2023.12.07 11:26 AlaskaMyk Legendary bandleader G.E. Smith’s resume is legit!! (Hall & Oates, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters…the list goes on)
| I went on a tangent tonight after googling “Who is the hot redheaded guitarist for SNL” (also an amazing guitarist, Maddie Smith!!) P.S. Maddie I’m single…DM me 🤣 I had no idea about the amazing career before (and after) SNL of amazing guitarist and band leader for over a decade, G.E. Smith. -1979 to 1985 - guitarist for Hall & Oates -1985 to 95 SNL bandleader (I watched almost every episode with my dad, and loved his amazing soulful intros and outros) Then after 10 years on SNL -1988-90- Bob Dylan’s 30th anniversary tour -2010-13 Lead guitarist for Roger Waters’ “The Wall” tour. (Anyone that knows PF, knows that filling David Gilmour shoes is quite the task.) Also Touredwith Buddy Guy, fronted his own side projects, Moonslice, etc… and filled in and played with tons other legends. Check Wifi for the full run, and take some time to look up his YouTube stuff. Straight Shredder!! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/G._E._Smith Oh yeah, did I mention he was married to Gilda Radner 1980-82?? 🤯 submitted by AlaskaMyk to LiveFromNewYork [link] [comments] |
2022.10.02 22:28 StrangerAtaru TMNT '87 - Ep. 86-91
TERRAPIN STATION: A CASUAL LOOK AT "TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES" (1987 FRED WOLF EDITION)
Season 4:
Set 4. 86. Rondo in New York: Watching cartoons on a computer screen instead of a television...seriously, the fantastic lengths of stupidity this franchise does astounds me.
Alright, I think whatever hiccups of the last set are not quite gone, but we actually have another fun one here about the whole element of "reality meets fantasy". The main plot involves the Turtles going to see a new movie starring your typical 1980s action hero (think Stallone meets Willis with a dash of Schwartzeneggar...only turning out to basically be Link Hogthrob with Tom Cruise's height problems in real life), with the Shredder and Krang scheme being a rather ludicrous one that somehow works involving using a new formula that they hacked into a computer to discover that brings "inanimate objects to life". While it sounds like a rerun of other times inanimate objects came to life in this franchise (I mean we just had "Peking Turtle" last set!), it actually is a G-rated version of an "Amazing Stories" episode I remember called "Miscalculation", only with film stock instead of magazines. I do like that as goofy as the plot is, it does end up having it's weaknesses, including how since the threats are made of film stock, bright lights end up weakening them; plus how Shredder thinks bigger by taking advantage of a monster movie marathon to bring even more threats to life aside the initial element of the creatures used in the action film. It also gets hilarious when we get the film version of the action hero being all macho while the real one is still a coward and the punchline where...well, "Tom and Jerry" basically save the day. (set up rather well early on and just used for a great finale) I do have some issues with it like how the scientist behind this is also the projectionist at the movie theater...or and how he literally brings a dangerous substance that could bring things to life with him to said movie theater stupidly...but after the stupidity of dealing with "Shredder's Mom" and "Four Turtles and a Baby", a silly but fun action romp is not a bad thing to have here.
87. Planet of the Turtles: So apparently we eventually get both a "Planet of the Turtles" and a "Planet of the Turtloids" on this show; and you have to wonder...why do we need both? Well..."Planet of the Turtles" actually came first and...it's actually a fun episode, sort of just embracing the zaniness of this era. And I do mean it: the whole focus is on some piece of junk invention sold over TV by a plaid suited guy...who happens to be a turtle from an alien world of turtles (just roll with it), and Shredder and Krang actually use it and...steal all the energy from the Earth to repower the Technodrome. And I'm impressed by this plot: sure it's goofy and nonsensical but it works in the idea that we had from something like "Mr. Ogg Goes to Town" in the manner that there are other planets and universes that have technology, even simple technology that is faulty in it's own right (there's a subplot that it's so shoddily made that it could explode and annihilate everything with it) but still enough that it could help Shredder and Krang if they figure out how to get their hands on it! And to cap off the fun but ludicrous plot, not only do they get the Turtle salesman but two turtles (who are basically just turtle versions of Hans and Franz from SNL but also wrestlers) who end up being used as minions and who end up fighting against the main Turtles just for the sake of having a good showdown with them, which actually also works to Shredder's advantage! It's another of those "just roll with it" episodes but I think it's even better than the last one in that it just sort of goes so out there and insane but works with it's logic, including the madness of the Turtle planet and the rivalry with the wrestlers let alone how the Turtles need the help of the same sleazy salesman who gave Shredder the device in the first place to get them to the scientist to fix it...with even more crummy tech that could blow at any second!
Plus I love the line Krang gives where "we'll destroy the Earth...THEN WE'LL GO INTO RERUNS...I think." (that's just an amazing self-aware line that even they realize how they will end up if they win)
88. Name that Toon: Uuuuugh....just...UUUUUGH!
I remember this episode. I remember hating this episode even as a kid. I couldn't remember remembering why I hated it despite being a fan of music usually in shows...but then rewatching it, it all just came back and it was just...yeah, it's reputation is as bad as you'd think.
So Shredder and Krang find an alien spaceship and strip it's computer for parts (making me think for a moment that it was the one from "Bye, Bye, Fly" but that fell apart on it's own and the computer...more on that later). One of the parts they end up taking out was a "de-materializer" that they plant in the sewers that, when it explodes (despite it's many, many times it keeps changing how much time it has left), it will evaporate a good chunk of the city with it. However, another part they get rid of is the "master control" for the ship, which happens to look like a Casio keyboard...which they just throw into a portal to Earth. Right into a used music shop. Where it happens to be bought by a Woody Allen knockoff who writes terrible songs. Oh and did I mention he happens to be Irma's latest boyfriend? Yeah, as convoluted as the plot already is with it's stupidity and the factors that force it along (especailly how we get a stupid device that they end up abandoning the only means to control it on Earth that ends up in happenstance with some sort of Earth situation and how convoluted that already is), this is the first of two consecutive episodes with Howie, Irma's annoying musical boyfriend and his annoying songs, usually about the TMNT in general. I find it annoying enough that he's a Woody Allen knockoff (not a mere nerd like the one we just saw in "Rondo in New York") and that they basically do a similar plot to Blodgett in "Curse of the Evil Eye", but add in the terrible songs he sings and how that's the key to stopping the dematerializer and you just end up with one of the most infamous episodes of the show ever made. Maybe there's some decent action in the apartment for a fight scene...but even "Shredder's Mom" had some decent moments (just ruined by...well, the whole "Shredder's Mom" thing) and how random and stupid the dematerializer is and how it requires such a convoluted method that happens into the stupidest of hands to be stopped (and how random it's numbers and activation/de-activation ends up getting) just makes me hope that we never have to deal with anything of this nonsense ever again.
The bad news: the very next episode has more Howie. The good news: it's also the last ever episode with Howie. (as much as I rather have no Howie, two episodes back to back gets rid of him quickly)
89. Menace Maestro, Please: Uh...just...make it end already.
So...remember last episode when Shredder and Krang stole parts from a spaceship for that plot with the dematerializer? Well aside from the nonsense of Howie returning, it turns out that plot continues too in the most unexpected and stupid way. The main plot involves an old music theater that is being renovated and they end up having Howie trying to fix up the pipe organ to help it along. Unfortunately this theater has a legend about a "phantom" lurking within (obviously in reference to "The Phantom of the Opera"...hey, a callback to the Europe arc!) that Shredder just decides out of nowhere that he's going to use (and literally no one realizes it's him even though it's literally the Phantom with Shredder's mask on!). Except...there really is a phantom...no wait, it's another alien, disguised as this stupid hick who was trying to protect the theater who was stuck there with the ship...that Shredder and Krang stole from last time unknowingly...(seriously, we had all that garbage with ancient spaceships prior and there's literally another one and no one even knew about it and Shredder didn't know aboutt he Phantom garbage before this episode?) Stuff happens, the alien and Howie briefly turn into Bebop and Rocksteady (seriously he literally briefly gives his powers to Howie to become one of the dummies...), the alien leaves and Howie sings more stupid songs while Irma swoons over him...
There, the Howie arc is done, can we move on!?
90. Superhero for a Day: You sort of have to wonder what the world of heroism was like prior to the Turtles. However unlike "Shredder's Mom" which tries to be way more wacky and silly about it, here we get one that is silly but at least does try to do something interesting. In this case, we meet Gadgetman, a Blue Beetle (the Ditko era one)-esque old crimefighter who wants to get back into the swing of things to prove he can still save the day even with the TMNT running around, only causing problems due to the technology he uses causing more harm than good and just his advance age working against him. The funny thing is that Shredder does try to recruit Gadgetman to help him as a "superhero agent" to protect him from the Turtles, and as silly as it sounds, it actually works well in that to him, Shredder is just a costumed crimefighter in a "metal ninja motif" and the Turtles would probably be the greater threat. Sure it leads to yet another scheme where they're trying to get energy for the Technodrome to get it out of Dimension X, but I do like that Gadgetman sees the error of his ways and eventually helps them in the end before retiring for good. While a tad cliche in the "old superhero" bit, the episode works and was still fun in the end.
91. Back to the Egg: One of the weird things that the '87 show did when mutating the Turtles in the beginning was that they were just mutated to be anthro mutant teenagers from the moment they got hit by the mutagen; there was no "growing up" phase that actually showed more sense in how they became what they were when the story starts. I reasoned that Hamato Yoshi did spend time with the Turtles as they were babies but it took years of them living in the sewers that they were technically "teenagers" when the mutagen finally changed all of them. Well...after this episode...we didn't miss anything not having "kid Turtles"...in fact, I have to say that not having kid turtles may have been the best thing this era ever did if this is how they'd end up!
To sum up this terrible episode: Krang devises a serum to change beings to a much younger state, possibly all the way back to birth as we see a chicken just change into an egg when first used. Shredder is asked to do the same to the Turtles, but due to crap happening, only Leonardo and Michaelangelo are changed...and they only become kids because...of course. And if you thought "Four Turtles and a Baby" was bad with kid characters, this one was as bad if not worse, considering how annoying kid Leo and Mikey are; in fact the whole episode is a culmination of everything that went wrong with the syndicated era of the show, from April being stuck as a babysitter to tickle torment to another random new villain that shows up at Krang's orders (a circusmaster and his ape-alien counterpart...great, do we also need "Turtles of the Jungle" reminders?) that are as ineffective as Shredder is in dealing with this. (this seems to be a thing this season in giving Shredder others that aren't Bebop and Rocksteady to interact with like it was the old days with Baxter Stockman...except they gave an interesting plot and evolution to Baxter that kept him interesting and memorable despite the alterations from his Mirage counterpart and, barring Hans and Fitz from "Planet of the Turtles", all the other threats are just stupid and idiotic!) It's a terrible episode and one that I just want to forget ever happened.
The sad thing: there are only two more syndicated episodes after this next season technically. And the mere fact that this is basically how the syndicated run ends (give or take Europe)...I just wonder why they decided to make these if they had to also make the CBS episodes too. And considering things, the mere fact that we had 4 "Good" episodes in the 13 Syndicated episodes of the season (the three consecutive middle episodes of "Turtlemaniac", "Rondo in New York" and "Planet of the Turtles" plus "Superhero for a Day"), it makes me fear how CBS will end up.

2020.07.27 01:22 Phillies059 The Merger Fact List
I'm so glad Sam pointed out to Angela that Dwight's car in the Pilot was a Datsun 280Z and not the Pontiac! As a car person I've always been interested in all the different cars everyone drives throughout the show. I'm hoping they talk a little bit more about that as characters get different cars later on.
The Merger - Episode written by Brent Forrester and directed by Ken Whittingham.
- Fast Fact: Ken directed nine total episodes of The Office.
- Ken and Greg Daniels decided where the Stamford employees would be seated at the Scranton branch. Since Ryan took Jim's old desk, they put Jim right in front of Dwight so he could annoy Dwight. But he was also put there so he would be right in the middle of Karen and Pam, and Pam could easily see any interactions between him and Karen. Andy was put between Kevin and Angela to establish Andy's instant attraction to Angela, and also so that they would be in Dwight's direct line of sight. Tony was put in the back near Toby since he would be leaving after this episode.
- Fast Fact: This is the first episode written by Brent Forester.
- Brent had previously written with Greg on The Simpsons and King of the Hill, and Greg brought him in to write this episode.
- Brent's first draft of this episode was very off and didn't capture the tone of The Office at all. So Greg had Mike Schur, Jen Selotta, and Paul Liberstein sit down with him and explain the tone of the show.
- Fast Fact: Tony Gardner is played by Mike Bruner, Hannah Smoterich-Barr is played by Ursula Burton, and Martin Nash is played by Wayne Wilderson.
- Everyone knew that Tony, Hannah, and Martin would only be temporary characters. There was a conversation about how after “The Merger,” each week one Stamford employee would quit until it was down to just Andy and Karen.
- The plant at reception at 1:06 is different than the one at 5:25. The original cold open in the script was scrapped, so the cold open was shot on a different day which is why the plants are different.
- Dwight running around the building was a one shot with no cuts, so Rainn Wilson took a shortcut through the warehouse set when he was running to get back around to the front of the building quickly.
- Any time plastic or paper bags need to be used in a scene, they're replaced with fake bags that look real but don't make any noise so they don't interfere with the audio.
- Pam's hair looks a little different in this episode which was done purposely because of Jim coming back.
- Michael walks Hannah to her desk from reception, but then she's standing at reception again when Tony comes in after her.
- When Andy is doing his talking head in the parking lot he has a tan jacket on, but when he comes into the office it's nowhere to be seen.
- Jenna had a huge zit while shooting this episode and the makeup department had to cover it up.
- Ryan's talking head where he says "Yeah. Jim is a nice guy. That’s why I got the desk" was an alternate line they shot on that day. The original talking head was supposed to be "Why? Because this is Ryan's desk now."
- In the iTunes version of this episode, there is a scene where Kevin is using a Staples paper shredder. Staples paid the show to have one of the characters use their shredder in the episode.
- At 12:36, Mindy Kaling breaks character.
- In the conference room scenes, Ken purposely put the Scranton employees and the Stamford employees on opposite sides of the table, except for Karen. Rashida asked him why and he said it was to put her, Pam, and Jim in the same shot to capture all their reactions when Karen passes Jim a stick of gum.
- Michael's “Lazy Scranton” video was based off of the SNL sketch “Lazy Sunday.”
- There is more footage from the “Lazy Scranton” video that wasn't used in the final cut.
- There were a lot of different comedy bits written for Michael to perform during the conference room meeting.
- Ken, Brent, and Angela discussed how big of a smile Angela would have when Andy shows her his desktop wallpaper of a cat.
- In the UK show, there's an episode called "Motivation" where David Brent says he would never make his employees stand on a table because it's against health and safety regulations.
- Tony only works in Scranton for one day, yet he's in Michael's movie Threat Level Midnight. B.J. Novak said that the writers thought it would be funny for Tony to have a cameo in Michael's movie. They thought that Michael had a realization that he was wrong and called up to apologize to Tony, and then said "I would like to offer you a role in my movie."
- At 22:56, the guy standing next to Andy is Phillip Cintani. He was a stand-in for the actors.
- Since the elevator actually went nowhere, Andy and Dwight getting in and out of the elevator were filmed in two different places.
