaptive Sleep. While the Video Enhancement Engine allows image sharpening (enhancing the quality of low quality images and videos) and video colour boost (widening of the colour gamut), Adaptive Sleep allows one to not have to tap on the screen to keep it alive. That is, if you enable the feature and set the auto screen-off function, the device will not automatically lock as long as the selfie camera detects you are watching the screen. A Nature Tone Display mode is further available and allows automatic adjustment of the screen temperature in function of the ambient lighting. However, it is not possible to have it enabled at the same time as the Bedtime mode, which is available in the Eye comfort and sleep submenu in Settings -> Display & Brightness. Lastly, there is an Ultra Anti-Flicker mode that compensates for PWM dimming.

Battery and Charging

After migrating my data from my 10 Pro (restoring ~200 apps), my SOT was absolutely terrible in spite of its 5400 mAh battery (3 hours with 20% left), as the device did not have enough time to compile the optimisation files that are needed to improve app performance. To remedy that without waiting for it to happen in the background under certain conditions (when the device is idle and plugged), I ran the following command in an ADB shell so that it would be performed immediately: cmd package bg-dexopt-job (source https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base.git/+/f7edab63d9358b9a4e0dbec3243f6db9f50a2bbe ). Following that, after a full charge of the device, I have obtained 8 hours SOT (with 19% left) for a usage that consisted of using Chrome, social media apps, and listening to Spotify.
I did not perform any wireless charging tests as I do not own a wireless charger. However, I’ve checked how long it would take to charge it while starting at 19% while using the SuperVooc 100W charger and the cable that comes with the device. It took 7 minutes to reach 50%, 14 to reach 75% and 29 to reach 100%. No apps but the clock one were opened in the background, and both the “Smart charging” and “Stop charging at 80%” battery health features were disabled.
OnePlus 12 at 19% of charge
OnePlus 12 battery health features set to disabled
OnePlus 12 at 50% of charge after 7 minutes
OnePlus 12 at 76% of charge after 14 minutes
OnePlus 12 at 100% of charge after 29 minutes

Connectivity

The OnePlus 12 supports Bluetooth 5.4 with the following codecs: aptX HD, aptX, LDAC, LHDC, AAC, SBC. Unlike the OnePlus 10 Pro , it supports LHDC for third party headphones. WiFi 7 is available, as well as NFC (next to the camera island), and an IR blaster. Thanks to the preloaded application named IR Remote, you can control with your phone almost everything that uses IR. While using it with a TV was straightforward, using it with my ISP TV decoder required me to search for the name of the manufacturer that made it (SagemCable). I cannot believe I am writing this, but when I received the device I thought I would never use the IR blaster, yet I’ve used my phone as a remote much more than I’ve used the remote itself those last three weeks.
Regarding phone calls, not only I am satisfied with their quality, but just like other reviewers I concur that the speaker is much louder than the one of phones I’ve previously used.

Performance

The OnePlus 12 CPU is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU. While the device is available in two different SKUs (12 GB of RAM with 256 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM with 512 GB of storage), I have the higher end one. While 256 GB of storage would have been enough for me, I think it is worth upgrading to the 512 GB variant while there is still a discount for it on OnePlus’ Store: instead of being sold for 1099 EUR, it is sold for 999 EUR, that is just 30 EUR more than for the 256 GB variant.
Games like Asphalt 9, HitMan Sniper and Boom Beach run fine on the device, without any noticeable performance loss.
Asphalt 9 video recording: https://i.imgur.com/e4IQXge.mp4
Temperature wise, in those scenarios the OnePlus 12 performs much better than the OnePlus 10 Pro. That is, while the OnePlus 10 Pro could feel quite warm during gaming, this is much less the case on the OnePlus 12. I guess that not only the SOC update (Snap 8 Gen 1 is known not to be perfect with regards to thermal management) played a role in this, as the OnePlus 12 features a newer cooling system that is told by OnePlus to reduce the heat up to 7 °C.
Also, while I do not personally like benchmarks as they do not reflect real word use, I have nonetheless ran Geekbench tests as I know that some community members are eager to compare scores towards other devices, but also following a software update. For all of the below tests, Geekbench version 6.2.2 was used while the device was running OxygenOS CPH2581_14.0.0.404(EX01) with no apps opened in the background.

2024.03.18 21:17 igotabridgetosell Ubiquiti Protect and POE Doorbell/Chime Issues

Hey all,
So I installed everything and it's been running for a week now. A lot of issues so far.
  1. My phone from remote location connecting to unifi protect on key+ gen 2 is very iffy. Like it connects 1/5 times. And I haven't had one ring alert to my phone when it rang. I have OPNsense router, do I need to add any rules to get this to work better?
  2. I tried to use wireguard VPN to make the connection better. It seems to work better w connecting to protect but the app keeps warning me to not use VPN. But even with wireguard I get no rings to my phone. I turned off battery optimization on wireguard app.
  3. The POE chime just failed yesterday. Doesn't even show up on my devices. It showed on my device for like 3 days, didn't chime once, then it just died.
  4. Enable IR without the LED light on the doorbell just doesn't work. The LED lights up w every IR trigger. So I have the IR completely off which removes the filter on the recording that makes it b/w. And searching on this, it's a known issue that hasn't been fixed for like a year lol.
  5. I think I hear the hard drive of the key+ gen2 going off every 15 seconds lol. I guess swapping the hd to ssd is possible. Why couldn't this be virtualized to use the same ssd I'm using for my other cameras? I just fail to see the necessity of it other than a tax.
Disappointed w this G4 pro POE doorbell so far. It looks nice but it should do the bare minimum of connecting ringing to my phone.

2024.03.18 13:30 For_Sure_Centauri Bluetooth not showing.

So, I switched to Linux mint today. Everything is fine just one problem. I used Samsung U flex with the windows before but in linux it's not showing under devices... not only that even my phone is not showing.
I didn't wanted to post this, So I tried to find a solution but I really could not understand much. I found https://www.reddit.com/linuxmint/comments/y3dyev/bluetooth_devices_not_detected/ this thread with similar problem and their problem was solved after they insatalled "BCM20702A1-0a5c-216f.hcd" which I do not know how to.
So, I have come to ask for help, here are some information that is helpful I guess.
$ ls /lib/firmware/brcm/*.hcd /lib/firmware/brcm/BCM-0a5c-6410.hcd /lib/firmware/brcm/BCM43142A0-105b-e065.hcd /lib/firmware/brcm/BCM-0bb4-0306.hcd $ inxi -Fxxxrz System: Kernel: 5.15.0-100-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 11.4.0 Desktop: Cinnamon 6.0.4 tk: GTK 3.24.33 wm: muffin dm: LightDM 1.30.0 Distro: Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia base: Ubuntu 22.04 jammy Machine: Type: Laptop System: Hewlett-Packard product: HP Pavilion 11 x360 PC v: 0978110000405F00000410180 serial:  Chassis: type: 10 serial:  Mobo: Hewlett-Packard model: 8050 v: 64.13 serial:  UEFI: Insyde v: F.21 date: 11/13/2014 Battery: ID-1: BAT1 charge: 19.7 Wh (100.0%) condition: 19.7/30.1 Wh (65.4%) volts: 8.2 min: 7.2 model: COMPAL PABAS0241231 type: Li-ion serial:  status: Full CPU: Info: dual core model: Intel Core M-5Y10c bits: 64 type: MT MCP smt: enabled arch: Broadwell rev: 4 cache: L1: 128 KiB L2: 512 KiB L3: 4 MiB Speed (MHz): avg: 956 high: 998 min/max: 500/2000 cores: 1: 998 2: 844 3: 986 4: 998 bogomips: 7981 Flags: avx avx2 ht lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 Graphics: Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 5300 vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: i915 v: kernel ports: active: eDP-1 empty: HDMI-A-1 bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:161e class-ID: 0300 Device-2: Chicony HP Truevision HD camera type: USB driver: uvcvideo bus-ID: 1-3:2 chip-ID: 04f2:b40e class-ID: 0e02 Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.4 driver: X: loaded: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa gpu: i915 display-ID: :0 screens: 1 Screen-1: 0 s-res: 1366x768 s-dpi: 96 s-size: 361x203mm (14.2x8.0") s-diag: 414mm (16.3") Monitor-1: eDP-1 model: AU Optronics res: 1366x768 hz: 60 dpi: 136 size: 256x144mm (10.1x5.7") diag: 294mm (11.6") modes: 1366x768 OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel HD Graphics 5300 (BDW GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 23.2.1-1ubuntu3.1~22.04.2 direct render: Yes Audio: Device-1: Intel Broadwell-U Audio vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:03.0 chip-ID: 8086:160c class-ID: 0403 Device-2: Intel Wildcat Point-LP High Definition Audio vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:1b.0 chip-ID: 8086:9ca0 class-ID: 0403 Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.15.0-100-generic running: yes Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: yes Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes Network: Device-1: Broadcom BCM43142 802.11b/g/n vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: wl v: kernel pcie: speed: 2.5 GT/s lanes: 1 bus-ID: 02:00.0 chip-ID: 14e4:4365 class-ID: 0280 IF: wlp2s0 state: up mac:  Device-2: Realtek RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: r8169 v: kernel pcie: speed: 2.5 GT/s lanes: 1 port: 3000 bus-ID: 04:00.0 chip-ID: 10ec:8136 class-ID: 0200 IF: enp4s0 state: down mac:  Bluetooth: Device-1: Broadcom BCM43142A0 Bluetooth Device type: USB driver: btusb v: 0.8 bus-ID: 1-4:3 chip-ID: 0a5c:216c class-ID: fe01 serial:  Report: hciconfig ID: hci0 rfk-id: 2 state: up address:  bt-v: 2.1 lmp-v: 4.0 sub-v: 210b hci-v: 4.0 Drives: Local Storage: total: 465.76 GiB used: 14.4 GiB (3.1%) ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: HGST (Hitachi) model: HTS545050A7E680 size: 465.76 GiB speed: 6.0 Gb/s type: HDD rpm: 5400 serial:  rev: AH10 scheme: GPT Partition: ID-1: / size: 456.89 GiB used: 14.4 GiB (3.2%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda2 ID-2: /boot/efi size: 511 MiB used: 6.1 MiB (1.2%) fs: vfat dev: /dev/sda1 Swap: ID-1: swap-1 type: file size: 2 GiB used: 208.6 MiB (10.2%) priority: -2 file: /swapfile Sensors: System Temperatures: cpu: 54.0 C pch: 49.5 C mobo: N/A Fan Speeds (RPM): N/A Repos: Packages: apt: 2177 No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list 1: deb [arch=amd64] stable main Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list 1: deb virginia main upstream import backport 2: deb jammy main restricted universe multiverse 3: deb jammy-updates main restricted universe multiverse 4: deb jammy-backports main restricted universe multiverse 5: deb jammy-security main restricted universe multiverse Info: Processes: 240 Uptime: 1h 59m wakeups: 1 Memory: 3.74 GiB used: 2.61 GiB (69.9%) Init: systemd v: 249 runlevel: 5 Compilers: gcc: 11.4.0 alt: 11/12 Shell: Bash v: 5.1.16 running-in: gnome-terminal inxi: 3.3.13 $ dmesg egrep -i 'bluefirm' [ 0.202761] DMAR: [Firmware Bug]: No firmware reserved region can cover this RMRR [0x000000009d800000-0x000000009fffffff], contact BIOS vendor for fixes [ 0.202775] DMAR: [Firmware Bug]: Your BIOS is broken; bad RMRR [0x000000009d800000-0x000000009fffffff] [ 0.222910] Spectre V2 : Enabling Restricted Speculation for firmware calls [ 0.764898] ACPI: battery: [Firmware Bug]: (dis)charge rate invalid. 2024.03.17 21:21 Daofoster Best Outdoor Security Cameras or Enhanced Home Security

Hello Reddit! As an enthusiastic tech aficionado and a seasoned expert in home security, I’m here to share my insights on the latest and greatest in outdoor security cameras. These devices aren't just about capturing footage; they're about offering peace of mind, deterring unwanted guests, and integrating seamlessly into our smart homes. Today's outdoor cameras come with a host of features like high-definition video, night vision, facial recognition, weather resistance, and even AI-driven alerts. They are the unsung heroes guarding our homes against potential intruders while we sleep or are away. But with so many options out there, choosing the right one can be as tricky as spotting a cat in a camouflaged curtain! Let's break down the pros and cons of some of the top contenders in the market, to help you make an informed decision. Here’s a comparative table to kick things off:

TOP 5 Outdoor Security Cameras:

Amazon Links PROS CONS
eufy Security eufyCam S330 High-quality imaging, facial recognition Higher price point
Arlo Pro 4 Great smart home integration, wireless installation Requires hub purchase for some features
GALAYOU Budget-friendly, easy installation Limited smart detection features
Noorio Security Camera B210 Long battery life, waterproof Occasional Wi-Fi connectivity issues
Blink Outdoor 4 Affordable, user-friendly Limited image quality compared to others

# 1 Eufy Security S330 Security Camera Outdoor Wireless: A New Era of Home Security

Revolutionize Your Home's Safety and Convenience

The Eufy Security S330 Video Doorbell is a remarkable addition to modern home security solutions. Its innovative design incorporates not one, but two cameras, providing unparalleled coverage. The primary camera records in crisp 2K resolution with a 160° field of view, while the secondary 1080p camera, angled towards your porch, ensures no detail is missed, particularly effective for package theft prevention.
Six months into using this new surveillance system, I'm eager to share my personal insights. Frankly, it's surpassed what I had hoped for. My decision to upgrade was driven by the frustration with my old, hardwired camera system, which was archaic and not compatible with recent Windows operating systems - a real hassle.
I didn't have high hopes for the camera on my porch because it doesn't get much direct sunlight. However, the integrated solar panel was a revelation. It keeps the camera charged with just the ambient light, which is impressive considering it only sends about 1 to 2 alerts per week - a testament to its efficiency. In contrast, the camera on my garage, which enjoys plenty of sunlight, manages around 10 to 20 alerts every day. Even as the days grow shorter in the fall, it still retains about 70% charge.
The signal strength is remarkably strong, considering my home's thick, 12-inch insulated concrete walls. The unit inside my kitchen pantry communicates flawlessly with the cameras, including the one on my garage which has to transmit through two interior walls, an exterior wall, and the garage door.
I'm particularly impressed with the AI recognition. It accurately identifies people from various angles, not just straight on. The night vision is pretty good, though not quite perfect. It works well within a limited range, but I think adding some IR repeaters could expand its coverage and make it even better.
Daytime image quality is exceptional, and the user-friendly app really enhances the experience. Setting everything up was straightforward, and the app's responsiveness, even on mobile data, deserves applause. I appreciate being able to adjust the motion detection sensitivity, which is particularly useful for the garage camera that often picks up false alerts caused by the wind.
Drawing detection zones is a useful feature, but adjusting the points on the edges of my phone's screen can be a bit tricky. It would be great to have the option to do this on a PC for added convenience.
One suggestion I have is for a scheduler to set "do not disturb" times, which would help reduce unnecessary alerts during busy periods.
One small gripe is that the camera mounts need to be tightened well to prevent any movement over time. Despite this minor issue, I wholeheartedly recommend this system and am looking to expand it with more units.

# 2 Arlo Pro 4 Spotlight Camera: A New Standard in Home Security

Elevate Your Home’s Safety with Cutting-Edge Technology

The Arlo Pro 4 Spotlight Camera emerges as a formidable contender in the realm of home security cameras. It sets itself apart by offering direct-to-WiFi connectivity, eliminating the need for a separate hub. This wire-free camera boasts an impressive 2K video resolution, ensuring detailed and sharp footage in both day and night settings. Its color night vision, powered by a spotlight, enhances visibility and detail in low-light conditions. While its specs are similar to its predecessor, the Pro 3, its streamlined setup and smart home integration make it a noteworthy upgrade.
I recently decided to enhance my home's security system by installing cameras. After some research, I settled on the Arlo Pro 4 cameras, despite their higher price point, believing they would be a worthwhile investment. One of the features I particularly like is the magnetic mounts – they're strong, easy to set up, and so far, they've withstood windy conditions without any issues.
When purchasing these cameras, I had the option to connect them to my existing WiFi router or use a separate hub. Since these cameras only connect to the 2.4 GHz frequency and most routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, I had to switch my mobile device to the 2.4 GHz network for setup. I didn't want to disable the 5 GHz band on my router, as past experiences taught me that such changes often lead to new problems. So, I opted for the Arlo Hub VMB 4540.
Before installing, I downloaded the Pro 4 camera manual and thoroughly read through it. The first step was to download the Arlo Smart App on my mobile device. Once I got the hang of the app, setting up the smart hub and cameras was straightforward.
To find the best spots for camera installation, I used the Airport Utility App. This app allowed me to walk around my house and scan for the best 2.4 GHz signals. I looked for signal strengths between -50 dBm to -68 dBm, which are ideal for the cameras. Although the app isn’t necessary – the camera setup process includes a similar feature – I wanted to pre-determine the best locations for strong signal reception.
I installed three cameras and kept my router and smart hub about 20 feet apart to avoid signal interference. The ethernet cable provided with the system is relatively short, around 4 to 5 feet, but I wanted the hub farther from my router and wireless printer to prevent any signal disruptions.
The smart hub emits a 2.4 GHz signal, which has a longer range than 5 GHz. I also bought the Arlo Battery Charging Station for convenient simultaneous charging of two batteries. The batteries that came with the cameras were partially charged and reached full capacity within an hour, whereas the additional batteries I ordered took several hours to fully charge. Having a full set of charged replacement batteries means I can quickly swap them out without affecting the cameras' positioning.
The Arlo App's activity zones are handy for customizing motion alerts. I've been impressed with the sound quality captured by the cameras' microphones and speakers. Arlo offers a free three-month trial for their app, after which it costs $9.99 per month to maintain the full range of features, which I'm inclined to subscribe to.
For backup storage, I installed a 128 GB flash drive in the smart hub. This setup ensures that events are recorded both in the cloud and locally, with the flash drive set to overwrite old recordings as it fills up.
The 2K resolution of the Pro 4 cameras is very good, and I didn't see the need to spend extra for 4K resolution. Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase. However, I was disappointed to find that the three-pack of cameras I bought came with only two magnetic mounts and one Arlo adjustable mount. I had to buy an additional two-pack of magnetic mounts. Another issue is that, in my 2400 square foot ranch house, the hub's signal wasn't strong enough to cover my entire backyard. I had to settle for a partial view from a side-mounted camera. Considering range extenders or an additional hub wasn't feasible due to the need for an ethernet connection to my WiFi router. Despite these drawbacks, my overall experience with the Arlo Pro 4 cameras has been positive.

Storage Options

Arlo offers various subscription plans for cloud storage, starting at $4.99/month. Local storage requires additional hardware, like a hub and an SD card or USB drive.

Installation and Setup

The installation process of the Arlo Pro 4 is straightforward and user-friendly, making it accessible even for those without prior experience with security cameras. It includes a magnetic charging cable, wall mount, screw kit, quick start guide, and video monitoring decal.

Conclusion

The Arlo Pro 4 Spotlight Camera is an excellent choice for those seeking a high-quality, versatile security camera that integrates seamlessly into a smart home ecosystem. Its direct Wi-Fi connectivity, superior video quality, and advanced features provide a reliable and efficient security solution. # 3 GALAYOU Security Camera: Your Eye in the Sky

Secure Your Space with Advanced Surveillance

The GALAYOU Security Camera, a versatile and efficient solution for both indoor and outdoor surveillance, stands out in the realm of home security. This camera, offering a 2K resolution and equipped with color night vision, ensures superior video quality around the clock. It's designed to be wire-free and weatherproof, making installation flexible and suitable for various environments. The smart PIR motion detection with a siren, coupled with two-way communication, adds an extra layer of security, actively deterring potential intruders and allowing homeowners to communicate through the camera.
I previously owned different wireless security cameras, but they all had the drawback of needing frequent and costly battery replacements, as they ran out of power quickly. Then, I discovered the GALAYOU camera, a game-changer with its rechargeable feature, eliminating the need for constant battery purchases. The battery longevity is impressive, and both the image and sound quality are exceptionally clear. This camera offers two-way communication and a variety of motion detection modes, including for people, vehicles, pets, and packages, along with adjustable sensitivity settings.
The night vision capability is excellent, thanks to its infrared mode. When it's dark, white lights turn on automatically, and the footage switches to color. I can use my phone to communicate through the camera using its built-in speaker and app. The app also allows me to activate the light or an alarm, and the camera supports video storage on a local SD card. It has a convenient rubber panel underneath for inserting the microSD card and for charging.
What I really appreciate is the instant notifications on my phone whenever the camera detects activity. The setup is straightforward – just download the app and configure the camera. The app is user-friendly and suitable for both indoor and outdoor camera placement. For its very affordable price, this camera has been a great investment. It's absolutely worth the cost, and I'm thoroughly satisfied with my purchase.

It blends high-quality video, advanced night vision, and smart detection into a compact, user-friendly package. # 4 Noorio B210 Security Camera: Ultimate Protection with Clarity

A Comprehensive Security Solution for Modern Homes

The Noorio B210 Security Camera is a remarkable innovation in the realm of home security. Offering 2K resolution for crystal clear imagery, this camera is designed to deliver both indoor and outdoor surveillance with ease. Its wire-free design and magnetic mounting system offer unparalleled flexibility in installation, allowing users to secure any area of their home effortlessly. Adding to its impressive features are the color night vision, a spotlight for enhanced visibility, and smart integration with Alexa for a hands-free experience.
I recently got a new security camera, and I'm quite impressed with its performance. The setup process was incredibly straightforward, taking only about 10 minutes from unboxing to full operation. One minor issue I encountered was with the QR code needed for setup via the free app. Unlike what one might expect, the QR code isn't on the box but rather on the camera itself, printed in very light gray ink and easy to miss.
The camera arrived fully charged, but I still followed the instructions to charge it for 24 hours to ensure a full battery. After 13 days of use since January 22, the battery is still at 87%. Although the advertisement claims six months of battery life, based on my usage, I expect it might last over a month. However, it's important to note that I only turn it on at night, which could be affecting battery life. The firmware is up to date, and that's all I can comment on regarding the battery for now.
Mounting the camera is as simple as advertised. It's genuinely magnetic, attaching securely without the need for a steel mount. They do provide a separate bracket with a steel back for non-magnetic surfaces, but the magnetic feature was a major selling point for me.
Take a look at the photo I've attached. The camera is mounted on a steel lawn chair without screws or glue, just using its magnetic base. It's surprisingly secure, even withstanding below-freezing temperatures, winds over 20 MPH, and heavy rain, proving its weatherproof capability.
The camera has a little red light indicating when it's recording. It doesn't record continuously but is triggered by motion. I haven't explored potential streaming capabilities.
The camera is highly adjustable within its base, allowing for a wide range of angles while maintaining a secure hold.
Regarding night vision, it automatically switches between night and full-color modes based on lighting, though these settings might be adjustable in the app.
It's also worth noting that the camera has 16 GB of internal storage. This was unclear in the advertisement, but there's no need for an external SD card, and it doesn't even have a slot for one.
Transferring videos from the camera is straightforward. They can be downloaded to a phone via the app and then uploaded to a cloud service for easy access. The camera has a USB-C port, which might allow for direct transfers to a computer, though I haven't tried this.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this camera. I give it 4 stars for picture quality; it's not quite "2K" as claimed, but it's still high definition. You can see the video quality for yourself.

# 5 Blink Outdoor 4th Gen 2-Camera + Mini: Smart, Secure, Seamless

Elevate Your Home Security to the Next Level

The Blink Outdoor 4th Gen 2-Camera + Mini system is a cutting-edge security solution that offers comprehensive protection for your home. This smart security camera setup, known for its HD live view, two-way talk, and motion detection, is designed for easy installation and seamless integration with Alexa. The 2K resolution and color night vision ensure crisp, clear footage, day and night. The system's wire-free design, combined with a magnetic mount, offers flexibility in installation, and the smart home integrations with Amazon Alexa enhance its functionality.
I snagged a set of these cameras during a Black Friday deal, and I'm thoroughly pleased with my purchase. My main requirement was to avoid any subscription-based services, and this system perfectly meets that need with its included base station.
Setting up was a breeze. I just plugged in the base station and inserted a USB stick for recording storage. The cameras are wireless, making them easy to install wherever needed. The battery life is impressive; they claim it can last up to 2 years, and replacement batteries are affordable.
The picture quality is excellent. While the motion detection isn't quite as sensitive as my Ring doorbell, it's reliable enough to notice when someone is delivering a package in my driveway or when guests arrive through the garage. The alerts are prompt, and accessing the cameras through the phone app is quick, taking only a few seconds.
There were a couple of minor issues, such as the cameras picking up heavy snowfall and recording numerous short videos when I'm outside within their view. However, this is something my Ring camera does as well, so it's not a significant concern.
Overall, for the price, I'm 100% satisfied. There are no additional fees, and the cameras provide a good view of my side and backyards. I appreciate the ability to add lights and the local storage feature, which allows me to store as much or as little footage as I want.

Choosing the Best Outdoor Security Cameras: A Comprehensive Guide

In the era of advancing technology, ensuring the security of your property has become more accessible and efficient. One of the most critical steps in bolstering home security is selecting the right outdoor security cameras. This comprehensive guide delves into the myriad aspects you should consider when picking superior outdoor CCTV solutions.
Understanding the Importance of Outdoor Security Cameras
Outdoor surveillance systems play a pivotal role in home security. They act as a deterrent to potential intruders and provide crucial evidence in the event of a security breach. With the advent of smart surveillance, these cameras have transcended traditional roles, offering features like remote monitoring and integration with other smart home devices.
Key Features to Look For
When selecting a security camera, certain features are non-negotiable. Night vision capabilities ensure your property is monitored even in low light conditions. Opting for weatherproof cameras guarantees performance irrespective of weather conditions. Furthermore, motion detection technology helps in alerting homeowners to any unusual activity in real-time.
Top Brands and Technologies
Brands like Ring, Nest, and Arlo are at the forefront of outdoor security technology. Offering high-resolution cameras, often in 4K UHD, they provide crystal clear footage. Wi-Fi connectivity in these devices enables remote monitoring, allowing you to view live footage from your smartphone or tablet.
DIY vs. Professional Installation
The installation of outdoor cameras can be approached in two ways: DIY security camera installation or professional setup. While the former can be cost-effective and customizable, the latter ensures expert installation and often comes with additional support.
Smart Home Integration
Modern outdoor cameras seamlessly integrate with smart home ecosystems. This connectivity not only allows for remote monitoring but also enables features like receiving notifications on your mobile device and controlling camera settings remotely.
Ensuring Security and Privacy
In an age where data privacy is paramount, selecting cameras with robust security features is crucial. Look for systems with data encryption and secure storage options to protect your surveillance footage from unauthorized access.
User Experience and Navigation
A user-friendly interface and customizable settings are vital for a hassle-free experience. Cameras that offer easy navigation through their settings and features enhance the overall user experience.
Maintenance and Durability
Opt for cameras with a durable build and resistance to weather elements. Maintenance tips provided by manufacturers can help in ensuring the longevity of your security system.
Budget Considerations
While considering security solutions, it's essential to balance quality with affordability. There are cost-effective camera options available that do not compromise on essential features.
Leveraging Reviews and Recommendations
Before making a purchase, consulting expert opinions and consumer ratings can provide valuable insights. Looking at top-rated models can guide you in making an informed decision.
Conclusion
Choosing the best outdoor security camera involves considering various factors from features and technology to installation and budget. By following this guide, you can make an informed decision that ensures the safety and security of your property.

I posted this a while back: https://www.reddit.com/NecroMergecomments/1b4836p/222m_sibling_rivalry/
I have since refined my tool a bit more to include some convenience features such as multitap and automerge. I also thew in some caching capabilities so it isn't so laggy when going back a couple of seconds.

2024.03.14 21:48 Silverback66 C9 HDMI power sync

I've seen a few posts addressing a similar issue but nothing I've found has worked.
I am using an LG sound bar and a Chromecast HD with my LG C9 and I've been having issues with the power sync working. First off, a known issue is that, for the time being my sound bar is sitting in front of the TV where it blocks the IR receiver on the TV. I'm planning on wall mounting the TV soon though. So that won't be a problem anymore.
A while back, maybe 5 or 6 months, I couldn't get the Chromecast remote to control the sound bar volume. Then suddenly everything started working as expected.
Last night my 1yr old got a hold of the Chromecast remote and now it's not working properly again. The settings all seem correct. On the TV the HDMI power sync options are on, on the Chromecast I have the controller buttons set to control the LG sound bar. The Chromecast remote turns the sound bar off and on and controls the volume like I want, but the TV won't power off with the sound bar now. I tried a factory reset on the TV as well as unplugging all the HDMI cables and power cables and plugging them back in. But still noting. Any ideas?

2024.03.14 18:37 cvc7chris Dell or Lenovo

I was given these 3 options for a new work laptop. My current computer is a dell latitude 3520. The hinges took a crap but works well. I suggested Lenovo as i've always liked the Thinkpads. I also suggested a touchscreen due to possibly the hinges being heavier duty? This is what our IT department presented to me to pick from. Option 2 is an older Lenovo if i'm not mistaken but the specs don't look terrible on the Dell or Option 3 Lenovo. I work for a general contractor in project management so i will be on site at times and then office so i take my laptop everywhere. Sure i can pick a model and ask to upgrade or change the build slightly but also don't want to seem extremely picky/complicated. Also prefer a keyboard with T9 numeric keys for doing billing it comes in super handy.
What would you guys pick?

I will likely be a ‘lifer’ at the company I work at just due to the flexibility, freedom, and development opportunities afforded to me as a B.S. degree holder. To do what I do in my industry, typically specialty education (M.S. &/or P.hd) is necessary but I have wonderful coworkers, mentors, and supervisors who have given many hours to help educate me, partaken in many workshops and industry trainings, trained myself through self-study and research, and used networking connections to find myself in national and state level organizations that afford me access to a whole field of great minds to ask questions to.
As mentioned in the title, I’m in the process of developing a new department at my company and have a timeline of roughly a year to get it off the ground while also training someone to fill my current position. I expect this to come with a job title change and pay raise but that has not been fully fleshed out yet.
Main Job Monthly Take Home:
G: $3,449/month after deductions below
401K: $625 + $200 company match
HSA: $203.50 monthly contribution + $1500 company annual contribution
Vison + Dental: $20/month
Additional Federal Tax Withholding: $60/month (IRS calculator had us owing a little bit next year, trying to get as close as possible to 0 with some extra withholding)
Z: $3,605/month after deductions below
401K: $840 + $225 company match
FSA, Vision, Dental: ~$50/month

Section Three: Expenses
Mortgage: $1514/month
Utilities: ~200/month
Car Insurance (2 cars): $93/month
Car 1 (7 more payments left!): $381/month
Car 2: $556/month
G - ISA: $87.77/month
Z - ISA: $352.02/month
Yes, both my husband and I have Income Share Agreements…. I would NOT recommend this to ANYONE EVER. We were taken advantage of by the university we attended and were lied to about the funding source and purpose. Ended up being that our university partnered with a huge hedge fund to fund Income Share Agreements with false projected salaries to make future payment assumptions upon. In my husband’s case, we will pay less than he borrowed but for me, I will pay more than I borrowed. We are 4 years into our 10-year income share agreements. Unfortunately, not covered in any borrower’s defense and despite a lot of local media coverage there has been so collective action lawsuit or anything for us to take part in so we’re just kind of screwed. If we lose our jobs however the payment goes to $0 so there are a few measures in place that give us a little bit of protection.
G - Student Loan: $113.67/month
Z - Student Loans: $273.54/month
Yoga/Pilates Studio: $99/month
Groceries: ~500/month

Cat Insurance/Food: ~100/month (Two cats + two insurance policies)

Wednesday: Z wakes up before me to get ready to go into the office. He goes in about two times a month but it’s about 75 minutes from our house. I get up after a few additional snoozes on the alarm and get ready. He heads out and I scoop the litter boxes, play with the cats, make my coffee, fill my water bottle, and head out as well. I get to the office, boot up my computer, put together a task list for the day, and update some projects I’m working on. After a 90-minute marketing meeting, I take a phone call from someone who is driving up some pretty crucial samples to my laboratory from a farming operation in Illinois. They’ll be here in about 2 hours. I grab my purse and head out into the nearest town to go purchase a dishwasher (company’s dime, not mine!) for the laboratory we are about 3 weeks from being completely done with building. I designed almost every aspect of this new laboratory, and even did the 3D proof of concept design drawing myself! I’m not sure how many people can say they’ve had as much involvement in a project like this or have been on the receiving end of such an amazing investment for not only the company but for the operation and logistics of our laboratory.
While in town, I pick up a Subway sandwich and bring it back to the office to have for lunch. $12.29. While eating my lunch I see my local yoga/pilates studio I attend is partnering with a local independent bookstore for an event next week that will benefit the bookstore. They are trying to expand into a second location and are fundraising to make it happen. The class is a $25 donation that the studio will match. I sign up. $25. When the samples arrive, I start doing an algal ID while my lab tech starts on the water quality. I’m walking around boxes as we are partially trying to pack and partially trying to still keep necessary supplies accessible. We currently work in about 100 sqft of area… Our 2000 sq ft space can not be finished fast enough.
I write up a report, do my time card for the past three days, and get the heck out of the office after summarizing some meeting notes into my project management software into some action items for further developing the new department I’m working on getting off the ground. I’ll work more on this tomorrow if time allows. It’s grocery pick up day! Groceries end up being $109.62 after some substitutions and unfulfilled items. I fill up the gas tank on the car for $38.52. The second car only gets filled up maybe once every other month depending on how much we’ve got going on. I drop the groceries off at home and get started on dishes and dinner while Z attends the State of the City address by our mayor on his way home from work. Z is running for a county government position and we are very involved in local politics so we try to attend pretty much everything we can to keep up to date on the goings-ons, I just simply would not have made it to the meeting on time and could not stare at the sink being that full any longer.
Z gets home and we have Steak and asparagus. My attempt at zucchini fries is a horrendous and an absolutely gross mushy mess and does not get eaten. We watch New Girl (Season 4) and then I eventually fall asleep on the couch while Z plays video games until about 10pm when he wakes me up to go to bed. We put the house to bed and then ourselves to bed.

Thursday: Z and I wake up, shower, and get ready. I fill up my water bottle, make my coffee, and head out the door VERY sluggish this morning. No need to pack my lunch as we are having lunch catered by the dealership where we buy our work trucks. We placed a truck order this year in the $X,XXX,XXX number range and made some promotional videos that went semi-viral so a thank-you lunch is being provided. I make some edits to a document I’m supposed to have done before our research meeting right before the meeting… and then sit through a 2-hour long meeting going over the year's research projects at all of our office locations. After that, some of us stayed to talk about a specific project call that is happening at noon to talk through specifics on the plan for management and monitoring this year as it is a VERY complicated water body with very complicated regulations. I’m not actually in the project call later, but I’ll be looking at these samples so getting a gist on the project is always helpful.
Lunch is wonderful and I snag some brownies to bring home for Z and I. Our CEO is in the office and we spend a long time talking about the goings-on in the area and I update them on the political issues around town as they snowbird part of the year. After a very long lunch, I get back to work and start working on a presentation outline for a conference I’ll be attending in 2 ½ weeks that I should have started a lot sooner. I eventually hit a wall with this and ID some algae that came in during the morning of meetings. After that, I check in on the task list I’ve got for the department I’m working on developing. There’s a bit of laboratory research we are working on accomplishing so that we can determine the viability of this new operational department so I review an SOP we are working on updating and set up a game plan for the next time we will tackling the method again. I leave work at about 4:45 to get to town for a 5:30 yoga class before heading home. I purchased an unlimited class pass for $99/month. I typically attend somewhere between 15-25 classes a month and will do two classes on Saturday’s sometimes depending on whose teaching and what classes are in rotation! I’d guess I pay about $7/class on average once you work in the very occasional late cancelation fee.
I get home around 6:45 and head upstairs to Z’s office to hang out with him and the cats. We do some work getting his schedule together for campaign things, talk about the letter to the editor he’s writing, and chat about our weekend plans. By the time we realize what time it is, we realize we need to make dinner. We phone it in and have a freschetta frozen pizza and have some devils lettuce while it cooks. We catch up on some youtube, watch two more episodes of New Girl to finish Season 4, and then I read a library book before going to bed at 10pm. Z joins me around midnight after spending a lot of time thinking about the city’s poor transportation and working more on his letter to the editor.

Friday: I wake up feeling refreshed. I get ready, fill up my water bottle, and make my coffee and my lunch (Turkey & Pepperjack sandwich, fancy yogurt, granola bar, some cheese, & clementines). There’s only a tiny bit of turkey leftover after my sandwich so I split the turkey between our two cats. Both our cats have M names but two insanely different personalities. One is a grandpa in a 2-year-old cat body, the other is a hellbender. I give the hellbender some first and then run over to the other cat and give him his half and then run back over to the hellbender and scatter some tiny pieces around him so it takes him longer to eat it to give grandpa a fair shot at eating his before hellbender can run over and steal his treats. Z helps me give Grandpa a fair chance by giving some encouraging pets.
Off to work and today I’m doing more lab work than I normally do as my lab tech is working from home so she could spend time with family and her twin sister. I try to be as fair and compassionate of a manager as humanly possible, especially since our ETO policy really sucks the first year of employment at just 40 hours of ETO. Before heading into the lab, I ask my mom if she wants to come up to a yoga class on Sunday with me if I buy brunch and she signs up for class. $7 I live about 90 minutes from my parents so we are always trying to find good excuses to get together. Then I use $30 in coupons I have for American Eagle to buy more of my favorite leggings that are on clearance. $27.78 I hope they aren’t getting rid of this style as it is my favorite legging I’ve had in YEARS. I work on some water quality, clean up the laboratory, and start packing some of our equipment into boxes that we won’t need in the next two weeks. We move into the new lab space in approximately 2 weeks! Speaking of which, I head over to the new lab and check on the progress so far. They have installed carpet in the office space and are installing cabinets in our dark room and bathrooms today! By lunchtime I’ve got a ton of reports to generate, lots of phone calls to make, still need to email out some results, and work on my conference presentation some more. I call it quits around 2:45 and head home. I’m over 40 hours for the week and don’t have anything else that HAS to get done today.
On my way home, Z’s dad texts us about going to an open sensory gym this evening with Z’s niblings. I ask if Z’s dad will bring us some bikes (I’m hoping to learn how to ride a bike soon!) and that I’d see him there to help with keeping the kids in line. Z and I chat and talk about our weekend plans when I get home, but I’m not home for long before heading off to my 4:30 yoga class. After yoga I drive home to switch cars so I can better fit bikes in the back of the car and drive off to the open gym. Z stays home and starts on some spring cleaning tasks. We are only just now, over 5 years into our relationship really learning how to divide and conquer but we are honestly crushing it. It ends up just being my father in-law and I and two of the three niblings but we still have a lot of fun! My father in-law loses in glasses in a ball pit at some point so the next time I’m in it with my neice, I hunt them down for him. I teach my two-year-old niece how to use a water fountain, and I think it’s her favorite thing at the whole gymnasium. It’s raining really bad when they close the gym, so we drop off the kids at their house and say goodnight then meet back at my house where my father in law backs his car up to our garage and we put the bikes in the garage. He even gives up a bike rack we can attach to the back of our car. It’s 7:30pm and dinner hasn’t been started yet, so I head inside why Z and his dad chat in the garage and start making a really quick stir fry with some frozen veggies, leftover zucchini, and leftover steak. I use a store bought sauce that I fancy up with some spices and seasonings in the pantry and dinner is ready in 20 minutes. We watch the last episode of The Curse by Nathan Fielder and it’s so insanely trippy I can’t even begin to summarize my thoughts. I read through the subreddit for The Curse and read a few reviews I found online before calling it a night.

Saturday: Saturday’s are usually our spendiest days as we tend to do a lot of our out-of-house shopping tasks on Saturday. Z and I wake up at 8am and start getting ready. I’m doing a double header of classes at the studio this morning so I get into workout gear and spend way too long braiding my hair. Usually Z will come downtown with me and work in a coffee shop on campaign things while I’m in class but he’s no where near ready when I need to leave for class or I’ll be late. He decides to stay home and do a few more spring cleaning tasks and we’ll go out when I get back. First up in a 45 minute group strength class where we work on muscle groups from largest to smallest, set to music and it’s SO FUN. It’s my first time ever doing this class but it itches that recovering marching band addict in my brain. After that, I do an hour long restorative yoga class and feel nice and refreshed afterwards. $14
I call Z after class and we discuss lunch options which results in me driving over to our favorite local deli and it’s closed so I drive home. I’m ravenous after two back to back classes and start eating trail mix while Z gets ready. We decide to grab Tropical Smoothie Cafe $25 before making a return at Joann Fabrics $11 and going to get cat food and litter. $79 We also end up in Target for a lot of household needs and they got a target circle deal for $15 gift card if you buy $50 in household care items. We also bought some easter candy and ice cream, a cute toy for the cats, refill razors for Z, conditioner, a new pair of tennis shoes and some socks for me, and two shirts for Z for work/campaigning. $178
We head home after this and put away everything we got while we were out. We open the cats new toy and play with them with it, before hanging out on the couch where I end up taking a two hour nap. When I wake up I feel really refreshed and my oura ring scores shot way up. I make dinner of meatloaf, mac & cheese, and mashed potatoes. From here, the rest of our evening is just eating dinner and watching Poor Things. I end up having a mini ice cream sandwich with a spoon of whipped cream and fall asleep pretty early.

Sunday: I wake up at about 8am which is actually 7am but time change :( . I send my mom a text to make sure she’s up and coming to 10am yoga. She’s heading out soon! My quads are so insanely stiff and sore this morning. I struggle a lot with DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) and have my entire life so this pain will only get worse for the next 24-48 hours. I stretch and get changed and work on writing this MD which feels very meta. I head out to yoga with a game plan to call Z when mom and I are done so he can join us for brunch in town. I get to the studio and set up props for mom and I and chat with some of the girls in the studio who are also very sore from the weights class on Saturday. Mom cuts it close, but makes it in the studio and gets set up just in time for class to start. I love this instructor SO much, she teaches a very dynamic stretching flow for all skill levels and shows an awesome variation for pigeon pose that uses a bolster that my mom and I gush over after class. $7 I call Z and let him know we are heading over to the restaurant for brunch.
I’m the person that loves to share food when eating with family. My mom orders a breakfast pizza, Z orders stuffed french toast w/ half order of biscuits and gravy, and I get coffee cake w/ a side of bacon. I eat a piece of my moms breakfast pizza and it is so insanely good. I dip my crust in some of Z’s gravy. The coffee cake is orange and sage flavored and this is not the first time I’ve had it. Z’s french toast is good, but not for me. He thinks the coffee cake is too sweet, so we end up with our respective meals. Typically we are a switch meals half way through kind of couple. Z pays because our rewards account is under his card, and we end up with 11 dollars off our meal. $47 w/ 25% tip. I drive my mom back to her car and we end up sitting around gossiping for a bit before she heads home. I get home and change into pj’s and play with the cats for a bit with their new toy. Z updates me on the outline he’s putting together for a project he and a friend are working on. I hang out on the couch with grandpa at my feet and play switch for a few hours. I’m really late to the game, but I’m currently playing Tears of the Kingdom and working on the Fire Temple. I ask Z to switch spots with me so I can charge the switch and play on the monitor at our desk. We do this/Z ends up playing Baulders Gate 3 until dinner time. We almost always order food on Sunday nights and make the poor decision to order Taco Bell after partaking in some devil’s lettuce. $37 w/ tip. We have dinner and watch youtube on the couch for an hour before I head off to bed.

Monday: Waking up really sucks today, it’s dark out and hellbender bites at my feet after our first alarm so I don’t even get to enjoy hitting snooze. Z and I shower, get ready, and I get out the door later that normal. I’m at the office by 8:30am but today our sewer line is being replaced… we are not allowed to use the bathroom after 9:15am. We have some auto transfers that happen every monday. $50’s each to our brokerage accounts and $100 each to our Roth IRAs. $300 total. By 10:45 I already have to pee and decide I’ll see how poorly this whole toilets thing is going for everyone else. Someone at my office is 39 weeks pregnant so she has claimed a bathroom as hers and is just peeing ontop of her own pee at this point. I’m definitely not up to peeing on top of my coworkers pee or trying to squat in view of the many cameras on property so I get in my car and head to the closest gas station. Halfway into my ten mile drive back into civilization I realize I’m going to be spending 30 minutes of my life today just going pee ONCE and that there is no way in hell that me, someone who pees every 60-75 minutes, am working from the office in this condition.
I text my supervisor to inform her and update my lab tech that she can go home if she wishes and work from home. I head home, have lunch with Z and set up at the desk in the living room to work on my powerpoint for the conference next week. This is the same location where I play switch a lot, so it’s a lot of fighting myself to get work done and not just say fuck it and do what I want to do instead. I make it to 4pm before caving and playing some tears of the kingdom until I need to leave for my 5:15 warm yoga class. My legs aren’t hurting as bad as they did this morning thank goodness, or I would not have made it through class. $7 I stop at Aldi and grab a bag of lettuce, chicken, coffee, two yakisoba noodles for Z, and dryer sheets. $18.12 I stop and get gas for car #1. $33 I want to make a pasta with some leftover veggies, but I meant to pick up some frozen garlic knots at aldi but forgot. I decide I’ll try and make them myself which I’ve done a few times. They turn out… okay. I should have added more salt to the dough but they still get the job done! We end up with a zucchini, onion, and pea alfredo pasta with the last of our leftover steak.
Z and I watch the first episode of season 5 of New Girl and then we clean up the kitchen. I make us brownie sundaes with leftover brownies from the catered lunch last week that I brought home. I always forget home much I love rainbow sprinkles! I play Switch for an hour before Z and I go to bed around 9:30pm.

Tuesday:
Getting up sucks again! I wake up and hellbender has all 4 of his paws touching my back which is cute. I get ready and pack my lunch (leftovers from last night). Z is reading on the couch when I leave, man what I would give to not have to commute every day. Lots of weird tasks today, I order a chemical cabinet that I should have ordered last week as well as I make an order for more sampling bottles for some of our remote offices. I work on my presentation until lunch time when my coworker and I head up to the new laboratory to see the office furniture is being built! It looks so good! After lunch, I’ve got an email from a lake we work closely with wanting to partner on a case study that will help bring the department I’m working on starting into fruition. I spend the next three hours deeply focused on creating some guidance documents, identifying the needs we will need to develop this project, reading a research paper that outlines a similar case study I would want to utilize as a guide, and chatting with my coworkers about the feasibility of doing this project as a cost-share project. The whole idea of this new department is to address the ROOT causation of harmful algal blooms and nuisance aquatic vegetation via sediment analysis and phosphorus management. I make some notes to bring to my coworkers who are helping guide me on this journey of mine as they are mentoring me through this process as they both have started and grown their own departments at our company.
I start packing up around 3:45 so I can make it to my 4:30 pilates reformer class. When I get to the studio it’s just 3 of today and it’s a pretty great but quick workout. My instructor is about to be gone for approximately 8 weeks without anyone replacing her and I’m going to miss these pilates classes while shes off doing some training hours and getting some medical work done. I stay after class chatting with her and helping clean up the studio. $7 While I was in class, Z went to the bank to work on getting his bank account for his campaign. They can’t help him because they aren’t sure what to do? So he goes to lowes and buys some new lights for our kitchen. He spends $17.48. I head home and tell Z we have to go outside it’s so nice today. His idea of fun is to get on the roof and clean our dryer vent…. I hold the ladder to help get him up there but once he’s up there I go around to the garden beds and pull weeds and leftover stems from last season that I never pulled out. I left my tomatoes and peppers in the ground to try and encourage any leftover fruit/vegetables on the stems to leave some seeds behind to volunteer plant themselves so I don’t have to buy new starts (I’ve grown my own seedlings before, I just didn’t have the time this year with Z running for local office). The dry stems staying up over fall and winter can also provide a safe place for overwintering bugs in their egg or pupae state, before pulling them up I make sure that theres no stragglers but they are all clear. I have almost an entire garden bed of strawberries already growing and my rhubarb in the same bed is poking through the dirt! I trim back the asparagus stems I left up as well for bug habitat. Z is done on the roof so I hold the ladder so he can come down. The cats are sitting at the back window and looking at us so concerned it’s frankly adorable.
We have a jack’s pizza for dinner with salad on the side. I have a bowl of vanilla ice cream with a ton of rainbow sprinkles as we watch 2 episodes of New Girl and then play our respective video games. Another night of going to bed earlier than normal at 9:30 as I still feel so messed up from the time change.

Reflection: It’s really interesting to write up a new money diary! First, reflecting on how my life has changed since my first money diary. We have had some lifestyle creep since our last diary. I attended a LOT of classes this week, which was more than I think I’ve ever attended before at my studio but we had some really awesome classes that aligned with my schedule during this time period. There a lot of things that have changed in our lives, like 2 cat additions we didn’t have and we have slowed down our lego collecting a LOT since early pandemic days. We still have a LOT of legos, but we routinely take them apart and let our friends build them/use them as decor in their homes too. I never expected to see my salary change as dramatically but it has been a huge blessing since my husband has had 1-2% salary increases annually since starting his job right after my first money diary.
Reflecting on this week in particular, there was a dramatic LACK of entertainment spending which is VERY not like us. We usually have SOME sort of entertainment expense each week wether it’s for future concerts/events or simple stuff like the movies or buying a new video game. We have both been playing games we’ve had for a long time, focusing on local events that tend to be free, or don’t have a ton of plans coming up as we have a long summer of doorknocking ahead of us for Z’s campaign. Our next big trip is in September for a string of concerts for our favorite band in Red Rocks, The Gorge, and several venues in the PNW. But it shouldn’t be too expensive as we will be camping and hosteling with friends as we travel around. We definitely spend more on food/eating out than necessary, but it is better than it has been in the past! It definitely still fits within our 50/30/20 so I’m not too worried about it.
