A Journey Through Dogs and Their Myriad Breeds
2024.05.16 23:37 Faithhal A Journey Through Dogs and Their Myriad Breeds
In the tapestry of the animal kingdom, dogs stand out as vibrant threads, each breed weaving its unique pattern into the fabric of our lives. From the majestic Siberian Husky to the spirited Jack Russell Terrier, the world of dogs is a kaleidoscope of diversity, showcasing an array of sizes, shapes, and temperaments.
At the heart of this diverse tapestry lies the bond between humans and dogs, a connection forged over thousands of years of companionship and cooperation. From ancient hunting partners to modern-day service animals, dogs have earned their place as loyal confidants and steadfast companions.
One of the most enchanting aspects of the canine world is the sheer variety of breeds that exist. From the noble and elegant Afghan Hound to the playful and mischievous Dachshund, each breed possesses its own distinctive charm and character. Whether you're drawn to the gentle giantism of the Saint Bernard or the spirited antics of the Border Collie, there's a breed to match every personality and lifestyle.
Beyond their physical appearance, each breed also brings a unique set of traits and abilities to the table. Breeds like the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever are renowned for their intelligence and trainability, making them popular choices for service work and therapy dog programs. On the other end of the spectrum, breeds like the Basenji and the Shiba Inu are celebrated for their independent spirit and cunning intellect, traits that harken back to their days as skilled hunters and trackers.
For more>> Dogs and breeds Of course, along with their myriad strengths, each breed also comes with its own set of challenges and considerations. From grooming requirements to exercise needs to potential health issues, responsible dog ownership entails thorough research and careful consideration of breed-specific factors.
In recent years, the concept of "designer breeds" has emerged, with breeders crossing different breeds to create hybrids with unique characteristics. While these designer dogs can be undeniably adorable, it's essential for prospective owners to approach these hybrids with caution, as their traits and temperaments may vary widely depending on the specific combination of breeds involved.
Ultimately, whether you're drawn to the regal majesty of the Great Dane or the quirky charm of the Bulldog, the world of dog breeds offers a treasure trove of options for dog lovers everywhere. Whatever breed you choose to welcome into your home, one thing is certain: the love and companionship of a dog are truly priceless, enriching our lives in ways both profound and immeasurable.

2024.05.16 23:09 VolkerBach Ox Tongue Pastry (c. 1550)
| https://www.culina-vetus.de/2024/05/16/ox-tongue-pastry/ A very spicy pastry, and the last such recipe in Philippine Welser’s collection. We are finally going to move on into fritters. https://preview.redd.it/lk6bytn3tu0d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=596f67ef6d2cf40f01cfe270bb0903d859b46690 89 To make an ox tongue pastry Take the tongue and boil it so it becomes nicely tender (fein marb). Then cut it thinly and make pieces of it. Stick each piece with 2 cloves. Spices: ginger, cloves, and nutmeg. Cut them very small and take salt and mix them together. Put it into the pastry crust and make it tall. Always lay one piece on another, and let there be spices inbetween. Take ox fat and chop it small and put it in. Let it bake for an hour. When it has baked for an hour, take half a semel loaf and toast it so it turns brown. Put this into red wine with sugar and ginger and nutmeg added. Let it boil up and try it to see if it is good. Pour it into this pastry and then let it bake fully. The tongue was a prized piece of meat and though we do not have many recipes, those we have are often elaborate and expensive. This one certainly is: Cooked tongue sliced, stuck with an enormous amount of cloves, then spiced, baked in a pastry, and finally covered in a rich, sweet sauce. I am not sure I would actually enjoy this, but I can see why it was popular. Philippine Welser (1527-1580), a member of the prominent and extremely wealthy Welser banking family of Augsburg, was a famous beauty of her day. Scandalously, she secretly married Archduke Ferdinand II of Habsburg in 1557 and followed him first to Bohemia, then to Tyrol. A number of manuscripts are associated with her, most famously a collection of medicinal recipes and one of mainly culinary ones. The recipe collection, addressed as her Kochbuch in German, was most likely produced around 1550 when she was a young woman in Augsburg. It may have been made at the request of her mother and was written by an experienced scribe. Some later additions, though, are in Philippine Welser’s own hand, suggesting she used it. The manuscript is currently held in the library of Ambras Castle near Innsbruck as PA 1473 and was edited by Gerold Hayer as Das Kochbuch der Philippine Welser (Innsbruck 1983). submitted by VolkerBach to CulinaryHistory [link] [comments] |

2024.05.16 22:42 Witty-Reindeer-9355 Need advice from seasoned sailors
So I’ve been in for almost a year (June is my year mark) and I’m stationed in Norfolk. My hometown is in liberty radius but it’s a decent drive regardless. I wanted some advice from some senior guys or guys who have been in for awhile. I feel guilty not being home, my mom is getting older she’s almost 60 and my German Shepard is back home and I miss him often. But the thing is my family has yet to come visit me it’s always me having to come home. I know they have their own lives just like me but I feel resentment from it that I’m the one who has to go to them every time, on the other hand I feel guilt if I don’t because my moms getting old I don’t want her to be abandoned. Does any seasoned guys have advice on navigating what I’m feeling I’m sure it’s normal for everyone in the military. Thank you

2024.05.16 22:31 G0dhelpthegirl Opinions on my dogs groom please
| I guess I’m just posting for reassurance… I’ve been getting my German shepherd/samoyed/husky mix groomed for years at a local PetSmart and have always had great experiences but I recently moved and thought I’d try something new since there’s no Petsmart’s nearby. I work for a dog rescue and the woman that owns the shop I chose to try out comes and grooms dogs at my work on occasion so I wanted to support her shop. I’ve attached before and after photos… and I guess I’m just really surprised at what I was given back. Is this a standard groom for this type of coat and I’ve just been oblivious because I’ve been going to PetSmart or did this lady seriously butcher this cut? It just seems really uneven and unnecessary that she cut so much off… submitted by G0dhelpthegirl to grooming [link] [comments] |

2024.05.16 22:19 HoeBreklowitz5000 Aroid mix organic and mineral
Since my fungus gnat problems just kept getting worse, I wanted to move my alocasias and other plants to a new medium. My first try using pure pon almost killed one of my plants, as I did try a semi hydro setup and probably provided too much water. Now I realised I have an orchid mix by hand (it consists only of pine bark and clay granules, German brand called Seramis), is it possible to mix my pon with this substrate and just water as I would water soil? It would then not be a 100% mineral mix, but provide good enough drainage and airation for my plants that were previously used to pure soil.
Thanks fellow plant loving peeps 😘

2024.05.16 21:40 Lower-Water-6379 My dogs are fighting, what to do
I have two rescues, one pit mix and the other German shepherd mix. They have gotten into 3 fights with each other recently the last one being the worst. The last one was very scary, my daughter and husband ending up in the ER trying to break them up. It happened so fast and they went about breaking the dogs up all the wrong ways. Both have fractures and multiple bites .
We have been able to let the dogs near each other because one is still very upset, he was injured the most.
These two dogs , one in particular is very reactive to other dogs.
My question is what to do next besides get rid of one ( I wanted that after seeing my family hurt but the victims are wanting different)
Has anyone else been through this

2024.05.16 19:53 CoffeeMilkLvr What dog would Bones Have?
I just watched the dog fighting episode and was SO SAD when they put Ripley down after Bones wanted to adopt him 😭 I’ve been thinking about what kind of dog she’d have cuz It seems like she has a soft spot for dogs.
I think she’d 100% adopt, she’d probably see pre-bred dogs as some unnecessary status symbol. In my opinion She’d probably a mutt mix or something like a Rottie/german shepherd. Something big imo, Booth would insist it’s too much for her but the dog is very sweet around her cuz she spoils it. Like Booth the dog is super protective of her.
What do you guys think? 😁

2024.05.16 19:47 Zhiffy7 Best kibble for sensitive stomach?
I know German Shepards are notorious for having sensitive stomachs, our 9 month girl has tried a couple different kibbles and has had issues with all of them.
She’s currently on purina pro plan beef with shredded pieces and she’s having really bad stomach problems. I’m thinking we might try the salmon line for sensitivities.
What food do you feed your dogs or might recommend someone else?

2024.05.16 18:57 v0ltage_w0lf Need some advice
I don’t know if this is the proper sub to post this on, I’m sorry if it isn’t. So I’m a first time dog owner, one of my friends gave me a 3 year old lab German shepherd mix. Hes very aggressive to people he doesn’t know, if I or my family is not there he will try to attack the unknown person, there have been no incidents yet, but how can I prevent an incident from occurring? I have a fenced in yard so it’s not like he could get out and attack someone. He’s not around any other dogs but he is around my 2 year old niece who he’s been good to so far. Im just kind of scared and I really need some advice. He’s over all a sweet dog but again, I’m scared something will happen, especially because the people across the street from me have untrained pit bulls who escape their yard often, there have been incidents of them killing stray cats and small dogs.

2024.05.16 17:07 rockstarrockstar When do I call CPS to report?
My mom and stepfather have 3 children at a rented home (ages 4, 11, and 12). I moved out after graduation just a few years ago. When I was living there, we had 2 female non-spayed cats (one was an outside cat) and it was tidy until the end of my senior year because I wasn’t doing chores anymore and was too busy with friends or high school stuff. My mom is an alcoholic and drinks pretty much every single night. Every time I’ve gone over to visit, the house is extremely gross. They have an non-neutered large dog (german shepherd, black lab mix) who they keep in a kennel or cage all day with the exception of 2-3 hours of time in the house and potty breaks in the morning before and after work. They also have another small dog who has free range and another 2 unfixed cats (kittens of one of the cats). The house isn’t just dirty. There are dirty dishes filling the sink and all over the majority of the kitchen counter. The counter and cupboards are full of boxed and microwaveable food (expired and new), including the fridge that’s full of food but it’s a mix of old and new because they don’t clean it out of organize. I went over to pick up my 11 year old sibling a couple of days ago and it was absolutely heartbreaking what they’re living in. The floors are caked in dirt, animal hair, animal pee, and probably animal feces. There is garbage and broken toys or items on the floor. The couch cushions were peed on or eaten by the dog so the couches are just down the bones. There’s are blankets that belong to the children’s beds on them that are covered in cat pee. The entire house smells like animals so strongly that I couldn’t stand 20 minutes in there without getting a headache. The kitchen table is full of garbage and random things, preventing them to eat there. They replaced the stove around early this year because it broke (they never told the rental company because they didn’t want them to come into the house) and it’s been sitting in the living room since then. There are 2 litter boxes for the cats, one being in the hallway and one being in my 12 year old siblings room with one cat who is seperated because he isn’t fixed. He pees everywhere in that room and ruins clothes, bedding, and furniture. There are 2 bathrooms, but the main one is not in use because the only usable things are the toilet and sink. The entire bathroom floor in that one is covered in laundry that is caked in dirt and animal feces and the only walkable area is a small pathway to the toilet. There is a hole in the ceiling above the shower that drips when it rains and it’s becomes a crack that is literally caving in. Instead of my parents calling someone for help, they just avoid it because they don’t want to clean to have someone come in and fix. The other bathroom (the smaller one) is the only one they use because my 12 year old sibling keeps it clean because it’s attached to their room. My parents bedroom is where the 4 year old sleeps (she is not potty trained and has been 4 since February, she wears underwear during the day but has recurrent accidents. She wears pull-ups at night). She sleeps with my parents and it’s been this way since she was born. The entire floor of the master bedroom is covered in clothes and you have to step over cardboard food boxes (honey buns, crème pies) when you walk in to get to the bed. My stepfather eats boxes of these and just throws the wrappers and boxes next to his side of the bed (closest to the door). My 11 year old siblings room is full of toys, their mattress is on the floor because their bed frame broke years ago and my parents said they couldn’t afford a new one. However, their newest purchase is a computer monitor and computer tower (costing over $800 together). They also own a playstation and new iPhones. Both of my parents work full time M-F 8-5, with the exception that my mom has Mondays off. During winter, my stepfather wasn’t working because he works a seasonal job and the house was still in this state. They don’t open the windows or curtains to air it out ever so the kids are just sitting in a dirty house that reeks of cat pee and animals. The only safe thing they have is running cold and hot water. They have food, but it’s mostly easy to make (microwaveable rice/boxed foods, packaged snacks, and canned foods). My 4 year old sibling will go to my stepfathers moms house during the day when they’re at work and enjoys it over there.
I know this was a lot of information but I seriously don’t know what’s considered abuse or neglect and I feel nervous about reporting if it’s not that big of a deal. I’ve tried confronting my mom, but she just blames it on mental illness or her POTS that she was diagnosed with this last year. Help me.

2024.05.16 16:49 SishenShunsui [Breeds] Please help us decide an appropriate breed.
Can you help our family choose a dog? [Breeds]
We are a family of 3 with a 2 year old boy. We are finally settled in our new home and we are ready to add a dog to our family.
Introduction 1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?
- We grew up with dogs but it will our first time as the primary care givers/ trainers.
2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a
reputable breeder?
- We would like to buy a puppy.
3) Describe your ideal dog.
- we would like a dog that is good around children and doesn’t bark like a husky. A medium sized dog that could run with me and wouldnt be too challenging to train and well behaved around other dogs.
4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?
- my wife is mostly interested in dogs that she considers beautiful such as the Samoyed(example for her idea of beauty in a dog). For myself I always loved Saint Bernards, a giant, calm and friendly dog. But it’s not very practical since my wife is quite small and feels intimidated by the size.
5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?
- to follow basic commands like stop, wait, leave it. And lie down and follow me while running. (Jogging around 5km)
6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?
Care Commitments 7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?
- I have a few hours per day spare.
8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?
- about 2 hours per day. We will go to dog parks occasionally as well as open land.
9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?
- up to 30 mins a day and willing to pay for bi-monthly grooming.
Personal Preferences 10) What size dog are you looking for?
- a medium sized dog maybe around 20 inches. The middle to high end of medium.
11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?
- less barking and slobber, a moderate amount of shedding would be ok. I don’t mind cleaning the floor every day but I don’t want to spend 5 minutes with a lint roller every time I leave the house.
12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?
Dog Personality and Behavior 13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?
- somewhere in the middle but definitely snuggly over cat like.
14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?
15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?
- friendly to cautious but not aggressive or afraid.
16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?
- no since we will come across a lot of dogs every day.
17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?
- just the common things like leash pulling.
Lifestyle 18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?
- very rarely completely alone, maybe once every 1-2 months we will go out for a day trip late morning to evening. Preferably the dog would be ok with it, but we can easily arrange a visitor or care if not.
19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?
- no preferences different to those mentioned already. My wife will occasionally feed/ walk the dog, but mostly it will be me with the ‘help’ of my son.
20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?
21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?
- yes all the time since I have a 2 year old.
22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?
23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?
- China, there are only bans on the really big dogs.
24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?
- peak summers usually around 35c but can reach 40c at times winter typically sits around 0c give or take a few degrees.
Additional Information and Questions 25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.
- No additional information.
26) Feel free to ask any questions below.
We really appreciate any guidance! Thank you for your time.
