2024.05.03 22:58 OneTrueSneaks [MTN][YRG][30%][250][Coast][Chokepoint] Seed: bomb 0.00°S 7.54°E - Large enclosed defensible space, huge mountain to build in, two safe geysers, exposed plasteel

I mentioned this seed in a comment, finally got around to posting it. I could've sworn I had in the past, but apparently not.
This is one of the most perfect maps I've ever found. Easily defended area. Huge space for animal pastures and crop fields. Solid mountain made entirely of granite and marble. Two steam geysers in the safe area for power, and a third relatively close by the 'gate'.
Full album of images
I always prefer landing in jungles, but you can change the biome by modifying the temperature or rainfall sliders. Lots of trees and animals. No caves, roads, or rivers.
The southern mountain is almost entirely solid. The right side is deep ocean. There's only one way into the valley, though there are a couple of narrower spaces on the mountain that you might want to reinforce with granite walls.
Bit spoilery. You can see the ancient danger hidden inside the mountain. The northern mountain is hollow, so don't dig up there. But with as much space as there is, you shouldn't need to anyway.
A nice starting cave
Dig three spots that are highlighted purple and you'll reveal the only open areas in the mountain. The first area on the left makes for a very nice beginning cave to live in until you can dig out more. The third area on the far right has exposed plasteel on the northern edge, though you'll need to dig a tunnel to it.
Between plenty of open sand for windmills and solar panels, and a third geyser a little bit outside the 'gate', you should have no problem keeping your base powered, and your power supplies safe.
This is end-game Anomaly, mostly vanilla, but it's so far zoomed out that there shouldn't be any spoilers. The top half of the valley became an animal pasture / pen, with the central mountain dug out to be a barn. South half of the valley was used for crop fields. The wonky shape of the wall was to keep as much of the fertile soil for crops as possible - there's three patches of it total, with a small one near the door into the base, and the largest one at the top close to the geysers. Even with a 58-person colony and needing so much storage space because I didn't use any storage mods, I still ended up using only about 2/3 of the mountain. So much room for activities!
(reposted for accidentally capitalizing the seed, which changes map gen entirely)

Tile sheet adhesive is water soluble?!
I'm working for the first time with small hex marble tile that comes on a backer and while cutting with my wet saw, I noticed tiles started falling off the sheet when they got too wet. Is this supposed to happen? My concern is that I will thinset these in place and then any shower water that reaches the tile bottom will cause the tiles to come loose as the adhesive dissolves. I thought maybe it doesn't matter because the thinset can come into contact with the tile between the mesh but as you can see from the picture, sometimes the glue is covering most of the tile surface. Is something wrong with this tile? Is it not meant for wet areas? Should I be concerned? Do I need to pull and wash all of them and set individually? Thanks in advance for any thoughts and recommendations.

2024.04.17 16:07 Pedrosian96 How do mods work?

Hello there! I haven't played BL2 in almost five whole years. now that I have a capable computer that won't overheat itself to ashes just chugging it at minimum settings, I decided to revisit this old but gold treat of a game, and remembered that last I played it, mods made quite a difference in how much I liked my time.

I just don't remember how they work anymore.
If memory serves right, most modifications to BL2 consist of hex edits; most mods downloaded from nexus are indeed these. It then took a hex editor to load them into the game.
I believe that tool was the Borderlands Community Mod Manager? Where it allowed you to place various hex edits of your choosing and run the game with them active, allowing things like respawning enemies and tweaked settings and the like (I remember I used to run a mod that tweaked most vault hunter skills, such as exchanging Zer0's ability placements in the skill tree in a few cases).
Was there something else needed?
On the topic of the BCMM, the more recent comments appear to indicate latest versions have some sort of issue going on. could someone confirm? I managed to more or less test out vanilla BL2 and ensure it is running smooth and stable (somehow, setting PhysX higher leads to crashes?... on an RTX4080?........ but everything else, stable and smooth as marble)
With that: any particular mods you'd suggest I look for? anything that came out in these latest years that made the game way more enjoyable for you? any recommendations?
Thank you in advance. :)

Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

1. Circumference - Time [Neksus Sound]

Recommended if you like: Rillium, YAANO, Xeonz
It's about damn time we talk about the absurdly amazing Bristol-based boyband collective Circumference! Well, I mean, technically, we already did back when we featured Soulvent's Soul Music 2020 compilation and Kit's 2021 debut EP, but, if I'm being honest, that barely covered anything of their wonderful journey so far. So let's take this extra spicy new release of theirs as an opportunity to rectify this mistake and delve a little deeper!
First off, as the intro implied, you should know that Circumference consists of two excellent producer friends, Finlay Freshney-Lee and Kit Jones, but let's take a look at the former first, before we get to the latter.
With parental influences ranging from the likes of Joy Division and Public Image Limited seeing regular airplay at the Freshney-Lee home to his dad also being an absolute menace on the guitar, it makes sense that music would be a big part of Finlay's life, but you probably wouldn't expect him to end up where he is now. While all this meant he was already big on music in general, it was the infamous "2012-2015 era of dubstep and general bass music" that made him a massive fan of all things electronic. So much so, that he even tried his own hand at getting something made, with his very first released tune arriving in 2015, a Techno banger under the alias Dimensions. However, both the genre and the alias didn't survive what I'm just gonna call the Noisia effect™️. After initially discovering the legendary Dutch trio through the more Dubsteppy parts of their multi-faceted discography, Finlay of course eventually also stumbled upon their DnB output, and the rest, as they say, is history.
History we'll talk about further, of course! Over the years, the drums and the basses took more and more hold of him, and in 2017 he unveiled a brand new project to tackle both of those at the same time: Freshney! After kicking off the alias with bootlegs of Dead Limit and Fox Stevenson's Miss You (a proper wombo combo), it was time to put out his first originals, with his debut EP Convolve leading the way on Lost Recordings in 2018. You know what also happened that year? Circumference was officially born! Wait, what? Well, when Finlay started his studies at the college in Exeter in 2017, he befriended this guy called Kit Jones. Similar to Fin, Kit's got a lot of his musicality through his family, with dad’s CD and vinyl collection and the "extremely musical nan" being the main catalyst in his early years, but his start into the electronic world would follow not all too much later, thanks to stumbling upon Daft Punk_’s debut album _Homework in 2010. Production-wise, he was more of a Bassline and even Garage dude, but everything changed when this freshman dude called Finlay came around and showed him this weird fast music.
In 2018, both Finlay and Kit started organising events under the BASS-EXE banner, which is where they actually debuted their collaborative project for the very first time. Their production debut didn't take much longer to arrive either, with their freely downloadable banger GLASS LID on The Skank Bank dropping in 2019 and their first official release, a remix for Ruth Royall's Paper Dragon project, following in 2020. With inspirations ranging from Hildur Guðnadóttir to The Sauce and unusual instruments like the Armenian Duduk being incorporated in their creations, their output really was unlike any other, and quickly found a home on the likes of Soulvent, Flexout and Overview. While this dynamic duo was working out rather well, they still had a whole lot of solo ambitions to share with the world during this time.
On the one hand, Finlay not only remixed Zombie Cats, collaborated with Portuguese maestro Jon Tho on Soulvent and pushed his sound across basically the whole techy scene, with Surveillance, Blackout, NËU, Sinful Maze and Redacted all clamoring for that sweet sweet new patella, he also pursued some experimental vibes with his second alias not.LNEAR. On the other hand, Kit finally started putting out some of his own stuff, starting with freebie Faulty and ending with his aforementioned EP on Surveillance. On the third, joint, hand, the both of them showed how ridiculous their remixing talent can be as Circumference, with respins of Grafix's Stutter and KL!P & LAFA's Remembr. After a bit of a break in 2023, the now Bristol-based bois returned with a bang - their Alter EP on MODUS! As if that wasn't massive enough, they now raise the bar once again, with their debut on a label so uniquely heavy in the sounds that it's pushing that we frankly need to talk about it more often on here: none other than Annix & Simula's imprint Neksus Sound. So let's check it out, shall we?
One might think with a name like Time we're talking about a regular ol' singular single, but it's actually a double-sided one, kicking off with Nowhere! While the hauntingly beautiful vocal on top of a welcoming warmness building itself up further and further might start off melodic enough, the main bassline's heart arrhythmia type wonkiness soon pulls us down into a world of oddness. Straight-up weird yet mesmerising bass movements, already heavy distortion action getting more and more in-your-face, proper snappy drums - entrancing is the right word, I would say. On the flipside, Always smoothly pulls us out of said trance, with its relentlessly repeating, delightfully strange vocal distantly ringing in our heads like a morning alarm you'd like to ignore. As is often the case, however, ignoring doesn't quite work, and as Time goes on, more and more parts of the vocal open up, until we are hit smack-dab in the face, with some properly chopped-up madness. Now that we're fully present, the duo mercilessly throws us back and forth between the eery yet pleasant floating, looping and rolling and the fake-dropped chopping, stabbing, stepping and bass wubbing - simply nuts!
Time and Time again, these two have Always taken us on all sorts of wonderfully weird journeys - Nowhere else did it sound as unique, murky and straight-up banging as on Neksus though!
Other techy murky stuff from this week: - Sleepnet - II - SMG - Critical Presents: Binary Vol. 28 - Farflow - Smoke & Mirrors EP (Part 2) - Dapreme - Gimmie That EP - coil circuit - Control 💎

2. Yue - Set Sail [Pilot]

Recommended if you like: Fox Stevenson, Dossa & Locuzzed
Enough Bri'ish'ism, let's check out some new Dutchie vibes, provided by up-and-comer Yue!
Saying that Fleur Koelman, the Amsterdam-based artist behind this production debut, is "new" does feel kind of wrong though. Okay okay, let's jump back in time to explore what I mean with that cryptic statement. As a kid, back then still living in her hometown Alkmaar, Fleur was already busting out some bombastic basses with her trusty cello and even exploring the songwriting side of things, but when the infamous Skrillex wave™️ hit the world, teenage her knew she had to become a part of the electronic music world as well. At only 14 years of age, which should be around 10 years ago now if my professional internet stalking notes are correct, she already played her first gigs, and not all too long after, her Dubstep-Bass-and-Deephouse DJing stage name HitGirl was born. One by one, she conquered the Dancefloors around the country, sometimes as HitGirl, sometimes going by the name of Miss Molotov, but things were taken to an entirely new level when she started interning at what seems to be the coolest, most loveliest employer ever, Liquicity.
Not only had she become one of the main faces of the brand from 2018 on, the label management also got so enamoured with the digital art projects she had been dabbling in during that time that they recruited her to do more and more artworks and animations for the imprint's releases, to the point that she's now become a huge part of the visual identity on both the main label and its Galacy sister platform nowadays. During these early days, so late 2018, early 2019, she also debuted a brand new stage name: Yue! As someone so involved with Liquicity, it makes sense that she also regularly plays out some bangers at their events, from the family day to the summer festival, but over the years, she's also spun some sick selections at raves organised by the likes of NOX, Moonshine, Beats'N’Bass and Explicit. In the midst of all of this, she also found the time to pursue the production game. Years of slaving away both on her own and under the guidance of her significant other Mr. Stevenson, for whom she's also done some truly amazing artworks and even some backing vocals every now and then, have lead up to this point - her debut release on none other than UKF's Pilot, the aptly-titled Set Sail!
With a delightfully whimsical piano and a satisfyingly synthesised vocal fill, we are instantly transported to a place of sunshine, beaches and just generally a whole lot of summer vibes, before we've even crossed the 10 seconds mark. On this plane of feel-good vibery, we are treated to a vocal performance from Fleur that isn't just absolutely marvellous and elevates the whole atmosphere even further somehow, it's also expertly punctuated with distant background vocals and more and more layering further along the intro. Not just the vocal engineering is on point, however, the pure energy radiating from the drop is just incredible. Rapid-fire futuristic synths, shuffly drums, warmly wompy bass, plus all the fun vocal processing stuff from the intro, all coming together to form one undoubtably fantastic banger.
Positively fleured by this yuegely vibey, koel as hell debut! On a more serious note though, with a debut as great as this, I honestly cannot wait to see what else she's got in store for us in the future.
Other vibey things from this week: - Andromedik - Rise EP - [BORDERS], Puzzle - Grounded - barking continues - free (Remixes) - Niallo - Agnosthesia - Nia Archives - Silence Is Loud LP

2024.04.14 22:33 agnaa_pants Respect Quirinus Quirrell, Voldemort (Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality)

Killing idiots is my great joy in life, and I’ll thank you not to speak ill of it until you’ve tried it for yourself.
Tom Morfin Riddle, for most of the story going by the name of Quirinus Quirrell, but at times taking up a variety of names, including Lord Voldemort, David Monroe, Alexander Chernyshov, and Jeremy Jaffe, is an antagonist in the Harry Potter fanfiction Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. Prior to the start of the series, he saw the wizarding world as at threat from the muggle world, so he seeked to unify it with him at the helm. Initially creating a Dark Lord alter ego for magical Britain to unify against, along with impersonating someone he killed to play the part of a hero, so he could orchestrate both sides of the conflict. He eventually found the other wizards so incompetent that he gave up on having the good guys win, deciding to have the Dark Lord take over magical Britain, aiming to eventually take over the world, instead.
However, his events hit a snag when he learnt of a prophecy telling of his possible defeat. In trying to resolve it favorably for him, he accidentally ended up killing himself, and to his surprise, his system of improved horcruxes didn't let him come back on his own; he had to wait a decade for Quirinus Quirrell to stumble upon one of them so that he could return, possessing Quirrell's body. After that, he enrolled as the Defense Professor at Hogwarts, at least partially as part of a plot to get the Philosopher's Stone. Eventually, he heard of further prophecies indicating that Harry Potter would tear apart the stars and destroy the world. As taking over the world and becoming immortal would be pretty pointless if the world were destroyed, he resolved to contravene those prophecies every step of the way.

2024.04.05 22:50 circular_file I used Home Cheapo 1x2" carrera white mesh marble tile for my shower pan. I didn't realize until after that 10% of the tiles varied by +/- 1/16 in thickness and another 10% were upside down, showing milling marks....

I just ran an experiment. Yesterday I took some leftover tiles and thinset them to a scrap of hardiebacker. This afternoon I took a stonegrinder to them, starting at 100 and working up to 800 grit diamond disks (makes a nice 'honed' finish). It looks AWESOME. The tiles have a much more uniform finish, the edges are cleaner, the disks took out all of the milling marks and wore down the high tiles to flush or close enough to be well within comfort. The whole process took about 10 minutes on an ideal setup: workbench, standing up, etc. So, increase the time by 50%, 15 minutes per square foot, 2.5 hours to make the shower floor immaculate. Not what I really wanted to do, but it looks like it'll turn out pretty good in the end.

2024.04.05 19:19 KTX4Freedom Repairs before listing home

Realtors, I need advice & I hope this is the proper forum for this post. We are getting our home ready to put on the market Spring 2025 (yes, I’m a chronic planner). I’ve made a punch list of repairs we need to do, but would like to get opinions on a few items:
  1. We have a Thermador range that is older & 2 burners don’t work. We’ve tried to have it repaired, but Thermador no longer makes the exact part we need since it’s older discontinued model. Do we replace range before we list the home, or just list this defect in the seller’s disclosure?
  2. Our kitchen has white shaker cabinets w/ tung oiled maple countertops & a large island with carrera marble-look quartz top. It is beautiful, but what are your thoughts on the wood countertops? Will they be a deterrent to potential buyers?
  3. Our kitchen backsplash is 4x4 white square tile. Any thoughts on leaving it as is, or update?
  4. The floor tile in our bathrooms is 4x4 white square (apparently white square was the 90’s version of subway? Lol) Was considering putting LVP over the tile. Thoughts? Trying to avoid ripping out & installing new tile.
For reference, I’m in a suburb of Houston known for the amazing school district. Gated neighborhood, 1 story built in 1996, 1900 sq ft, 3/2/2. Same floor plan comps have been selling with a mix of updated finishes (either updated kitchen or bathrooms, but usually not both), $350-$375k.
I appreciate any & all advice. We are working with a realtor, but I’d like to hear from the thinktank, as I’ve learned so many helpful things from this group, and value your opinions. Thank you!

2024.04.01 19:31 AzureBeast Respect Forbush Man (Marvel, Earth-665)

Irving Forbush, Forbush Man

"Money. Is that all you people care about? You'll do whatever it takes to turn a buck, won't you? Why, next you'll be telling me that you're changing the color of the Hulk, making everyone into Skrulls and completely doing away with Spider-Man's ██████! All this just to sell a few more copies? ...Why isn't someone keeping an eye on you degenerates?"
Irving Forbush was originally the office gofer at Marble Comics, and lived in a house with his shrewish maiden aunt, Auntie Mayhem who was indirectly responsible for her nephew becoming a superhero (in a fit of pique, she slams the fabled cooking pot over Irving's head, inadvertently providing him with the disguise he'd been looking for).[citation needed]
Forbush Man went on to triumph over a number of super-powered adversaries. All of his victories were purely accidental; lacking superhuman powers, dumb luck necessarily played a major role in all of his adventures.

2024.03.24 17:31 21Kuranashi Guide: Cities and Towns

Trying my best to write a guide for the different mechanics of the game. Starting with Cities and Towns first. The game hasn't released yet so there might be some changes.
I will try to avoid National Spirits (NS) in my explanation otherwise the content is just a tad bit too much for a post. Each NS would require its own post to discuss all the benefits, their costs, and the 'n' number of strategies that would follow. Also, I am not a streamer and haven't played the game yet. These are observations / analysis on videos from YT and Twitch. Previous post

^* Imagine if your city is cramped due to mountains or hills or forests, you can skip over them using Pioneer, put an outpost, and absorb it. This would not only give 6 hex expansion but also allow for the spread of the influence directly over the difficult terrain and perhaps into plains. These outpost-absorbed towns might also be situated in good areas as they might form a 5/6 Ltown / Mtown.
6 hex adjacency is quite difficult for mining but is quite possible for lumber. Use the outpost method for lumber towns if possible. If Create Town is used then the border growth will be there but it won't be instant.
Best town improvements: Mines > Lumber > Clay > Agri (no plantations included) > Coastal

2024.03.16 19:02 Just-Effective2886 [SP] The Nightmare Loop

Chapter 1 : The Terrace
Clara was staring at the Orion's belt, basking herself under the moonlight. the fresh air caressed her skin as she stood there mindlessly taking in the scent of the summer air. One could see the huge clouds of gasses coming out of the chimneys of industries nearby. The terrace was her favorite place to be. From there she would look at the city lights far away and dream of living a lavish life in the city. People hated ‘city life’ because of the chaos but she was born out of chaos and that was the life she dreamt of. She suddenly heard her phone beep and she tried taking it out of her pocket, but she failed to do so. For a moment she felt as if her hands were paralyzed but then she saw that she didn’t have her hands. She was suddenly standing on the brink of the wall of her terrace and there were kids laughing out loud telling her to jump, a girl came to her giggling and laughing. Almost immediately she pushed her from the 6th floor. Clara woke up panting, her whole body trembling and covered with beads of cold sweat. She felt a pair of hands on her stomach and got sucked into her bed, there were people all around her but nobody was noticing her. She was panicking, “oh god, get me out of this dream. Please” she sobbed uncontrollably, that is when a woman started running after her with an axe in her hands. She ran to a distance and slowly got fatigued by the act of running constantly. The woman slowed down and morphed into an older woman, and decapitated Clara with her axe. Clara could still see her decapitated head lying on the ground and a teardrop falling from her eye. But then she realized that the decapitated girl looked a lot younger than her present self. Perhaps she was still alive she looked at her hand and this time she saw only two fingers in her hand. She fell unconscious and woke up again in her room. She hoped to have woken up from her nightmare, she looked around the room and then she saw a lot of difference. It wasn’t her room…
Chapter 2 : The Room
The room's walls were painted with warm colors which gave them a comforting vibe, it was different from her original room which was barely plastered and whose wallpapers had started to rot away from the excessive moisture. Clara looked around the room, still trembling with fear due to her nightmares . Although she didn't quite recognize the room, but still somehow a sense of familiarity washed over her and she felt deja'vu of the concrete walls surrounding her. She looked around the room for some time to gather her thoughts. Afterward she went to look at herself, in the mirror attached to the closet . Upon inspection she found a huge scar on her forehead possibly from an accident. She was now starting to get confused. How had she gotten that scar?how did she get here? And what was the meaning of the nightmare she had before ? Whether it was a nightmare or was it real? As she was brainstorming these questions she suddenly found out that something was written on her chest barely visible due to her clothes. She took off her clothes to see the engraving written on her chest. She looked at the mirror and to her surprise found a message written on her chest by what seemed like a marker . The engraving read 'Look how big the monster inside of me has become!!' . Suddenly a soul crushing fear paralyzed her body rendering her mind into a state of panic . She lay on the floor for a while, it was as if the engraving on her chest had cast a hex on her body . Clara didn't quite understand the engraving but she was certain of one thing, that something terrible had happened which she couldn't remember. After a while as her body began to regain its composure she started to search around the room and After some time of inspection found a journal inside of the closet. It read...
Chapter 3: The consciousness
"14th april 2023 It's been a month since I have been trapped inside of my own mind reliving my past memories as nightmares only to be killed and wake up in another nightmare. If you find this then remember this is not real nothing is, infact the world around you is a creation of your own subconscious the one making your life miserable is none other than you yourself. There is no point in resisting for, the more you resist the harder it will be for you to wake up that is, if you ever wake up . And at last remember the shape morphing creature following you is your pure subconscious you already know what you have to do to wake up but you won't accept it now, would you? because I didn't."" It felt as if the whole world had collapsed into itself as the pain of realization gripped Clara ,the nightmares she had were just as real as her own reality and she had been doing it for god knows how long. She felt light headed and when she regained herself, she found herself standing on the same terrace she had been thrown off by the young girl the place where it all began.
Looking around the marble panelled terrace she found the same girl who had pushed her off but this time she knew it was not a girl but rather her own conscience. She was trying to kill herself this whole time but couldn't because of her own conflicting desire to live. She looked at the projection of her conscience. Now she was not afraid of it, for she knew what she had to do ,she hugged the projection of her conscience and holding her jumped off the terrace . This time she was not afraid she felt liberated as if her whole body was melting with her surroundings her heart felt light as if she had finally achieved peace. Then her eyes opened but this time she wasn't in her room or the terrace but rather on floor her body was paralysed and blood was gushing out of her.
Blood was staining the floor she had finally snapped back to reality but it was no different from her nightmares . The only difference was that she was now dying and she knew she won't wake up ever again after this.. Oh Such a horrible fate for a person to live through an endless nightmare not losing hope and to keep on going, thinking it will soon stop only to wake up and find herself dying and realise that she would be mere dust after 100 of years only a particle consisted of nothingness truly a pity.
The end

2024.03.14 00:53 alrightokay2 How to finish the window sill in this shower?

How to finish the window sill in this shower?
I’m going to use Carrera marble for the sill and the section under the sill. Can I just build up the sill with polymer heavy duty mortar so that it’s angled down into the shower? Same goes for the piece under the sill that lies flat on the wall; the cement board stops, and the framing is shy 1/4 inch. Can I just go heavy on the mortar bed to flatten it out?
Thanks in advance!!

Three grout colors in one bathroom?
Help! My husband wants to do three grouts in the bathroom and they grout tomorrow and we have to decide.
Our shower wall tile is Cloe Bedrosian white with Mapei’s avalanche grout
Our shower floor tile is Merola Tile textured bliss porcelain “marble” hex
Our bathroom floor is Merola Tile Florencio calacatta gold in matte
For the bathroom floor we agree that Mapei Warm Gray is what we want to use as the pattern is already busy. However. We did a test board with Warm Gray (lightest on the right side of the board) on the shower pan floor tile and we’re very unhappy with how light it was so we also put samples of Pewter (darkest) and Cobblestone (medium color on the left)
We both would like a bit more contrast to see the outline of the hex tile better, and we feel pewter would wear better on the shower pan, but I am concerned about having three grout colors in one bathroom, especially with a curb less shower with no threshold.
Please help us decide, is pewter on the shower pan a good idea vs warm gray? Tough to tell in photos but cobblestone is reading VERY lilac in person so that’s a no.

2024.02.23 21:47 Jake-C0803 The Last TV I’ll Ever Mount

I’m not sure if this is a sub relevant post, but I figured someone would get a kick out of it.
So, for reference, I’ve mounted a plenty of TVs before - both before and after going out on my own doing handyman work. They serve as a nice fill-in on days with quick jobs and as weekend work. I’ve never had an issue with them.
About a month ago, I did a job for a couple that were still in the process of moving into a newly built lakehouse. They needed 4 TVs mounted, two in bedrooms, one in the living room, and one over an outdoor fireplace. They had several other small things that needed done as well, furniture assembly and the like.
Everything but the living room TV went smoothly. The mounting went fine, as the builder had blocking specifically put in for the TV above the fireplace mantle. The only issue being that the blocking was too high for where the client wanted the TV, so I used the hex lugs from the mounting set on the top row of the bracket, and two 1/2 toggle bolts on the bottom (spaced around 20” apart to avoid putting too much stress on too small a section of drywall).
So, I mounted the TV, and turned it on. Lo and behold, it was cracked. I hadn’t checked the TV screen prior to installation, so I had to assume I had done it. The clients were extremely patient about the entire thing, and suggested returning it to Walmart. I returned it, they bought the new one, and I installed it. No issues, just a load of stress and a ton of apologizing.
Now, skip ahead to yesterday. I had been back there several times for a variety of small projects they needed done, and the clients decided they’d like to change the angle of the TV in the living room to sit flatter against the wall. So, the husband and I took off the TV, I changed the mounting angle (the load of the TV made it tough to do while mounted), and remounted the TV. After it was back up, I was working on slightly adjusting how it was sitting, and BOOM. The mount came out of the wall completely.
The bottom rail brackets hadn’t been put back on yet thankfully, so I was able to catch the TV as it fell. The top lugs apparently weren’t set properly into the 2x10 blocking, and obviously my two toggle bolts on the bottom didn’t do nearly enough to support the weight (dumb of me not to better support the top, and to even bother with the toggles).
So, I reattached the mount with some 6” lag screws I had on hand. 4 on top, one on the bottom through a stud. I hung from it to ensure it was secure, put the TV back up, and was distraught but unsurprised to find that there was a crack behind the glass of the TV in the top right corner.
I had only $329 in my bank account, and the TV was worth $578 or so (70” Samsung). I told them I’d give them everything I had, and not charge for that days work/come back and work until we were square. Again, they were extremely patient, and only asked me to pay for half. So I paid them $320 (I wanted to do as much as I could), and we went and got yet another TV. After it was on the wall and 100% secure, they still paid me $100 for the day (I fought like hell against taking it).
It was a shit day, and I don’t think I’ll be touching another TV mount. But, let me tell you, I don’t think I’ve ever met sweeter clients. I’m pretty young to be working solo (22), and so I know some mistakes are a given, but it was a profoundly disheartening experience. Especially so because it was entirely due to an oversight that came from inexperience.
All that said, I made a similar mistake when I was younger working as a tile setter. I cut a marble curb too short - on rent week no less. It left me broke after buying a new one, but I never made the same mistake. I hope this was a new, hard way for me to learn to be more cautious and through in the future.
I’m determined to make it up to them somehow - just not in any way that involves handling a TV.
TL;DR I was a dumbass who managed two break two TVs at the same job, and I’m extremely grateful to have the kindest clients known to man.
