I went through all the possible posts of Master's Union, and I am left confused with how credible it is. 80% of the comments are saying it is not worth it, or the Bschool hasn't proven it's worth yet. And the few nicer commemts are very well written to the point it doesn't seem genuine.
I will get my offer letter today, as a management trainee/intern closing with working founders and looking over marketing, sales and research etc. I have past experience of getting into internships which have no real credibility. Therefore I want to confirm about this one.
Also when I had a sort of interview call, I wasn't really asked about any of previous experience, or the learning I am doing currently. When I ask what they expect from an intern like me , the answer was just "willingness to learn".
So can some shed some perspective that doing a internship here would be credible or not? I don't wanna be a part of something that seems shady.

Doing interviews for a lawyer position that calls for many years of experience - not an intern or clerk or even entry level attorney position. Our panel opens up the resume (we don’t discuss candidates ahead of the interview) for the next candidate and his resume includes not only his LSAT score but his SAT score - wait for it… broken down by verbal and math! We thought, maybe a 20 year old genius somehow got through resume screening despite the lack of experience? Nope, bro was like mid-30s. We hated him just on principle. Plus he acted exactly how you would imagine someone would act who included his SAT score on his resume. Please don’t be like bro. After the interview, the panel was silent and then the oldest partner just says “I’m surprised he didn’t include when he was fully potty trained.” Seriously, does anybody include this on their resume unless they are still in high school? Were we being too hard on this guy?

2024.05.15 06:14 Zckary Accepted my first job offer post-grad for 75k! Feels like a fake it til you make it?

Hello all,
I graduated last May with my Bachelors in Management Information Systems with a focus on Technology and Management. Post graduation I didn’t have anything lined up, so during the summer I worked as a bag boy at a local golf course, then eventually went back to a broker I interned for to work as an office assistant part time all while I continued to job search. Sent out hundreds of applications and got interviews here and there, but no luck getting hired. It was honestly such a draining experience. I couldn’t even get hired for a position paying 45-50k a year and a lot of them were customer service based roles, very entry level. Fast forward to now, I got hired to be an ‘engineer’ but the role is more so a project management role. Absolutely no experience in the field and they are willing to train me. One thing I learned about obtaining a job is it’s all about who you know and if the timing is right. The guy whos position I am taking over got promoted and I happen to know someone within the company which definitely helped. One in-person interview and three weeks later they sent me an offer, which definitely caught me off guard. Nervous to start to say the least, but definitely excited and motivated to get my professional career underway. Wish me luck!

2024.05.15 06:13 Focused_Meandering City Scholars Warning

For those not in the know, the UIUC City Scholars program is a co-op program that primarily offers juniors, seniors, (and some early-blooming sophomores) a "chance" to work as a part-time intern while taking online/traveling professor courses. I won't go into details on the companies who show up but they tend to either be fintech or are looking for full-stack developers which is pretty typical as internships go. Note that this problem is for CS or CompE only and they will straight up tell you to not apply if you aren't in either of those majors(CS+X is included).
Honestly, I don't think there should be any reason why you shouldn't apply, this post serves more as a warning for those who do apply to not treat it like some likely thing to bet on obtaining.
Yes they will accept 250+ applicants into the candidate process, yes they will have a total available position count of less than 30 (maximum 12% chance raw), no they won't reject more applicants from the first stage so that successful applicants will have a higher chance and rejected applicants can move on. The "but we don't know what the companies want" argument is irrelevant when many of the companies that buy into this program are recurring which establishes a pattern of expectation. Not to mention that none of these companies are black boxes. The recruiters likely do talk with the program organizers and program alumni are kept-in-touch with after their semester concludes. The "what if we reject the applicant that would've been a perfect fit" argument is also pretty weak considering the fact that no one applicant can visit every single booth at the city scholars career fair. The ratio of applicants to companies is simply too high making the lines simply too long and companies will not send interviews unless you convene with them.
I think a good analogy for their process is the hor devours buffet they have at the career fair with the hiring companies being diners with specific food intolerances like gluten-intolerance, lactose-intolerance, etc... 250+ students are offered up on a platter for the (paying) companies to pick through often making the lines to meet (minimum 4 in parallel) recruiters take 1/4 - 1/3 of the career fair time each. When any specific applicant arrives at the front, the recruiters already know that they are looking for someone who is significantly more qualified than the average CS or CompE student since these are pretty generalist SWE roles (and don't collide with a summer internship) thus leading to them telling most to walk away from the table even if you ask to sign up for an interview directly. Even though City Scholars presents itself as a sort of an "intro" internship bridging the gap between schoolwork and internship duties, the competition was so high this past semester that it seemed that only those with prior internships/professional experience received an offer to interview later (which is different from even last year talking to a city-scholars alumni I know). The only people that lose out here are most of the students who get accepted into candidacy but aren't leagues ahead of the average CS/CompE undergrad.
As a reminder, if you are considering applying for the next cycle, this isn't your warning to not do so. I still think that you'll at least gain some experience talking face-to-face with recruiters and some of your fellow cohort can be entertaining to talk to and network with while waiting in a 50-strong line. Instead, this is your warning to not get your hopes up for getting an internship over other regular applications you may submit.
Don't even get me started on how, by submitting a matching application before the results, you are effectively signing a contract that you must follow through and attend the internship if accepted, as renegging would not only blacklist you but also "tarnish the reputation of the program". This kind of contract will force you to inform any current organization (ex: disruption lab, ACM sig, research under a professor) you are working with that there is a chance you will not be here the next semester. If you don't actually get the position, you lowered that organization's trust in you for nothing.
This program is no Waterloo CS co-op program. You're no more guaranteed a position than a regular application.
Am I coping? Yes I'm coping, but other opportunities did present themselves though the time and consideration that I put into this program during the general application cycle did come out of the process of looking for a general internship.

So today I had a woman let’s name her Jane come to pick up her child’s medication. And I told her kindly at the time that it was going to be about 45 minutes since we were short staffed. The woman replies “ugh see this is why I hate this pharmacy. I requested the refill at 11:30 today why isn’t it ready?!” Which I kindly say, “maam I apologize but we are extremely short staffed and we are doing everything we can to help get everyone their meds. I’ll see you in 45 minutes.” To which this evil cake face responses “no I’ll see you in 30 minutes and it better be ready.” And she proceeds to gas it out of drive through. (We have two full time and two part time people there at the time and truck plus 4 shots waiting and my pharmacist was in an interview for another part timer) one of the full times started profusely vomiting so she leaves (side note the full time that left has called out of work every single week at least two days so she not expected back). So now there are three techs in the pharmacy two on customer service and one girl counting. Time passes and I think oh that woman isn’t back yet maybe she’s just gonna wait for the text. It had been like 20 minutes and she’s a known problem. Truly she thinks we only have her family’s prescriptions to fill. She then rolls of to drive through at maybe 30 minutes since the last time I’ve seen her and I tell her, “hey Mrs Jane I apologize but blah blah isn’t filled yet could you either come wait inside that way I can just check you out the moment it’s done or you can make a loop and hop back in line and I’ll have it ready and waiting when you get back.” She proceeds to shoot laser beams out her eyes at me and yell, “WHAT DO YOU MEAN I TOLD YOU ID BE BACK IN 20 MINUTES WHY THE ____ IS BLAH BLAH’S MEDICINE READY. GET IT READY RIGHT NOW!” “Maam, I understand it’s frustrating but you will not yell at me. If you will kindly come inside-“ “NO YOU WILL FILL THOSE PRESCRIPTIONS RIGHT THIS SECOND AND GIVE THEM TO ME. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SLAP A LABEL ON THEM” “Maam, I’m sorry but that’s not how this works. I have to print the label pull the drugs verify the drug is the correct dose and ndc then count it out then it’s got to have a photo for proof of the quantity I counted then it gets its vial. Then I scan everything then it gets a label slapped on it then it gets bagged. Then I hand it off to the pharmacist to make sure I am giving the correct drug,quantity to blah blah. So no I do not slap labels on anything. Now you can either move out of my drive through and come inside or you can make a loop.” At this point I’m shaking bc that’s how I get pissed one of my part time coworkers asks to take over and I told her no because the front pick up also has a line. “ what are you gonna do move my car. Fill my scripts for blah blah now. I hate this pharmacy yall are so lazy. Every time I’m here it’s always so busy and yall are so hateful to me and my family.” “Maam would you prefer I transfer you else where bc there are people behind you who need their drugs to and you sitting here prevents me from helping them or you. So you have your options. One was related to embedded in a good mnc but didn’t learn much there and the other was also on embedded where I had to code in C and understand all the linux commands and flash the image on to the device which was hard in the start . I always wanted to do something in core , so I never took any Cs minors and now I don’t have a placement . I am planning to go for masters next year but don’t have any skill set for doing masters in CS . After looking at the placement scenario , I really want a good job and I have realised that masters in Cs would help me with that . I don’t know what to do this year . Do I sit idle ? Coz the peer pressure is not helping me and I feel like I’m useless. Pls help me what to do this year. I also have a interview for bussinnes development intern this week which is completely non tech and I’m confused if I can perform in that role also coz I have 0 experience. Pls help me with what to do?
