2024.05.16 17:13 TideRuglia Marvelsnapcomp Card of the Week: Cyclops

Sorry for the very long delay. Life has been hectic and I haven't always been in the mood to write and when I do, I want to make sure the analysis is op to snuff. So here's our continuation on card discussions -

Card of the Week: Cyclops

Card stats and text
Name: Cyclops
When powered up by High Evolutionary –
Name: (HE) Cyclops
Card of the Week has analyzed 3 of the ’97 X-Men up to this point. So following the same trajectory, a long awaited update and analysis this time on the beloved field commander of the team – Cyclops. Cyclops is a bit different than the other cards we’ve previously looked at because he actually has two forms – an abilitless form and a powered up form that he only receives when High Evolutionary is added to your deck. This is a trait he shares with 6 other cards in the game, but Cyke is the first one we are taking a look at. How does Scott fare compare to his other colleagues?

Mechanically speaking, what are the card's distinctive strengths and weaknesses?

It probably isn’t even worth much of a discussion as you would think to talk about basic Cyclops. He’s a vanilla 3-4 and sets the base line of what you’d expect for a 3 cost card to perform. It is worth pointing out that of all the cost to expected power ratios, 3 costs have the worst at just x1.33 times versus every other cost. So on an energy efficiency basis, 3 cost par value cards are pretty terrible to begin with. Nowadays, it’s probably even more underpowered as there is a growing trend of “3-5 is the new 3-4”. There is definitely some element of truth to that given most of the new 3-5s, even if they are specific to one particular archetype (such as Black Swan), often times don’t have an ability that actively hurts you. So base Cyclops still being 3-4 makes him more or less unplayable as there is always a better option. Surprisingly, this wasn’t always the case. I definitely remember roughly a year ago when people were still using basic Cyclops in decks such as Patriot where he represented an ability to go tall. You definitely don’t see that in modern SNAP; partially due to power creep and partially due to new cards introducing new abilities that change the base line.
HE Cyke though is where we can actually have some discussion regarding strengths and weaknesses. Because instead of it being all bad, HE Cyke is actually largely good. In fact, of the 7 HE modified cards, Cyke is probably amongst the strongest, in the running for probably THE best HE card. Some basics first to get out of the way. To use this version of Cyclops, you must dedicate one of your card slots to adding High Evolutionary to your deck. Hence why this version is often denoted with HE in the front. Once you do so, Cyclops will change to this modified version (or “evolved”), where he gains a new, power passive ability.
HE Cyke’s strength is two-fold. The first is his theoretical stat line. Yes, his base is still the crummy 3-4. But assuming you can proc his ability every turn and you play him as soon as possible, HE Cyke is a 3-10. That’s obviously very good. Remember how Bishop last week required a ton of cards to be played AND needing to be played early to get there? Cyke does that relatively effortlessly. You just need to play him, then float at least 1 Energy a turn to benefit. His second strength is how he is able to synergize with a lot of cards that share similar archetypes. There is the HE toxic line of course, where you play a lot of negative debuffs to cheat out a cheap Abomination while nerfing the power of your opponent’s field, but likewise, Scott is excellent with cards that want to float since you can then make 1 point of energy do a ton of work. If you play Sunspot, HE Misty Knight and have HE Hulk, that 1 point of unspent energy adds an additional 4 power on top of Cyclops’ own -2 debuff. So in contrast to his abilitless form, HE Cyke actually feels like a team leader in that he is able to slot into and work with a lot of cards. Due to his continuing threat of slapping -1s once he is played, he’s also ends up working great in lane control decks as he actively discourages your opponent from competing with his theoretical power.
As far as weaknesses go, HE Cyclops has a few. The first being one that he shares with all HE cards, which is the need to slot HE into the deck. HE is what veteran card players refer to as “a garnet”. In simple terms, this means he is a card you include due to a combo or enabling some sort of play but feels terrible when you actually draw him. You never want to draw HE because HE himself is an ability-less 4-4. Yes, he doesn’t even hit par. His “ability” is powering up the other cards, so as such when draw, he does nothing. Losing one of your deck slots to put in a card that does zilch when you pick it up is obviously terrible. To mitigate, you might consider playing multiple HE powered cards so that he feels less egregious. And to his credit as noted, Cyclops works with a good number them, so it doesn’t always feel as oppressive as you’re making HE enhance multiple cards usually alongside Scott himself.
HE Cyke’s second weakness is that he is limited by his window and loses effectiveness if he is the only card that takes advantage of float. If you play Cyke late (like Turn 5), that diminishes the amount damage he is able to do. So in that regard, he wants to come on to the field ASAP. But worse yet, like other cards that operate with float, the later you draw and play him, the worse it feels to actively have float. Imagine a scenario, where the only card that can take advantage of float you end up playing is Scott. In this scenario, Cyke may “feel” like a 3-10. But if you are actively sacrificing 1 energy for him, is he really? It would probably be more accurate to say in this case, he is a 6-10. That doesn’t seem so impressive anymore now, does it? The reason why we usually discount this is because you often have many of the other play makers already on field (or in HE Hulk’s case, in hand). When your 1 point of float is adding to 4-5 different cards, the float doesn’t feel bad. But when your float is only powering up 1 card, then it feels grossly inefficient and Scott is unfortunately a victim of this. In short, Scott’s effectiveness also depends on your other float absorbers. You should not expect him to perform any last minute miracle turnarounds.

Where does the card fit in the metagame (past or present)? What archetypes should it work with?

Cyclops has had a pretty interesting run within the game’s meta. Before HE came around, his ability-less form was still used in certain decks (Patriot / Surfer) as a means to build tall in one lane. He was, at the time, pretty much the only 3 cost that could put out decent power with little set up. Even though there were other options within that field, power creep was lower a year ago so base Cyke still saw some use in selective cases.
HE’s release was great for Scott in general. Sure, it basically killed off his base form, but his evolved form is very strong and possibly the strongest HE card in the game. It turned him from a card that was going to die eventually to power creeping to a very often picked inclusion in certain achetypes – sometimes Best-in-Slot (BiS) for your deck if you’re playing something like She-naut or Toxic HE. You still see him today hanging out with other folks that make up those decks – Sunspot, Magik, HE Hulk – and he’s gained some new friends as he remains a staple on those lists. And while these decks are not currently being on top of the meta-lists, it’s always something to keep in mind as you play.

Which cards have noteworthy interactions with it?

Cyclops has a decent number of cards that he can combo off of, which has helped Scott stay relevant even in today’s landscape:

What cards or strategies counter it? Are there other downsides to keep in mind?

Ability-less Cyclops doesn’t need much of a counter because he’s typically out-stated and power crept in today’s landscape. If your opponent plays ability-less Cyclops, you know he/she is probably early in their SNAP career and are probably running some old Patriot or Surfer variant. In which case, counters to those decks typically work.
HE Cyke is another story and the main meat of this section for obvious reasons. Unlike his base version, here, there’s an actual ability with actual threat behind it. So if you don’t check it, it typically means giving up the lane since Scott can just stack a bunch of -1 Power effects onto your board. The key to dealing with HE Cyke if you don’t carry the typical tech cards is to keep in mind his float efficiency. Decks with HE will typically want float and play other float synergistic cards such as Sunspot. If you can eliminate those cards from play or use, then that will weaken HE Cyke as well. Having 1 float power up HE Cyke, HE MK and Sunspot means your opponent gets a lot of mileage but being energy inefficient. It is a completely different story if he’s giving up 1 energy just to add 2x -1 Power. For this reason, some more unusual counters include stuff like Elektra and Killmonger who can snipe out HE Cyke’s early supports.
Another tactic you can try is to forcing your opponent into not having any float at all. This is typically harder to do because there aren’t many ways to mess with your opponent’s costs. You might be tempted to play Mobius but most HE Cyclops’ decks won’t run stuff like Sera. And now that Zabu has basically been neutered, there’s even less reason for them to carry cost discounters. Iceman can work but is typically too random and you have no way of knowing what it hit. The Bounce variants that can replay him are going to be best for this since you can then slap a bunch of +1 cost modifiers, forcing the HE Cyke player into position where he is less likely to have float.
You can also choose to avoid playing in HE Cyke’s lane entirely. Indeed, HE Cyke’s ability only works if there are other cards in the lane. Specifically – he only gets full value if you have TWO cards on YOUR side of the lane. If you don’t have other cards there, then he’s fundamentally no different than his vanilla form. For this reason, the Goblins, White Widow and Viper can be good soft counters. Viper especially can be mean since you end up throwing back a debuffed card back to your opponent’s board. This isn’t always an option though due to the location effects but something to keep in mind.
If you do have his checks, then you’re in a good position. HE Cyke gets dumpstered pretty hard by certain tech cards – most notably Luke Cage. Now that Cage is back in his old form (albeit +1 cost, +2 power), he’s the premier choice for countering toxic debuff strategies. HE Cyke is of course no exception to this rule. Simply play him on a late turn and undo a bunch of your opponent’s work. If they are floating on 5 in preparation of playing a big boi like HE Hulk or Infinaut and She-Hulk, slapping Luke down undoes the previous 2 turns of work and puts you into position of nailing their big boi too. Otherwise, both Shadow King and Valkyrie deserve honorable mentions but are not as good as Luke. SK resets all the previous’ turns power debuffs, which can be big but you’ll still be at the mercy of the current round’s effect. Valkyrie is similar except she will set everything to 3 power. If you have a way to break parity with at least +3 power, then you’re in a good position to take the lane.
Being 3 cost means Cyke is also vulnerable to Magneto. But Magneto doesn’t really counter Scott because by the time old Magnetman hits the field, Cyke’s effect would have already proc’d twice. Sure, you can then move him to another location but by then the damage is done. There are times when Magneto can be the game winner (such as an opponent having a weak lane and another lane that has been Flooded and they are using Cyke + Storm to hold it), but like the locations, he’s definitely more situational.

What other cards may serve a similar role, for either replacement or redundancy?

From the HE family, HE Cyke’s closest comparison is his 4 cost companion HE Thing. Both cards slam -1 power effects to different cards in the lane. However, in Ben’s case, he’s an On Reveal and thus only triggers once and doesn’t scale with float. Otherwise, HE Misty Knight is also similar AND synergistic. In this case, you add +1 power for every additional point of float, just like how HE Cyke adds 2x -1 Power debuffs. This +1 is random though so care must be placed into deciding what you’re playing since the more cards there are, the extra float can hit cards you don’t really want.
Apart from the HE family of cards, HE Cyke shares similar abilities as Man-Thing. Both cards represent an establisher that aims to hold the lane by applying debuffs to other cards in the lane. Both cards aim to hit your opponent’s cards with a max of -8 power. The main difference here is that Man-Thing only hits cards that cost 1-3, whereas Scott can hit any card as long as you give him float. Man-Thing is also Ongoing so certain soft counters that work against Scott don’t work on Man-Thing.

Conclusion

Cyclops has come a long way. He went from being an ability-less, identity-less generic 3 cost to now a staple consideration in one of the game’s more competitive archetypes. Not bad for the field commander.
What are your best Cyclops plays?
What has been Cyclops’ best deck?
Did I miss anything in my assessment?
Let's discuss in the comments.

Public speaking is intimidating for many people. If you'd like to improve your public speaking skills, or just to make new friends, you should check out our club's open house. Good Evening Toastmasters is meeting tonight at 6:00 pm in room 2A of the Monroe County Public Library. We are not a cult.
In Toastmasters, we practice public speaking every Thursday at the library. In a typical meeting, we'll have two speakers give a prepared 5 - 7 minute speech about any subject they want. I've heard speeches about organizing an art print exchange, traveling to Tokyo, the different types of chili across the US, and online password security. You'll never know what you're gonna get. We also open the floor to our other members to give short, one to two minute improvised speeches on a random topic. If you come as a guest, you're welcome to participate in our improvised speeches as well, but it's optional. :)
My favorite part of our club is the community. We have a diverse range of ages and nationalities among our members, and I've made a lot of great friends through our club. Before I joined Toastmasters, I didn't have a lot of friends in town. A year+ in, I now have several! It's made a big difference in my life, both professionally and socially.
It's free to attend as a guest, and you can visit as a guest as many times as you'd like. If you'd like to be a member, it costs $10 a month, an additional $1 a month in club fees, and a one-time cost of $20 to enroll in our online education program. Dues are due twice a year.
If you're interested in our club but can't make our open house, you can learn about our future meeting locations on Facebook. We meet every Thursday at 6:00 pm at the library, but the meeting room isn't always the same. If you have any questions, feel free to comment or DM me. Hope to see you soon!

2024.05.16 17:10 zepporamone [For Sale] New Pull: Alice Cooper, Arctic Monkeys, Karen Dalton, Father John Misty, Flamin' Groovies, Francoise Hardy, Howlin' Wolf (Cancelled Press), Jellyfish, Kreator (Signed), Pixies, Promo-Only Lou Reed Flexi, U-Roy, Crown Jewels Com

Hi,
More new stuff, well below Discogs. Still digging through a large buy and trying to make some floor space. Everything ships from Boston/Cambridge and is a flat $5 to CONUS no matter how much you order. All vinyl is visually graded (media/sleeve) unless otherwise noted. Next mail run happens tomorrow (Friday, May 17th). Pickup available in Cambridge, MA if you're local. If you're interested in anything, please contact me via CHAT ONLY, please. No rainchecks, holds, etc.
Alice Cooper Killer (Red/Black) (VG+/VG+) Vinyl is being graded conservatively and is very clean. Sleeve has a bit of wear, particularly along the edges and corners but it's largely very clean. $23
Arctic Monkeys AM (Mispress) (VG+/VG+) Y'know how there was that mispressed version of AM that slipped out a year or so back with two Side Bs? Well, this mispress has two Side As. The correct labels are on both sides but the matrix on each reads Side A and, well, that's what you get. I actually also have copies of the mispress with Side B on both so, y'know, if you'd like to combine those two mispresses, you'll have a complete version of the album (...) I have two copies of this double A-side. The vinyl on both is VG+. One of the sleeves, however, has a hype sticker affixed directly to the sleeve, so I'm knocking that one down to VG. VG sleeved version is $15. VG+ sleeved version is $20. If you'd like to combine either of these with a VG+/VG+ version of the double B-side version, I'll do it for $40 shipped.
Karen Dalton In My Own Time (CleaBlack Swirl) (NM/VG+) Vinyl is near pristine. Jacket has minimal shelfwear. $30
Father John Misty I Love You, Honeybear (Tricolored, Diorama) (VG/VG) So, this is the original release featuring the diorama fold-out (no midi-player with this version and this one doesn't include the cassette) on tricolored vinyl. The sleeve is largely sharp and I'm grading it somewhat conservatively. Knocking it down because there's a bit of wear along the bottom edge and a teeny, tiny little ding/split (1cm) on the top. As was common with this release, however, the vinyl has a strong warp. They were originally packaged inside the sleeve the weight of the diorama just bowled them. It was a common enough issue that they later re-released this version with the platters outside the sleeve. I gave it a test and it did play through but my needle was certainly riding the waves. If someone wants to take the time to flattened those platters, you'll have a really nice copy. $25
Flamin' Groovies Shake Some Action (180G) (VG/VG+) Grading this one conservatively. Plays and looks much closer to VG+ but there are a few light hairlines and a couple of divots from manufacturing on both sides. When played, there's perhaps a brief, audible whoosh or drop-out in those spots but nothing ever dominates the music or skips. Sleeve is sharp. Classic, classic album at a low price. $12
Francoise Hardy Tous Les Garcons Et Les Filles (LITA) (VG/VG+) Grading very conservatively. Vinyl would be NM if not for a scuff toward the end of B1/beginning of B2 that creates a bit of noise (but nothing that dominates the music) for about 30 seconds. Otherwise a beautiful copy. Obi included. I also have copies of other Hardy LPs in stock if you check my recent posts. $17
Howlin' Wolf His Greatest Sides Volume 1 (Starburst, Cancelled Edition) So, this one is almost one of a kind. It's an advance copy (essentially used as a test pressing) of what was going to be an exclusive variant of His Greatest Sides Vol. 1 on starburst vinyl for an indie retailer. There were a number of issues with the press, however, and the entire run was cancelled. This is one of a handful that exist. There are a variety of little issues that I noticed upon testing it - the run-in to A1 shoots the needle about halfway across the track, there are odd bits of crackle or noise in the mix, etc. It's got a share of defects but largely plays through without those issues dominating the music (except, y'know, that first track that ultimately starts about halfway in. Cute little collectable. $20
Jellyfish Live At Bogart's (Blue, etched) (VG/VG+) Most of the vinyl looks great but there are a few spots with issues. There's a mechanical scuff on the exact same spot on sides C & D. It runs across the entirety of the first track and into the second on both sides. It looks bad and I assumed it would cause a skip but, upon testing, it just produces some noise and the occasional pop. There's also another scuff on Side D running from tracks 1-3. It's lighter but does produce a bit of noise. Jacket is largely clean but has a half-inch seam split. $22
Kreator Hate Uber Alles (Transparent Red, SIGNED) (VG+/VG+) So, I don't think the vinyl has ever actually been played. It's very clean. The sleeve has been signed by the members of the band (two in black sharpie, two in silver sharpie). Super nice copy. $50
Pixies Doolittle (Bronze/Green Swirl) (VG/VG+) A Side is very clean. B side has a number of scuffs that produces varying degrees of noise (but no skips). There's a faint hairline or two running the length of the side that don't produce much in the way of noise. There's also, however, a bad scratch that affects bits of the last three tracks (the worst of it on Gouge Away). Those sections have some routine noise, pops, etc. It doesn't overpower the music but it's noticeable. Sleeve stored in shrink. $30
Lou Reed I'm Waiting For The Man (May 1965 Demo) (Yellow, Promo-Only Flexidisc) (NM/Generic) Unplayed flexi comes complete with letter from the label. $7.50
U-Roy Version Galore (G+/G+) Here's a well-loved copy of U-Roy's Version Galore. I'm grading a little conservatively but, y'know, it's an old Treasure Isle press that was never going to be the quietest thing even when it was brand new - and it certainly isn't brand new anymore. There's a little bed of noise throughout and sections that have some pops and clicks (first 30 seconds of A1 and B1 for example), a few scuffs and hairlines, one or two scratches that are a bit worse. Nothing causes a skip but you're going to get the occasional snap, crackle, and pop. Cover is all in tact and the art looks pretty good but there are warn edges, corners, bit of scuffing, etc. If you like your reggae with a bit of a warm, fire-side ambiance, you could do a lot worse than this classic at $10.
Various Crown Jewels Vol. 1 (Fool's Gold) (VG+/VG+) Solid label comp from Big Crown featuring Lee Fields, Lady Wray, El Michels Affair, etc. $7.50

Excelsior Andriel and his staff move to the debark site on the blade where they will walk in space over to the Elo Eloahim. Ambassador Lucentel is awaiting the arrival of the group from the blade. He is speaking with the commander of his vessel as they look outside at the blade sitting 100 yards away.
Commander, what do you make of this vessel, the blade? Ambassador, I am aware of this design. It is manifest and therefore has many exotic accoutrements and capabilities. It has a trans-time drive system and many highly accurate weapons.
The commander pauses. Does it pose a threat to the Elo Eloahim, commander? Lucent Tell asks. As long as we are in the Aetherium domain, it poses no threat.
If it were to transpose into the Matterverse, it would be potentially lethal to us. The commander and Lucentel can see Excelsior Andriel and a group of Aetherians walking in space toward the Elo Eloahim.
Senator, I have Jason Anderson on the phone. Line one. You want to take it? Asked his assistant. Yes, thank you, Barks the senator. Jason, have you lost your fucking mind? Why are you talking to reporters? Well, if you must know, I am concerned about the effects of the Superlight device, and I think people should be aware. Besides, Hilliard fired me, so I have no allegiance, Jason adds.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. A bunch of babies. You people are so dramatic. Where the fuck is Hilliard? We have looked everywhere, and not a sign of him or his team, the senator says. I don't know senator, but I did get a call from him this morning early.
Where was the call from? Did you look? Asks Senator Abramson. Yes, I looked, and it was listed as caller unknown. He has gone into hiding and is using a burner or a call blocker.
Get me that phone, Jason. I can get someone at NSA to trace it back. Maybe we can get a lead.
Okay, senator, I can send it down express. It will be there tomorrow. You know, Jason, if you want that device in good hands, we have to find Hilliard. The senator huffs. I understand, Senator, Jason says. Send me that phone, and I will talk to you in a couple of days. The senator hangs up.
Airman Johnson has collected Brad, Nancy, and Walter, escorting them to the mess hall. As they enter, they see Captain Carpenter and two men at a table. They stand and greet. Barbara introduces everyone. Brad, Nancy, Walter, I would like you to meet Steve Ruddin and Oscar Tillman.
These guys are contractors to the Space Force Deep Black Division, the same guys that developed the TR-3 Black Manta you all flew on. They work on the infamous 17th floor, the bottom floor, and safest floor in the base. An intruder would have to navigate down through 16 floors through tight security to reach this floor and its secret projects.
These guys are going to help you set up your device. I have approved this as a Halo-class project, which means no spending caps. So, whatever you need, just ask, and it will be provided to you.
If the New Empire is interested in this thing, then we all are interested in it. Nancy, Walter, I know you may need some briefing to get you fully up to speed. Maybe Brad can fill you in later.
After lunch, I am going to have Steve and Oscar give you the 10-cent tour. Well, some of the toys they have down there cost a significant portion of the U.S. budget, off-record budget, Barbara says. We have been talking with these greys for years.
The Air Force prior to us. We never see the tall greys, always the little ones. That tells you something right there.
Your little black box has them freaking out, so we need to know why, and how to leverage from it. My job here is to oversee development of space technologies. The greys are so far technologically ahead of us. It would take thousands of years for us to discover half of that stuff. We have asked them to help us for years, and they have given us an old depleted ship, and some elements that are not found on Earth, but that's about it. Even their old scout ships are impossible to reverse-engineer.
We have been able to take a few components and use them. Back in the 50s, many of the big tech breakthroughs were reversed grey tech. They seem to be a race of thinkers and scientists.
They use some kind of black magic. I just call it that. They call it manifest. They are able to tell the quantum to build a spaceship, and the thing just 3D prints itself into existence. That's why their tech is so hard to back-engineer. There are no signs of any manufacturing, it’s like a living metallic body, no seams, rivets, nothing.
Just a wholly formed organic ship. Which brings me to the whole point of this meeting. If the superlight is an economic or ideological threat to the greys and their kind, we have a currency to trade in.
I am certain they could build one in a minute, that's not the issue. They don't want us to have it. It is an existential threat to their economy and how they profit from us as a species.
I have been thinking, since we were on that ship with the big grey Andriel, that the human race, and most likely many others, are creations, avatars, if you will made by the beings you are seeing with the superlight. It's all mind-melting information, but we need to learn more about these things, and how they affect our planet, and what threats they pose. You now have all the resources you need at your disposal.
So, let's get some answers in fast. Our very survival could depend on it. Captain Carpenter concludes.
The news of the superlight has been seen around the world. The news media have been featuring non-stop coverage of the story. Reporters have probed the White House, the Russians, the Chinese, the Vatican, just about every world leader for comment and analysis. U.S. President Andrew Walton Grant has fielded calls all day from far-flung world leaders.
His chief of staff Ben Chambers is hovering nearby. The president is on a video call with Russian President Nikolai Brezhnev. President Grant, I am very concerned that the U.S. has such a powerful weapon.
I have conferred with the Council on International Emergency Affairs, and they are quite concerned with the idea of this powerful device being in the hands of one country. Therefore, we demand in all manner possible that the United States bring this device to the Council, that we might understand this dangerous invention better. Sir, with all due respect.
Oh no, Grant thinks under his breath. When they start in with the all due respect bullshit, it means there is actually no respect. Grant mutes the call and speaks into his chief of staff's ear.
Do we even know where this fucking thing is? Chambers says, no sir, not really. Just stall him so we can figure this all out. Grant takes the mute off.
Nikolai, I am going to need some time to sift through this situation. As you know, this device we are talking about is owned and developed by a private tech company, and I will need their cooperation. The U.S. government can't just take it away, not without a court battle.
I am sure we can find a solution that benefits all parties. Thank you, Mr. President, Brezhnev says, adding, please notify us when possible regarding the whereabouts of the device. I have been briefed on the situation and know that it is in hiding somewhere, in the southwest part of your country.
Believe me, Mr. President, I will be able to tell you with high accuracy where the device is in a day or so. Thank you, Mr. Brezhnev, I look forward to our next call.
Benton, get the National Security Director and a couple Joint Chiefs, and Andy Newhall, Secretary of Defense up here, ASAP.
We need a plan, the whole flippin' world is pissed off at us right now. Oh, and who was that senator in those news reports you showed me? The President's asks. Senator Arthur Abramson, Democrat from Massachusetts, says the Chief of Staff.
Fine, let's get them all up here so we can sort this thing out, says President Grant.
The Grand Hall of the Elo Eloahim is opulent, jewel-like, rows of beautiful tables with hundreds of leaders and diplomats standing and seated. A large choir is singing on a grand stage.
Thirty individuals are creating a sound so colorful and emotional that it brings intense pleasure to the listener. No rhythm, just a continuous wave of sound, like a chorus of Angels. Ambassador Lucentel walks into the ballroom, accompanied by Excelsior Andriel and his entourage.
Everyone in the room stands, and the music gets louder and more state-like in texture. The group makes their way to the VIP table at the head of the room. Lucentel motions for everyone to be seated.
He speaks to the gathering, be not afraid, power and glory to the one. Greetings and peace to all those who are gathered here now. I am delighted to introduce Excelsior Andriel, Commander of the Guardian and Excelsior of the New Empire.
Boos and moans can be heard in the crowd. I am certain a number of you have concerns regarding the legitimacy of the New Empire, but must I remind you that it was and is the One that embraces this division in our society. We must embrace it as well.
Excelsior, please a few words. Thank you, be not afraid. Power and glory unto the One.
The two small greys that were sent to Earth to meet Barbara. Brad and Bill are trying different codes on an outside hatch at the bottom of the Elo Eloahim.
They are using a small pad to break in. The hatch suddenly flips open, and the little greys enter the giant ship. Down on these lower levels, it is not so jewel-like, very plain, just utilitarian.
They find a room with dozens of video monitors. They wave the pad in front of the video screens. Okay, let's go, one of them says.
They quickly leave the way they came in. A half-mile above on the command bridge of the Elo Eloahim, an officer, sees something on his monitor. It is the two greys walking into the power room down below.
Commander, take a look at this. The commander steps over and looks at the video screen. What is in that area? The commander asks.
That is a distribution node for the converters. Could the converters be disabled from that location? The commander ponders. I don't think so, commander.
However, the software that drives the matter converter is partially accessible from there. The commander calls out. Commander on duty to Ambassador Lucientel.
Commander, this is not a good time right now. The ambassador says, speaking quietly. I am sorry, ambassador, but we have had an intrusion.
Two New Empire operatives, dressed in maintenance robes, entered a very sensitive area of the ship. This could have the potential of putting us at a great disadvantage. Thank you, commander. Glory to the One. Commander, make urgent plans to return to Aetheria. Top speed.
It shall be so, ambassador. The sound of the old barge, moving up to speed, can be heard in the ballroom. The choir sing louder in order to be heard above the engine noise.
Excelsior Andriel leans to Ambassador Lucientel and says, so this is all an elaborate kidnapping scheme, ambassador. The ambassador chuckles, no, not at all Excelsior, but it was a real chance to collaborate. But your operatives broke into a sensitive part of the ship, and we feel it prudent to return to Aetheria.
Don't worry. I will provide you and your party a shuttle to return to your vessel. It has to be before we cross the border net, as I am sure you are aware. Go now. My staff will escort you to the hangar deck, snaps Lucentel The blade is now pulled alongside the Elo Eloahim and is pacing it.
Andriel and his group have boarded the shuttle and are exiting the Elo Eloahim. They can see a bright red net just ahead of them. The border net, only authorized Aetherians can cross over it into Old Dominion territory.

2024.05.16 17:09 Unlikely_Average2118 Audio upgrade 3 gen tacoma

Guys and gals, I've added subs to my 17 Tacoma. It has been a process of 2 years trying to get these things to sound great. Bottom line, the only thing they seem to do great is a kick drum. I used to be pretty well versed on this stuff 20 years ago and now my oldest daughter is about to start driving and I'm trying to give her something that sounds good as a daily driver. What I have installed:
Kenwood Excelon DMX 809S. 2 Kicker comp RT 4 ohm DVC subs (48CWRT104). Kicker 800:1 amp (CXA800:1). Sealed, dual enclosure box advertising .75 cubic ft. per enclosure. Crutchfield's best wiring kit to extend amp warranty.
Amp tuning: crossover set to 0. Bass boost 0. Gain set to ear as setting it by volt meter to a 50 hz signal didn't sound as good.
HU tuning: sub crossover is at 40 hz with -12 slope, gain at 0. No effects. 13 band Equalizer is slight smiley face, lows slightly raised and highs slightly raised and mid range slightly dropped.
Subs are wired parallel to 1 ohm when connected to amp.
Spotify app with pixel 7 phone on Verizon. Spotify's equalizer is disabled. Streaming set to highest quality.
I can tell while streaming music and have weaker signal there's a slight drop in quality. I'm still playing with Hu and amp tuning. Even with downloaded songs, some songs just sound like crap. Am I wrong to think a sealed box just can't play old school rap efficiently?
I plan to upgrade door speakers in the future but I really want the best sound out of the subs first. Am I in the ballpark for tuning this setup correctly? Do y'all have some pointers that I could try? I'm trying to get the best of both worlds of the music we like (country, rock, some rap)
Then again maybe it's the vehicle distorting what I'm hearing. Backseat is unbearable when turned up. Maybe I'm just getting old and my ears are crap. Thanks!

2024.05.16 17:08 SeveralFondant9842 How do continue living with somebody who attempted?

I hope the title doesn’t sound offensive.
My brother attempted last week and good thing his girlfriend reached out to us in time asking us to check on him since he sent her a suicide note. He then proceeded to turn off his cell so no one could reach him.
We checked on him (he has his own room btw) and when we got to him, he was bawling his eyes out and after trying to talk to him, he opened up that he took bleach. We immediately took him to the hospital and they did something to treat him.
We’re really not sure why he attempted but as far as we know, he’s living the life. He’s running for cum laude, He’s got a great family. He’s always gets his way and does not help in the house at all. We don’t even scold him for anything. He’s got an amazing girlfriend as well. We didn’t know what triggered him.
He’s just in his room all the time playing games with his friends and that’s his normal. We are used to it.
Now after the incident, he’s seeing a psych he’s become so cold to us.
We don’t really know how to act around him. We try to encourage him to join us in everything (like eating, going out, etc) but he doesn’t want to and always just goes to his room to play.
How could we help him?

2024.05.16 17:08 aedilheim I cannot pray the Rosary in my household anymore and I'm heartbroken

In advance, thank you for reading (if you do) and forgive me for how long my post is.
To preface, I (18 Y/O) am an unbaptized, nondenominational Christian, who grew up in an informally Christian household. For around half a year now, I’ve expressed interest in joining a denomination and the Catholic Church has always been, for some reason, my first choice, as I felt like exploring your beliefs and precepts would make sense before I explored the (or rather, an) Orthodoxy or any particular Protestant denomination. I felt a very strange, albeit wonderful calling a little while ago to go to Mass. For over a month now, I’ve been going to Mass and seeing such a change in my day-to-day life as I’m renewing my relationship with the Lord. Scripture now lights up whenever I take just a few minutes to explore and meditate upon it. In general, I just FEEL better than before I began this exploration and it seems that although sin will always have a hold on me, I can be at peace recognizing the Lamb's sacrifice for them and praising His power over death.
A little over three weeks ago, ironically right after Mass, I went to work with my mom, a nurse, who was tasked with performing an in-house assessment that day. The lady she assessed came from a devout Polish Catholic family and upon hearing this, my mother graciously asked if I could come in and speak with the lady’s daughter about her faith and such. She generously agreed and after I came inside, we spent an hour discussing the wonders of the Lord working in her life. Not once did she mention the Catholic Church in particular— only nearer to the end she explained to me the Rosary, how it worked, and the various Mysteries meditated upon. She told us to wait a moment, ran swiftly to her room, and returned, gifting me a beautiful rosary she just received in the mail and did not need. I greatly thanked her after we hugged, and my mom and I took leave of their home.
Now is the best time to mention my parents’ reactions to my interest in becoming Catholic. My mother has been most generous and supportive, even though she grew up in the Catholic Church and has left the faith since her youth. She is mostly proud that I'm taking the steps to forge my own spiritual path rather than being complacent in my father's. My father, on the other hand, has been wary and quite reactionary towards it. He and his family grew up Orthodox Presbyterian, although he seldom goes to church himself as he works on the weekends. He also left his initial denomination and for all the time I've been alive, we have only gone to nondenominational churches throughout my youth.
I've received much criticism from him and his family and it's becoming a little too much to bear. He always finds ways to nag about my going to Mass, telling me that other churches are far friendlier and welcoming unlike mine. I told him that Mass is more than just a Eucharistic congregation and unlike most Protestant services, there is a very personal component to it. Just last week, while I was treating them out to lunch, my aunt and cousin reacted to my telling them about my experiences with this long list of complaints about Catholicism-- calling it a cult and instead referring me to Protestant thinkers such as Sproul and the like. Worst of all, when I received my rosary that Sunday, his response, rather than in jubilation like mine, was completely reactive, citing Jn 14:6 as reasoning why praying to Mary is heretical, then hanging up the phone when I stopped responding because I was in tears and could not bear to hear this opposition in light of my own happiness about receiving this gift. Even then, I was optimistic in that every night, I had prayed at least one Mystery and just this past week, have been praying all five Mysteries. I tell you that there is an incredibly meditative aspect in asking the Blessed Mother for her intercession and even during turbulent, stressful times, she has never once forsaken me and I've always been brought peace during prayer.
Last night was the first night I failed to pray at least one Mystery. My dad and I were talking about my conversion. Our conversation digresses into speaking about the intercession of Mary and the saints. I'm explaining my views and in his midst, begin to say a Hail Mary and before I even finished "among women", he tells me to stop and that there will be no praying to Mary in his household. Again, a punch in the gut and tears choked back. I peacefully excused myself, feigning a need to get to stuff, and ran to my room in a melancholy state. I sat at my desk wondering what to do for 2-and-a-half hours. And idiotically, like Raskolnikov, out of guilt knowing very well that what I do in private goes against his will, I turn myself into my father, handing him my rosary and saying that in observation of the Lord's commandments, I will not pray the Rosary anymore. He gives it back and tells me that I can keep it as long as I don't pray to Mary. I was somewhat pleased to hear this, but still, I knew I'd be in bed that night, without the peace that came with praying the Rosary.
Bluntly, I feel terrible this morning. It is as though my world, plans, and personal calling to the Catholic Church have been foiled and in all honesty, I don't even know what to do anymore. I want to please my father but I don't know where the Holy Spirit is guiding me anymore. I haven't much support beyond my mom and it's really starting to hurt.

2024.05.16 17:08 Metacifer Assymetrical boardwipe options in Izzet (Outside of Cyclonic Rift)

I'm building a [[Balmor, Battlemage Captain]] deck (which might be headed by Bria when Bloomburrow releases, but anyway). The game plan is to make a lot of tokens, cast a lot of spells, ping with the likes of [[guttersnipe]] and [[impact tremors]] and swing away with huge token tramplers.
My problem is in some board control options. The deck's main interaction is counters because it is aiming to be an early threat, but I realized I also need a few boardwipes in case I'm fighting someone with a similar strategy. While [[Blasphemous Act]] is a great card, I'd rather not have to wipe out my own board to take care of another and I'm looking for other cards.
[[Cyclonic rift]] is an obvious choice, but I'd like some other options. Anyone have some ideas?

2024.05.16 17:07 DayManIn3D Foam Storage For Larger Minis?

Hey All,
I'm starting to get back into the game and am looking for a better way to transport my minis, mainly the larger ones(Lizard, Rhino, ect) and ones like Agent Venom , gwen/deadpool and Amazing Spiderman that have a lot going on, on them.
I have a tool box with a metal plate and was gluing magnets to the bottom but i don't really have the storage space for the tool box anymore and hate lugging it around. I really only plan carry 10-15 minis with me at a time and want something I can put into a backpack, preferably some sort of case with a foam insert, alot of the ones im seeing look like it will work great for the smallenormal sized minis but looking to solve the issue for the larger ones. Any suggestions?

2024.05.16 17:07 rockstarrockstar When do I call CPS to report?

My mom and stepfather have 3 children at a rented home (ages 4, 11, and 12). I moved out after graduation just a few years ago. When I was living there, we had 2 female non-spayed cats (one was an outside cat) and it was tidy until the end of my senior year because I wasn’t doing chores anymore and was too busy with friends or high school stuff. My mom is an alcoholic and drinks pretty much every single night. Every time I’ve gone over to visit, the house is extremely gross. They have an non-neutered large dog (german shepherd, black lab mix) who they keep in a kennel or cage all day with the exception of 2-3 hours of time in the house and potty breaks in the morning before and after work. They also have another small dog who has free range and another 2 unfixed cats (kittens of one of the cats). The house isn’t just dirty. There are dirty dishes filling the sink and all over the majority of the kitchen counter. The counter and cupboards are full of boxed and microwaveable food (expired and new), including the fridge that’s full of food but it’s a mix of old and new because they don’t clean it out of organize. I went over to pick up my 11 year old sibling a couple of days ago and it was absolutely heartbreaking what they’re living in. The floors are caked in dirt, animal hair, animal pee, and probably animal feces. There is garbage and broken toys or items on the floor. The couch cushions were peed on or eaten by the dog so the couches are just down the bones. There’s are blankets that belong to the children’s beds on them that are covered in cat pee. The entire house smells like animals so strongly that I couldn’t stand 20 minutes in there without getting a headache. The kitchen table is full of garbage and random things, preventing them to eat there. They replaced the stove around early this year because it broke (they never told the rental company because they didn’t want them to come into the house) and it’s been sitting in the living room since then. There are 2 litter boxes for the cats, one being in the hallway and one being in my 12 year old siblings room with one cat who is seperated because he isn’t fixed. He pees everywhere in that room and ruins clothes, bedding, and furniture. There are 2 bathrooms, but the main one is not in use because the only usable things are the toilet and sink. The entire bathroom floor in that one is covered in laundry that is caked in dirt and animal feces and the only walkable area is a small pathway to the toilet. There is a hole in the ceiling above the shower that drips when it rains and it’s becomes a crack that is literally caving in. Instead of my parents calling someone for help, they just avoid it because they don’t want to clean to have someone come in and fix. The other bathroom (the smaller one) is the only one they use because my 12 year old sibling keeps it clean because it’s attached to their room. My parents bedroom is where the 4 year old sleeps (she is not potty trained and has been 4 since February, she wears underwear during the day but has recurrent accidents. She wears pull-ups at night). She sleeps with my parents and it’s been this way since she was born. The entire floor of the master bedroom is covered in clothes and you have to step over cardboard food boxes (honey buns, crème pies) when you walk in to get to the bed. My stepfather eats boxes of these and just throws the wrappers and boxes next to his side of the bed (closest to the door). My 11 year old siblings room is full of toys, their mattress is on the floor because their bed frame broke years ago and my parents said they couldn’t afford a new one. However, their newest purchase is a computer monitor and computer tower (costing over $800 together). They also own a playstation and new iPhones. Both of my parents work full time M-F 8-5, with the exception that my mom has Mondays off. During winter, my stepfather wasn’t working because he works a seasonal job and the house was still in this state. They don’t open the windows or curtains to air it out ever so the kids are just sitting in a dirty house that reeks of cat pee and animals. The only safe thing they have is running cold and hot water. They have food, but it’s mostly easy to make (microwaveable rice/boxed foods, packaged snacks, and canned foods). My 4 year old sibling will go to my stepfathers moms house during the day when they’re at work and enjoys it over there.
I know this was a lot of information but I seriously don’t know what’s considered abuse or neglect and I feel nervous about reporting if it’s not that big of a deal. I’ve tried confronting my mom, but she just blames it on mental illness or her POTS that she was diagnosed with this last year. Help me.

2024.05.16 17:06 QuislingX Games like Killing Floor 2 or Zombie Army 4

Hey! Don't normally post here. I'm looking for fun games to possibly play with friends and have some team dynamic. I really liked Killing floor 2 and was pretty good at it. Very good.
I liked the idea of B4B but I hated a lot of its implementation and balance choices. I really like the gunplay and combat in it though, it was just a lot of bullshit and bad balancing.
I've never really liked HD2, but played it because all my friends were playing it, but I'm starting to hit the point of diminishing returns. Like, it was a 7/10 MAYBE at launch for me, now it's hitting 6. I'm not having a blast, but it's kinda fun, I guess.
Essentially, I'm looking for games like Killing Floor 2 or Team Fortress 2. Liked World War Z but that game is kinda shallow.
Games that don't work for me; I can't get into DRG for some reason. Maybe it's because whoever I'm playing with is really good at the game, so it feels like I'm just standing around while they collect and shoot everything. I also can't get into risk of rain 2 for the exact same reason.
I'm thinking maybe I should pick up Vermintide 2 again? Idk, I kinda wanna shoot things. Again, KF2 and B4B made melee fun for me in my head. I didn't really care for melee in Vermintide 2, and I didn't like that I essentially only had like 12 bullets or arrows or what have you.
So yea. I wanna shoot things, and I kinda like the idea of unique character abilities. I liked Zombie Army 4 more as a single player shooter than as a team based shooter, but I'm open to suggestions. Also, I beat Strange Brigade and LOVED it, it was great with friends but the replayability is kinda limited after that.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

2024.05.16 17:06 Mr_UnOrganized Creating Riddle Gimmick Fight

(Long Text Warning)
*Disclaimer: If you are reading this, and your group is called Shadowmenders, CLICK OFF, I’m talking about you Kyler >~> *
To preface, I am an amateur DM who has been running an Eberron game for about 7 months now, I’m posting this in both DMAcademy and this subreddit because one is knowledgeable on the setting and one is overall DM advice!
Context Summary: My players are going to be venturing into an old hidden underground ruin that ends at an old ancient vault full of magical weapons and items that were used during the Age of Demons. Along the way/halfway through the ruins the party will be fighting cultists who opening a portal too Mabar (Plane of Darkness pretty much) and it will, hopefully, be one of their toughest fights yet. PCs are 4 level 6 characters, and are very familiar and experienced using their characters in combat. Once they reach the vault level, I want it to be guarded by what appears to be a Paladin fully plated in stone, with a greatsword covered in blood and corpses of cultists scattered around. The being will telepathically speak into the players minds and ask them a riddle, he is a celestial being bound to the vault in order to protect the great Paladin, Tira Miron’s, belongings, unless someone worthy of the gear or sent from the Silver Flame itself (the religion) comes to claim it.
The original plan is that this single knight is going to be a tough fight normally, but an extremely tough fight right after the party fought the cultists, seeing that they will be pretty tapped out. Only one of my players speaks celestial, but as a precaution I planned to have a cultist corpse at the entrance clutching a spell scroll in his hand, which would be Comprehend Language.
My issue is the riddle! A big theme of Eberron is “Prophecy” but my players are still first time Eberron players and the Draconic Prophecy hasn’t played a big part story wise so it’s doubtful they would guess “Prophecy” as an answer. I’m trying to come up with riddles that are on topic of “fate” “religion” and “light” and not be so off topic or simple as too “River” as ever riddle seems to have! Do any experienced riddle writers or creative thinkers have ideas as to the riddle asked?
(I thought of the concept of if the party guesses the riddle too easily, instead of preventing the fight, the beings armor begins to break off and his health and AC will be lowered, equally out to like 2-3 riddles. Or if it’s a tough riddle, they will have to shout out the answer as they are fighting and then the fight ends you know? Just some ideas I thought would be cool, seeing how this is there first dungeon delve!)
TL;DR: Party being asked a riddle by powerful celestial knight, want the riddle to have to do with fate, religion or light, otherwise party will have to defeat knight to get into the vault it protects. Struggling on riddle ideas that aren’t too basic or too complex!

2024.05.16 17:06 Accurate-Ask1581 Help with my SAP appeal please! Any tips?

Dear Financial Aid Appeal Committee,
Thank you for this opportunity to explain my disappointing semester as it does not reflect my true character. I faced difficulties during the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters that greatly impacted by academic standing.
In the Fall 2023 semester, I went through an intense family crisis, starting with my grandpa ernan whom I am very close with. He came to live in our home for some time and was very ill and battled with early stages of what we realized was dementia. I found myself taking care of my grandpa while my parents worked as he would have trouble doing things on his own and was sick all the time which was disheartening to see because I would worry, I had to deal with the fact that it was not going to get better and we would have to send him to his home country honduras soon in which we did and he is still sick and stable but not any better as we hoped.
Coping with the sickness and care for my grandpa, Shortly after, my brother, went through a tough time mentally that led him into alcoholism. In which we saw him changing erratically like we never seen before. I found myself growing increasingly sad and worried every day, it was all I could think about and it impacted my psychological well being because I felt hopeless and useless seeing that he refused professional help. I grew even more pressured being that this was my older brother and my parents looked at their younger daughter, me, like I was their only hope because I was in school and trying to get better but this would only make me worse. Being very close to my brother and grandpa, I prioritized supporting and caring for them over getting help for my mental health which resulted in my neglect of my academic responsibilities.
Despite still dealing with my mental health during spring semester i still held my determination to pass my classes with better grades and get off academic probation and prevailed. I take full accountability for my academic decline and I have taken positive steps to ensure my academic success moving forward. I took a learning strategies class spring semester and it helped me tremendously with studying tips. I am already in contact with someone who goes to my university to help me with tutoring when I go back in the fall, specifically with math which is what I have most trouble in. I joined a biology club which also is helping me gain more knowledge and stay on track with my major which is biology. Additionally, I have already contacted my advisor to register me to take a summer course to boost my grades up and we have came up with an academic plan for the upcoming fall semester. On a personal note, I will learn to not feel ashamed to reach out for help if I am going through a hardship whether it’s a campus counselor or an online therapist.
My drive for continuing and completing my education are far stronger as a first generation student than the struggles i may face. I am committed to regaining good academic standing and in completing my degree. However, neither of these goals will be possible for me without the assistance and opportunity financial aid provides because I am a first generation student and my family and I don’t have the full means to pay out of pocket.
All in all, I appreciate your time and opportunity to continue pursuing my education with your support.
Sincerely,
END OF APPEAL LETTER.
I didn’t seek professional help for my mental health - didn’t go to a therapist. So I don’t have documentation to add.. what can I do about that?
I was told I can have a colleague that I worked with in the past write a letter as a 3rd party sign off because they were aware of what I was struggling with.

2024.05.16 17:05 Ok_Football8839 Synergy with Thoma

Well I got my Wanderer yesterday and I was planning to use my c2 Layla as a shielder, she was more than fine with him especially if I could get the cryo buff. But I show a lot of people recommending Thoma. My c4 Thoma is lvl 21 (lol) and I swap some artifacts to give him some hp and er to test him. Even at this low investment he surprised me. Yes his shield broke because he is not leveled properly, but damn he is amazing with Scara. And the consistent pyro swirls feels really nice at AoE scenarios. Scara, Faruzan, Thoma, Bennet feels great!
