Ruy Lopez Open Defence
Black is temporarily two pawns up, but there is a loose knight sitting on an open file leading straight to her king. Why not attack it with 7. Re1?
Most popular responses
- 7. Re1 (Ruy Lopez:Riga Variation) Black is in danger of seeing some large pieces fall off the board in the next few moves. In addition to the piece currently en prise, the f3-knight is threatening to take on d4 ganging up on the c6-knight and freeing the f-pawn to advance to f3 and win the house. 2023.04.01 11:03 VincentArcher April 2023 [Releases & Promotions]
This post is aimed to help users find new litrpg content on a month-to-month basis by constructing a list of new releases. This post will be updated based on multiple sources, including posting in this thread. This post is not meant to replace those submissions but to make it easier for users to find them.
The title should bring you to the relevant
Reddit posting (if any) for comments, while the link column should bring you to the relevant content.
- Top comments should only be promotion. Any discussion about it should be in the comments below the promotion. If you notice an error, send me a direct message rather than post.
- When linking to an outside store use a plain link, affiliate links will be removed.
- Cross-promotions for progression fantasy without any gamelit elements are not included.
- Promoted Webseries are included only once every five months. If your Webseries does not include a significant number of chapters or pages at the time of promotion, I might delay inclusion until it does.
If you missed all the content from
March, there were 64 ebook releases, 43 audiobooks, 23 promoted webseries, 4 novella-sized releases and 4 omnibus releases of series (including a joint omnibus/last book double release).
Note: Some entries for March may have been noticed too late since I'm way too tired these days, in which case they are included on top for this month's list.
Here's what the new month brings
you!

Ruy Lopez:Riga Variation
Both Nxc6 and f3 are now threatened, and even if Black can meet the first threat there seems to be nothing she can do about the second, unless she can distract White by going after something more valuable than a knight. The departure of the f3-knight, an important defender of the White kingside, along with the strong placement of Blacks own knight on e4, might be a clue...
The move is 8...Bd6, and the plan is for Black's bishop, knight and queen to have a chat with the White king.
Most popular responses
- 8...Bd6 (Ruy Lopez:Riga Variation) With her last move White created the dual threats Nxc6 (bxc6 Bxc6+ winning the exchange) and f3. Can either of these still be played? It turns out that 9. f3 allows perpetual check, as it removes the option of driving away a Black queen from h4 by playing g3. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (12091 games)

January, there were 64 ebook releases, 37 audiobooks, 18 promoted webseries, two novella-sized releases and 6 omnibus releases of series.
Note: Some entries for January may have been noticed too late since I'm way too lazy these days, in which case they are included on top for this month's list.

Observations
The top scene is getting younger and younger. I believe this is due to more opportunities and more democratic availability of knowledge (internet communities, more books, more software, more databases and analyses) and tools to improve. All this was likely available to fewer people in the past and particularly in some countries were chess was more appreciated. This could allow strong young players to close the gap with the senior ones and it means that the seniors have an harder time to keep their top rankings.
It is impressive to me that until the 90s people in their 50s or 60s were quite competitive. Such players are super strong also today (few players could beat, say, the ones that win the senior world championship or the likes of Gelfand, Anand, Ivanchuk and so on) but the gap with the younger players seems getting larger. Or maybe today there are other opportunities that senior players until the 90s couldn't take (see Kramnik and Deepmind research).

2021.08.02 03:09 abrownn [Effortpost] A Middle Eastern astroturf/bot army is being generated *right now*
Disclaimer: This isn't a high-effort post but it took a bit of legwork regardless to investigate/archive/etc. I spotted this earlier and threw it together in a hurry due to IRL obligations taking me away from my computer earlier, so I apologize for syntax and consistency issues. Here's
some of my previous writeups for those wanting to read additional similar content.
I periodically check the "new users" tab on reddit for shits and giggles, often spotting fun things to poke at and investigate a bit but it's primarily cryptomoonshot bots being born or porn spammers. Today was a bit different. There were Deepfakes, Deepfakes everywhere (a-la BuzzLightyear.meme). GAN Deepfakes are nothing new in astroturf ops and I've highlighted some of them in the past (I thought I published the writeup but apparently I didn't - that's a story for another day I guess). Despite the tech being several years old, the majority of the free resources to make them are still relatively low quality and the high quality ones are primarily relegated to the realm of the corporations helping to build tools to identify them in the first place (Nvidia, Google, Microsoft, etc.), so the overwhelming majority of those you'll see consistently have the same "flaws" which make them stick out like a sore thumb (or so you'd think); eye placement relative to the photo's center, hair artifacting, teeth artifacting, earring artifacting, background artifacting, "2nd face" artifacting (aka nightmare-fuel (see u/AdmirableEffective74 for an example)), and more. I say "or so you'd think" because I've shown these images to family friends before when my investigations have come up randomly and I've yet to meet someone who isn't an AI Engineer that's been able to identify a single one of these as "not human" - young, old, from all walks of life, not one. But I digress...
https://www.reddit.com/users/new - the last 250 pages covers just shy of 2 hours worth of account creations (250*50=~12500 accounts) which I skimmed at ~6pm UTC Aug 1st (~8ish hours ago at time of publishing). Over the span of those two hours I found *at least 46 Deepfake accounts, roughly half with fake names, the other half with autogenerated names. (plus another 32 on Aug 2nd)
Looking at the creation dates (use RES to sort by that column), you'll notice that the average delay between account creations is 30-45 seconds, often dropping to as low as 2-3 seconds in many cases. Note: creation dates are listed in Reddit's server's time-zone (-8UTC).
u/tinglilecomlodi stood out in particular with a profile description that roughly translates to" There will be no country in Yemen with security, stability, prosperity, unity, love and intimacy in the presence of partisanship, sectarianism, salism and regionalism, all of this ignorance and backwardness". u/Bazzi_Kutaiba's says "God, UAE, Mohammed bin Zayed". u/Fakhoury_Bahira's says "🇾🇪In the world will not be seen on my land as a guardian.. 🇾🇪, ani-y eggs". u/ArianBaysan's says "My heart beat will remain Yemeni❤". u/Kadar_Hanania's says "If it doesn't develop, it's definitely going to change...Thank you_Mohammed_Bin_Rashid #Thank you_Mohamed_Bin_Zayed"
On a lark, I googled one of the odd profile descriptions thinking it was perhaps a line from the Quran or a religious text: اللهم انت السند وانت المعتمد بك أستعين وأستجير واكتفي -> "Oh God, you are the bond and you are the one who is trusted in you. I seek help and seek protection and be satisfied" and the top hit was another GAN reddit account made the day prior:
Many of the accounts descriptions were apparently snippets of Arabic songs
u/arveshotasna https://archive.is/HpvTs -- I cant tell if it's related or not but it was born at the same time/has arabic in his desc/etc. Googling that lead to a few twitter accounts of stolen pics of white women retweeting nothing but content in support of Qataagainst Turkey/KSA - each has 2 or 3 followers with these two in common consistently: https://twitter.com/ahmadah81931764 https://archive.is/2SzxI - https://twitter.com/buthainaalans2 https://archive.is/Fky9K
ShalhoubNawal in particular had an interesting profile description: "Qatar University Alumni Association's law branch is interested in reviving the interaction between law school graduates, highlighting their achievements in society, and promoting and sharing experiences with those interested in legal affairs." This largely mirrors most of what I've seen on twitter and reddit; that the astroturfers all seem to be affiliated with various "schools" or programs like this. WiKassab in particular proclaims that they're a Qatari woman. One of the accounts they all follow, buthainaalans2, has an interesting profile description as well: "Activist and writer in economics, Department of Strategic Planning and Public Administration - UK Nottingham Trent University MBA, Qatar University, Honorary Ambassador of the Qatar Cancer Society." Another Student it seems.
A mystery for another day, or likely never as Twitter seems to only review reports by people with .edu in their emails and not citizen-researchers.
*Several accounts were banned during the process of archiving them but they too were generic Deepfake profiles that matched the others:
I'm noticing a username trend here...
I also found two accounts with profile descriptions of "QU 📚" -- QU is short of Qatar University (among other things) but the book stack emoji lends credence to that possibility. One's profile pic looks like a stock pic out of GQ, the other is of a young middle eastern man that also looks suspiciously "stock pic"-ish. Neither yielded results when reverse-searched but are not Deepfakes like the others.
Given that I was able to find that other account from yesterday that fit the same patterns and that I found so many in just a 2 hour span, my guess is this is an ongoing project of theirs -- whoever it is -- and that they could very well have made hundreds of accounts by this point, if not more. I think it's rather clear what the intent is but not who's behind it. I've seen several independent UAE/Qatari related astroturf groups pop up since mid-2020 but they typically seem to stick to their own relatively-unknown subs. Perhaps it's an SEO tool as their subscriber numbers are pitiful despite the amount of accounts they command, or perhaps they're gearing up for a new, more public influence campaign.
*edit for spelling
Ninja edit 8/2: It's ongoing as I thought. I went over the most recent 100 pages which encompasses ~5000 accounts and 59 minutes of creations to look for more and found 32 new accounts, I'll edit in more as I find them below:
(u/Illustrious-Type2982 is another dual-face Eldritch horror worth looking at)
u/cawhistworllitibi sticks out to me w/ a profile description of "Your personality is your brand, does not violate copyright #Masters_of_law_private #Dubai_Dari 🇦🇪 #legal_line"
8/4 edit, it's ongoing:
8/6 edit, still ongoing, no admin response from my email:
unknown affiliation but likely related: u/machiyairinuSalibaReal life pic?https://archive.is/wq4bk
Petagikatashia's profile description reads: "Loving my religion, my king and my country"
Machiyairinu's reads "Click to follow the Southern Resistance Forces"
8/9 update - more than a week since my email to the admins, zero *visible action taken, zero reply. Classic. To the Admins credit though, 99% of the accounts listed before today are now shadowbanned, likely automatically though.
8/20 update, still going and no reply from admins. 25 page name skim (~1250 accounts) covers 10 minutes - 11 new accounts spotted. 4 of the previously mentioned accounts above are still alive (RareChicken309, Latter-Excuse7547, RudeBodybuilder4955, TailorOnly) but none have any activity yet.
I believe the account creation is automated and at their current rate, (July 31 - Aug 20, 21 days*86400 seconds per day, 1 account created per 2 minutes high average thru 2-3 seconds low average, 45 seconds med average), I believe they have possibly created anywhere from 35,000 accounts (low ball, 1 acct/2 min) to 1.9m (high ball, 1 acct/2.5 sec) w/ a medium average rate amounting to possibly ~100,000 accounts (1 acct/45 sec).
9/24/21 edit: Still seeing them, still no admin response
u/gillprofcitcontlersm's profile description: "uae is the homeland of the impossible..... may god keep her"
u/pormumyrtbrilesin's profile: "a graduate of master's law and currently completing his doctoral thesis, one of my priorities is to defend my country and the right"
Those ^ were all created in a 30 minute span

- Top comments should only be promotion. Any discussion about it should be in the comments below. If you notice an error, send me a message rather than post.

- When linking to an outside store use a plain link, affiliate links will be removed
If you missed all the great content of from
February, there were 59 ebook releases despite the short month, a decent chunk of 30 audiobook releases, 9 great webseries, 4 novellas and short stories and 2 known omnibus releases of older series and audiobooks for you.
Note: Some entries for February might have been noticed too late (because I might have been horribly distracted), so they are included in this month.

Criminal Justice Policy and the Pandemic in New York, 5/26
The COVID-19 public health crisis has created a “natural experiment” in policing and criminal justice policy as cities and states struggle to deal with the pandemic in jails and prisons. This is a moment of opportunity in the long movement to end mass incarceration and secure equal justice, but also a moment of obvious threat to incarcerated people, their families and their communities. This event will bring together New York City Council Member and Chair of the Criminal Justice Committee, Keith Powers, Legal Action Center Vice President of Policy Advocacy, Tracie Gardner, and Senior Staff Attorney & Director of Policy at Brooklyn Defender Services, Scott Hechinger, to discuss the pandemic in New York and the future of criminal justice policy in the city and state.

Deep Future: Building Lateral Institutions, 5/28
In this conversation artist Jonas Staal, whose magazine contribution offers a rationale for artists’ role in creating new models for radical democracy, will speak with Laura Raicovich, Interim Director of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art. Staal’s reasoning underlies his New World Summit (2012-ongoing) and New World Academy (2013-16) projects, both of which are multi-year and multi-location events that allowed stateless/blacklisted groups to assemble publicly via an artwork-as-parliament. Out of this came long-term collaborations with the Rojava Revolution, in which Staal was invited to design one of their physical parliaments. The conversation will conclude with explorations of current projects, such as Training for the Future (2018-ongoing) and a legal campaign titled Collectivize Facebook (2020-ongoing). Rather than a return to normal, how might our current situation compel the creation of more inclusive institutions?

Clothing is fair game, but not your face. Most insults will be based on things you say in the virtual bar. Comics will also insult each other.

2020.01.02 10:16 taniapdx My 2019 listening list
This year I finally broke down and bought an Audible account to supplement my Libby, RBDigital, & Borrow Box accounts. No regrets there. I also finally listened to the Harry Potter books, which I'd avoided for more than a decade and ended up loving. Just waiting to listen to the last one next week when I get my next Audible credits. It was a good year for listening!
- The Lost Tudor Princess by Alison Weir, narrated by Maggie Mash
- Ready Player One by Earnest Cline, narrated by Wil Wheaton
- Artemis by Andy Weir, narrated by Rosario Dawson
- World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks, full cast recording
- The Lives of Others by Neel Mukherjee, performed by Raj Ghatak
- Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien, narrated by Angela Lin
- The Borgias by Christopher Hibbert, narrated by John Telfer
- Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch
- The Girls Guide to Being a Boss (without being a Bitch) by Caitlin Friedman and Kimberly Yorio, read by Jessica Almasy (didn't finish, what a pile of crap)
- Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, narrated by Scott Brick
- William Pitt The Younger by William Hague, narrated by Richard Burnip
- Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf, narrated by Mark Bramhall
- Pompei: The Life of A Roman Town by Mary Beard, read by Phyllida Nash
- Hamilton: The Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy McCarter, read by Mariska Hargitay
- A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, narrated by Joe Barrett
- The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy, narrated by Alan Rickman
- Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges, narrated by Gordon Griffin
- Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone by J. K. Rowling, narrated by Stephen Fry
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J. K. Rowling, narrated by Stephen Fry
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J. K. Rowling, narrated by Stephen Fry
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J. K. Rowling, narrated by Stephen Fry
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling, narrated by Stephen Fry
- Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince by J. K. Rowling, narrated by Stephen Fry
- The Silk Roads: A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan, narrated by Laurence Kennedy
By far my favourites were A Prayer for Owen Meany, Alexander Hamilton (though I really didn't enjoy the companion book on the musical, despite adoring the play), and Ready Player One. Artemis was great, though maybe not as strong as The Martian, the narration is fabulous. Our Souls at Night is short and very strong. Do Not Say We Have Nothing is an utterly heartbreaking and terrifying look at China's "cultural revolution". The Lives of Others is sometimes disgusting, and I say that as someone who is not easily shocked or disgusted, sometimes heartbreaking, and overall just bizarre. I really have no idea if I recommend it or not.
Happy New Year!

2019.12.21 22:14 pier4r On Kasparov domination as world champion 1990-2000 vs Carlsen nowadays. For Carlsen is harder.

Thus
22 new possible challengers under 30 for Carlsen that were able to take a place in the top20 between 2013 and almost 2020.
One can see that in Kasparov times, more younger player raise to the top20 compared than in Carlsen time. There are surely several interpretations of this phenomena. My take is the following.
The Soviet Union and East europe was the biggest "producer" of strong chess players, during and after the collapse of the political system in 1989-1991, chess was not a priority for the states nor for many players that focused on stabilize and secure their lifestyle. Many relocated (see Yusopov, Kamsky also Khalifman, Shirov and others), many reduced their activity and so on. When a state is politically unstable, one has other thoughts rather than chess. Relocating, especially in another country, is not a small thing. Find a location, find a job, learn the custom, integrate, learn the language and so on. It takes time and energy that one cannot dedicate to chess. The influx of ex Soviet players in the US in the 90s is also a great example of this. Let's also not forget the two Balkan wars in the 90s. Thus East/Southeast Europe was very unstable in that period.
Now to break through the elite (say: top25), as many players report, one has to be almost completely committed to chess, there is no space for other time intensive activities (looking at you, #1 FPL player). I read and heard this in many articles on the web and in podcast. Recent examples: Mark Dvoresky (Chess perpetual podcast) saying that to break through the elite one has to be willing to work very hard; Vladimir Akopian (Chessbase) saying the same thing; Shtembuliak (Chessbase) saying that going up from 2700 is a very hard thing; The story about Leko and Kramnik (Ep 101 Chess perpetual Podcast); plus all those players that were in the top 30/top25 but then they went (a bit) down as soon as they didn't work to stay up to date all the time.
Stability is crucial for hard work. Therefore the unstable times in the ex Soviet Union and East europe may have limited some players and thus may have limited the opposition to Kasparov. For example Kamsky.
In Carlsen times one can see that the top20 doesn't change much. Thus could well be that the players in the top20 were/are able to have stability to hold in the top20, without being quickly replaced by others. Practically making a very hard entry barrier.
This to say that Kasparov between 1990 and 2000 had it a bit "easier" than Carlsen. Because not everyone was getting their best at the time and he could clinch to the throne for a longer time. India and China (and other places, Iran for example) weren't yet training several strong players.
This not to say that Kasparov was a fad. Rather, that every year Carlsen is able to stay #1 (better, world champion) is in a harder setting than Kasparov. Making an example with video games, the players that dominate a game in his early adoption do not have the same challenge as those that dominate when the game is more popular. Concrete example: players dominating starcraft between 98 and 2002 had maybe an "easier" life than those dominating between 2006 and 2010 because in the later yearsstarcraft was much more popular and well known, thus there were more opponents harder to beat.

In FFVIII you can access the computer terminal in Quistis' class and read little tidbits from Garden students and this one particular section is bothering me because I can't figure out who it's referring to. Here's a screenshot of the specific part I'm talking about here;
page 1,
page 2. Clearly Almasy is Seifer and Z.D. is Zell Dincht, but I can't figure out who the other two are.
This is probably the most pointless question to ask, but the way J.I.'s bit is worded specifically makes me think that I'm supposed to figure out who it's referring to, but I can't.
Edit: Secondary question that someone may randomly have the answer to - in the original Japanese was Zell still obsessed with hot dogs or was it some different food? That feels like such a stereotypical Americanism that it feels like it may have been added by the localization team.

2017.10.16 13:04 Dinoken2 Character Contest Round 2, Week 1
Hey everyone! Welcome to week p of /FinalFantasy's favorite character contest! This is the first week of round 2! We're slowly but surely getting through this contest! This week the matches are:
- Noctis vs Golbez
- Freya vs Aranea
- Sephiroth vs Lulu
- Vincent vs Edgar
- Kefka vs Paine
- Setzer vs Seifer
- Cecil vs Cid (IV)
- Locke vs Selphie
Here is the link to this week’s poll! If you're a bit behind, feel free to check out the full bracket here or check out the smaller brackets here (This week we’re in the Bracket of King and Bracket of Madness). Here is the official results post from last week if you missed that as well!
Noctis vs Golbez
Noctis Lucis Caelum: Noctis is the main protagonist of FFXV. He is the Crown Prince and heir to the throne of Lucis, the kingdom to have control over the Crystal. Though his three companions are not royalty, Noctis usually acts as an equal to them. He has dealt with a lot of emotional turmoil as his mother died when he was young and his father had to cater to the demands of the kingdom, leaving Noctis feeling alone. Nevertheless, he is not bitter over it, accepting that sacrifices had to be made.Noctis's words and actions often stem from a fear of being unable to meet the expectations of those around him, but as a counterbalance he has a desire to please them.
Golbez: The main antagonist of FFIV, Golbez is a constant threat to the party in his quest to obtain the crystals. In addition to his own incredible magic power, Golbez has a variety of minions under his command, including the four vicious Archfiends. This villain isn’t all about raw power however, Golbez is also incredibly cunning. He manipulates Kain into betraying the party and successfully lures Cecil into a few traps. It is revealed towards the end of the game that Golbez was in fact innocent and had been manipulated and controlled by the evil Lunarian Zemus. Free of Zemus’ influence, Golbez joins forces with Fuyosa to kill Zemus. When Zemus revives as Zeromus and defeats Golbez and Fuyosa, Golbez aids Cecil (revealed to be Golbez’s brother), giving him a powerful crystal that allows him to fight Zeromus. Following the defeat of Zeromus, Golbez retires to the moon, believe he can never be forgiven for his actions under Zemus’ control. In The After Years, Golbez returns assisting Cecil, his son Ceodore, and the rest of the party in defeating the Creator.
Freya vs Aranea
Freya Crescent: A Dragon Knight of Burmecia, Freya is the dragoon of the party in FFIX. She meets up with Zidane in Lindblum before the Festival of the Hunt and permanently joins the party shortly after when they decide to visit Freya’s homeland of Burmecia. Freya’s drive is to find her long lost love, Sir Fratley, who set out on a quest some years prior and never returned. As a dragoon, Freya has access to the powerful jump ability and in Trance, her jump becomes even stronger, allowing her to stay in the air and attack from above without jumping back down. Freya does eventually reunite with Sir Fratley, only to discover that the reason he never returned was because he was stricken with amnesia. Despite the tragic reveal of Sir Fratley’s fate and the tragic destruction of her homeland Burmecia and its sister nation Cleyra, Freya never falters. She fights onward, looking towards a future where Burmecia and Cleyra are rebuilt and Fratley is recovered.
Aranea Highwind: An infamous dragoon mercenary, Aranea is contracted by the Niflheim Empire in FFXV. Free spirited and charming, she’s not afraid to speak her mind and does so frequently. She does not hide her disdain for the Empire’s more shady tactics, especially their use of daemons. By the time Noctis’ party has reached Tenebrae, she has abandoned the Empire entirely with the majority of her troops following her. She gives Noctis one final act of assistance and provides him with the means to get to the imperial capital Gralea. In Episode Prompto, she assists Prompto in coming to terms with his origin and destroying a magicek facility.
Sephiroth vs Lulu
Sephiroth: An ex-SOLDIER, Sephiroth was once the poster child for Shinra and the inspiration for all potential SOLDIERs. However, after an unfortunate series of events and revelations, Sephiroth fell from grace and became a terror to the world. After learning that his “mother” Jenova was a “Cetra,” Sephiroth burned the town of Nibelheim to the ground and vowed to avenge the Cetra race by destroying humanity. He was stopped by a young Cloud who threw him into the Lifestream. In the Lifestream, Sephiroth gathered his strength and possessed the remaining Jenova cells allowing them to act as his avatars in the world. Sephiroth commits some of the greatest acts of villainy in the series including the massacre of Shinra HQ and the famous death of Aerith. Cloud and company do eventually stop him, but not before he successfully summons the meteor to destroy the planet and absorbs enough of the Lifestream to transform into an angel like being.
Lulu: The black mage of the party in FFX, Lulu is a cynical realist and one of Yuna’s most faithful guardians. Like all black mages, Lulu excels at exploiting elemental weaknesses but remains a bit weaker in terms of physical strength. Her Overdrive allows her to spam a single spell, allowing for a great deal of damage if used properly. Although initially skeptical of Tidus and his story, she eventually comes to believe him. Over the course of Yuna’s pilgrimage Lulu comes to terms with her past, accepting her failure to protect Lady Ginnem, the first Summoner she was a Guardian for, and allows herself to move on from Chappu’s death. In X-2, it’s revealed that she has settled down with Wakka in Besaid and gives birth to their son, Vidina, during the course of the game.
Vincent vs Edgar
Vincent Valentine: A mysterious figure found in a coffin, Vincent is one of two optional party members in FFVII. In combat, Vincent utilizes handguns and his limit allows him to transform into horrific creatures. Vincent joins the party out of a desire for revenge against Hojo. Vincent’s desire for revenge comes from an argument about Hojo experimenting on Vincent’s ex lover and Hojo’s (at the time) current lover Lucrecia’s child. As the argument heated, Hojo shot Vincent and began experimenting on him, giving him the ability to transform into the monsters of his limits. Vincent slumbers to atone for his “sins” but joins Cloud for a chance to get back at Hojo. Following Sephiroth’s defeat, Vincent confronts his origins and battles a splinter cell of SOLDIER trying to summon the planet’s final Weapon, Omega.
Edgar Roni Figaro: King of Figaro, hopeless flirt, and brilliant inventor who joins the Returners (a resistance group against the Gestahlian army). Many of Edgar’s weapons (tools) used in combat can target multiple enemies, including his crossbow. His most devastating tool, Chainsaw, can cut down one enemy or many depending on the attack.
Kefka vs Paine
Kefka Palazzo: Starting as a small time general in the Gestahlian army, Kefka quickly rises through the rank as a powerful, and deadly, mage. His murderous and deceitful campaign includes brainwashing, poisoning and outright homicide, but his wicked desire for destruction and wanton cruelty makes him a. While at first glance he might be thought of as a simple jester, he amasses enough magical power to become a God. This, combined with his high level magic, makes him a demonic force to be reckoned with.
Paine: Terse, tough mostly quiet and harbouring a mysterious past, Paine joins the Gullwings as a the third, albeit sarcastic, member YRP (a group of sphere hunters). While not much is known about Paine, several clues throughout the storyline of Final Fantasy X-2 are given to help the player better understand her. Paine brandishes a sword as her default, but can also hold other weapons depending on her dress sphere change.
Setzer vs Seifer
Setzer Gabbiani: Setzer is Final Fantasy VI’s infamous playboy gambler and pilot. We first catch wind of him as he plots to abduct Maria, the female lead of The Impressario’s Opera, Maria and Draco. Later on, he joins our already expanding party, providing our characters with an airship, The Blackjack. Yet, later one we realise that Setzer devil-may-care attitude towards kidnapping stems from the loss of his friend, who crashed in an airship race. After brief depression, Setzer eventually overcomes his grief in the World of Ruin, and takes to the skies once again with gust. True to his nature, Setzer throws cards and dice in battle and his special ability Slot can have either healing or damaging outputs.
Seifer Almasy: Balamb’s head of the Disciplinary committee. He constantly bullies and torments Squall, who he considers to be his chief rival. Later in the game, Seifer is easily manipulated by the sorceress in order to fulfill his “romantic dream” of being the sorceress’ knight. Like Squall, he also wields a gunblade and is partial towards using fire magic in battle.
Cecil vs Cid (IV)
Cecil Harvey: From the beginning of the game, Cecil (the main protagonist of Final Fantasy IV) starts out a Dark Knight who does terrible things in the name of Baron. Later on, he sets out on a quest of redemption from his past sins. He finally achieves atonement of himself and his past sins, and becomes a Holy Paladin. In Dissidia he can switch between the two jobs at will. In his Dark Knight job, he wields a sword and can deal out damage through his “Darkness” ability, which saps his HP. In his Paladin job, he can use sword while using White Magic (with stronger psychical damage).
Cid Pollendina: Cid Pollendina is the first playable Cid in the Final Fantasy series. He has a boisterous personality and a high knowledge of mechanism and machines. Like all of the Cids, he is a engineer of sorts, and builds many of the party’s vehicles. But Cid also has a softer side, treating both Cecil and Rosa as his son and daughter respectively. When fighting, his unique skill includes “Analyse”, in which he can pinpoint the weakness of his opponents. His weapon of choice, true to his nature, is the wrench.
Locke vs Selphie
Locke Cole: Adventurer and thief treasure hunter, Locke the second playable character you meet. Throughout the game, Locke’s main impulse is to protect females. This is due to a tragic story in his past, in which he couldn’t protect his girlfriend Rachel. He joins the Returners through guilt and revenge against the Gestahlian army. As a thief treasure hunter, he can steal acquire items from his opponents, has high speed and evasion and can equip swords, boomerangs and daggers.
Selphie Tilmitt: Selphie is a cheerful and bubbly Garden student, who just happens to have a dark sense of humour. She’s also Garden Festival committee planner and is enthralled with trains. When up against an opponent, she wields huge nunchakus used to smack her enemies from a distance. Her unique skill, like Setzer and Cait Sith before her, is “Slot”. But here, Slot can be used to cast a random spell, usually in succession.

2017.05.22 18:42 Sandslice [Relic discussion] Master of Fate: Time to climb the Win Hill! FF8
Just relax. So this is going to be a calm before the storm event for many of y'all; a simple FF8 event with a main focus on Laguna and his interaction with the SeeDlings. Your eggs and orbs are safe this week, as we're not adding more abilities or characters.
Prepare for the Cid Mission against
Tri-Edge, who brings the storm with wind and lightning attacks, drinks your lightning bolts because they're delicious, and bounces between fire and ice weak states (both of which you must strike as target scores.) And prepare for the MO against the Succession of Witches - yes, the three waves of increasingly interesting Sorceresses who kitchen-sink you with all manner of fell magicks.
But enough about that. Mission start!

Footnotes.
- Squall's C2 changes number of hits, potency, and critical rate based on how many times C1 was used during the same instance of Burst Mode: see the chart below, and first-banner specifics for more information.
- Unlike most commands, Selphie's C2 is reflectable if the dispel somehow fails to remove the target's reflect status.
- Radiant Shield 100%, +25% for each iteration, then iteration +1. Iterations persist for 25s since the most recent casting.
D&J buildups | Hits | Potency/hit | Ability crit-rate |
0 | 4 | 54% | 0 |
1 | 5 | 89% | 5% |
2 | 6 | 105% | 10% |
3 | 7 | 125% | 25% |
So it's not as quiet as you think; there are some power relics here.
Why should I pull: While it doesn't have the sheer hype of other banners, this has several quality tools, and doesn't do the usual FF8 thing of going all-in on Mote Ifrit. No matter how you feel about 8, give it a look before you give it a pass.
