2024.05.17 21:22 SeanEchoTech Having a Blast + Fear Mastery advice
As of last night I became top of my country's leaderboard for the survival incursions and Braniac! I do wonder why the 1840 fear leveled characters don't have a high level in these modes... I assume they're somehow cheating.
Anyways guys gals any advice would be awesome. I noticed every 30 levels I would almost become stuck without changing my gear. At lv 90 I had to leave those big gun incursions behind. I've been fighting grunts, helping Ivy and taking on flash and batman infused goons until level 120 it's really slowing down.
My Harley spawns grenades, generates shield and poisons on melee hit. My grenade does 120k and 22m range. I've got the 50% less damage guns that stack extra damage. Except right now I don't have time to even shoot one enemy.
As I'm writing this I wonder if the slow down effects could help...
Basically if anyone can recall what gear they used at this point would be a great help otherwise I'll be stuck with mastery and will be repeating for exp to continue.

2024.05.17 05:39 EJC28 Eagles 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation
Round 1, Pick 22 - Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo: NFL: Terrific in all phases of the pre-draft process, Mitchell is a perfect fit for a Vic Fangio defense that uses a ton of man-to-man on the outside. He has all the traits to be a CB1 at the next level, giving Philadelphia exactly what they desire from a technical perspective at the position.
CBS Sports: B+. The Eagles wait and get the best corner in this draft. That’s smart. There was talk of them trading up, but now they land a player who fills a need with age creeping into their defense. Nice pick.
ESPN: The general belief entering the draft was that the Eagles would have to trade up to land one of the top corners. But the board fell general manager Howie Roseman's way. In Mitchell, they get a blazing fast (4.33 second 40-yard dash) playmaker who led the FBS with 15 pass breakups last season. He could make an immediate impact on a defense that finished second-to-last in touchdowns allowed (35) in 2023.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: His favorite snack is rice and pickle juice.
Round 2, Pick 40 - Cooper DeJean, CB, Iowa: NFL: The Eagles somehow managed to trade up and land DeJean, who might be best in a nickel/safety hybrid role, to supplement their Day 1 pick of Quinyon Mitchell. Consider the secondary upgraded. DeJean could do for the Eagles what Brian Branch did last year for the Lions. This feels like a terrific selection for a defense that was way overtaxed by season's end in 2023. Plus, DeJean is a quality returner.
CBS Sports: A-. Howie Roseman strikes again. DeJean is a fine tackler, dynamic athlete who can align anywhere and provides plus return ability. Fills a need in this secondary that needs reworking.
ESPN: One of the worst secondaries in the league last season will have a new look in 2024. After selecting Mitchell in the first round, the Eagles moved up in Round 2 to take DeJean, a multidimensional playmaking defensive back. He has experience at both corner and safety. Some project Cooper as a safety at the pro level, though there's a sentiment within Philadelphia's building that he can "do it all." DeJean proved to be a difference-maker for Iowa on defense -- he was named first-team All-American and Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year -- and was an impact punt returner as well.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Still needs to hold someone’s hand when crossing the street.
Round 3, Pick 94 - Jalyx Hunt, DE, Houston Christian: NFL: The rare Ivy League safety-turned-Southland Conference pass rusher. Hunt is an unusual prospect, but he's intriguing and athletically blessed enough to be a pass-rush project who can be groomed behind the scenes while he works out on special teams. His development could take time but might pay off in a big way.
CBS Sports: B-. Former Cornell safety turned small-school dominant edge rusher with tantalizing traits. Showed impressively advanced hand work despite being new at the position but still a work in progress. Size, length, burst, bend are there. Will take time to acclimate to better competition. Pick is all about upside.
ESPN: The Eagles roll the dice on a former safety with plenty of upside. Philadelphia is in a state of transition at the edge position. Haason Reddick was traded to the New York Jets this offseason and Bryce Huff was signed in free agency. Brandon Graham is likely playing his last NFL season and Josh Sweat is in the last year of his contract. Hunt, the 2023 Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year, has plenty of ability but needs time to develop.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: This feels like the appropriate place to remind you to drink water.
Round 4, Pick 127 - Will Shipley, RB, Clemson: NFL: Shipley was one of my favorite prospects outside of my top 100. He is an underrated athlete who runs with a competitive spirit and looks like a fine third option behind Saquon Barkley and Kenneth Gainwell.
CBS Sports: C+. Jack of all trades master of none. Works diligently between the tackles and has decent wiggle. Not overly elusive. Speed is a plus. And he’s very useful out of the backfield as a receiver.
ESPN: The Eagles add a versatile skill player to an already dynamic offense. Shipley rushed for over 800 yards last season and caught 31 balls for 244 yards, while also serving as an effective kick returner (28.6 yards per return). The new kickoff rules should increase the value of returners, and Philadelphia just added a couple intriguing options in Shipley and DeJean. He could earn a spot in the running back rotation overt time, as well, alongside Saquon Barkley and Kenneth Gainwell.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Spends his winters in Toledo… Spain. Not Ohio, are you insane?
Round 5, Pick 152 - Ainias Smith, WR, Texas A&M: NFL: A jack of all trades for the Aggies, Smith touched the ball in a variety of ways and might have to make the team on special teams initially. His smallish frame limits his upside, but Smith is competitive and useful.
CBS Sports: A. Experienced, older prospect with YAC juice and plus contact balance. Slot, possession type and plays bigger than his shorter size, but he comes with a compact frame overall. Catch radius is very tiny. Will take time to become a quality route-runner. Gadget-y type in college. Dynamic honed skills.
ESPN: Slot receiver was a need entering the draft, and the Eagles add an intriguing one in Smith. He had over 2,400 receiving yards at Texas A&M and also contributed as a runner, toting the ball 72 times for 405 yards (5.6 average). Smith can return punts and kicks as well. The Eagles have added multiple players in this draft with return abilities, including Cooper DeJean and Will Shipley.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Has a banana costume he wears during showers.
Round 5, Pick 155 - Jeremiah Trotter Jr., LB, Clemson: NFL: Last year, we had the feel-good story of Deuce Vaughn getting the chance to go to work with dad. This year, the division has delivered again on Day 3, with a second generation of Trotter landing in Philly. The younger Trotter has the hitting ability and intensity to make it, and not just as a legacy pick.
CBS Sports: A. Young, super-smart reasonable athlete at the off-ball LB spot. Speed can be special once he gets into top gear. Blitzing is a speciality. Active but not someone who plays at full throttle every play and tackling reliability could improve. Knows how to defeat blocks en route to the RB. What I love most are his ball skills and coverage chops underneath and at intermediate level. Dad was a beloved Eagle in the 1990s and 2000s.
ESPN: Never will a fifth-round pick be more celebrated in Philadelphia. Jeremiah Trotter Sr. is an icon in the city after eight memorable seasons in the middle of the Eagles defense in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Now his son will be in Midnight Green. Trotter Jr. had 88 tackles (15 for loss), 5.5 sacks and a pair of interceptions for Clemson last season, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He could have the chance to compete for playing time early, as he joins a linebacker room that includes Nakobe Dean, Devin White and Oren Burks.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Was on his schools varsity backwards alphabet team as a freshman.
Round 5, Pick 172 - Trevor Keegan, OG, Michigan: NFL: Michigan's OL talent ran deep, causing Keegan to shift between left tackle and left guard a few times, and he might not possess a superpower as an NFL prospect. But his toughness, football IQ and competitive nature might allow him to settle in as a seventh lineman on game days.
CBS Sports: D+. Limited athlete at guard but has plenty of experience and run-blocking skill. Best blocking in phone booth. Has minimal range but does have good burst off the ball. The speed just stalls almost instantly. Aware of stunts and blitzes just can’t always get there. Too early for him but I understand adding OL depth on Day 3.
ESPN: The Eagles address their need for offensive line depth with the addition of Keegan, a three-time All-Big Ten selection. He started three seasons at Michigan, playing primarily left guard, and was a captain last season for the national championship team. The Eagles still have to solidify a starter at right guard and need to build out depth following the departures of Jack Driscoll and Sua Opeta in free agency. Keegan will compete for a roster spot this summer and go from there.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He once quenched his thirst on the shores of Lake Minnetonka.
Round 6, Pick 185 - Johnny Wilson, WR, Florida State: NFL: On the opposite end of the spectrum height-wise from Malik Washington is Wilson, who will immediately be among the tallest receivers in the NFL at 6-foot-7. He's sort of a TE-WR tweener, lacking the speed of a wideout and the strength for a tight end, but you may call him a weapon -- possibly in the red zone.
CBS Sports: A-. Enormous wideout, essentially a sleek TE but has legit WR-like movement skills. Hands are incredibly boom-or-burst. A moose in the open field leads to him dragging defenders and is a capable blocker.
ESPN: At 6-foot-6, 231 pounds, Wilson is not your average receiver. It's easy to understand why the Eagles would want to take a chance in the latter rounds on a player who has rare size to go with 4.52 40-yard dash speed. He didn't post exceptional numbers in college (41 catches, 617 yards, 2 touchdowns in 10 games last season) but if he can develop on the next level, Wilson would be well worth the investment.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He won the amateur ninja warrior competition when he was 6.
Round 6, Pick 190 - Dylan McMahon, C, NC State: NFL: Center-only prospect on the next level, lacking desired length and NFL play strength. McMahon plays with good intelligence and technique, which serves him well against average competition, but he is likely to struggle when it comes to getting and keeping NFL competition blocked in both the run game and in pass protection. He will need to get bigger and stronger and play for a zone-scheme unit to have a shot at sticking on a roster.
CBS Sports: C+. One of the elite testers at the center spot in this class. Lacks supreme length and it hurts him at times. Counters drive him crazy for long stretches. Accurate when climbing to second level. Balance could improve. Project-y type with traits.
ESPN: McMahon played both guard and center in college. He can provide further depth as the Eagles prep for life without future Hall of Famer Jason Kelce. Cam Jurgens is expected to move from right guard to center to replace Kelce, leaving an opening at the right guard spot. McMahon will compete for a spot on the 53-man roster during training camp.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Keeps a case of skin flakes on hand….for you know….just in case.

2024.05.16 17:23 TruNorth556 At one time our leaders in the west took the threat of nuclear conflict seriously. Now we have Biden tossing around regime change and European allies escalating recklessly.
As a side note, it takes you back to a bygone era. When American leaders were larger than life figures. Powerful men, who for whatever their faults were, cared about the country and its future. Today we have feckless dotards with soy hipster handlers.
Professor Woodrow Wilson once said that every man sent out from a university should be a man of his nation as well as a man of his time, and I am confident that the men and women who carry the honor of graduating from this institution will continue to give from their lives, from their talents, a high measure of public service and public support.
"There are few earthly things more beautiful than a university," wrote John Masefield in his tribute to English universities--and his words are equally true today. He did not refer to spires and towers, to campus greens and ivied walls. He admired the splendid beauty of the university, he said, because it was "a place where those who hate ignorance may strive to know, where those who perceive truth may strive to make others see."
I have, therefore, chosen this time and this place to discuss a topic on which ignorance too often abounds and the truth is too rarely perceived--yet it is the most important topic on earth: world peace.
What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children--not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women--not merely peace in our time but peace for all time.
I speak of peace because of the new face of war. Total war makes no sense in an age when great powers can maintain large and relatively invulnerable nuclear forces and refuse to surrender without resort to those forces. It makes no sense in an age when a single nuclear weapon contains almost ten times the explosive force delivered by all the allied air forces in the Second World War. It makes no sense in an age when the deadly poisons produced by a nuclear exchange would be carried by wind and water and soil and seed to the far corners of the globe and to generations yet unborn.
Today the expenditure of billions of dollars every year on weapons acquired for the purpose of making sure we never need to use them is essential to keeping the peace. But surely the acquisition of such idle stockpiles--which can only destroy and never create--is not the only, much less the most efficient, means of assuring peace.
I speak of peace, therefore, as the necessary rational end of rational men. I realize that the pursuit of peace is not as dramatic as the pursuit of war--and frequently the words of the pursuer fall on deaf ears. But we have no more urgent task.
Some say that it is useless to speak of world peace or world law or world disarmament--and that it will be useless until the leaders of the Soviet Union adopt a more enlightened attitude. I hope they do. I believe we can help them do it. But I also believe that we must reexamine our own attitude--as individuals and as a Nation--for our attitude is as essential as theirs. And every graduate of this school, every thoughtful citizen who despairs of war and wishes to bring peace, should begin by looking inward--by examining his own attitude toward the possibilities of peace, toward the Soviet Union, toward the course of the cold war and toward freedom and peace here at home.
First: Let us examine our attitude toward peace itself. Too many of us think it is impossible. Too many think it unreal. But that is a dangerous, defeatist belief. It leads to the conclusion that war is inevitable--that mankind is doomed--that we are gripped by forces we cannot control.
We need not accept that view. Our problems are manmade--therefore, they can be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings. Man's reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable--and we believe they can do it again.
I am not referring to the absolute, infinite concept of peace and good will of which some fantasies and fanatics dream. I do not deny the value of hopes and dreams but we merely invite discouragement and incredulity by making that our only and immediate goal.
Let us focus instead on a more practical, more attainable peace-- based not on a sudden revolution in human nature but on a gradual evolution in human institutions--on a series of concrete actions and effective agreements which are in the interest of all concerned. There is no single, simple key to this peace--no grand or magic formula to be adopted by one or two powers. Genuine peace must be the product of many nations, the sum of many acts. It must be dynamic, not static, changing to meet the challenge of each new generation. For peace is a process--a way of solving problems.
With such a peace, there will still be quarrels and conflicting interests, as there are within families and nations. World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor--it requires only that they live together in mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement. And history teaches us that enmities between nations, as between individuals, do not last forever. However fixed our likes and dislikes may seem, the tide of time and events will often bring surprising changes in the relations between nations and neighbors.
So let us persevere. Peace need not be impracticable, and war need not be inevitable. By defining our goal more clearly, by making it seem more manageable and less remote, we can help all peoples to see it, to draw hope from it, and to move irresistibly toward it.
Second: Let us reexamine our attitude toward the Soviet Union. It is discouraging to think that their leaders may actually believe what their propagandists write. It is discouraging to read a recent authoritative Soviet text on Military Strategy and find, on page after page, wholly baseless and incredible claims--such as the allegation that "American imperialist circles are preparing to unleash different types of wars . . . that there is a very real threat of a preventive war being unleashed by American imperialists against the Soviet Union . . . [and that] the political aims of the American imperialists are to enslave economically and politically the European and other capitalist countries . . . [and] to achieve world domination . . . by means of aggressive wars."
Truly, as it was written long ago: "The wicked flee when no man pursueth." Yet it is sad to read these Soviet statements--to realize the extent of the gulf between us. But it is also a warning--a warning to the American people not to fall into the same trap as the Soviets, not to see only a distorted and desperate view of the other side, not to see conflict as inevitable, accommodation as impossible, and communication as nothing more than an exchange of threats.
No government or social system is so evil that its people must be considered as lacking in virtue. As Americans, we find communism profoundly repugnant as a negation of personal freedom and dignity. But we can still hail the Russian people for their many achievements--in science and space, in economic and industrial growth, in culture and in acts of courage.
Among the many traits the peoples of our two countries have in common, none is stronger than our mutual abhorrence of war. Almost unique among the major world powers, we have never been at war with each other. And no nation in the history of battle ever suffered more than the Soviet Union suffered in the course of the Second World War. At least 20 million lost their lives. Countless millions of homes and farms were burned or sacked. A third of the nation's territory, including nearly two thirds of its industrial base, was turned into a wasteland--a loss equivalent to the devastation of this country east of Chicago.
Today, should total war ever break out again--no matter how--our two countries would become the primary targets. It is an ironic but accurate fact that the two strongest powers are the two in the most danger of devastation. All we have built, all we have worked for, would be destroyed in the first 24 hours. And even in the cold war, which brings burdens and dangers to so many nations, including this Nation's closest allies--our two countries bear the heaviest burdens. For we are both devoting massive sums of money to weapons that could be better devoted to combating ignorance, poverty, and disease. We are both caught up in a vicious and dangerous cycle in which suspicion on one side breeds suspicion on the other, and new weapons beget counterweapons.
In short, both the United States and its allies, and the Soviet Union and its allies, have a mutually deep interest in a just and genuine peace and in halting the arms race. Agreements to this end are in the interests of the Soviet Union as well as ours--and even the most hostile nations can be relied upon to accept and keep those treaty obligations, and only those treaty obligations, which are in their own interest.
So, let us not be blind to our differences--but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to the means by which those differences can be resolved. And if we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.
Third: Let us reexamine our attitude toward the cold war, remembering that we are not engaged in a debate, seeking to pile up debating points. We are not here distributing blame or pointing the finger of judgment. We must deal with the world as it is, and not as it might have been had the history of the last 18 years been different.
We must, therefore, persevere in the search for peace in the hope that constructive changes within the Communist bloc might bring within reach solutions which now seem beyond us. We must conduct our affairs in such a way that it becomes in the Communists' interest to agree on a genuine peace. Above all, while defending our own vital interests, nuclear powers must avert those confrontations which bring an adversary to a choice of either a humiliating retreat or a nuclear war. To adopt that kind of course in the nuclear age would be evidence only of the bankruptcy of our policy--or of a collective death-wish for the world.
To secure these ends, America's weapons are nonprovocative, carefully controlled, designed to deter, and capable of selective use. Our military forces are committed to peace and disciplined in self- restraint. Our diplomats are instructed to avoid unnecessary irritants and purely rhetorical hostility.
For we can seek a relaxation of tension without relaxing our guard. And, for our part, we do not need to use threats to prove that we are resolute. We do not need to jam foreign broadcasts out of fear our faith will be eroded. We are unwilling to impose our system on any unwilling people--but we are willing and able to engage in peaceful competition with any people on earth.
Meanwhile, we seek to strengthen the United Nations, to help solve its financial problems, to make it a more effective instrument for peace, to develop it into a genuine world security system--a system capable of resolving disputes on the basis of law, of insuring the security of the large and the small, and of creating conditions under which arms can finally be abolished.
At the same time we seek to keep peace inside the non-Communist world, where many nations, all of them our friends, are divided over issues which weaken Western unity, which invite Communist intervention or which threaten to erupt into war. Our efforts in West New Guinea, in the Congo, in the Middle East, and in the Indian subcontinent, have been persistent and patient despite criticism from both sides. We have also tried to set an example for others--by seeking to adjust small but significant differences with our own closest neighbors in Mexico and in Canada.
Speaking of other nations, I wish to make one point clear. We are bound to many nations by alliances. Those alliances exist because our concern and theirs substantially overlap. Our commitment to defend Western Europe and West Berlin, for example, stands undiminished because of the identity of our vital interests. The United States will make no deal with the Soviet Union at the expense of other nations and other peoples, not merely because they are our partners, but also because their interests and ours converge.
Our interests converge, however, not only in defending the frontiers of freedom, but in pursuing the paths of peace. It is our hope-- and the purpose of allied policies--to convince the Soviet Union that she, too, should let each nation choose its own future, so long as that choice does not interfere with the choices of others. The Communist drive to impose their political and economic system on others is the primary cause of world tension today. For there can be no doubt that, if all nations could refrain from interfering in the self-determination of others, the peace would be much more assured.
This will require a new effort to achieve world law--a new context for world discussions. It will require increased understanding between the Soviets and ourselves. And increased understanding will require increased contact and communication. One step in this direction is the proposed arrangement for a direct line between Moscow and Washington, to avoid on each side the dangerous delays, misunderstandings, and misreadings of the other's actions which might occur at a time of crisis.
We have also been talking in Geneva about the other first-step measures of arms control designed to limit the intensity of the arms race and to reduce the risks of accidental war. Our primary long range interest in Geneva, however, is general and complete disarmament-- designed to take place by stages, permitting parallel political developments to build the new institutions of peace which would take the place of arms. The pursuit of disarmament has been an effort of this Government since the 1920's. It has been urgently sought by the past three administrations. And however dim the prospects may be today, we intend to continue this effort--to continue it in order that all countries, including our own, can better grasp what the problems and possibilities of disarmament are.
The one major area of these negotiations where the end is in sight, yet where a fresh start is badly needed, is in a treaty to outlaw nuclear tests. The conclusion of such a treaty, so near and yet so far, would check the spiraling arms race in one of its most dangerous areas. It would place the nuclear powers in a position to deal more effectively with one of the greatest hazards which man faces in 1963, the further spread of nuclear arms. It would increase our security--it would decrease the prospects of war. Surely this goal is sufficiently important to require our steady pursuit, yielding neither to the temptation to give up the whole effort nor the temptation to give up our insistence on vital and responsible safeguards.
I am taking this opportunity, therefore, to announce two important decisions in this regard.
First: Chairman Khrushchev, Prime Minister Macmillan, and I have agreed that high-level discussions will shortly begin in Moscow looking toward early agreement on a comprehensive test ban treaty. Our hopes must be tempered with the caution of history--but with our hopes go the hopes of all mankind.
Second: To make clear our good faith and solemn convictions on the matter, I now declare that the United States does not propose to conduct nuclear tests in the atmosphere so long as other states do not do so. We will not be the first to resume. Such a declaration is no substitute for a formal binding treaty, but I hope it will help us achieve one. Nor would such a treaty be a substitute for disarmament, but I hope it will help us achieve it.
Finally, my fellow Americans, let us examine our attitude toward peace and freedom here at home. The quality and spirit of our own society must justify and support our efforts abroad. We must show it in the dedication of our own lives--as many of you who are graduating today will have a unique opportunity to do, by serving without pay in the Peace Corps abroad or in the proposed National Service Corps here at home.
But wherever we are, we must all, in our daily lives, live up to the age-old faith that peace and freedom walk together. In too many of our cities today, the peace is not secure because the freedom is incomplete.
It is the responsibility of the executive branch at all levels of government--local, State, and National--to provide and protect that freedom for all of our citizens by all means within their authority. It is the responsibility of the legislative branch at all levels, wherever that authority is not now adequate, to make it adequate. And it is the responsibility of all citizens in all sections of this country to respect the rights of all others and to respect the law of the land.
All this is not unrelated to world peace. "When a man's ways please the Lord," the Scriptures tell us, "he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him." And is not peace, in the last analysis, basically a matter of human rights--the right to live out our lives without fear of devastation--the right to breathe air as nature provided it--the right of future generations to a healthy existence?
While we proceed to safeguard our national interests, let us also safeguard human interests. And the elimination of war and arms is clearly in the interest of both. No treaty, however much it may be to the advantage of all, however tightly it may be worded, can provide absolute security against the risks of deception and evasion. But it can--if it is sufficiently effective in its enforcement and if it is sufficiently in the interests of its signers--offer far more security and far fewer risks than an unabated, uncontrolled, unpredictable arms race.
The United States, as the world knows, will never start a war. We do not want a war. We do not now expect a war. This generation of Americans has already had enough--more than enough--of war and hate and oppression. We shall be prepared if others wish it. We shall be alert to try to stop it. But we shall also do our part to build a world of peace where the weak are safe and the strong are just. We are not helpless before that task or hopeless of its success. Confident and unafraid, we labor on--not toward a strategy of annihilation but toward a strategy of peace.

2024.05.15 12:43 1whiskeyneat Have grades become meaningless?
Honest question. Have been in a series of meetings with a subsection of our parent group that insists upon ALL of our students (read: their students) having at least A’s and B’s across the board in the next couple years. One of my immediate thoughts was, “Who’s allowed to get a C?”
From Harvard to middle school in the past 20+ years, and a generation is defined as about 22 years, the trend of grade inflation seems to be broad. Makes me wonder to what extent, if at all, grades are becoming meaningless. If the new floor is a B and if average grades are A- (looking at you, Ivy League), then what is a grade for?

2024.05.15 05:30 delibirdguy Top 500 Songs Ever (Subjective)
Over the course of the past few months I have been working on compiling a list of my 500 favorite songs. It was sort of challenge that I gave myself and I'm super pumped with how it turned out. There were a few rules (only 5 songs per artist being the big rule, among a few others), and here's the list I came up with. Thought it was fun, so wanted to share here and see if it might spark any discussion about song placement, lack of songs/artists, or see if anyone had any similar lists. All thoughts are welcome! Scroll down to "Discussion Prompt" if you are not interested in my adventures! Hunter's Log

-
Empty tables mean that the last activity took that long to complete before the next one. Thoughts
We are a day late to the post this time. Sorry! I only just discovered at this point that I could keep running after I ran out of stamina, it's just slow. Once you let go of the sprint button, you stop and become exhausted. Just another weird difference between this game and future ones.
That Gypceros hunt I did in Breeding Season was the most frustrating hunt I have had yet. Gypceros can sometimes have a funny hitbox on its tail attack, and the small monsters were a really nasty combo combined with the trees in the area making my camera spazz out. Sometimes, you miss quality of life in this game, like World causing your camera to faze through walls. I think I would have been able to do that quest far more effortlessly if I was not so tired at the time. However, MH2 often demands so much of its player that when I am having a bad day, it can feel impossible. My brain gets caught in a loop making the same mistakes over and over again because I am struggling to focus. Usually, though, it's frankly not that difficult of a game (yet).
Discussion Prompt: Is pre-hunt prep important to Monster Hunter?
Something people often assume is that preparation in Monster Hunter games gets less intense the further along you get in the series. What I expected because of this, was that MH2 would have me spending more time preparing to hunt than compared to previous games. This did not turn out to be true, and I actually spent about the same amount of time preparing. If anything, the time I spend
feels like less of a chore because I have to make impactful decisions about what I bring and why. The payout for preparing well is also very immediate. When you spend time gathering the materials for a full stack of mega potions, you can
directly see them saving your skin, and ending a hunt overprepared is very satisfying (or disastrous if you were so overprepared that you forgot to have space to take items back).
Still, I had a bizarre realisation while playing - There are "quality of life" changes I would like to see for MH2, that were never used in future games in favour of what feels like enormous overcorrections. My main example would be having an item box in camp. As-is in 5th generation (maybe 6th will fix this, who knows), having your item box in camp absolutely destroys any sense of preparedness outside of having the correct equipment. What I would have loved to have instead, in retrospect, is being taken through each stage of preparation when you
go out on the quest. The player would be taken through the menus for the item box, their equipment, asked what food they want, and so on. The player would be able to easily and quickly check which quest they accepted while doing this, and there would be scenes of their character preparing in the background (similar to when you are in the tent in Rise or World). I think this would have really made the player feel cool and professional at the same time as making sure they do not accidentally leave with the wrong items or equipment. If the player is already prepared, they could just as easily skip through all of that and go right to the hunt.
What do you think? Is pre-hunt preparation important to Monster Hunter in your opinion? Do the newer games sort of forget about it, or do they do it fine? What level of necessity in preparation is "Monster Hunter"?
Thank you for reading, and please keep discussion polite and snark-free!

2024.05.12 09:07 EJC28 Bears 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation
Round 1, Pick 1 - Caleb Williams, QB, USC: NFL: This could be a franchise-changing moment for the Bears. Williams was this class' presumptive QB1 dating back to the beginning of this process. The USC product has the arm, football IQ, creativity, moxie and clutch playmaking ability that every coach wants at the game’s most important position. Chicago believes he is the transcendent player who can guide this team to success and championship contention.
CBS Sports: A-. They say he’s generational, and he might be, but there are some concerns. I like his game, but I would have taken Jayden Daniels. Only time will tell.
ESPN: The Bears hope Williams will end their decades-long search for a franchise quarterback, one that stretches back 85 years to Sid Luckman. He is no doubt an upgrade over the recently traded Justin Fields with his accuracy (66.9 career completion percentage) and ability to operate effectively out of structure by extending drives and making off-platform throws. The Bears place high importance on a quarterback's effectiveness on third down, in the two-minute drill and during end-of-game situations. Williams does all of those things exceptionally well, and the Bears finally have the right infrastructure in place to develop a rookie quarterback.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Tormund Giantsbane has always been his role model.
Round 1, Pick 9 - Rome Odunze, WR, Washington: NFL: Odunze is a physical playmaker with positional flexibility who’ll elevate the Bears offense from the jump. A contested-catch wizard, Odunze has the luxury of being an apprentice under veteran Keenan Allen before taking over as the team’s WR1.
CBS Sports: B+. This is smart pick for the Bears, even if taking an edge rusher filled a bigger need. Now you have a young receiver to grow with Caleb Williams. Odunze will give them a nice three-man receiver group.
ESPN: It's hard to argue that the Bears don't have one of the league's best wide receiver trios between DJ Moore, who put up a career-best 1,364 yards last season (sixth in the NFL), Keenan Allen, whose 1,243 yards were his second most in 11 seasons, and Rome Ozunde, who led college football with 1,640 receiving yards. Chicago's passing offense should make major strides under new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron with the amount of talented pass-catchers at his disposal, which was set up to help Caleb Williams achieve early success as a rookie. After working out with his new teammates in Los Angeles last week, Odunze can already tell how all the pieces will fit on offense, between Moore's "explosiveness," how "smooth" Allen runs his routes, and the fact that the Bears' new quarterback "can sling the ball wherever he chooses."
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Has a driveway constantly covered in sidewalk chalk.
Round 3, Pick 75 - Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale: NFL: Amegadjie might have been a top-50 selection had he not been limited to four games last season and restricted in what he could do, workout-wise, leading up to the draft. With his mass and length, Amegadjie passes the eye test instantly, and he often dominated Ivy League competition, but he has "developmental player" written all over him.
CBS Sports: A-. Legitimately got Trey Smith vibes watching him on film in Ivy League. Ridiculously long, thick masher with OT frame who probably plays guard at next level. Strong, methodical movements. Didn’t see many counter moves in college and is a good, not remarkable athlete. Prudent pick for Chicago.
ESPN: The Bears have selected offensive players with all three picks thus far, which affirms their commitment to strengthening the infrastructure around quarterback Caleb Williams. Amegadije was Yale's starting right guard in 2021 before transitioning to left tackle as a junior, the position he says he's most comfortable playing. The 6-foot-5, 326-pound offensive lineman has starting potential and could push Braxton Jones, who has been Chicago's starting left tackle since 2022. That probably won't happen in his rookie season, according to GM Ryan Poles, but the Bears have prioritized adding competition along the offensive line this offseason. Despite his 2023 season ending after four games because of a partially torn quad, Amegadije has been medically cleared to play by the Bears.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Will often walk around eating shredded cheese straight from the bag.
Round 4, Pick 122 - Tory Taylor, P, Iowa: NFL: The Aussie rugby-style punter helped Iowa win a lot of games with his directional kicking and penchant for burying opponents deep. He's also effective in poor weather, which makes sense for a team like Chicago, but with so few picks this year, was this the best value for the Bears?
CBS Sports: C-. Tory Taylor, P, Iowa. Far and away the best punter in this class. Huge leg he showcased over multiple seasons and plenty of experience. Inside the 20 he’s money too. But is this the best allocation of one of Chicago’s four picks in this draft? No.
ESPN: Taylor was effectively Iowa's offense last season when he totaled an FBS record 4,479 punting yards and a 48.2-yard average. The Bears used their fourth and final draft pick on the best punter in college football (he won the Ray Guy Award in 2023) and are clearly thinking that Taylor will replace Trenton Gill, who finished last in net average last year (38 yards) by using a pick this high on a specialist. The Australian-born punter didn't have much contact with the Bears during the pre-draft process, but he hit it off with special teams coordinator Richard Hightower at the combine and is eager to bring his 46.3-yard career punt average -- an FBS record -- to Soldier Field and kick in the inclement weather conditions he grew accustomed to in college.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: The theme song to Dark Wing Duck will activate him like a Russian sleeper agent.
Round 5, Pick 144 - Austin Booker, DE, Kansas: NFL: Right when we thought the Bears were done with the draft, they pull us back in. Chicago traded back in (for a 2025 fourth-rounder) to nab a fascinating pass-rush project in Booker, who caught my eye at the Senior Bowl. He has scant experience but possesses the juice to surprise, even if he needs a year in the weight room.
CBS Sports: B. Long, sleek, surprisingly powerful EDGE. Pad level is incredibly high, so if he doesn’t win with his length, his power is sapped. Swim and swipe move are there. Has some bend too. Has to add more sand in his pants at the NFL level. Works hard against the run. The flashes are impressive. Just raw.
ESPN: The Bears traded back into the draft to get back the pick they had sent to Buffalo in March for center Ryan Bates, in the process giving up a 2025 fourth-round selection to bring in an edge rusher. They had a lot of conviction about Booker, who declared early for the draft, after zeroing in on the D-end last fall and watching him excel against the draft's top offensive tackles at the Senior Bowl. Booker played in 12 games in 2023, totaling a career-best eight sacks, 12 tackles for loss and forced two fumbles, but only had one start. Chicago was enamored with his high-pressure rate (12.1, 2nd in the Big 12) and the fact that he's only 21 years old with more time to grow into his body as a natural 4-3 defensive end despite playing the majority of his snaps at outside linebacker in college.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He balls up his fruit by the foot and eats it all at once.

2024.05.11 01:44 athelliaa Current Sophomore @ UPenn
Hi guys -
I am a student at the University of Pennsylvania double majoring in PPE (basically 4 majors in one) and Criminology. I have a 3.45 GPA right now and if I got straight A's by the end of my junior year I can raise it to a 3.6, but most likely I will end up with a high 3.5. I come from a single, teenage mother household and from a very low income area so honestly the jump from high school to college was hard, especially with my social anxiety which has led to such a mediocre GPA ... not to mention that classes here are just hard. I know that if I study very intensively I can get a 170+ on the LSAT. I am the president of an art/wellness club here on campus and have a work study job. I have lots of anxiety about what schools I should make my targets and reaches. I like Penn and would be happy to do law school here, but have other schools I am interested in too (NYU//east-coast area). I'm looking for advice surrounding how to improve my future application to law schools, and also more information of how law schools will view a first generation, lower GPA but hopefully high LSAT from an Ivy League university? Furthermore, I honestly am very uninformed about this process and would appreciate any and all advice.

Everyone Can Like Christmas A Lot
In the heart of Whoville, Christmas is a tapestry woven with whimsy and tradition, blending the fantastical with the time-honored. Streets adorned with Victorian-inspired decor, where garlands of holly and ivy intertwine with handmade paper ornaments, create a scene straight out of a cherished storybook. The air is filled with the aroma of roasted goose and plum pudding, evoking memories of old-fashioned feasts shared by generations past. Gathered around crackling fires and pianos, Whos sing carols that echo through the cobblestone lanes, their voices carrying the timeless melodies of "Silent Night" and "The First Noel." Handcrafted gifts, lovingly made and exchanged, embody the spirit of giving and gratitude. And amidst the laughter and joy, the true magic of Who Christmas shines brightest—a celebration of community, compassion, and the enduring warmth of cherished traditions.
A delightful concept inspired by the whimsical world of Whoville from Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" In Whoville, Christmas is celebrated with unique traditions and customs that embody the true spirit of the holiday. Here's a glimpse into a "Who Christmas" in traditional Whoville style:
- Decorations:
- Whimsical, colorful decorations adorn every corner of Whoville, from intricate paper snowflakes to twinkling lights shaped like candy canes and Whos.
- Whoville trees are quirky and crooked, decorated with bright baubles, ribbons, and tinsel that defy gravity.
- Every house is a masterpiece of creative decor, with roofs adorned with wreaths made of candy, popcorn strands, and gingerbread men.
- Feast:
- The Whos gather for a festive feast featuring roast beast (a Who delicacy), Whobilation pudding, and mountains of colorful sweets like Who-hash and Who-pudding.
- The feast is a time for sharing stories, laughter, and gratitude, with each Who bringing a special dish to contribute to the communal table.
- Gift-Giving:
- Instead of extravagant gifts, the Whos exchange thoughtful presents that reflect their appreciation for one another.
- Homemade gifts, like knitted scarves, painted rocks, and handcrafted ornaments, are cherished as tokens of love and friendship.
- Singing and Merriment:
- Caroling is a cherished tradition in Whoville, with the Whos singing joyful tunes like "Welcome Christmas" and "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" with boundless enthusiasm.
- Musical instruments made from household items, such as jingle bells fashioned from spoons and drums made from pots and pans, add to the festive cacophony.
- Community Spirit:
- The true essence of Who Christmas lies in the spirit of togetherness and generosity. Whos come together to help those in need, spreading kindness and goodwill throughout Whoville.
- The Grinch's heartwarming transformation from a holiday cynic to a celebrant of Christmas embodies the message of forgiveness, love, and redemption.
- Whoville Traditions:
- The lighting of the giant Who Christmas tree in the town square is a grand event, accompanied by a spectacle of fireworks and joyous cheers from Whos of all ages.
- The Mayor of Whoville leads the Whobilation ceremony, where the Whos join hands and sing their hearts out, embracing the joy of the season.
In Whoville, Christmas is not just about presents and decorations; it's a time to celebrate the bonds of family and community, the magic of kindness, and the joy of being together. Who Christmas captures the essence of the holiday in a uniquely whimsical and heartwarming way.
Old Traditional Styles Too
Adding an old traditional Christmas vibe to the "Who Christmas" celebration in Whoville can create a charming blend of nostalgic customs and whimsical festivities. Here's how you might incorporate elements of an old-fashioned Christmas into the vibrant world of Whoville:
- Victorian-Inspired Decor:
- Whoville homes are adorned with classic Victorian decorations like garlands of holly and ivy, handmade paper ornaments, and flickering candles in brass holders.
- Instead of bright colors, the decor features rich reds, greens, golds, and deep blues, evoking a sense of warmth and nostalgia.
- Festive Feast with a Vintage Twist:
- The Whos enjoy a feast reminiscent of a Victorian Christmas dinner, featuring roasted goose, plum pudding with brandy sauce, mince pies, and mulled wine.
- Tables are set with heirloom china, silverware, and linen napkins embroidered with festive motifs.
- Traditional Carol Singing:
- Whos gather around the piano or a crackling fireplace to sing timeless Christmas carols such as "Silent Night," "O Holy Night," and "The First Noel."
- Handheld instruments like wooden flutes, tambourines, and harmonicas add a rustic charm to the musical performances.
- Homemade Gifts and Crafts:
- In keeping with old traditions, Whos exchange handcrafted gifts such as knitted scarves, embroidered handkerchiefs, wooden toys, and homemade jams and preserves.
- Children delight in making paper snowflakes, gingerbread houses, and cornhusk dolls as thoughtful gifts for family and friends.
- Charitable Giving and Community Support:
- Whoville's generosity shines during the holiday season as Whos participate in charitable acts such as donating food and gifts to those in need, volunteering at shelters, and organizing charity events.
- The spirit of giving and compassion is woven into the fabric of Who Christmas, reflecting the values of kindness and goodwill.
- Time-Honored Traditions:
- The lighting of the town's Christmas tree is a cherished tradition, where Whos gather to sing carols, share stories, and enjoy roasted chestnuts and hot cider.
- Festive parades featuring homemade floats, carolers, and dancers add to the old-world charm of the holiday celebrations in Whoville.
By blending the whimsy of Whoville with the timeless traditions of an old-fashioned Christmas, the Who Christmas celebration becomes a magical journey through the past, celebrating the beauty of heritage, community, and the spirit of the season.
